Some Random Ideas

Postby Kallile » 07/23/2015 9:45 PM

With all the thoughts trying to bring people back into the regular RP board, I had a few thoughts that I thought I would toss out there and see if any stick. So feel free to comment/whatever, but keep in mind these are very rough sort of "springboard" ideas and not entirely concrete.

--I remember when we did a lot more random new pet toss ups, when you had to post 'taking one!' and that was that. What if that idea was morphed into something like a swarm or a hunt? They would appear in a certain area of the forums for a certain amount of time, and x amount of posts would have to be made in order to obtain one. It might stand to make these pets a little rarer and more sought after and it would help draw people into the other areas of the forums. Want to help spark some RP friendships or possibly character plots? Maybe release two new colors at once and have the second one only be obtainable to those who choose to work in teams hunting/questing together for x amount of posts.

All event-meant threads would have to have some special marking (maybe a "***" at the beginning or something) to mark them as such to be properly counted.

--"But Kal, the mods are stretched too thin to read and count posts."
They are, I know. But what if, for each event, certain trustworthy members were appointed (those interested could sign up and the staff could select them from there?) as "Record Keepers" or something. For that week (or two or whatever the time length happened to be) they would be in charge of counting everyone's posts and keeping track of who was going it alone and who was working in groups. There could be either a designated mod to PPM or somewhere that they could post when a user had reached their post count and could be awarded the pet. At the end of the event, all names listed could be mass PM'ed the new pet codes they had earned.

This would get everyone working for a non-breedable, rejuvenate the board(s) it spanned over, and maybe even create some plots that would get at least a few players to stay and keep RPing there. Ks would be earned, but it would require activity towards something other than breeding.

--Along those same lines, maybe there could be species specific events. Maybe there's a Matches migration going on, or a great gathering of Slynx for a ceremonial hunt. These could be part of or in place of the new pet releases and encourage users in much the same way to utilize their non-breedable pets for a little character development and gain a new, special non-breedable for it.

--Revitalize the user-hosted event thread. That board had such potential, and I think that if it was explained a little better or had an example linked it would do much better.

There you go, my little two cents that I don't know will be successful...just tossing out some ideas in hopes they might turn into  building block of some sort.

I LOVE, love, love, LOVE that idea. So much. It's an awesome idea, and having teams of two or three (two I think would be better just so it keeps post orders even and fair) search for new pets would be wonderful! The counting posts and keeping track is a similar thing I have done in my events in the past, because it can be difficult to keep track of a whole bunch of different posts with different requirements (Did they do the 5 sentences, did they do the max number of posts, did they put effort etc). I enjoy user hosted events immensely, and I think this is all around a great idea, especially with the swarming and the release of two new pets. Perhaps you could see the pets beforehand, then users would be able to pick and choose which they could go after, but not both of them (Slynx appears in forum A, and Matches appears in forum B). Then it keeps them just a little more rare. I really, really like this idea.

I love adventurous tales like that. That uplifting feeling that comes from seeing unknown lands and the knowledge that you came across—nothing can replace it! It opens a path from which self-confidence, experience, and important friendships—from the sharing of life or death situations—are born! But hearing it just isn’t the same. I want to create my own magnificent story!

A great adventure!

I too love the idea. Especially with it bringing hopefully an uptick in user hosted events, which I do think would take a good deal of pressure off the mods. It gives a lot of potential for activity.

I have a suggestion to go along with your idea, that I think is worth mentioning here. It might also be very helpful if there was an official topic in the Roleplay Advertisements like a sticky topic (not sure if that's the term used for those here), where users could advertise their events. Why official? Because things tend to fall off the front page easily, and it makes sure they don't vanish and get forgotten. This way those events are always visible and noticed, and when the user is done with the event they could edit with a done message.I mean it could easily take pressure off the mods, since all they have to do is create the official thread, and the users would be the ones posting ideas. The main rule I could see being needed, is that you can't seek breedings or lifemates in it. Those would have to be left the way they are.

Bottles smashed, I raised my hand
How can you all even stand?
And why is there joy in this poison? Oh
Faking smiles and confidence
Driving miles to capture this excitement
I can't take anymore

You're never gonna get it
I'm a hazard to myself
I'll break it to you easy
This is hell, this is hell
You're looking and whispering
You think I'm someone else
This is hell, yes
I am in hell

Commenting in chunks here--I think we did something similar to this in the past with certain pets! I was not active during this time (I had a kind of hiatus thing between 2012 and 2014) but personally I'd love to do something like this again! I guess if Silverin ever has any pets finished/almost finished that she doesn't want to release during a holiday, it would be great for something like this. Or maybe just have the holiday event be a hunt? I'd be down for that. ovo

Another good idea! Perhaps even make one user responsible for one area for the entire event? They can even monitor their own posts, so it's not like they don't participate. But if it's just one area per person, that would make things fairly low-key as far as keeping up with everything and would keep things more fun and less stressful.

CUTE! CUUUTE! I looove the idea of like, actual in-context events omg. Like a migration or a festival or something like that. Such a cute idea omg.

I too am a firm believer in the user-hosted event thread. I have one in the works but it also rides on the back of the custom prizes being finished before I start anything--which is fine! But it does throw a wrench in things for my event; therefore it should be encouraged as well to make events that users themselves can handle on their own or as close to on their own as possible. Doesn't mean mods can't be asked for help; if we move things away from making litters, they might have more time to help out a little with the events!

But there will come a time
You'll see, with no more tears
And love will not break your heart
But dismiss your fears
Get over your hill and see
What you find there
With grace in your heart
And flowers in your hair

"Tomorrow will be a good day."
