Experiment Gone Wrong [Self]

Fredrick - Mary - Shelly

This was definitely not an intended use of camp property.

Camp Wanaflowti was already a camp for psychics, which in and of itself lent to it having some pretty unusual camp gear. More than just the usual recurve bows with suction-cup arrows, well-patched canoes, and hot glue guns for crafting projects, there were helmets and armbands designed to stop students from using their powers, machines made to channel psychic energy, and mats to catch falling levitators, among others. But in the dead of the night, three young Kuhnas had scampered from their beds in Oak Cabin and, ah, "comandeered" several pieces of equipment the campers were probably not supposed to have their hands on. Floating in the wake of the Nightwalker Kuhna, they had assembled themselves into a towering machine of confounding proportions, a caddy-wompus tower of wires, lights, and contraptions that to an outsider seemed as if it had no unified purpose. But Mary, the Nightwalker, talked and cooed to it as if it were a small child, and somehow all its whirring aligned and its lights blinked in sync.

"Yes... yesss!" the Candycorn Kuhna hissed. "Once the device is assembled, I will be ready to begin my transformation!"

"Geez," the Haunted Kuhna next to him said. "Are you having way too much fun with this, or what?"

"...Aww, be quiet, Shelly," he pouted.

I'm so cool (too bad I'm a loser).
I'm so smart (too bad I can't get anything figured out)!
I'm so brave (too bad I'm a baby).

That's probably why it feels just like I'm falling for the first time!

I'm so clean (too bad I can't get all the dirt off of me)!

It's so strange
I can't believe I'm falling for the first time!

"Besides," Fredrick said, "I have every reason to be excited! We're not just illicitly borrowing camp property and probably getting ourselves in trouble. We're going to be PIONEERS! I'm going to be the first pet in all of Evelon to enact a form transition through sheer power of the mind! Err, with the assistance of you two lovely ladies, of course."

"Yes. Our psyching powers are totally different from all that dumb 'magic' stuff plebians use," Shelly chuckled. "And I can't imagine two Kuhnas better suited for this than a technopath and a cryopath."

"Shut uuuup," Fredrick groaned. "Psychic powers are TOTALLY different. The machinations are nowhere near the same. Besides, you guys wanna do this to help me, right?"

"Totally on board with ya," Mary shouted from where she was fiddling with the machine.

Fredrick ducked his head, looking abashed. "Um... but I can still monologue to you guys about what we're doing, right?"

"Oooh! I've been waiting for the monologue," Shelly squealed. "Do go on."

Fredrick smiled, a big, toothy smile that crossed his whole catlike face. "Well then! For years now, pets all over Evelon have been assuming other forms through the powers of magic! Why, our own very good friends, Armin and Ofelia, have been using magic to change between human and Lucain forms. But tonight, my friends, we--I--will be the first to change forms through sheer willpower alone! Using this machine to amplify psychic waves, I will convert your willpower into a form change! I will become..."

He paused for effect.

"...a LUCAIN!"

"Dun dun DUN!" Mary added. She hissed and added a few fake thunder crashes.

"And then Ofelia will totally like you, right?" Shelly chuckled.

"Shut uuuuuup!" Fredrick hissed. "I just wanna know what it's like. After all, not many Kuhnas choose to become Lucain. Or vice versa."

"It is a pretty rare transformation," Mary agreed. "Obviously, humans are the most popular secondary form for most nonhuman species as their hands are an incredibly useful adaptation. Lucain are popular secondary form, but among Kuhnas, nope. I guess the whole cats vs. dogs thing holds true there, too."

"I just hope we're not barking up the wrong tree," Shelly chuckled to herself. Then she called, "How's it looking, Mary?"

"I think we're done here," she chirped back.

"Alright," Fredrick said. "You two wanna get yourselves hooked up?"

Both Kuhna girls nodded.

Parts of the machine crackled with a bluish glow. Massive hands appeared to be pulling two things down from the machine. Two colanders, long, colorful lines of wires snaking out of their backs, floated down from the sides of the appropriated automation and landed daintily on Mary and Shelly's heads. The hand left them and then pulled down what appeared to be several shin guards for playing soccer with. Fredrick lifted up each of his paws so Mary could slip them on him. Finally, a third colander plopped itself down over his ears.

With the moment near, Fredrick looked much less at ease. "I'm... ready, I think," he said.

"Okay," Mary said.

"Ready," Shelly added.

Fredrick nodded. "Okay... COMMENCE!"

Mary and Shelly began to think.

But they were psychics. Their thinking was not ordinary thinking. Blue and silver light rose up around their heads and flowed along the wires attached to the colanders. The machine began to crackle with electricity, or at least something that looked very much like lightning. The lights whirred and flashed at double, triple, quadruple speed. It beeped and booped.

Two brilliant lights of cold-colored psychic lightning bolted down the wires and straight towards Fredrick.

"YEEESSSaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrg!"

Re: Experiment Gone Wrong [Self]

A blinding blast of ice-colored light filled the clearing, along with a crackle of sound. It was a surprising that no one else seemed to wake up. Then again, they'd chosen a fairly secluded spot for exactly that reason.

The blast of light was followed by an immense cloud of smoke. The psychic powers appeared to have overloaded the device and melted several of its key components. Mary, Shelly, and Fredrick all began coughing. They stumbled, trying to find a way out, until a gust of wind blew through the clearing and pulled the clouds away.

With the air cleared, Fredrick finally had a chance to look at himself.

One look at the patterns on his body and he knew he was different. His candy-colored stripes had been replaced with a smooth gradient. His paws were much more narrow; he couldn't retract his claws anymore. As his eyes traveled up his own legs, his giddiness grew. There, jutting out of the back of his legs--[i]legblades![/b] Beautiful candy corn-colored legblades! He tested his new muscles and felt more powerful. Something felt fairly strange about flexing his tails, but his whole muscle structure had just changed. Some things were bound to be different.

Mary and Shelly were staring, but of course they would be. He must look completely different, after all.

"Well? What do you think?" Fredrick asked. He did notice his voice sounded a bit different, but again, that had to be expected. He was in an entirely different body.

"Uh," Shelly said.

"Umm..." Mary went.

"You... you might wanna count your tails there, Fredrick..."

"Count my tails?" he said. "Why would I ever need to do that?" His newly bushy, pointed tails began to twitch. "See? I have one, two, thr--"

His voice stuck in his throat.

"One... two... THREE?!"

"Uhh, well..." Mary began. She wasn't into the same sort of science as Fredrick, and she definitely hadn't expected this outcome.

"This is ridiculous! Outrageous! I'm not a girl! I don't think Ofelia's even--"

He realized what he was about to confess and clamped his mouth shut.

"Hey, don't worry," Shelly snickered. "After all, cooties haven't been proven to scientifically exist, after all."

"Shut. UUUUUP!" he howled. Really, truly howled--if he'd been a Lucain the way he imagined it, it might have been satisfying, but no. He was stuck as a... a girl. How undignified.

"It's only a form change," Mary said. "I'm sure we can fix this easily enough."

"You shouldn't have to fix this in the first place! Seriously, how could you guys have turned me into a GIRL!?"

"I'm sure it's merely something off in the calibrations," Mary said.

Shelly, on the other hand, looked sheepish. She dragged one of her front paws remorsefully through the dirt, scratching nonsense patterns in the soil. "I... might have been thinking in the back of my mind about Ofelia at the time... and, well, you know the effect subconscious states can have on psychic powers..."

Fredrick wished he'd chosen to take a human form instead. Then he could've facepalmed.

"Look at it this way," Mary shrugged. "Sometime in the future, when you're an adult, you might want to take a Lovey-Love Potion. This is just giving you a trial run for what it's like."

"I WOULD NOT!" Fredrick fired back.

"Yeah, because you're going to marry Ofelia and you're gonna live happily ever after," Shelly chuckled.

"I HEARD THAT!"

"Well, duh. I mean, why else are we doing this if not so you could totally mack on Ofelia?"

Fredrick was silent. Then he began to stutter. "W-w-well..."

Mary made thinking sounds to herself and paced in thought. "We could do that, you know. Buy you a Lovey-Love Potion. It wouldn't be permanent, but it'd, uh... um... well, you know." If she'd been human, Mary would have blushed. Talking about the biology like that was a bit too much for a young Kuhna like her. "People do do that, you know. Buy potions to change their bodies. Not so they can have babies with someone, but because it makes them feel more like themselves."

"Yeah. Look on the bright side," Shelly said. "At least you've always been yourself! Er, until now. And besides! I think Ofelia might like girls, too..."

"...You two are the worst friends ever and I never want to see you again."

"We love you too, stinkwad," Shelly replied. "And if you never saw us again, how would we fix you up, huh?"

Fredrick suddenly looked panicked. "Curses! You're right! How am I going to get back to normal now?!"

"How were you planning on getting back to normal if you HAD turned into a male Lucain?"

Fredrick didn't have an answer for that. "Ah... I didn't think that far ahead..."

"She has a point," Mary mewed. "You don't have psychic powers. You would need one of us to help you change back. Unless you planned on asking Ofelia for help. I agreed to help since I, uh, assumed you had a plan for changing back..."

Fredrick let out a deep sigh. "Okay. Yes. I admit it. I can be prone to moments of... let's call it hubris. Yes. Hubris is a dignified word for it..."

"Not to mention plain ol' not thinkin' ahead," Shelly added.

"...But I had hoped that others would be so impressed by the transformation we'd wrought that I wouldn't need to change back for a while. Enough time to think of a solution, anyway..."

For once, Shelly's face fell. She was fond of saying things to rile up her friends; her expression indicated that for once, she was being deathly serious. "You know, I hate to say it, but maybe we SHOULD ask Ofelia for help. She's the most talented psychic out of all of us AND she can swap forms. Her parents don't, so she probably knows some way of helping. She might be able to help you get back to normal."

Fredrick cringed. "But I'd hate for such a noble friend of ours to see me in such a base state..."

"You're just a girl," Mary said, uncharacteristically sharp. "Shelly and I are always girls. It's not so bad."

"Erm, yes," Fredrick said. "Quite. My apologies."
