Holding Out For A Hero {P-Cita and I}

The voice of Quil was still so close behind her that Kahewai swore he was breathing down her neck.

The Fairy Paragon raced through the forest without casting an eye over her shoulder. He was still hunting her down, she could feel it. The madman with the lust for expanding his own lineage…he was terrifying and connected with even more terrifying people to help him on his quest. And ever since he had made Deadpool the agreement to leave his daughter Azazel alone…Kahewai had become his main focus.

Her sister Hani was so rarely around and her brother Atl….oh that horrid little beast! He applauded Quil and his quest, had told him where to find Kahewai that night. Now here she was, unaware that she had tripped into the Whisper Forest in her frantic flight to keep herself safe.

Sunset wings could not help her here—the jagged branches made the young female hold them as flush to her body as possible to keep them from ripping. For the first time she cursed her bright golden yellow scales for making her stick out so starkly even in the foggy mists of night. Shallow cuts marred her gorgeous scales as she pushed herself past fallen trees and through bramble thickets to make her escape route more difficult to follow.

She desperately wished to call out—to cry for help and find sanctuary…but it would do no good. No one knew where she was and those who did had no interest in helping her. She was utterly lost and alone with a brutish male somewhere on her tail.

The first cave she spotted became her refuge; at least within its dark depth out of the reaches of moonlight she might be able to blend in and keep herself from sight. Only then did she fully come to terms with where she was—this was not  Roraldi, she had taken a wrong turn in her panic and ended up in a forest as terrifying as her pursuer. This…this was somewhere far worse.  Quivering as the sting from her wounds began to come to the surface, Kahewai felt hot tears slide down her scales.

What had she done to deserve this?

Having gone out exploring for the day it seemed that Orthos was just in the right place at the right time. At least for Kahewai, that was.

Hearing someone tearing through the forest very near him, the Sailfin with the glowing crest carefully weaved through the trees, standing on his hind legs stretched out to see what was going on. Slowly he moved himself into her path, watching the young female carefully. She was running from something - that was terror on her face, not the joy of being here in this ancient place.

"Lo there, young one. What bothers you?" He called out, making a few moments closer. She was beautiful - was it a suitor who made her so terrified? Orthos felt he should know this female, as if they met before... But at the same time, he was certain that they had not.

The sound of another voice made Kahewai  jump—the Sailfin before her having blended so seamlessly with the forest around them. For a moment the darkness of his scales and the vision of the extended frill on top of his head made her shy away from him. But the sound of his voice…it had a ring to it that she could not place. It was strong and familiar, even though she had never heard it before. She felt some tension in her muscles relax and exhaled deeply.

“Oh, forgive me. You startled me…” She began, looking over her shoulder to make sure there was not a shadowy figure there waiting to pounce on her. When she found there was none she relaxed further…surely Quil would not be so bold as to attack her in front of another male. He held them in too high esteem to simply swipe her away. But for all she knew, this male could be working for him as well. “It…it is a long story that I’m sure you don’t care to hear. Just…problems with a housemate.”

Oh how she hated to even grant him that title. He barely deserved to be allowed to stay there; not after what he had done to Azazel and tried to do to Anoet before she was swept away into her mother’s care. She shivered, raising a lightly bleeding foot to take the pressure off of it as it began to throb painfully. “I think I might have lost him now at any rate…but I’ve also lost myself in the process.”

Orthos was happy to see the female relaxing. He didn't approach much farther - just enough so that voices didn't have to be raised to speak to one another. "Of course you are forgiven. I didn't mean to startle, I just wished to make sure that you were alright m'lady."

A slight frown came over his muzzle. Problems at home? With the way she was acting, he could only guess that it was with another male. No one should have to fear those they lived with. "Of course I care. Why should I not? If you are in trouble, then it is in my power to help." A smile now, as he gave a short bow.

"My name is Orthos. I would be glad to accompany you out of this place, but only if you feel up to it." Slowly he approached again to give her leg a good look. "Sage would know how to fix you up, m'lady, if you'd allow him. He's a Healer, and the best I've ever seen."

Kahewai rose back onto her feet, still paling in comparison to the Sailfin male’s stature. ”Oh, but I do. You didn’t do anything, it was all just in my own imagination.” She began shyly now, looking at her wings for any signs of damage as an excuse not to meet his gaze for just a moment. She hadn’t felt this safe since Zabimaru had left the house…

”Orthos…a very strong name. I am Kahewai; certainly not as strong.” She said with a small chuckle as she turned her pink eyes back onto him. Even though she knew very well where he stood, it was still so hard to make him out. All except for the brief glimmers of emerald that the fleeting moonlight caught every so often. ”I would love an escort out of this place…oh, but I don’t want to ruin your evening. You shouldn’t forgo your journey on my account…just a claw in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.”

She looked herself over once more at the mention of a healer. The scratches and scraps were not so bad, though the deeper ones on her leg were beginning to throb with more intent. ”A healer , we do have one of those in our household as well. If you don’t wish to end your night I will find my way back to her. What…does bring you out here in such darkness, if you do not mind my asking?”

"Oh, but it doesn't have to be as strong. Far, far more beautiful." Orthos smiled softly as he watched her inspect her wings. A small tear here or there, nothing to be truly worried about. That scrape on her leg however... That might need attention. "It is good to meet you Kahewai."

A gentle chuckle as he tilted his head, the glowing marks on his sail more visible. "I was merely here for a night walk, M'lady. I travel, and I enjoy meeting new faces. So no worries, I will be glad to accompany you out of this place. It is so easy to get lost, but I know my way around here now."

A soft smile as he shook his head, coming closer for a few moments and stretching for a moment. "Let us go. I'll take you to our healer, and he'll get you right fixed up."

At the mention of the word “beautiful” Kahewai’s cheery yellow scales took on a decidedly more pinkish hue. ”Oh…well thank you. That is far too kind of you.” She answered sheepishly, now holding up her leg not only from the throbbing but out of slight embarrassment. ”Well, it is lovely to meet you too Orthos.”

She gave a quick glance over her shoulder to make sure those murderous red eyes were not trailing her before looking back to give Orthos a weary smile as she moved to follow him. ”Becoming lost in forests seems to be a little too common for me. When I was first trying to find my Lady, I was lost in Roraldi. Although then, I did have company with me.” She said aimlessly, trying to think of ways to fill their travel back to keep him from becoming bored with her. Oh, why had she told him she often got lost? Now he probably thought her a fool.

”Do you often travel alone? I would think it would get tiresome…with no one to speak with until you happened upon a stranger.”

The lady blushed! Orthos smiled softly to himself, glad he still had his charm. Kahewai seemed like she truly needed his protecting and he was more than willing to do so. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Kahewai. It has been quite a long time since I had some company on my nightly strolls."

Chuckling softly Orthos started their trek, making sure that his brightly hued companion followed along. "It is so easy to get lost among the trees, in your own thoughts. I don't blame you for getting lost, m'lady." He smiled softly to her. He neve meant anything by the chuckle - merely reminiscing. It wasn't foolish to be lost, just as long as you could find your way once more.

"Oh, but strangers have the best stories, Kahewai! On occation I will find someone to travel with, but I prefer to meet new faces."

Keeping the pleasant look on her face, Kahewai followed closely beside Orthos where the tree trunks would allow it. She didn’t want to lag too far behind…it would only allow room for wicked claws to grab and steal her away into the darkness. She repressed a shiver at the thought of it. “I couldn’t bear to be alone on such travels…I look fair too feminie for my own good sometimes. Not exactly a frightening or imposing figure…than makes solo travel difficult when you are not sure who you might meet.”

She smiled up at him, more brightly than before. “Though sometimes I do get lucky with such meetings. Though, I am afraid I don’t have too terribly many interesting stories to tell. I have lived a rather ordinary life for one of my clan.” She said thoughtfully, then thought that perhaps he was not a paragon than happened to come from a clan.

“Do you have family, Orthos?” She asked softly. Perhaps it was a bit prying…but she had brought up the idea of them with mentioning coming from a clan. The general idea was not too far fetched to transition into speaking of families.

A slight nod on Orthos' part - he was making sure to take paths where they could easily stay close to one another. If Kahewai was running from someone then it was best, to be as close as possible. "Many find females to be 'weaker' or dainty... I know a few that are far, far from it. But you Kahewai, you are no seasoned fighter." He smiled softly in her direction. "Which is why I am glad to accompany you."

For a few moments Orthos went silent. Pensive, but not hurt by the question. "A family? Not truly, no. I was abandoned in my egg, and Citanul found it. He hatched me, showed me how to survive. Flying was hard to grasp, but the Battlehearts helped so show me that. Do you come from a big family, Kahewai?"

Again a pinkish hue found itself on her otherwise sunshine yellow scales. “Oh no, I don’t fancy myself a fighter in the least. I don’t much agree with fighting.” She said, feeling once again very sheepish. Was she really that outwardly awkward? Oh she hoped not, she hoped it was just the fact that she looked tired and lost. Not that it made the entire situation any better, but it would at least give her some peace of mind to think of it that way.

“I am so sorry, I cannot think of anyone who would abandon an egg. But you have turned out to be a han—charming gentleman, so perhaps it is not all bad how things turned out for you.” She paused, wondering if hearing of her own family would hurt his feelings knowing that.

“I do come from a larger family—the clans act as one large family, though by blood I only have two siblings. My sister Hani and my brother Atl. We came here by accident as part of our rite of passage and have stayed ever since. And I….have two daughters of my own. One I lost touch with a while ago, but my younger Lucrecia is still around.” It made her feel slightly awkward to tell this stranger of her children, but he had asked, and children were about as close of family as you could get.

It didn't seem like the talk of family bothered the large Sailfin. He just continued to weave them in and out of the misty forest with ease. One had to wonder how often he came here to know his way - innately, for surely his sight couldn't pick out the trees like this, nor the stars above them. The canopy shielded them from sight for the most part.

"I might have siblings somewhere, most clutches have more than one egg. But it's good of you that you got lost together." He smiled lightly. "At least you had someone with you on your journey."

A gentle chuckle as he tore through a few vines for Kahewai, not wanting her to have to stress herself. "Ah, I've always wanted children. I look after the few that roam through our pen and it is always joyful to have them around. Any idea where your eldest is? Maybe I could help you reconnect with her. I've travelled all over Evelon."

Kahewai smiled gently as she limped quietly along behind the larger Sailfin. He did seem to know this supposedly cursed forest much better than one should, but Kahewai was hardly about to question why he had such knowledge of this place. He was bringing her out…or into a trap. But either way he was willing to lead her and she had to trust him. It would be better than trusting Quil at least.

“I’m sure you have siblings out there somewhere.  My siblings and I lost one another for a short while, but we reunited eventually. I am actually surprised that Atl isn’t out here searching for me…” But she knew the answer—he supported Quil. He always supported powerful seeming figures—and Quil’s control built up a guise of power. He wished his sister into the dark Sailfin’s clutches.

With a small shiver she tried to refocus on Orthos. “Well, I am sure you could find willing ladies…you are certainly a kind enough heart to win them over.” Her smile faltered for a moment. Did she really want to think of him spending nights with different ladies? Not that it should bother her…goodness she had only just met him! But there was a pull to him so strong and familiar…like finding a lost piece of yourself that you thought you had forgotten long ago.

“No, I’m afraid I don’t know where she’s gone. Her father and I had named her Trance…but since she has taken many different names. I don’t know where to begin searching…and that is alright. She is an adult now—she would seek me out if she wanted to reconnect. I don’t want to intrude on her life.”
"I have been hidden, scorned, adored, worshiped, forsaken, coveted and banished more times than I care to count. But the one thing all those experiences cannot steal from me is the gentle soul I was born with, the kind heart I have molded, and the bright ideals for the future that have lit my way through the darkness of the past."

"But you knew eachother." He pointed out, with a soft smile. "Though, I'm pretty sure I could find my family... We couldn't look too different, right?" A gentle chuckle. "My coloring is pretty distinctive. And sailfins aren't the most common Paragon." It was wishful thinking, truly. "Maybe he thinks that you can take care on your own, or hasn't realized that you are gone yet."

Another soft laugh, coming fully from his throat. "Ah, plenty of willing. But I want to be with my mate for the rest of my life, raise our children, and their children together. It's an old idea, I think... But I rather like it. If I don't find someone like that though, maybe I'll just adopt. There's plenty of babies who need a papa, aren't there?" He smiled softly to Kahewai - the thought of being with her was tempting, but how could she feel about his old-fashioned idea?

"I could at least find out. Make sure that she's okay, to see how she's doing in life. No interference, just a check. It would give you peace of mind, wouldn't it?"

“It is our belief that blood knows its own…or at least it’s an old saying the elders of our clan would say before sending we young ones off on our rite of passage.” She still remembered the day vividly—Hani had leapt off that ceremonial cliff with such gusto, Atl had followed right after and she watched both of her siblings soar hundreds of feet beneath her before Kahewai herself had been gently nudged to follow them. Her wings, while a great tribute to her beauty, were also her biggest fear. So frail and easy broken…much like her. How she hadn’t wanted to leave her family behind.

“It’s to inspire us in the end; to make sure we know that when we return adults in our community the bloodlines that spawned us will always remember us. And we, each other, should we get lost. And maybe it is just an old saying…but all old sayings have some grounding in truth, don’t they?”

At his ideals of a family most discounted in the current day Kahewai had to be a little taken aback.  “Well, that has been my desire for years, so maybe it’s not that old or uncommon.” She paused and quickly lost her smile. Oh, what a fool she must sound like saying that after having just told him of her children.

“I’m afraid I haven’t been very good at finding it though. My daughters were an accident…a happy accident please don’t misunderstand me…but I’ve always wanted to know there was another I could rely on and lean on when I needed them. And that they could have the same in me. It just turns out…their father wasn’t interested in that.” Her smile flickered for a moment back across her lips.

“I would like to know she is well and happy, yes. But Orthos…I have nothing to offer…for any of this kindness tonight. And please do not tell me you do it selflessly or for my company or smile; you have done far more for me tonight than I can properly express. There must be something I can do in return.”
