Tournament improvement suggestions

Postby Shieba » 07/22/2010 8:36 PM

So yeah. Tournament sign-ups are like breeding rooms right now - horribly frustrating for people living in different time zones (me. D8 So this is kinda an egoistical suggestion. Bear with me. I'm currently horribly frustrated because I trained a pet for the tournament, got up at 2am to sign up and it was still too late).

- Larger grids. 16 fighters instead of eight. With low-level tournaments, this should still get enough people to participate and people who don't live in Evelon's time zone have more of a chance of signing up.

- Raffle grids. You let everyone sign up who wants to sign up and then look how many people there are. If there are, for example, 12 people (not enough for a 16-grid), you draw eight names. So everyone has an equal chance to join.

- People who got a prize in the last tournament (mostly place 1-3, right?) can't participate in the next one. More of an extra-suggestion to add to one of the others.

- Moar tournaments. D8 I understand they probably take quite some work, but a fact is that they usually don't last more than 3-5 days. Can't we have monthly tournaments? DDDDD8

I know my dreams are made of you
Of you and only for you
Your ocean pulls me under
Your voice tears me asunder
Love me before the last petal falls

I'll be there to ease your pain
However cruel the mirrors of sin
Remember beauty is found within

To be honest, I don't think time zones have kept you out of doing tournaments. Out of the three seasonal tournaments you've been in two. You may not have won, but you at least made it in to them. I for one and sort of glad you did not make it in to this one, as it allows for other people to get a chance as well. The rule wasn't put in to effect this time, but I've been wanting to make it to where you may only enter every other tournament, no matter if you won or not. It's not fair if the same people keep entering them over and over, even if they haven't won.

I will also say that I was planning on doing a larger grid for the Fall tournament. You can ask Shrewd, as I was telling her about it the other day. It was going to be a surprise, but oh well. I'll go ahead and say it now. It's going to be split in to two different tournaments, which were going to be opened at different times during the day for people in different time zones. Each tournament would have a capacity of eight as usual, but they would both run at the same time per say. Then once the two 'winners' are decided those two will fight one another to see who gets first place and who gets second.

The other suggestions may be taken in to consideration, but not for the current one or for the one in Fall since I've had it planned out for a long time now.

Oh yeah, I was in the first two ones because of my illness in hospital, which kept me awake at night so I was kinda more into Evelon's time zone then. Haha. Guess illnesses can be good for some things. 8D

And that fall tournament sounds awesome. Great to know there will be something for people from different time zones. Yay! :D

Er, I just want to say, tournaments last more than 3-5 days. They last at least two weeks.

Would we even get 16 people in there? We're not that big a community.

I know it's disappointing, but I can't find out everyone's schedule. ._. We'd never be able to release anything. If we make it available for other time zones, the other time zones will also complain. It's a vicious cycle.

And what Draiz said.

They do? x3 They always seemed to end so soon to me...D8

I think for higher levels, 16 people would be impossible indeed. But level 5-15 are rather easy to get and I think that, when I look at the last tournaments, we'd get 16 people indeed.

And I know just changing time zones will only create more problems, Shrewdie. Hence why I suggested a raffle system for everyone, so you could maybe have a two-day sign-up period and then draw the fighters.

But I suppose we'll see how the autumn tournament goes.

I also like your suggestion of people being able to enter only every other tournament, Draiz. 8D

May I add into this conversation? Something to prevent stalemates. xD Like our current battle.

The thing is... While leaving it to the random draw helps, it can also stack people who are way too equal pitched together. But if we don't randomize, we're afraid people will call unfair. 'Oh well, Shrewd likes them better! D<' Or, 'Oh, we all know this person is always on Draiz's good side. 8|'. I'm not quite sure how we should do it.

Maybe have the members pick each other? 'Hey, User! I bet Pet and Pet1 can totally fight!'?

Though seriously, this is the first time it happens... Although before, pets who literally had no chance were put up against tough opponents. This has also happened... I died inside for Jess's Ilex? xD; I thought Elusive Foe would help, but it... didn't. x:

Beyond that.. yeah. I don't know how else to do it: randomize or manual distribution... which will bring people crying unfair with the latter.

But if you have any suggestions, feel free to propose them?

I've been playing a lot of Monster Rancher recently, so the first idea that came to mind was... Impose a turn limit on battles. If the battle reaches the limit and nobody's been KO'd, the pet with the greater percentage of its life total remaining is the winner. Not higher life, higher percentage--so if Alice has 16 Endurance and Bob have 7, but Alice's total Endurance is 40 and Bob's is just 10, Bob still wins.

I dunno, what y'all thank?

That's probably why it feels just like I'm falling for the first time!

I'm so green (it's really amazing).
I'm so clean (too bad I can't get all the dirt off of me)!

It's so strange
I can't believe I'm falling for the first time!

Hmmm. I think this would actually be really useful.

Though on the other hand, I think it might be tricky... I can't quite explain why, but I have a feeling we'll get problems from that, too. Like in your case, Freezy, I'd be pissed to lose a battle like yours from a turn limit. You've been hitting and using Traits, but Ray's Leer has missed literally every roll, and the only damage that really happened is from his Spiked Body. You were clearly more aggressive, but you'd still lose.

I don't know if I make sense, meh. :<

Also... I've been considering just re-starting the tournament. Either by putting it up again for registration at a later date, or just restart it with the same people, but a different, more heaved out grid... Maybe let people pick a different pet or something.

Another suggestion would be making it so that as long as you hit, you do scratch damage at least. Even if it's only 1 damage, even defensive traits cannot reduce the amount of damage done below 1.

My other suggestion involves re-writing the combat damage equation and letting a computer handle the calculations, but that involves learning some programming or relying on someone who does... XD Granted, calculations are pretty much the simplest programs to learn, and could easily done in, say, Java with something like BlueJ or Greenfoot. Or they could be made in a program like Game Maker to allow everyone (well, everyone with Windows, anyway) to download the battle calculator and use it. D:

I know how to calculate damage from Pokemon attacks. No, seriously. I was actually suprised with the whole 0-damage thing - all my games allow scratch damage. A handful give it a 50% block rate or what have you but they all have scratch damage.

Or maybe we should make Stone Blood and Carapace Shield restricted? When I really have nothing else to put, I put Stone Blood, personally...

Well... we do have a program for battles, which Ticky programmed a while back. And I can't do any coding at all... so don't ask me for any coding stuff. xD;

Another tournament style I wanted to do is... One in which you fight every pet in it. The one with the most wins is the winner. Which... is also from Monster Rancher. xD

We've also been thinking about changing the 3-day limit. It's actually... really long. Battle posts don't /need/ to be long, so 'technically', on paper, they shouldn't take more than half an hour to type.

You do have a calculator? Cool. 8D But there's still a couple things I might suggest. For example, for hit rates... Maybe you should roll a 100-sided die instead of a 10-sided one? So your Precision + 50% base becomes a true "hit percentage" instead of an approximation. Another option would be to simply make Stone Blood +3 defense instead of -3 damage always, since 3 damage is actually a lot as long as the battles are evenly matched. Or maybe make Stone Blood/Carapice "special" restricted--you can have one or the other, but not both. They'd be exclusive.

*Train of thought changes tracks* The problem with a day time limit, though, is the fact that we can't be on all the time and some people aren't on at the same time at all. So the battle would be really short, I think. I kinda prefer the time limit being posts as opposed to days, but I suppose in the end, it's all just a time limit, huh?

Heh. In ur monster ranch steelin ur ideaz :P

I don’t know about restarting the tournament. I would definitely be against that idea, simply because we’ve gotten this far. The current battle is dragging out for a really long time, but still… It's kind of a good learning tool, this tournament, in that it shows what to do and what not to do, and can show what should be changed or corrected, or implemented in the next tournament.

I do like the idea of traits like Stone blood and carapace shield being restricted though.
The time limit is good the way it is, I think. Mostly because of what Freezy said; we can’t all be on at the same time or get on everyday. It would be murder if, after a long, hard day at work or school, you had to come home and type a post when your brain is screaming for sleep.

I love adventurous tales like that. That uplifting feeling that comes from seeing unknown lands and the knowledge that you came across—nothing can replace it! It opens a path from which self-confidence, experience, and important friendships—from the sharing of life or death situations—are born! But hearing it just isn’t the same. I want to create my own magnificent story!

A great adventure!
