A very strange place indeed, this Shrine to the Holy Triumvirate is nestled within the icy peaks of the Fe'gan Mountains. You will find the warmth of spirituality here, together with works of great sculptural design based on the Holy Triumvirate religion. (+2 Fame)

Return to Basantha Shrine

the elements of a dark story | hunter hunt/re2 | open

The winter winds howled as they dragged across the peaks of the mountain. To a being such as herself, who lost all feeling long ago, they were not a worry for her. The cold was little more than a loud nuisance slicing past her ears, shrieking and whistling in such a way that made her clench her teeth. Jerking her cape closer to her, Senka took another step up the winding staircase.

Her beastial form would be more apt in ascending the mountain, not this scrawny sack of meat she had to lug with her will. Secrecy, however, ah, how much that lizard had emphasized it to her. Secrecy was of the utmost importance, as any traces that she left behind were sure to be signposts leading them straight to them.

The shrine's grand wooden doors rose into view. To her disgust, she glanced down and found that her legs were shaking. This body, with its emaciated form, hair little more than black straw sticking out every which way...

"To think that I asked for it," she murmured.

As a gust of air washed out from the shrine's interior, Senka sunk onto the floor against her will, breathing heavily. Though she couldn't feel any sensations such as pain or cold, the toll on this body still existed. She leaned against the wall, tugging the hood over her disfigured face, allowing a sarcastic smile to twist her mouth.

She thought that the lizard had been awfully generous when he gave her permission to wander off like this. Perhaps he intended for her to die from overexertion to keep her away from his precious mistress. The thought made her chuckle.

What a spiteful creature.

She'll kill him when she got back as thanks.

Cold, icy stone steps and whistling winter winds cut through her furry coat as if it were made of silk.  On a personal level, Zalmon despised cold weather.  But as a hunter, she felt it important to grow accustomed to all weather changes.  They tended to get more and more random every year, and she wanted to have her endurance up to par for any challenge.

That was why she decided, perhaps against her better judgement, to scale a mountain.  A mountain!  As if the weather changes weren't enough, Zal had managed to convince herself that taking on a whole new terrain would be an excellent idea.  So there she stood, cautiously scanning the path ahead and struggling every few steps to keep her footing.  After plenty of slipping and sliding, she managed - finally - to reach the massive wooden door entrance to the Shrine.

Forcing her way in, she allowed herself a moment to bask in the rush of warm air.  It would seem the monks kept the Shrine well heated in this weather; Zalmon had come expecting to go hunting in a nearly empty, freezing old building.  But who was she to complain?  After all she'd been through on the way up, the warmth was more than welcome.

Feeling the icy wind still on her back, she took the time to close the door before cautiously proceeding to explore the grandiose room.

((Hi, nice to meet you and welcome back to the Lands!  I'm Pickle~  Hope you don't mind a stranger dropping in!))

I think back to the time when my search first began,
I left behind those shores of sand
For the endless everlasting world out there.

(Totally down with it! Nice to meet you, Pickle~)

The creaking of the doors echoed through the old shrine, reverberating. Senka straightened up against the wall. Footsteps were approaching. A pilgrim? Or maybe an unfortunate traveler like her, who didn't have the sense not to ascend a mountain in the middle of winter. Regardless of whoever it was, she had a chance.

Once the Taigra came into view, she struggled to her feet. She was panting heavily, despite herself. Her body was still weak. She could not move like this without resting for a while, unless she wanted it to fall apart. Much to her chagrin, she may even have to ask for help-- would have to, at this point.

"Ah-- you--" It wasn't too difficult to sound weak. Throw on a pitiful look, to add the finishing touches. "You there. Please... will you help...?"

So eager to embrace the warmth, Zalmon proceeded into the candle-lit room with little caution.  It was a huge place, a true work of art.  The stones were carved in intricate designs and statues stood guard throughout the great room.  She studied the scenery in awe, but was rather startled when a weak voice interrupted her.  So much for being a great hunter, always aware of her surroundings.

Snapping her head to focus on the source of the sound, she saw a frail creature - a Kasuga, it looked like - huddled against the wall.  Surely it hadden't braved the stormy snow outside on it's own?  But, Zal noted, the Kasuga's condition certainly hinted to that conclusion.

Acting quickly, she approached with concern written on her feline features.
"What can I do to help you?"
As a being of action, Zal figured it was best to get right to the point.  She just hoped it was within her capabilities to help this creature instead of some frantic request to escort it back down the mountain.

It was her lucky day, then. This Taigra seemed more than willing to help her. Though her features didn't allow much for expression, Senka did her best to give her impression of a smile. "Please..." Her voice rattled. "Would you let me walk with you? I... It was a long journey up this mountain... I'm at the end of my strength."

She ducked her head, giving a soft snort. "I didn't expect it to be so difficult..."

Zal was rather surprised when the Kasuga requested to simply walk with her.  Judging from its condition, she'd expected to be asked to give some kind of medical assistance.  Nevertheless, she was in no position to decline the request.

"Of course you can walk with me.  Is there anywhere you specifically need to go?"
As long as they were traveling together, she felt it best to find out where she could leave this creature and continue her hunting.  Not that she wouldn't ensure its safety, no; she merely acknowledged the fact that an injured companion might get in the way and slow things down.  Perhaps they might be able to find some monks in the temple that could help - hopefully before they ran into any Hunters.  Zal didn't like the notion of being responsible for the life of the Kasuga.

Escort secured, Senka clacked her teeth together and bared them in a grin. The pain was beginning to dull, though not to the point where she'd be able to walk on her lonesome without risking great injury. A brief flash of green light enveloped her fragile form, transforming her into a human. This body was no better than the previous one--its skin was pale and its limbs knotted and bony... and above all, its skeletal face was hideous, though she did her best to hide it beneath the shadows of her hood. Let it appear as though she's dependent on this Taigra. She rest her hand against the others side, letting out a whistling sigh.

"... nowhere in particular. I am but a humble pilgrim. Thank you, Miss...?"

The sudden change of form caught Zalmon slightly off guard, but she recovered quickly.  She was aware that others had a shapeshifting ability such as the one she just witnessed, but very few times had she seen it in action.  This poor creature's form didn't appear in any better health than it's previous Kasuga persona.  Zalmon silently wondered to herself if shapeshifting took much energy.  If so, it would likely make the other even more tired, which may become a problem.

"Hey, take it easy.  I'm happy to help you find someone who can help you.  My name is Zalmon," She spoke kindly, allowing the other to rest against her.
"We should probably get going, huh?" She added softly, taking a few steps while supporting her companion.

((sorry for the late reply!))

"Zalmon... I see. Yes, let's." It was fortunate that she ran across someone this kind. If it'd been someone else, one who gave little care to her state, the task may have been a tad more difficult. Shapeshifting did use up some of her energy, that was true. But keeping up the facade was just as important.

Their footsteps echoed quietly throughout the shrine. It'd been years since she been here, centuries perhaps. Not much has changed: the markings on the walls were still the same, as were the countless candles casting light. It was almost nostalgic to think about. The last time she'd been here she had caused quite some trouble for the monks here. It'd been fun.

Senka glanced at Zalmon as they walked. "What brings you here... if I may ask?"

Step by step they progressed through the grand room of the extravagant building.  Zalmon wasn't sure which hallway to go through, so she took a random guess and went for the one in the middle.  She was so focused on helping this stranger - whose name she had yet to learn - that it took her a moment to reply to the question that was asked.

"Oh, me?  I'm actually a hunter, by profession.  I heard that there are some wild creatures of interest here that have been giving the monks trouble and thought I might check it out," she replied honestly, eyes lighting up as she spoke about her hobby.  She truly loved the adventure and emotion that came with taking down her prey, and especially enjoyed the duty when it greatly benefited others.
"How about you?" Zalmon asked in return before momentarily regretting the decision, afraid that too much speaking might be hard on this fragile creature.

"Creatures?" she repeated softly. "My oh my. That sounds quite frightening to me. You must be someone truly brave to attempt something like that." Senka tilts her head at her, letting out a whistling sigh.

"I'm afraid that I'm much more of a coward than you are. I... I suppose you could say that I'm a wanderer of sorts. I've never stayed in one place too long. It's in my blood, as my parents would have said. They, too, were wanderers--I don't think I remember a time when we've ever settled down." It's a lie, partially. She lets her eyes drop. "It was a lonely but good life."
