"Working on Thanksgiving" | Treasures on 42nd [P]

[A character named Abby is also in this roleplay, but does not currently have a pet form.]

Alphonse would not close shop for rain, snow or even holiday. He didn't have any family that he knew of, so Thanksgiving wasn't a very important holiday for him. Tomorrow would be Black Friday, so business would be slow for him this week. Not many people shopped at small stores like his during this time, seeing as the big box stores had huge sales. But, when people started seeking rare and unique gifts for their loved ones, they would come back and business would be back to normal.

The small girl that he had hired weeks before was working out well, and she kept the store clean. Alphy was glad that she didn't try to make much conversation with him, since he didn't know how to relate to someone her age. He was sure he would say something stupid and she would think he was an idiot, so he kept quiet most of the time.

Abigail swept the floors quietly, a song playing in her head as she worked. She liked the quiet work for decent pay, and she thought of ways to tell Alphonse her secret while she worked. Only one person had came into the store today, and that was only to use their restroom. Other than that, it was quiet and she didn't expect any customers. Last week she had learned to use the cash register, and was getting better at counting money every day. Alphonse still watched her closely, not because he didn't trust her, but because he didn't want anyone to swindle her out of what they owed.

A young man with a large burlap sack full of... something, made his way into the store. The door bell ringing as he entered. Alphonse hadn't been expecting anyone today, and had started dozing off before the bell woke him up. "Happy Thanksgiving all!" the young man exclaimed, approaching the counter. Whatever was in the bag made a loud thud as it hit the counter. "My father owns the restaurant up the street and we noticed you were open today. Well, he thought that you guys could use some food, so he whipped up some Thanksgiving dinner for you two."

Abigail stopped sweeping, and stared at the young man through the isles of miscellaneous stuff. She could smell the food even all the way over here, and it was making her mouth water. She had never had Thanksgiving dinner with anyone, and before she started working here, had most of her meals on the street. Whipping her brow with her sleeve, she walked closer to the front counter to get a better view of what the man had brought. Her stomach growled, and she tried moving around to make it stop.

The young man looked over to Abby and smiled, blushing slightly. "There's stuffing, turkey, mashed potatoes... collard greens, deviled eggs. Its all southern food, but we hope you enjoy it." He took the sack off the stack of food inside of tinfoil containers. "We hope you have a very wonderful Thanksgiving." Alphonse didn't know what to say. He had never even met the man's father, or if he had, he didn't know it. "We appreciate your offer, lad. Why don't you pick out something nice in my store for your father, as a thank you gift. I'm sure you know what he likes better than I would.

"Oh, that would be wonderful!" the young lad seemed excited to be able to pick out a gift. He made his way around the shop and Abby silently followed him, watching to see what he would get. Alphonse had all sorts of items, ranging in value from really cheap to expensive jewelry that was locked in a glass box up front. The boy seemed to be making his way back over there, but was looking at the watch section. Not a lot of people used old pocket watches this day, but they fascinated the young boy. A gold on which was very detailed and one of the only ones that still worked, seemed to catch his eye. "Could I get that for my father? He's always asking me what time it is..."

"Yes, yes, of course" Alphonse replied, unlocking the glass box and pulling out the pocket watch. Although it was an expensive watch, and even more expensive during its prime years of its life, not many people bought pocket watches since the invention of the digital wrist watch. "Its a lovely watch and I'm sure your father would enjoy it. Please give him our thanks for the lovely dinner, it smells amazing." He placed the pocket watch gently in the lad's hand, and smiled. "Thanks so much! He will love this!" And with that, the young boy took off and Abigail made her way to the front counter where the food was. Her stomach growled even more audibly now.

The boy had included utensils and napkins with the food, and Abigail pulled out paper plates from the back room. She pulled one of the stools that sat behind the counter, and placed it in front, facing Alphonse. Quietly, she arranged the meal on both plates for them, and covered the remaining food. There was enough for them to have left overs for several days. "That was very nice of them." Her voice was as quiet as a mouse, but since they were alone she was easy to hear while standing that close. "Some people are very kind." he said, smiling.

Abigail said a short prayer in her head, to whatever god was listening. She wasn't very religious, and didn't know much about religion. But she knew that someone had to be watching out for her, since she was having a Thanksgiving meal with her family this year. She would wait to tell Alphonse that she was his niece, at least for a little bit longer. She wasn't sure how he would react, and she didn't want to ruin this moment they were having. She was grateful that she had a job, her family, and a warm meal going into her stomach.

Alphonse started to eat his food as well, making noises of agreement as he took each bite. The food was very good, and still very warm from the oven. He wasn't that great of a cook, so this was better food than he had most days. "Happy Thanksgiving, Abby." he reached across the counter and put his hand on her shoulder, smiling. This was the first year for as long as he could remember that he had company on Thanksgiving, or even a decent meal on Thanksgiving that wasn't tuna or leftovers. "I'll close the shop early today. No ones going to buy anything on Thanksgiving anyways."
