That is correct, yes. It's generally just a show of 'oh yes hi I'm active still, look these people are getting pets', proof to the mods that yes, RE2 is doing work, as well as providing themselves a visual log and an accessible record of when and where pets were given out.
RE2 just pops a post down, edits the records and sends a PM off. No confirmation/claiming is needed.

Stare in the darkness
Are you scared? Are you free?
I can be fair or a monster
Tell me now, which one do you need?

I can feel teeth tear into me
Rip me to pieces, rock me to sleep
I can feel eyes staring at me
Getting uneasy, ready to feed
I can feel teeth

No, it's pretty clear. I guess I'm still in favor of keeping the tag system in place for the reasons I mentioned previously. It's always been my understanding that players choose to undertake a hunt; I don't see why that should be changed to just having wild pets drop whenever, particularly when someone wouldn't want one/it wouldn't make sense. And making a tag to exclude a thread from RE2's attention seems redundant.

Maybe it could be suggested to RE2 to make a weekly check for new threads? That way it's just a routine thing; get into the habit and it might be easier to remember. Or make a thread for people to post their hunts, so there's a constant record for RE2 to refer back to for active threads/they get an email subscription ping when someone posts a new one?

If user schedules are an issue, maybe the ideas could be combined: a random helper does the check and leaves, like, a quick n' easy reference list of active hunts for RE2 in a thread in the mod area.

I definitely want to make things easier for Random Event, since I love that aspect about Evelon. I would just - ironically, I guess - not like to find a Cherry Palmie in the middle of my roleplay about someone's dying parents, you know?

So RE2 does definitely post in threads that have failed? I was just assuming I hadn't found anything and was trudging along until I got my event tonight. I've had the 25+ posts since the end of November.

Also, it looks like Crow has two completed hunts that have no posts from RE2 in them. Does that mean she was missed? Should we assume if we don't hear from RE2 in a while that that's the case?

(This isn't meant to sound accusatory! I'm just not sure if I should say something if I feel like I might have been missed? From what Kreepy said, RE2 is discouraged by the lack of responses, but if they're missing some that might be part of the problem.)

I voted that I have another idea, and I dunno if it'll work, but it's possible!

Instead of having the word [HUNT] or something too long like [RE2 Welcome], what if we had some kind of symbol to indicate that we wanted RE2 in our thread, something people wouldn't normally put in the title of an RP? Could even be a little asterisk like we see in official topics, like "* insert title here" would mean RE2 can come in there, while "insert title here" means RE2 can't appear?

Or you could flip those; asterisk means don't appear, no asterisk means free to appear. Either way! And it doesn't have to be an asterisk, either, it could be anything that everyone agrees on officially.

Re: * Random Event Ideas

Postby ToxicShadow » 03/06/2016 1:29 PM

Strictly speaking as a user, I never really cared for how RE2 functioned. That is, I preferred the original RE, that I suppose many users these days aren't even familiar with. Originally, RE WAS entirely random. They could post in any thread, at any time, even if the user had only just made a few posts. (I still remember one user that had an open RP, but no one joined them, so RE did, by dropping a snicky on their character's head. How awesome is that? They gave that person something to respond to when no one else did.)

I very much dislike the tag system. Always have, always will. Random Event is supposed to be random. That's the whole point. So having the tag system never really helped embody that idea.

Additionally, specific hunt threads can feel painfully tedious.

So, yes, I am entirely in favor of any thread being eligible for a random event notification, as random events are intended to be. (You know, appearing at random.) Give me all the wild pets, please. <3

The posts made by RE2 in no way disrupt a roleplay. Users do not have to acknowledge the post in their thread, the characters do not have to interact with it. Users can entirely ignore it, and keep going on with their regularly scheduled programming. (Lol. Just keep roleplaying as you were, like the post isn't even there.) Because it is JUST a notification. Yes, it's written in roleplay format, so your not just getting ugly "Ooc: BLAH BLAH" or "((BLAH BLAH))" posts in the middle of the RP sections.

I wonder, however, if users would be more okay with it if RE2 just posted in OOC? That way, it's VERY clear that their posts have nothing to do with the roleplay at hand and don't have to be acknowledged?

Postby Jaykobell » 03/06/2016 4:23 PM

I feel like there are many points that could be used here to improve the system. That being said, I'm afraid RE is heading the same way Morrey is: where it's an old concept from the early days of Evelon that's just slowly dying. It's not as bad as Morrey's situation, mind you, but it feels like we've revamped it multiple times, and every time proved to be... very unfruitful. Same situation as Morrey.

I'm with Ander on the fact that it's a bit jarring to have RE drop in your heavy RP. Yeah, I get it, like Toxic said, technically you can just ignore the post like nothing happened... but for some of us, it's still jarring even then? Some of us on Evelon do format our RPs in the form of a long story/novel-ish, and having a random post interrupt the flow stands out. Can I and will I ignore it? Yes. But will it still bother me? Absolutely.

At the same time, it's aggravating because there are literally no wild pets. I wouldn't mind collecting the Hunter colors, but at this point, I see it as pointless. And with the hunt requirements being at 25 posts minimum to have a small chance to obtain a wild pet? Ander is right in saying having an RP of 50+ posts on the exact same topic is extremely difficult to do. I get it, you can RP with others, but then it's even worse, almost, in a way? Because one of you gets the pet for all those posts, and the other person... gets nothing. Unless that was changed and I don't remember. But how many posts can you make about Character searching for Pet?

I'd suggest changing the minimum for increments of 5. Meaning, every 5 posts, the odds of a member finding a wild pet increases. I don't know the odds at 25 posts, but at least with increments of 5, then your odds increase at 30, then 35... and won't increase again only after double your original efforts.

Breeding asks for 25 posts, and I can understand why. You do get babies at the end of it, and they're all custom-made, unlike the wild pets, which are pre-made. But then, I guess therein lies the demotivation? I'll RP 25 posts, and then I'm not even guaranteed to get something. And how many different RPs can I have about going to search for a pet? There's also that too. It's not like hunting for a pet is a very vast field of writing subjects.

That, and if RE has a quota, what's the harm in decreasing the requirements? If anything, it will give RE more options, and more RPs to reward.

If RE can become a bit more accessible, I'd think people would do hunts more. But 25 posts is a pretty big amount of posts and commitment to ask of a community that already has a hard time, sometimes, completing breedings, something that automatically rewards between 2-5 babies.

An alternative to interrupting RPs and opening doors to all, I have two ideas:

1. RE PMs the member(s) involved in the RP with the pre-typed post. The person is made aware directly (it's hard to miss a PM), and their RP isn't interrupted in any way. The problem with that is that, if RE doesn't keep track, the records of these PMs might get lost. So my other option...

2. Have a topic dedicated to RE announcing someone found a pet. This would also probably get rid of the pre-typed posts. A simple message, say, in the Minor Updates or somewhere else, where RE can announce X found a wild pet in their [Hunt Link Here]. An example image of the pet found could even be put there so everyone can see the cool pet(s) you can get when you hunt (because not everyone will post them around; and some just become inactive and don't show anything, in the end). The topic serves both as a way to prevent RPs from being interrupted, and as records for RE for the future, if anything happens.

Good points are being made! And while the old RE2 who was totally-not-me was cool, that job is a LOT of work and doesn't always pan out. Personalized replies, while super chill require reading RPs and finding a way to situate yourself into the plot. Sometimes it's easy *drops a snicky* other times... near impossible and potentially not even welcome! And it makes it toally impossible to actually distribute pets in any sort of quantity, and likely lead to RE2s downward spiral since people felt they'd never get a pet after that. Whoops!

So I do like this thing from Omni that zap quoted. I feel like that could work well enough (even if it totally kills all the work done for the current system such as pretyped posts and item images). It would allow more finds, in all threads, without interrupting peoples flow.

I also fully support making RE2 and pet drops a LITTLE more accessible. 25 posts is a lot. Maybe if the minimum was decresed, or eradicated, but most posts meant for rarer pets being more likely? Like the lost pets might be found in the same area as a snicky, but if your thread only has 5 posts you're prolly more likely to find a snicky than a lost pet, versus an active thread with 25+ posts? Just to keep the rare pets difficult to find still while still keeping RE2 actively spreading pets?

Just a quick little addition (I like where this all is going right now, the thread idea would get rid of what some people think of as, at least a little, inconvenient about RE right now): if people still wanted the continued use of the images, and I think they're great, actually, would there be any harm in RE2 adding the image to the post that triggered the winning roll? No extra post, no text, just the item added like a mod note at the bottom as a link to the award post or something? It's sort of negligible, but it would be reminiscent of forums where items for events were programmed into the forum itself as little pop-ups you had to click to collect- though in this case, you just get taken to the notification post instead of missing out on it by refreshing the page.

I'm gonna quickly step in here for RE2 while they're not around, since I've worked with them/had access to their notes via the mod area, but.. ah. I feel like I need to address some misconceptions since there's still some confusion over how RE2 works these days.

RE has changed considerably, news posts and the Help! thread (and see the recent replies they've done) are along a new system of simply cutting and pasting a very, very, very generic reply, into a couple of different threads. Well, it would become more apparent that they're cut and paste once we actually have more threads. But the idea is low impact responses. There's no more roleplaying to get the pet, no more sacrifices, and there's no more roleplaying with RE2 unless it's an event with that in mind. It's literally like... Neopets, I guess. You get a notification with a pre-written message at the top of your page. This is our forum adaptation of that.
RE has always posted in failed threads as well, this is not a new thing or a proposed thing.

So the idea is, we take out the tags ([HUNT]/[RE2]). All threads are free game. But no, RE2's workload would not increase, since it's proposed they usually work on a quota (x threads per month/fortnight/etc). They brought this up because... well. They log in, see no active threads, log off and well... forget. There's not enough activity, so why bother logging on? So they forget. That kinda thing. They wanted a way to break this cycle.

Just a quick clarification. When you say "failed" do you mean ones that didn't get the pet or ones that were ignored or never got acknowledged? I started a hunt when I joined the site, and I even posted in it a while ago. It was never acknowedged and never posted in, despite being tagged.

I think we should keep the tags; they give an idea of who is actively searching or desiring a wild pet. And I also agree with Omni that there doesn't seem to be many wild pets. I would go after a Lost Tali in a heartbeat if I knew where to start a hunt for one. But maybe some new colors and species would help bump that particular area up? And having 25+ posts for a chance at a pet does seem excessive. I've been planning a hunt but I just dont know where to start anymore; I dont know if we have new "lost pets" everywhere or specific places or just randomly. I would do a hunt for a specific pet, but I dont think I'd particularly enjoy getting a pet I couldnt use/wasnt looking for. In that regard, maybe a list of what pets are where?

Anyway, off topic there. But back to what the questions were; I think we should keep the tag system. It just seems easier to me.

I love adventurous tales like that. That uplifting feeling that comes from seeing unknown lands and the knowledge that you came across—nothing can replace it! It opens a path from which self-confidence, experience, and important friendships—from the sharing of life or death situations—are born! But hearing it just isn’t the same. I want to create my own magnificent story!

A great adventure!

I just want to say outright that I really love hunting. I find it relaxing. I have a character that I love that's just perfect for it. I gain ks, and a chance at a fancy space pet! I love the lost pets so much. I want so many!

I never really liked the old way RE worked. I understand that some people liked the spontaneity/randomness of it, but I strongly prefer structure. I like to know that tagging my thread and having at least 25 posts qualifies me for a chance at a wild pet. As long as I know what the parameters are, I guess I'm fine with ditching tags. I still prefer to have dedicated hunts, but I understand if people don't care for it as much as I do.

As per the RE2 thread.
4: When RE2 posts CAREFULLY read the post to find out if you obtained a wild pet! If you did there should be a PM from RE2 soon after the post with your pet inside.

So, yeah it's always been a thing. Your hunts aren't being ignored though, I used the word forgotten before, because it's definitely not intentional.

A Failed Hunt will deliver a reply such as:
"The sun was shining high in the sky. Birds wheeled about, calling to each other and keeping a keen eye out for any scraps or escapees from the fishing boats on the waters. Nearer to the shore, the waters were rife with people and pets out to enjoy the good weather and clear waters. The sound of children's laughter mingled with the call of beach-side vendors to form a pleasant cacophony. Everything made for an idyllic scene, though if one was looking for excitement, there was sadly very little to be found."

It's just.. I don't think anything has failed since 2013 whoops.

Back in the older days, there was no guarantee that RE would actually ever visit your thread. This was - as Moofius stated - due to the immense workload of trying to insert yourself into an already rolling roleplay. And then I publicly announced RE2 was on a hiatus back around 2013 while Kreepy coded me a roller.
I think you're talking about the Inessi Hunt, right? I can't find any others you've posted in 'recently', and a lot of your hunts never made it to 25 posts.

I would go after a Lost Tali in a heartbeat if I knew where to start a hunt for one. ...And having 25+ posts for a chance at a pet does seem excessive.

RE has been very much about user discovery and exploration. The idea was to release a bunch of pets with two very set in stone areas, and encourage user discussion on where they found it. And the Lost Tali has been found, so it's area is known. Of course, maybe what Omni's saying is true and it's becoming an antiquated part of the site, in both concept and execution.

But maybe some new colors and species would help bump that particular area up

What... did you mean by this though? Kreepy tells me there are 39 new Lost pets. If that's.. not enough, I dunno what is. x'D There's also a special thing that Silv made that's ready to go, I'm just not satisfied about how many Lost Pets have actually been found yet. I also have... 3-4 more concepts lined up just. Yeah. I'd prefer to see more activity before I tell Kreepy I want her to finalise them.

Okay! I do like these ideas haha, though I obviously don't want to favour one or the other because there's so many good and strong opinions about it either way.
What I did like was...

A. Having an 'opt out' tag, opposed to an opt in tag. So you say specifically when you don't want RE posting.

B. Editing the image into someone's post. Slightly less intrusive, I would think? Something like this.

Hunt Success - Fur Patch

There's a key word there that I can run through the search system, there's an item, there's a visual indicator if you're skimming quickly. On the other hand, I could add Hunt Failed to the bottom of a post too, so you know it's failed.

I do admit, 25 was the number selected due to the breeding room areas, and I am happy to lower it, but there'd definitely have to be a hit to the success rate as a result. Or I can push up the base success rate (ie the success rate at 25 posts) and increase how much your chances rise every 5 posts. I just... don't want to make it too easy either.
Again, yeah. It's a very grindy task, which I mean a couple of our members do enjoy but ever since the others been pushing for more accessibility, the standards for 'how much am I willing to grind for this thing' has definitely lowered. Getting Random Event pets, will always be something people actually have to work towards, however.

Though, actually I do like this suggestion actually, what was the general thought about that?
I also fully support making RE2 and pet drops a LITTLE more accessible. 25 posts is a lot. Maybe if the minimum was decresed, or eradicated, but most posts meant for rarer pets being more likely? Re: * Random Event Ideas

Postby Jaykobell » 03/06/2016 9:15 PM

What Moofius said is honestly what I was trying to say, if more defined (i.e. specifying on rarity compared to number of posts).

My point is just to make hunts actually... do-able? Again, members have a hard time completing breedings at times, despite a very, very lenient one-week posting interval per post, and a guaranteed result of 2-5 pets, depending on species bred.

Unfortunately, expecting members to do 25 posts as a base to earn a chance at finding something... is asking for a lot. I mean; it's asking for something very few people would be willing to do, or find time to do.

While we're on the topic; I'm also wondering if it matters what the hunt RP is about? Could I have two characters strolling through Idalani Falls and still label it [Hunt]? Might sound like a stupid question, but again, it goes back to the point that 'X is looking for Wild Pet!' doesn't offer very many different storylines to do. Like, can I have a completely unrelated story and still label it [Hunt] just to try and get a pet? I know it might sound like a really stupid question, but I'm honestly just wondering at this current moment, while we're talking about it.

As for rarities, I do agree. Let's start at an interval of 5 posts. Let's say 5 posts gives you... 20% chance of finding a Snicky, and a 5% chance of finding a Lost pet. The odds say you're a lot more likely (four times) to find a Snicky than a Lost pet. But is the likelihood still there? Yeah, at least there's some sort of luck. People managed to breed RARE Kuhnas with a ridiculously low percentage of 2%, so I don't see why a roller couldn't get them to luck out and get a Lost pet at 5 posts.

I think what Millie was trying to say was that... there aren't very many... I guess you could say, interesting wild pets to hunt for?

Palmies aren't very interesting or easy to use;
Wombears have a very, very old and unattractive lineart;
There's only one Moonling, although they are really cool (though unfortunately very hard to create because of the animation);
Hunters are cool and do have a few colors;
Mekkayenas are... alright, I think? But I don't recall there being many colors for them; also not sure what people think of them in general;
The Inessi isn't very popular, I don't think...
And finally, the Lost pets seem to be the newest trend.
... and the Mr. Wilsons, which I was a few points down this post until I remembered they're a thing. Goes to show they're not... a priority in my mind.

It's very lackluster, I think is what Millie (and me as well, really) is trying to say. I think there's still a thing where some pets, like the Moss Gruss (I think?) and the Polar Mekkayena can be found? Is that still a thing?

There was the Tragic Insonia for a while... did that ever come back? Can you still hunt for that?

Overall, there's just little variety. Little variety and pets that have a serious need for a revamp.

I think we're on the right track with the Lost pets, but I think we still need more to make this aspect of the forums a lot more interesting, and most notably, worthwhile and rewarding.

Maybe your suggestion of giving a small amount of KS for those who failed a roll could at least help with that, and the feeling of failure/worth of a hunt.

Is there a place where its listed what pets are found where, besides the main site? I also did not know there were 39 Lost pets. I just assumed there was only a few? I don't know if that's privy to everyone, or posted somewhere. Its hard to keep track of what is where for me when stuff like that is going on. As far as I, as a regular user knew, there was only a few Lost Pets. But I could be missing a post somewhere that tells us how many pets, or maybe what kind of lost pets are out there?

And yes, what Omni said. That's what I meant. The pet variety...well, I don't really think many people are interested in a Palmie, Wombears or Inessis. Mekkayenas could use some cool new colors, and so could Hunters. And the Akail is very underrated and could benefit from some new colorations as well. I'd like a lost pet, but the randomness of the species puts me off just a bit. I've always been more comfortable in lists and knowing what I am getting into, though, but that's just me.

And when I mentioned the hunt, I was thinking I had posted in this one:
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=2747#p45513
But apparently, I hadn't. I did take the character from that and use her again, building on the fact that she never...found anything and basically spent a ton of time in the shrine and gained her own abilities. But yeah; I was super discouraged after that one, and I did try a couple of other times, but none of them were ever posted in. So I assumed that was a thing that just happened to hunts for a long time. And I never really tried again. I'm still leery of trying, just because I still have an aversion to putting effort into something that will never come to fruition. But that's just my feelings on it. I might try again, maybe, to see what happens.

Re: * Random Event Ideas

I'll kinda sit on the 'rarity is tied in to post count' idea for just a minute, because I would love to hear more feedback on that and if it's something you all like, we can get that moving.

Just wanted to reply to some things!

Yeah, I fully intended for it to be like the breeding area. You can roleplay whatever you want, it doesn't have to be a 'hunting trip' or anything. Which is why I'm kinda like, well why don't we just open everything up?

I think what Millie was trying to say was that... there aren't very many... I guess you could say, interesting wild pets to hunt for?
...

Can you still hunt for that?

... Ah yeah. The 'small species' problem. It's kinda sad RE got stuck with a lot of the smaller pet species which it's kinda hard to combat because of how rarely we get new species, but hey I can definitely take this feedback into account and maybe get some more variants out there.
After the Lost pets, yeah there was... the special thing planned, and then maybe some variants of the more heavily edited pets? So they're not their own species or anything but they're still special? If people like that idea?
I mean I don't get a lot of suggestions at me in regards to pet prizes so this feedback is actually super helpful.

I must admit, there has been a delay on some things like the seasonal pets because of the failed contest I tried, since I need to actually type a lot of pre-written posts and I need some item art done. But I fully intend for seasonal pets (Polar Mekkayena & Others) to be reoccurring. I was supposed to get a Valentines Event off too but time just wasn't on my side, so one was given to the Quest Master instead. Definitely expect to see one next year though!
The "Season in Effect" thing in my signature is specifically for telling users when Seasonal Pets can be found as well!

As for Lost Pets, well no it wasn't a number made public until today. I mean, I have a percentage in my signature of all the discovered species, and it's actually not updated to include the second lot of Lost Pets that was made up. So there's a lot more than people realise. I eventually want all compatible pets to have a Lost variant so. As for a discovered list? Well people have been posting their pets here! But I can work on an official list if people prefer that too. I won't be adding pets on until they're found though, but I can say that all the pets were thoughtfully placed and some areas are definitely themed/geared towards certain pets.

... Ah I am genuinely sorry to hear that. That was a little before my time though and more when Baal was running RE. I was brought onto the team in 2010, and I took sole ownership of the account around 2012-2013. So I am genuinely trying to do my best to come up with ways to make this process more rewarding for the both of us.
