A wide open area of flat, grassy land and rocky trenches, supposedly a wide range of ancient civilizations once lived here. Species that like wide, open areas, such as Gyrophants, Serraptors, and Sahound, thrive here, though only the agile survive. (+3 Speed)

Terran pumped all six of his legs, accelerating to higher and higher speeds deep beneath the rich soil. He pressed his feet against the solid tunnels walls, clawing forward, walls he himself had dug a day earlier. Roots and small rocks jutted out of the ceiling and floor, leaving nasty scratches in soft wet scales as the large pink radill raced over them. Terran noted his lazy craftsmanship and vowed to fix the tunnel later, if he came back again at all, which he undoubtedly would. After a sudden incline, Terran's bright green mane poked out of the wide entrance, followed by a long neck. He gazed out over the perfectly named vast plains, pieces of earth tumbling down his face. As vast as it was, the plains were also quite unpopulated. Save the vegetation, not a living thing was in sight. Terran sighed. Not in his poor, underground vision, anyway. I'll bet there's a party going on ten feet away from my nose, he thought glumly. He was quite sensitive about his poor sight, even at a young age as an Onpachu variety he could never see a thing. He bayed in frustration and heaved the rest of his worm-like self out of the hole. The fully grown radill flicked his long mane out of his eyes and squinted at the horizon. This time, his eyes were not to blame. There was, literally, no one there. Vast, he thought bitterly, means utterly empty. I hate this place, above and below. Terran reared into a walking position, with his front legs dangling into space, and headed toward nothing in particular. A sunny walk would do him good, he thought, since he was underground all week without photosynthesizing.

My wraiths, though not wraiths then, wandered deep into the heart of the polar storm. They tried to fight sleep, naive to the inevitability of their fate. When they awoke, they saw before them my own self, so much a part of the ice and cold they almost fail to see me. I wear a crown of the coldest, sturdiest ice, and my claws and fur have coated themselves in it.
I stand aloof to the cold, for I have lived in it so long, been a part of it so long, it no longer concerns me.

My wraiths are cursed to wander the polar tundra, eternally freezing, following mortal explorers and trying to warn them with their presence that they should not travel onward, should not make the same mistake. But there will always be those who persist in pressing on, never knowing what they are doomed to face, or destined to suffer.

Avani~~~~~Toelespi

It felt good to have the wind in my hair again.

Well, not that I hadn't had the wind in my hair recently--I'd still been flying--but it had been ages since I'd been, and felt, truly free. Everything had been on my back for so long before this. The war, my family... Now, though. Ah, now! I had left it all behind me, and I was once more free to roam as it suited me. Oh, certainly, my little caravan had grown since then. But though we kept our responsibilities to each other, no one outside was there to tie us down.

"How's Toelespi looking, Avani?" I called back over my shoulder.

"Hold on! I'll ask him!" My Paragon turned to the Seraphant, laden down with bags and packages, and with what seemed to be a small tent pitched on his enormous back. She said a few words to him in pet language. He hissed back.

"He'd like to come down for a while!" the Paragon called back, over the wind.

"OK! Bring us down, Sky!" I said to Skycutter.

"Can-do, Jimmy!" the Garudor replied.

My party began to circle and descend, falling toward the Vast Plains below. Even though we were in the midst of Lambastia--miles and miles from my Barakkan home--I couldn't help but recall the vast acres of artificial flatland surrounding my home. I wondered if, in ages past, there had been something like a jungle or a forest here as well--until some long-forgotten culture came along and tempered it.

Sky landed with her usual finesse. Avani flapped her wide, circular wings and landed down beside us, her outstretched neck hardly the height of Skycutter's beak. Toelespi the enormous Seraphant circled and coiled a few feet away, and he flapped his tiring wings. Krii and I lept down from Sky's back, stretching our legs.

Krii, I noticed, put his nose to the ground almost immediately.

I looked down at him. "Yo. 'Sup, Krii?"

Krii responded by dashing forward several feet, peering into a strange, deep, alien hole.

"Krii?" asked Avani.

The Rengosett reached up with one paw and scratched his head. "Judging from the looks o' this plain," he said, snooping along the ground, "this place has got a SERIOUS prairie dog problem."

Terran looked around wildly, sorely feeling his lack of sight. He'd felt the vibration through his feet. Someone had hit the ground, whether it was a great bird landing or something else punching a clod of dirt he didn't know. Terran coughed, a sort of chuff sound that he hoped would tell anything near him that he wasn't tame and docile. He growled softly, stressed, not sure if the new thing would try to hurt him.

"Hey! Lookie over there!"

Krii got up on his back legs and pointed. I skipped over to where he was, watching him point.

Sky shuffled up next to us, watching the ground and trying to avoid the holes. "Wha? What is it?"

"Over there," Krii said. "I see somebody!"

I felt Avani move into place beside us. Her head tilted. "Hmm... He looks rather muddy. D'you suppose he was the one digging all these odd holes?"

"HEY!" I called out. I put my hands up to my mouth to shout. "HEY! OVER THERE! HELLO!"

Toelespi shifted nervously. We were ignoring him and his heavy load in favor of looking after this strange fellow. I looked back at him, but, awful person that I am, my curiosity was piqued by the distant, red figure.

Terran's ears flicked up. He craned his neck over his shoulder and caught figures dancing at the very edge of his line of vision. He stared, then suddenly remembered how muddy he was. He tried to shake away most of the dirt still stuck to him, and slouch a little to not appear so large. All 25 feet of his height went down to a comical 24 and a quarter. "Sorry, I didn't see you," he said as he lumbered up to them, "I'm Terran. Have you traveled far?" he asked, glancing over Toelespi's large load.

Oh, my goodness.

I mean, I've seen Riopath and Radill before. We have them at home. But there's just something visceral and unnerving about having twenty-five feet of hexapedal reptile staring down your face.

Somewhat more nervous, now, I waved. "Um. Hi."

Calm as usual, Sky replied, "Yes. A rather long way. All the way from Barakka. We were on our way to Basantha Shrine, but we needed to rest. Our carrier was getting quite tired." She threw a wing in Toelespi's direction. The Seraphant nodded at her, and gave me a particular dirty look.

"Yeah, yeah, I see you," I said. "Sorry, sir, but I have to go get this..." I walked over to him and began to help unfasten his bags.

Krii, meanwhile, looked up and down the Radill. "What were you diggin' all those holes for? Buildin' a bomb shelter?"

"Well, Radill dig, don't they?" asked Avani.

"Yeah, but usually there's a reason for it," Krii replied.

Terran's posture jolted back to normal. "Barakka!" he almost shouted in shock. "All the way from Barakka? Across all that... water?" he gasped, and shook his head slightly. He couldn't comprehend it. He had dug tunnels long enough to encircle the globe a few times, but traveling over water? It was too hard for him to swim through, and he was too heavy (and afraid) to take a boat. He choked down his thoughts to listen to the rest of what Sky had to say.

"Holes? The tunnels, you mean?" he asked Krii, and laughed. "I live down there." Terran nodded to the largest hole. "That one in particular goes down about, oh, fifty feet deep, then over five miles out," he said, going over lengths in his head to check if his numbers added up.

MUSE // TYPHON

[sub]Muse sat huddled over a short, rough tree stump, his journal open on the surface and  a quill in his hand. An acorn served as an inkwell, and Muse scrawled words across the pale yellowed parchment. He scratched at his head feathers and carefully swept them to the side. Next to him napped a Chombones, his rusty-colored fur rustling with every exhalation. Muse blew softly on the damp ink and snapped the journal shut. Typhon, the Chombones, leaped up with a squawk and shook his massive gray head. "Did I wake you? I'm sorry," Muse said, smiling apologetically. "Eh, it wasn't the greatest dream anyway," Typhon said, shrugging. "While I'm up, I'll just stopper that fer you, Mu." The Chombones took the acorn and its cork - an old, ink-stained wine cork - and shoved it into the acorn's hole. Muse took his journal and bottle of ink and placed them in his cloak pocket. "Come, Typhon. I hear voices nearby. Maybe they have some food."

The two comrades strode across the tough grass, Muse sneezing out clouds of dust that accidentally blew into his mouth. They saw a worm-like creature that Muse identified as a Radill, and four other creatures - some too far away to identify, but as far as Muse could tell a Temple Garudor and a Rengosett. "Excuse me, good men and women," Muse called out to them, raising a claw. "You wouldn't mind to have any food on you that you would be willing to give us? We're a little short, unfortunately." Muse refrained from looking meaningfully at Typhon - the little Chombones had the stomach of a vacuum cleaner.[/sub]

"You can't comprehend us travelin' over the water, but you live in five miles o' holes underground?" Krii said.

Both Sky and I were quick on the draw. We both chided, "Krii!"

"It's not so bad," I said. "All you need is a strong pair o' wings to get you across, and some patience."

Sky said nothing, but she fluffed her feathers proudly.

Meanwhile, out of the corners of my eye, I saw a pair of strangers approaching. A Chombones and a Sygriff, from the looks of it. Too caught in my conversation, I couldn't--ah, but there went Avani. Attagirl.

"Food? You mean you journeyed all the way out here without any supplies? Well, that's silly." But she turned her head thoughtfully. "But I do suppose we have some rations we could spare. Toelespi, if you could--"

The Seraphant growled, low and obliging, and bowed his head. Avani stuck her head inside of the mass of doodads and tarps strung over his back and lifted her forepaw. She brought out a small box, opened the top, and tossed a package of bagels and a jar of peanut butter at the two who'd just appeared.

Muse nodded, picking up the objects from the ground. "Much obliged. Thank you." Typhon attacked the bagels, tearing at them ravenously. Muse saved several from being swallowed by Typhon, who licked his lips and grinned. "I suppose you can see the reason for our...food shortage," Muse said, giving an explanatory glance at his comrade. Typhon shrugged and licked the crumbs off his fur. "I'm Typhon, and this 'ere is Muse," Typhon said, introducing them. Muse nodded and dipped his head in greeting.  [/sub]

Terran watched Typhon with fascination. Not even he himself, 25 feet long with an equally large stomach, could inhale food like that. He bowed his head in laughter suddenly when the mental image of a small vacuum cleaner appeared in his head. Terran tossed his hair back to compose himself and stepped forward. "Terran," he said simply. He looked back at the first four he'd met with a questioning expression. "I don't believe I got your names...?"

"Oh! Where are our manners," I said. "Jimmy. Jimmy Dashall. Err... Do you shake?" I put out my hand warily.

"Krii," Krii said, and he waved a paw.

"Skycutter," she said, flapping her wings. "Pleased to meet you. Call me Sky."

Avani chuckled at Typhon first, gobbling up the bagels. Then she turned to Terran. "Avani," she said. "Avani the Earth, if you want to be formal."

Toelespi growled lowly and spread his wings. In pet language, I think he was saying something like, "I am Toelespi. Pleasure's all mine."

"I don't," Terran said in reference to the handshake, "My thumbs aren't opposable and my talons are wickedly sharp. I won't remove fingers in the name of politeness, otherwise I would shake that hand," he joked with a slight grin and wiggled the spear-donned toes on his dangling front legs. He bowed in return at each greeting, then found Avani's title of 'the Earth' somewhat amusing. I lived in the stuff from day one, and he had earned no fancy title. Then one day I meet a lovely creature who looks very much of the sky, yet named for the ground? he thought, searching the paragon for anything he thought of as "earthy". Hah, mi cabeza, I think I have a bit to learn here, he thought to himself, and resigned to wondering.

"Indeed I do. It's been a while, however," Muse said with a smile, grasping Jimmy's hand in his own paw and giving it a firm shake. Typhon tried to do the same, but was too short, and instead gave a polite bow. Typhon glanced up at the Radill, and then the Placid Paragon, and then the Garudor, and finally the Seraphent - they were all so big. Typhon wasn't used to creatures much larger than Muse, and - ignoring Muse's lessons on etiquette - released a loud whistle. "Wow, you guys are so-o-o-o tall. Are the folks here all so big?" he turned to Muse, who was sighing apologetically. "Remember what we spoke about, Typhon," Muse reminded him gently. "Oh, my apologies, fellas," Typhon grinned up at the others, who were massive compared to him.

"Oh, and what am I?" Krii said grumpily. "Just go ahead and ignore the short guy! It's not like you'd be the first people!"

"Oh, I'm not so big," Avani said, putting a paw in front of her chest. "As you can see, Jimmy and I are about the same height, and she's 5'5". Placids are the smallest Paragon, after all."

"And Toelespi is larger than normal, for a Seraphant," Sky explained. "That's why he makes such a good carrier. Isn't it, boy?"

Toelespi made a deep, contented sound that was almost like a pur.

"I'll admit," I said to Terran, "you are pretty large. But I suppose it's not so weird, eh?"
