Blind Date: Vincent x Sarsaparilla

Postby Silver » 02/18/2017 8:03 AM

What a lovely day. It was warm without being hot, sunny without being bright, and breezy without being windy. All of that, and it happened to be a Saturday, so most people had the time off to enjoy it. The streets were buzzing with happy people, out enjoying the good weather.

Not that she really cared about any of that. Sarsaparilla strolled confidently down the street and into her favorite cafe. She flicked her hair back, looked over the top of her sunglasses and smirked. She and the barista briefly made eye contact, and gave one another a subtle nod. Without a word, she turned on her heels and headed back outside to her favorite shady spot. There she sat for a few minutes before a hot cup of coffee arrived, prepared exactly the way she liked it.

With a genuine smile, she turned toward the park and watched the people go by.

Vincent-Theodore Bartholomew rubbed his temples as he sat outside the small cafe. Why did writing have to be so difficult? With a sigh, the man leaned comfortably in his chair and tilted his head back. He let the sun warm his face as he closed his eyes. It was a beautiful day, and it wasn't often that he left the house. Unfortunately, it was due to a plot of his dear nephew.

Frowning at the reminder, he resumed his previous sitting position. Speaking of which, he narrowed his eyes and scanned the other patrons of the cafe. I suppose I should look for my date. He practically sneered the word aloud, but kept his face impassive.

Looking over the top of his laptop, he noticed a rather stylish woman sitting by herself, her smile seeming to have an almost sharp edge to it. Plastering on his usual smirk, he closed the laptop gently and slipped it back into his bag. After shouldering the laptop bag, he grabbed the still full cappuccino and made his way to the woman's table.

Standing off to the side, but still in her line of view, he bowed slightly, smirk still in place. "Vincent Bartholomew," he intoned with a drawl as he held out his hand. "It's a pleasure to meet your acquaintance, Miss...?"

And is there a God up there? 'So,

'Cause the devil is raging inside my

And is there a moment where it all
makes sense?

The bright light of the sun through the clear sky reflected off her dark sunglasses, hiding her gaze as she watched the world go by. Every now and then, she would draw her mug up to her lips and take a long, slow sip of sweet coffee. Sarsaparilla could easily spend her whole day doing this. That is, if she weren't waiting for someone.

Today was a rare sort of day. To the surprise of everyone but herself, she had agreed to go on a date. Not only was it a date, but a date with a stranger at that. Therefore it came as no surprise when a young man approached her table. Though it wasn't obvious from behind her sunglasses, she had been sizing him up from the moment he stood up. Apparently, she decided he was worth her time, because as he introduced himself, she put on a welcoming smile.

"Sarsaparilla," she finished for him. Then she took another long, slow sip of coffee, looking over the top of her glasses at him. After a few tense seconds of silence, she waved her arm at the empty chair opposite herself and said, "Well, have a seat."

The few moments between her introduction and invitation seemed to have no effect on the man. It wasn't like he was a stranger to being scrutinized, after all.

At her approval, The elder Bartholomew's smirk widened, and he slid into the seat across from her, setting his bag gently onto the ground beside him. He looked back up as he brought the cappuccino to his lips. Swallowing the sweet drink, he sighed. "A lovely name," he complimented smoothly.

His gaze traveled out across the various pedestrians as he soaked in the calm atmosphere. He took another moment to enjoy the comfortable silence before turning his gaze back to the woman. "So, I suppose we should get to know each other, hm?" Vincent was never one to trip over meaningless small talk. Setting down his drink, he leaned gracefully against the back of his chair, gaze never leaving hers through the shield of her sunglasses.

Sarsaparilla often found that people were tense in her presence. It came as a pleasant surprise that this man, Vincent he had said, seemed perfectly comfortable. If she was going to date someone, it was probably for the best that they weren't intimidated by her, after all.

Oh, right. Getting to know each other. This was not a part that Sarsaparilla fancied. She was a very private person, and therefore wasn't terribly fond of talking about herself. Plus, it wasn't like she could go broadcasting what she actually studied to people she barely knew. Luckily for her, he carried an easy conversation starter with him.

"Well," she began after another sip of coffee. Surely, her cup would be empty soon, if it wasn't already. "I see you brought this with you," she waved her hand in the general direction of his laptop bag. "Working on anything exciting?" The smirk on her face indicated that she very much wanted to know the answer.

Vincent's smirk was traded in for something much more genuine. It wasn't often he got to talk about his work, and he truly enjoyed the rare moments he was able to discuss it. Grinning softly, he gestured loosely down at the bag. "In my off time, I happen to write novels," he explained, patting the bag lovingly. "I focus mainly on simple stories, with relatable characters. Unfortunately, I've overheard some saying they aren't as exciting as they would like."

He shrugged at the last comment, as if showing it doesn't bother him. "I find them to be quite exciting, in any case." He winked and took another sip of his drink. "I regret that I am unable to tell you more, but surely you understand that every writer has their secrets?" It was bad enough when he was recognized as a Bartholomew. He didn't need strangers harassing him about the writings of Vicky T. Barrett.

"And you?" The elder Bartholomew steered away from his previous thoughts immediately, focusing the conversation more on his date. "Do you happen to do anything interesting?"

Sarsaparilla listened to what he had to say with genuine interest - a rare occasion for her. While she hated to admit it, she always had a soft spot for creative types. There was something so intriguing about the mind of a writer, and the many lives that they lived through their work. Even if they were, as he said, just 'simple stories'.

"Lovely," she purred. Secrets? What a tease! She wasn't about to press him for more, but she found her curiosity piqued. "I guess I'll just have to see when it comes out, then."

Sarsaparilla hated this question. The answer was always a lie. Or at the very least, a clever dance around the truth. Just enough information to not be a complete fabrication, but not enough to really understand. Though she did take note of the fact that he had just done the same to her.

"I study engineering," she said in a rather matter-of-fact way. Engineering what, she was not about to say.

For a moment, Vincent considered telling her the titles of a few works. What could it hurt if they only met up for one blind date, anyhow? He quickly shook off the idea, remembering why he was writing under a pen name in the first place, and returned to the topic at hand.

Vincent's smile spread widely once again. Engineering? "Engineering?" He repeated the thought out loud, eyes sparkling with a calm excitement. Even though the woman was nothing like his nephew, the thought of engineering reminded him of Barry all the same.

Leaning forward, he continued on from his previous inquiry. "That's definitely interesting, and difficult, at that," he remarked. "You must be quite intelligent to be studying in that field." He winked, then, encouragingly. "Beauty and brains!"

He backed off then from the flirting slightly, not wanting to crank up the charm too high this early on. "Any specific branch?" He asked as he reached for his drink once more. "Mechanical, chemical, the like?"

(*I apologize for us not figuring this out until the very end, but would it be alright for our date to be moved to Aldrect, the Holy City? Thank you!)
