He pushed further into the labyrinth of gray stone. He suddenly realized that somewhere around here, Barsalla had perished, and with a twinge of sadness, he recalled his mother's face. One hundred years had given Trattam plenty of time to grieve, and he no longer felt the pain that he experienced in the first few days following his mother's death. But every so often, there would be something that reminded him of her, something that would summon a more muted sorrow.

He became so absorbed in his memories that he started when there came a loud rustling nearby. The Frost turned to the direction of the sound, only to find that it was caused by a solitary Slynx in passing. The feline gave him an inquisitive look before continuing on its way. Trattam mentally scolded himself; had that been an Earth tribe Paragon, he could have gotten jumped on out of the blue.

As if to emphasize the great danger of the situation, the light, familiar smell left behind by Fire tribe Paragon soon faded and was replaced by a heavier, sharper odor. This was the mark of the Earth tribe, a signal that denoted where the territories' borders met. Passing over this invisible line meant there was a chance that Trattam would meet an Earth tribe patrol, and as the only Fire dragon around, he would be severely outnumbered if they chose to fight him. He became increasingly worried for Telufahn as well. Could the Primal have made it this far? Was his dear friend already in the clutches of the Earth tribe? He prayed that this was not the case.

Soon, the Frost came upon a space between two mountain slopes that was fairly open. A small stream ran through the middle of the area, and tiny alpine flowers bloomed along its course. Trattam bent down to lap some of the crystal clear water. It refreshed him, and when he got his fill, he took a wide step across the brook to the other side. But before he proceeded, a faint imprint in the ground caught his eye. He lowered his head, peered at it closely, and sniffed. There was no mistaking it. This was Telufahn's track.

He scanned all around the opening, hoping to catch a glimpse of white scales. His heat sensing organs detected nothing, and unfortunately, since he was in the middle of Earth tribe lands, he could not call out for his friend without risking trouble. Ultimately, Trattam determined that Telufahn was not in the area any longer. He continued on his way, following any trail of Fire tribe scent he could catch.

The search brought the Frost ever higher above the earth. He reached a good two thousand feet altittude, and while he didn't mind climbing, he still wished that he had wings on his back as opposed to rows of webbed spines. Being able to fly over the mountains as opposed to walking through them would give him a useful aerial view and take the stress off his feet. And furthermore, Telufahn could fly as well. It was entirely possible that the Primal's wings had carried him somewhere Trattam could not reach easily, though flying was also a great way to get spotted in enemy territory. Trattam hoped that his tribemate was smart enough to realize this.

At this height, there were still a few patches of evergreen trees scattered here and there. It couldn't really be called a forest; one had to venture east to the Wood tribe in order to encounter anything resembling woods. Yet they still provided Trattam and his unfortunately bright scales with much needed cover from potential Earth tribe eyes. He moved amid them whenever he could, taking care not to snap too many branches or to brush against their needles loudly.

He was in the middle of one such tree cluster when he heard the distinct sound of dislodged rocks rolling down somewhere ahead. The spines on his head raised in alertness. Lowering himself to the ground, Trattam crawled towards the direction of the noise. He reached the very edge of the trees and poked his head out between their trunks a tiny bit, just enough to glimpse what was around the corner.

He heaved a deep sigh of relief.

Telufahn was climbing a series of short ledges that led up the mountainside. He was making quite a commotion with all the pebbles he sent falling to the ground, and Trattam had to shake his head at the lack of stealth. For a moment he deliberated the best method of grabbing his friend's attention and decided to bat a nearby branch. It resulted in a rustle loud enough to make the Primal freeze.

"Telufahn!" Trattam hissed. "Down here!"

Telufahn nearly tripped on one of the ledges as he whirled around frightfully. Even from a distance, Trattam could see that his friend's eyes were icy pools of shock, and it took a moment for the tension to dissipate from them.

"T-trattam?" the Primal called. "Is that you?"

Trattam scanned their surroundings and confirmed that all was clear. He stepped out from the trees and bounded up to Telufahn, who in turn rushed down to greet him. They collided somewhat roughly and touched their muzzles together, both relieved to see each other safe and sound. But the greeting was short lived. Soon, Telufahn ducked back from the Frost with his head held low.

"W-what are you doing, Trattam?" he whimpered. "Did...did you follow me all the way out here?"

"I think I ought to ask you what you're doing," Trattam huffed. He struggled to find the right balance of firmness and sympathy. "Telufahn, I told before you that it's a terrible idea to wander off into these lands, even if it's important to you."

The Primal's dark wings flared out. "I-I know that! But Trattam, I...I haven't seen my father in years. I can't tell you how much I miss him, and my mother worries about him too. I'm sure he wants to know how we're doing!"

Trattam sighed and shook his head. "I realize you feel that way, but it's too dangerous to go wandering straight into Earth tribe territory alone, especially since we don't know what they've been up to lately. Please, friend. I beg you to reconsider and come back with me."

Suddenly, Telufahn's gaze hardened, and his lips pulled into a tight frown. "I...d-don't know why I bother to try convincing you. Y-you're not a mixed blood. You don't...you don't understand how it feels to be me."

The words were so unexpected, so harsh, that Trattam staggered backwards as if they had clawed him in the face. Before he could recover, Telufahn dashed back to the cliff and scrabbled up the rocks, making a dangerously loud ruckus. The Frost instinctively wanted to shout after his friend, but doing so would likely attract the attention of Earth Paragon. He gritted his teeth and pursued the fleeing Primal instead, heaving his body up the rocks before him.

Trattam was never far behind Telufahn, but after a while of running, his friend made a powerful leap and thrust out his wings, taking to the air. The sight made Trattam grumble in frustration. It would have been simple to catch up to Telufahn on the ground, having years of experience with hunting prey in the mountains, but now his companion could very easily fly away. The Frost watched in dismay as his friend vanished behind a tower of rocks...only to come soaring back in a matter of seconds, eyes filled with alarm.

"T-they're r-right there!" Telufahn squealed, zipping right past. "A h-hundred of them!"

Trattam skidded to a halt and shouted over his shoulder. "A hundred of what?"

The other dragon did not get a chance to answer, as suddenly a dark blur dived down from the sky and tackled Telufahn out of the air.

The assailant was an olive Placid sporting purple, crystalline wings and a piece of gemstone hanging around her neck from a string. She was significantly smaller than Telufahn, yet the force of her strike had been enough to knock the wind out of him when he crashed, a commendable feet for a species not typically known for fighting. Before he could make a move, she strode over to him and pinned down his head with her claws, glaring at him with eerie, yellow eyes. The scent coming off her scales was unmistakably that of the Earth tribe.

"Intruder," she hissed, "why have you come to our territory?"

"L-let me go!" Telufahn wailed. He kicked his feet about in an effort to shake her off, but the Placid merely applied more pressure to his skull, making him cry in pain. "P-please! I p-promise I'll never come here again!"

"As if the Earth tribe could trust one from another clan! I repeat, why are you here?"

Trattam rushed up to the two dragons and positioned himself right in front of the Earth Paragon. "Release him at once!" he roared.

The Placid initially gazed at him in annoyance, but soon her expression changed to one of intrigue. "Oh? Who do we have here? If it isn't Azelus and Barsalla's son. My, you do look quite like your parents. I don't suppose you're as weak as they are in battle, too?"

Slowly, the Placid's identity dawned on the Fire tribe's heir. This was none other than Merylus, the same dragon who killed his mother in battle, as well as the leader of the Earth tribe. There was no other Paragon worse to run into, but he had come here to bring Telufahn back home safely, and by the gods, he would stand his ground against this female even if he risked his life. He dug his claws into the ground and took a deep breath.

"We do not seek a quarrel with you," he said, trying to keep his tone even. "I came here to take my friend back to the Fire tribe. If you'd permit me to leave with him, we'll promise not to cause any trouble on our way out."

Merylus did not seem convinced. "Fire and Earth have always been enemies," she spat, lashing her spiked tail. "I have no reason to trust your words. Even if you did come here for your little friend, that doesn't explain why he's here. He may very well be spying on my dragons! No, I will not let either of you go. You will both be imprisoned for trespassing on our lands!"

She raise her head and let out a shrill screech. Trattam snarled and pounced, but the Placid was too nimble and dodged so that the Frost only landed on Telufahn instead. The Primal cried in pain and dashed out from underneath him, but Merylus blocked the way, extending her wings so Telufahn could not move past them.

The next moments were all a blur. Trattam implored Merylus one last time to let them leave, but before he could receive a response, two gigantic Earth Paragon flew down out of nowhere and grabbed Telufahn by the shoulders, hoisting the him into the air. The Primal screamed and flailed as he dangled precariously in their grips, trying to wriggle free from his captors, but all they did were sink their claws in for a better hold, drawing blood out of the white scales. Trattam roared furiously as he watched them carry his friend out of reach. This was one moment where he desperately wished he had wings.

"PUT HIM DOWN!" he snarled.

"Imbecile!" Merylus hissed. "Did you not hear me the first time around? So as long as our tribes are foes, I will not tolerate any Fire dragon setting even one claw on our lands!"

Something about her words stirred a thought deep in Trattam's mind, but he was in no position to contemplate it right now. Merylus was now flying away, following the two Paragon that held Telufahn captive. Powered by anger and frustration, Trattam sped after them, scrambling over rocks and clearing chasms. Having his motion restricted to the ground was tedious. Still, he made good time and did not let them out of his sights.

He did not stop moving until he arrived at the rock tower Telufahn had flown around earlier. What he saw beyond there made him skid to a dead stop and stare in absolute shock.

Re: A Clash of Fire and Earth (Self, Rewrite)

Postby Thunder » 05/09/2014 12:09 AM

The "hundred" Telufahn referred to was an inconceivably large gathering of Earth tribe Paragon, a scaly mess of wings and teeth and claws amassed around a water filled crater. Merylus and the other dragons were flying towards a rock formation in the center of this lake. As they made their way, the Paragon around them bellowed, some in greeting, some in disgust at the intruder they brought. The noise was deafening and intimidating. There was no way Trattam could reach his friend now.

It seemed bizarre that so many Paragon were situated here, but in reality, it matched up perfectly with the fact that the Fire tribe hadn't seen their rivals for so long. They were definitely planning and saving their energy for another massive invasion. Trattam was sure of it.

Merylus and her cronies landed, still holding tightly onto Telufahn. The Primal quaked in sheer terror at the sight and sound of so many enemies surrounding him, and his scales looked paler than usual. After making sure that her dragons still had him secured, the Earth leader ascended to the very top of the rocks, spreading her wings wide and roaring to silence the raucous crowed. The din died down immediately. Once could have heard a pebble falling into the crater.

"My dearest dragons," Merylus began, "you know very well why we are all here. We made plans for this day long ago, crossing our claws so that luck would shine down on us and grant favorable conditions for a great and vital battle. Not only has the weather been ideal so far, but also a new development has come into play, one that has placed victory even closer to our clutches. I have here a miserable whelp from the Fire tribe who strayed into our territory, perhaps seeking to discover our plot. But following him was an even juicier catch... Everyone, look over there!"

Two hundred eyes turned to Trattam, all glistening with malice. Hisses and whispers rose around the whole circumference of the crater. What is the heir to the Fire tribe doing here? How dare he step onto our grounds! The tension in the air was so great that part of the Frost wanted to back away from the scene, but a sense of dignity and the need to be strong for both Telufahn and his tribe kept him rooted. He stared back at the Earth Paragon as steadily as he could.

Merylus held up the crystal hanging from her neck. Its purple hue was so deep that even the sunlight could not pierce its ominous depths. "The voice of the gemstones guided me to Azelus's very own son. He claimed that he was trying to get his friend here back home. My dragons, do you believe that?"

A chorus of nos sounded. Merylus smiled in satisfaction. "Of course it's too much of a coincidence," she continued. "Why would Fire tribe Paragon cross our borders on the very day we planned to strike at them? As suspicious as it is, however, they did our tribe a big favor by coming here. I am sure we can agree that Azelus would not want to see his precious son hurt."

The Earth dragons nodded. Trattam immediately caught onto Merylus's plan. She was going to use him as a bartering chip and threaten to kill him if Azelus did not surrender.

"If you think my father will bow to you, you are wrong!" he shouted. "Spill my blood if you please. The Fire tribe would still be stronger than you without me!"

"Hah!" Merylus laughed. "We'll see about that. Now that you know of our plans, though, we absolutely cannot let either of you go. Take them away!"

The Paragon holding Telufahn lifted off again, flying over the mountaintops. Two more dragons grabbed Trattam. Though he bit and scratched and lashed his tail at them, he could not escape. Even if he managed to break free of them, there was an entire hoard of Earth dragons ready to chase him down. Eventually, his stubborn rage died down, and he allowed himself to get escorted deeper into the territory. He could only hope that somehow, he, Telufahn, and his tribe would come out of this ok.

They were brought to a small, empty cave and placed under a guard's watch. Although Trattam and Telufahn were reunited now, neither talked to the other. The silence wasn't one of anger, but rather one filled with fear, anxiety, and stress. There was no telling when the Earth tribe would leave to attack the Fire tribe, as they couldn't see any of the Earth Paragon's activities from their location.

Their stomachs started growling past noon, but no one came to bring them even the most meager scrap of prey. Although Merylus could not let them die if they were to be part of her negotiations with Azelus, the hunger only added to their discomfort. To pass the time, Trattam found himself staring at the sky, watching it grow progressively cloudier as evening arrived. He figured that by night, the moon would be completely obscured, allowing the Earth dragons to invade under the cover of darkness. The clouds could also hide dragons above them. There were indeed excellent conditions for an attack today.

When the sun started to set, Telufahn finally spoke up. "Um...T-trattam?"

The Frost was lying down closer to the entrance of the cave. He wearily raised his head and plodded over to the Primal. He saw that Telufahn had cleaned the wounds his captors gave him, but there were still clear marks on his scales from their claws.

"Yes, friend?" Trattam sighed.

"I'm...I'm so s-sorry... If I hadn't, you know, tried to do...that...we wouldn't be in this situation right now. And...I'm sorry for yelling at you earlier. I d-didn't think that might hurt your feelings."

Trattam smiled reassuringly. "It's fine, Telufahn. I know you struggle with things that many dragons do not. It's only natural for you to feel that way. But what's done is done. We're stuck here until they let us out, or until we find some way to escape."

He paused crept closer to Telufahn, whispering in the Primal's ear slits. "Did you see your father in that crowd?"

"N-no... I tried to find him, but there were too many Paragon... But maybe that's a good thing. Maybe that means he's not part of the invasion..."

Some time later, the guard stationed outside the cave left and was replaced by a young male Carapace Paragon. His scales were as white as freshly fallen snow, and the splotchy markings on them were blue like the pristine waters of the crater lake. He spoke to the guard in low, even tones as they switched. Then, once the other dragon left, he glanced around warily before stepping inside the cave, heading straight up to Trattam.

"You are...the Fire tribe's heir, correct?" the Earth dragon asked. Trattam could not conceive of why this Paragon was trying to hold a conversation. Perhaps it was an attempt to siphon information out of him.

"Yes," he answered. "My name is Trattam. And you?"

"I am Ixo. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Trattam must have gazed at him in suspicion, as Ixo quickly added, "Ah, there's no need to be cautious. I am not your enemy."

"And how can I believe that?"

"You don't have to believe me, but I do hope you'll listen to me, at the very least. From the present weather conditions, I'm sure you've surmised that my tribe will attack yours at night, in virtually total darkness. That will also be the best time for you to escape."

"Escape?" Trattam grunted in surprise. Telufahn, too, blinked at Ixo in confusion. "What's in it for you if we get away? I'm afraid I cannot easily trust your intentions."

Ixo's lips tightened in what seemed to be impatience. "I understand, but I implore you to hear me out. Please, let is sit and talk."

After a second of hesitation, they all lied down facing each other, and the Fire dragons turned their full attentions to the Carapace.

"Before Merylus came into power," he began, "the Earth tribe experienced a tumultuous period where there was no leader. Normally, we would have defaulted to the offspring of the previous leaders, but none of their children survived. Since no one had a definite claim to the leadership, there was much fighting between dragons over the position, and sometimes it was so ruthless that Paragon died. There was a very realistic fear that either we would ruin ourselves, or some other tribe would take advantage of the chaos and overrun our lands completely."

"That was when Merylus found the Shining Cavern. It's a cave chock full of beautiful gemstones near the center of our territory, and oddly enough, most of the gems resembled her crystal wings in color. She's always been fairly superstitious, and when she made her discovery, she took it as a sign that she was supposed to become the next leader. No one believed her, of course, but after that, she worked hard to quell the infighting and pitched many ideas to improve the tribe. Eventually, dragons recognized her wisdom and installed her as the new leader. However..."

Ixo looked down at his feet and shook his head. "As time went on, she got more obsessed with her power, and she believed in the Shining Cavern's symbolism so strongly that she claimed to her voices from the stones telling her what to do. That was when our friendship broke off. Gems that talk? Such poppycock! She made a series of very bad decisions that she attempted to justify by saying that the Cavern told her to do it."

He glanced outside to double check that no one was eavesdropping and continued. "Although it may have looked like most of the Paragon at the crater supported her plans wholeheartedly, that couldn't be farther from the truth. Many of my fellow dragons, myself included, have lost faith in her. We are sick and tired of fighting for her, and I think this invasion she's planning against your tribe is quite pointless. In fact, I think all of these tribal feuds are. That's why I want to help you escape, even if it lands me in deep trouble. I need her to lose and realize how foolish her actions have been."

Trattam mulled over the words. "You're a very thoughtful Paragon," he said at length. "But how are we to get out?"

"Once the invasion starts, most of the Earth tribe will be gone. The dragons left behind are, for the most part, the sick, young, and elderly, so it's unlikely that you'll get caught. I'll lead you out of the territory then. The only downside is that you will probably arrive back at your tribe in the middle of the fighting."

"What if there's no fighting?" Telufahn asked. "What if Azelus surrenders to Merylus because she captured us?"

"Well," Ixo replied, "that would be moot if you escape her clutches, right? At any rate, I know your leader is a stalwart dragon. He wouldn't give in to her."

Trattam's heart warmed at Ixo's generosity and praise for his father. "Thank you," he breathed, smiling at the Carapace. "We will never forget this."

Ixo resumed his guard duties, and as night fell, the Fire dragons were filled with anticipation. They placed the entirety of their trust in this Carapace and expected to make it out alive. Unfortunately, their stomachs were still clenching with hunger. How could they run for it without any fuel to burn?
Image

The answer came in the form of a blind, elderly Sandshark Paragon with a mud colored hide and a limping gait. He appeared at the mouth of the cave with a decently sized mountain goat in his jaws. Sniffing the air, he caught the scents of the two prisoners and hobbled towards them, depositing the kill at their feet when he sensed he was close enough to them.

"You young'uns are from the Fire tribe, yes?" he asked. His voice creaked like a snapping branch. "Ixo told me about you before he came on shift. I heard he intends to get you out, but you won't go anywhere without a good meal. Eat up, boys. I sneaked this one out of the prey storage caves for you."

Telufahn's eyes gleamed as he eyed the goat. "Ohhh, thank you so much!" he cried. "I haven't had a bite of food since this morning!"

"I must thank you as well," added Trattam. "What is your name, sir?"

"My name is Hairou, and I've been walking these lands since god knows when. I've seen so many battles between the tribes come and go, and you know what? We need them to stop." Despite his frail limbs, he gave the cave floor a solid stomp. "Too many Paragon have lost their lives. If only we could all work together instead! That way, we won't be snapping each others' necks over resources. But many Paragon are too proud of their tribe identities to think of doing that. Paragon like Merylus, that stubborn girl. You need to go home and teach her a good lesson!"
