What in the world was going on?
The loud blaring of sirens woke the Shinzo up, and he blearily squinted at the flashing lights of the police cars. He grumbled to himself as he slid out of bed. This was bad news. Then again, if cops were around in the Slums, it was
always bad news.
"Oh! Y-you're awake!"
The Shinzo spun around and found his partner, and one of his few trusted friends, Ovi, nervously wringing his wings together. The anthro crow glanced out the window and seemed to cringe at the commotion outside. "You know what happened?"
The Shinzo shrugged. "Make sure everything's hidden. I have a feeling that the cops are going to bust in."
Ovi hurriedly adjusted his grease-covered jacket and took off down the stairs. The Shinzo sat back down on the bed. The covers stirred and a Rabbot B2 stuck her head out.
"Get ready, Allaria," the Shinzo said. Allaria's long ears twitched and she was out in a flash. The Shinzo heard the clattering from the dingy hallways as she was getting out the emergency bags.
The door suddenly burst open, just as a ragged Ovi came back in. The anthro crow gave a half-surprised squawk and seemed to cower before the grim-faced police. The Shinzo was unaffected as he strode up to them. In a crisp, cool tone, he said, "Good evening, gentlemen. May I help you?"
"Police," the tall cop droned. He flashed his badge in front of the Shinzo and eyed Ovi suspiciously. As if that was enough explination, he shoved his way past the Shinzo and began to yank open random doors, handling everything with a great carelessness that made the Shinzo wince.
The short cop that stepped in seemed to be more polite in his manner than his companion. He tipped his overly-tall hat toward them before beginning his search. The Shinzo sat down and watched them with sharp eyes, keeping a calm air around him.
Ovi was the exact opposite. The poor guy paced around the room feverishly, muttering to himself every now and then about 'staying out of dirty affairs'.
"We have visitors, huh?"
Allaria re-entered the room, in her human form, a cigarette in her hand. The Rabbot had little concern from the side-effects of smoking as she reasoned that they wouldn't affect her mechanical body. Still, the Shinzo hated it when Allaria smoked. The lingering, bitter smell always made him gag.
She took a long drag on her cigarette and began to stride over to the Shinzo. The tall cop stopped her.
"Stay where you are," he snapped. "You have the right to remain silent." He ignored her sharp glare and rifled through some of the drawers in the counter before heading toward the other part of the house. The short cop chuckled.
"Pretty thing, aren't you? I'd like it if you'd come around sometime... you know... to hang out..."
Allaria disdainfully held her head up high and didn't answer. The short cop's chuckles ceased and he gave an amused sigh. The tall cop soon came strolling back and snapped, "All right, you!" He jabbed a gloved finger at Ovi. The anthro crow frantically looked around to see if he was talking to anyone else. "I'm talking to you! You're coming with us!"
Ovi paled so much that the Shinzo swore his feathers turned a light gray. "M-me?"
The Shinzo stepped in, not intent on letting his friend go with these monsters. "Pardon me, but I think you've made a mistake. He's just passing by-"
"I know what I'm doing!" The tall cop snapped. "You, bird, come with us! Save your excuses for the court!" He snapped handcuffs over Ovi's wings and proceeded to roughly drag him out. Allaria stepped forward, a dangerous gleam in her eyes. The police raised their eyebrows at this and the short one reached for his taser. The Shinzo raised a paw, signalling for her to control herself. With a growl, the Rabbot returned to her position, her face twisted with hate.
"Smart girl. It's a pity for you to waste your life here." The short cop remarked. "Now if you'll excuse us, we'll be going now. Ta ta."
As they dragged Ovi away, the anthro crow looked back at them, a pleading look in his eyes. The Shinzo met them with a steady gaze, a promise embedded in it.
We will get you out.
The door slammed shut and the sirens soon died away, back into the empty, silent night...
---
"All right, Voltaire, what did you get us into this time?"
The Fallen Luhna regarded them with cold, calculating eyes, though his voice was decievingly warm. "My friends, I assumed you knew the risks of what you were taking on. It was in your contract, in the terms..."
The Shinzo slammed his paw on the desk. "Screw the terms, Voltaire! Ovi was taken away! What is in that package you gave us? It seems to me that the cops want it really bad-"
"Of course they do," Voltaire promptly answered. "Justice doesn't live in the government anymore, my friend. They only steal for themselves and give nothing back to the people. What do you expect? The package I have given you is far more valuable than your friend..."
Allaria had been silent up to this point. Now the Rabbot slammed her paw on their employer's desk and growled, "Listen up. Ovi is far more important than you think he is! Now you start listening closely, or I'll tear your head off!"
"Allaria," Voltaire calmly answered. His golden eyes, though, were flared up in anger and his voice took on a sharp tone. "You always had a temper problem, my dear." He paused, gave a cruel smile. "I suppose you'll want to go after your little friend to save him."
"Of course we do," the Shinzo snapped. "But... you must tell us! What is in that package?"
Voltaire gave a tired sigh. "Very well, then. Do you have it with you on hand?"
Allaria rummaged through the knapsnack she was carrying and shoved a plain looking box, wrapped crudely in newspapers, at the Luhna.
I shall continue when I feel more motivated >3>; Don't worry, I'll get it done before the deadline.
