Teach Me To Live [P; SpringsSong]

Fallen branches and small underbrush crunched loudly as they announced the passage of a massive creature, its gait sauntering and unhurried. It moved with the confidence of lack of fear, as if it knew that nothing in the world would dare to even try and cross its path, and rightly so. Pupil-less white eyes deep set in a heavy, thickly horned and armored head swung back and forth, lazily seeking out anything that might pass for food in its path. Any creature with half a mind had already fled miles away at the approach of the monstrous battleheart – to stay was a certain deathwish. However, there was one individual that lurked in the shadows, yet unseen by the predator, trailing its wake of destruction silently.

ImageImage

The stalker was much smaller in stature than the quarry it was following, but of a similar build. However, where the battleheart was thick and heavily muscled, the Paragon in pursuit was slim and agile. He kept his wings tucked closely to his back to avoid rustling leaves or being seen, and only the very tip of his tail flicked from side to side, much like that of a hunting cat. However, the reason why such an outmatched hunter was pursuing this unlikely (and highly dangerous) quarry was entirely unclear. In fact, if anything, it seemed like an impossible task if there ever was one.

“Go on, you can take him. Just think of all the glory it’ll bring you when you go home as the champion who slayed the Terror of Tuun Mountain.”

The voice echoed only in the hunting male Paragon’s head, seeming to originate from his own thoughts. And why wouldn’t it? It seemed like a perfectly reasonable conclusion. After all, this beast had been terrorizing the mountains for years now with no one to stop him, and to be the one who finally ended the reign of terror…He would be a legend. Everything in his life would finally be right – he’d have the respect and admiration he’d always wanted, and perhaps even more.

However, what he didn’t know was that the voice did indeed have an owner of its own, and one who currently watched, unseen, from above. It was one of the perks of being a demi-god; Arktos had the rare ability to take on whatever form he pleased, and at this moment, it happened to be that of a small songbird sitting high in the treetops. Today was one of those rare occasions when his sister wasn’t around to keep tabs on him (or rather, try to keep him on a leash, or as she preferred to think of it, “mitigate some of his damage-doing”), and he intended to take full advantage of it. This young male Paragon who he’d happened to choose would be just the first of many others he’d visit later today, if things went as planned. But for the moment, everything was going exactly the way he wanted it to, and he was content to sit and watch the fun unfold from the safety of his temporary perch.

Runa.  Presently in Paragon form; favored human form here.

The hunting Paragon, the Battleheart, and the demi-god disguised as a songbird were not the only ones that were out in the Tuun Mountains on this day.  Another form was in the skies, although she did not remain in the skies for long.  She'd heard all about the Terror of Tuun Mountain, and had watched the Battleheart for days, but she dared not instigate a battle that she knew that she couldn't win.

That, however, was when she saw another Paragon.

He was following the Battleheart as if hunting him, and Runa frowned as she lighted on a nearby rock, observing the other Paragon for a few moments.  The difference in their sizes was the first thing that worried Runa, but then, there were also the stories about the Battleheart.  He wasn't called the Terror of Tuun Mountain for nothing--regardless of how many thought that they could take on the Battleheart.  She looked around, trying to see if she could sense anyone else--but she shook her head as she slowly edged closer, a small whisper carrying on the wind.

"What will you gain if you fail?  What will you gain if he overpowers you?" the voice would question.  "The beast's reign of terror does need to end, yes... but more thought must be put to this.  Many others have tried, and one day, one--or even a group--may succeed--but not if one is reckless."

Of course, it would be up to the hunting Paragon whether or not he followed the advice--but Runa could not just sit by and let anyone endanger their lives needlessly.  She continued to crouch on the rock she had landed on, watching the scene carefully, her feathered wings held close to her body.
Maybe I'm foolish, maybe I'm blind
Thinking I can see through this to see what's behind
Got no way to prove it, so maybe I'm lying
Take a look in the mirror, what do you see
Can you see it clearer, or are you deceived in what you believe?
Don't ask my opinion, don't ask me to lie
Then beg for forgiveness for making you cry
'cause I'm no prophet or Messiah
You should go looking somewhere higher

I'm only human, I make mistakes
I'm only human, I do what I can
I'm only human, that's all it takes to put the blame on me

Don't put the blame on me

The hunting Paragon was just about to edge closer when another voice suddenly carried to him, this one softer, but somehow more real than the last voice had been. He frowned slightly, fighting the urge to turn his head to look for the source. It didn't sound like it would be a threat to him, so he kept his eyes focused on his much larger quarry, not wanting to miss a single movement of the massive beast. After all, he knew that this venture was far from safe, but he still had confidence that it was within his abilities to do what others could not. The voice in his head had told him so, and the prize that would be his should he succeed was too sweet to simply give up without trying.

"I can succeed. I will succeed," he murmured firmly, but more to himself than to anyone else around him. "I have to. Then everything will be right." With that, he slowly began to creep forward from where he'd been crouched, sneaking closer once again to the receding form of the Battleheart. "Good, good..." the voice in his head crooned once again, stoking his resolve and putting determination back into his step once again. However, the other set of words had not been entirely lost upon him either, but for the moment, he fought the idea of having to listen to logic. This solution was cleaner, and it would solve all of his problems...right?

In the meantime, Arktos, still disguised as a songbird, glanced around for the disturbance, his gaze falling upon a newcomer, this time a female Paragon. He shook off a slight twinge of irritation at her meddling - this was supposed to be his day to do as he pleased without interference since his sister wasn't here to do so. But it seemed that this female Paragon had other plans in mind. Nevertheless, he ignored her for the moment, returning his focus to the hunting male Paragon. Everything could still go as planned, as long as he could keep him convinced that this was a good idea.

Blast, Runa thought to herself, her feathered crest flaring for a moment before it settled, and she reflected on the words that the hunter Paragon had spoken.  Drawing in a breath, she thought to herself again, Normally, this could be seen as admirable... but to take on a foe so formidable by oneself?  To say that they have to succeed, and then everything will be right?

Runa shifted her form, shrinking into a human with wings.  She wrapped her wings around her body as she thought about what she could say to give this Paragon pause, to try and dissuade him from this mission, even if for a short time.

"What will be right?" she asked, the voice barely a whisper on the soft wind.  "What is so important that you feel the need to take on this beast by yourself?"

She pulled one of her wings back, looking to see if she could see if anyone else was there.  Something didn't feel quite right, but... what?

The Paragon that hunted the Battleheart seemed to have already forgotten entirely about the other voice he'd heard briefly for a moment. His concentration was intensely focused on his quarry once again, and the twitch of his tail spoke of nervous anticipation, as if he were on the brink of acting. It was true, he was afraid, but he would not let fear stop him when he had come this far, and was merely moments away from achieving everything he'd ever wanted in life.

He seemed about to finally pounce when the words came unbidden on the wind, once again stilling him for a moment where he stood. He wasn't sure why, but he felt compelled to answer the question. Perhaps it was the small voice of doubt which still nagged at the back of his thoughts, and perhaps he merely needed an excuse to take pause. He was torn between frustration at being stopped once again, but at the same time, relief that the time for action wasn't here just yet. "...Everything," he said slowly, although with less conviction this time than the last. "Everyone will finally respect me and see me as an equal, rather than a child. She'll see me." Of course there was a woman involved. For Arktos, it was always easier to sway those who had someone to impress, for those were the kinds of people who were more easily blinded to reason. "And if I don't, then who will?"

As for Arktos, irritation once again crept up upon him in the form of the intervening Paragon. He flitted to a slightly lower branch, still disguised as a small song sparrow, to get a closer look at who it was that was interfering with his plan. He watched as the female Paragon shifted forms into that of a human with feathered wings, and watched as she spoke to the other male. Why was she doing this? What value did this stranger hold for her? He knew the hunting male's mind, at least well enough to know that this female was not one that he recognized. However, Arktos was also curious to see how this strange female would handle this situation, so he remained where he stood on his unseen perch, watching the play unfold below.

"Will she?"

Runa found herself frowning at the mention of a woman.  Of course, there was nothing wrong with wanting to impress someone, but...where could one draw the line?  She shifted her position so that her skirt pooled around her, and a few wisps of her black-and-orange hair whipped out onto the wind from behind the shield of her feathers.

"You say that they'll respect you and see you as an equal if you do this," Runa said, her voice thoughtful.  "Did they tell you that themselves?  Did they tell you to hunt this terror?  Or is that just how you feel?" she asked.

The Paragon’s unspoken doubt finally seemed to grow strong enough to have an effect, as he finally came to a halt where he remained crouched in the undergrowth. Somehow, the Battleheart still hadn’t taken notice of the presence of anything strange – either that, or it was self-assured enough to not care about the presence of others around him. Being an apex predator had that kind of effect, and never in its life had the beast ever had to fear for itself. Why start now?

The male finally turned to glance behind him, seeking the source of the voice which fed the seeds of the doubt he hadn’t known had existed. His gaze fell upon the feather-winged human standing nearby, and he seemed to regard her thoughtfully, as if not entirely certain that she wasn’t just a figment of his imagination like the voices in his head. “They don’t notice me enough to tell me these things,” he finally replied, his words slow and almost reluctant in tone. He studied the female, as if pondering just how much was prudent to tell her, but seeing as there really wasn’t anyone else in the world he felt like he could talk to (or who would listen), he seemed to decide that there was no danger in speaking his mind.

“What other choice do I have? I know at least that if I succeed in this, I will have done the entire clan an immense favor, and…my existence wouldn’t just fade away and be forgotten after everything is said and done. Is that alone not worth the risk?”

Runa listened carefully, nodding her head slowly as she listened to the male.  After a moment, she shifted back into her Paragon form, so that she could better look at the Paragon male.

"You raise valid points, hunter," she said, dipping her head slightly.  "Those who live around this area would be better off without the threat of that Battleheart stomping around like nothing can touch him, that is true.  But... maybe your clan doesn't think as little of you as you think?" she asked.  "There are people everywhere who think that someone, or a group of people, will only notice them if they do something spectacular, and that they won't be missed if they're gone... except that they are missed," she said, softly.

"However, if you must fell this beast... two sets of claws are always better than one, if you'd welcome my aid," she added in an even quieter voice.

The male Paragon watched curiously as his observer shifted back into her own Paragon form as well, having never seen her before in his life. He knew that other clans existed outside of his homelands, but he’d never actually glimpsed any of them himself until now. His expression turned into a mild frown at her words though, as if struggling to try and believe what she had to say. There was logic in her words, but Arktos’ influence still ran strong in his emotions. Nevertheless, she’d managed to stay him from action for the moment, and he sat back on his haunches thoughtfully, politely considering what she had to say.

If he’d been about to argue against her point, it was lost when he heard the last of what she had to say. Was she…volunteering to help him tackle this monster of a beast? “No,” he said, suddenly vehement once again, but for an entirely different reason this time. “I couldn’t allow you to do that. Putting my own life at risk for my own gain is one thing, but I will not let you get hurt in so dangerous a task for my sake.” He shook his head vigorously to emphasize his point, his wings flicking lightly in agitation at the idea. In truth, he would rather give up on tackling the beast entirely than allow a kindly stranger to be injured – or worse, killed – while trying to aid him on a fool’s errand.

"Very well," Runa said, dipping her head at the hunter's words.  "All the same, I would caution you against tackling the beast alone.  Surely, there must be someone that you can turn to for aid... even if that someone is not from your clan."

Runa looked around warily still, although it was not the Battleheart that she was worried about.  She felt as though there was another presence near them that was more than what it seemed, but she could not be certain.  After a few moments, she returned her attention to the male before her, waiting to see what his response would be.
