Look Out For Her (Self, Finished)

Though little light came through the roots composing her spacious den's ceiling, the young Voidbringer was roused awake by the sense of the sun slowly rising in the sky, as well as that of the pleasant breezes arriving with the new day. She sleepily rubbed her eyes, tiredness leaving her body through a yawn from her toothy maws. The world slowly came into focus as she groggily got to her feet. Her mother, a thin and lovely Pipe Paragon, was still snoozing nearby. Her father, a sturdy, silver scaled Voidbringer like herself, was already up and about, sweeping dead leaves into a pile with his tail. She didn't bother to say good morning and instinctively walked right past him, heading to the mouth of the den check the status of the sky. It was a pristine blue today, with clouds lazily drifting by.

"Hello to you too, Karin," her father greeted. "Up early again, I see."

"The wind has been too nice these days to pass up," Karin retorted, turning towards him. "You know I can't resist going out with this weather!"

The older Voidbringer chuckled and set about pushing the leaves into a corner of the den, careful not to disturb his mate as he passed. "I know, Karin, but you must remember. Your mother is expecting the egg very soon, and I want you to be here to welcome your sister- or brother- into the world. Your mother will also be very exhausted after laying it. She'll need your help. So don't wander too far away. Today might very well be a special day."

Karin rolled her eyes. Her father had given her some variation on that same exact speech every morning for the past week or so. As excited as she was for a new sibling, the egg wasn't even hatching; it was just getting laid. She didn't feel like welcoming an inanimate object when all her Wood tribe friends were waiting to play with her outside. The early morning flight had become a bit of a ritual among them, the prime time for them to all get together and have fun. She really didn't want it to be interrupted.

"I know, dad, I know," she sighed. "I'm not a hatchling anymore. You don't have to remind of things constantly." She put one foot outside of the den and stretched her crystalline wings.

"You will always be my hatchling, Karin. Go enjoy yourself, but don't forget to catch some breakfast!"

The morning sun was immensely refreshing against Karin's scales, and the lush grass underneath her feet felt like a rich, green carpet made for a king. Her nostrils picked up a faint fragrance of pine, while the songs of taiga birds rang in her ears. The Wood tribe's territory was such a wonderful place. Karin had to sigh in contentment as she made her way to the grassy plain where she and her friends always gathered. In these days, her tribe hadn't seen too much conflict, supposedly because the four other Paragon tribes were all too busy with rivalries amongst each other. As such, the Voidbringer and her fellow dragons were left to enjoy the riches of their territory without fear of invasion. It was no longer dangerous to romp and soar around, unlike how things were several years back.

A few of the older Paragon were wandering around the forest at this hour, but none of the other young dragons seemed to be up yet. Karin was the first to reach the plain and waited around for a while, staring out over the horizon. This expanse was right at the edge of the forest. It spread for several miles all around, and at its very end, opposite of the woods, loomed the great Fe'gan mountains. Few Wood dragons ever ventured near those peaks. Not only was the land more frigid and less forgiving there, but the mountains also housed the mighty Metal tribe, a clan known for their harshness in battle. The Wood tribe had never gotten into any major fights with them, but a few minor border skirmishes had occurred in the past, and each one left Karin's tribe terrified. She was quite glad that those days appeared to be over. She never wanted her homeland to be anything but tranquil and idyllic.

Soon, Karin picked up the sound of rustling behind her, and she turned around, expecting to see one of her friends walking out from the forest. To her disappointment, it was not a dragon her age, but Rhama, a purple and brown Lavamancer her parents were well acquainted with. She didn't dislike the other Paragon. In fact, she admired Rhama's fighting and hunting abilities, which no other dragon in the tribe could match. Karin simply felt like their ages were too different for them to comfortably hang out, never mind the fact that the Lavamancer couldn't join her on the morning flight due to having spikes on her back in place of wings.
Image

"Greetings, Karin," Rhama said, stepping up to the Voidbringer. "Ready to fly again?"

"Yeah, but no one else is around," Karin sighed. "I don't know what's keeping them."

Rhama settled down in the grass next to her and stretched out her limbs. "Well, you are up fairly early. The others might be sleeping in. I'm sure someone will come in time, though. For now, maybe you could show me your skills? I hear you're very good at flying."

Suddenly, Karin's curiosity piqued. "Do you ever wonder what it's like to fly?" she asked. She couldn't picture a life stuck to the earth.

"I do. I imagine that it's a beautiful sensation, and it certainly has its practical uses. But I'm still quite happy staying on the ground. Wishing for something I can never have would be painful anyway." The Lavamancer smiled, but Karin still saw a spark of longing in her gaze. "Now, go ahead and fly. I'm eager to see your moves. If you were waiting for an audience, you've got one right here."

With a sigh, Karin extended her wings and flapped them a few times experimentally, figuring that Rhama would have to do as her audience for now. Once she felt warmed up enough, she started dashing across the plains, picking up speed as she went, and then took into the air with a great push. The wind whistled shrilly as it blew through the jagged crystals on her wings. The trees and rocks below became no bigger than pebbles. Karin lifted her head towards the sun, basking in its warmth, before pulling in her wings to make a steep dive. It was time to entertain.

Despite her youth, many Wood Paragon, both young and old, regarded Karin as one of the best fliers in the tribe. She could sense slight differences in pressure, precisely angle her wings and body to get the most out of a wind, and dodge obstacles by a hair. No one had really taught her these things; they came to her quite naturally, though her mother was also pretty good at them. The young Voidbringer hoped that one day, if the tribe ever came under attack again, her skills could become an asset rather than something mostly for show. She dreamed of dazzling enemies with her moves, sending them scurrying once they saw how adept she was in the air.

Karin plunged as close as she could to the grass without crashing, then suddenly veered straight up, spinning counterclockwise. She transitioned into an elegant twist that then formed itself into a loop-de-loop. Spiraling downwards again, she could see that a few of her friends had finally arrived on the scene and were staring at her, jaws hanging open in awe. She smirked and whizzed right by them, sending a mighty burst of air into their faces.

"Go, Karin!" a tiny Rockbeak cried.

"You're amazing!" called out a rather handsome young Nago.

The praises found their way into Karin's heart and warmed her from the inside. This was what she lived for- the vast, blue freedom of the sky and the delight on her companions' faces. Soon enough, a few more dragons joined her in the air. They danced with her and tried to match her abilities, but none of them could even come close. It was all in good fun, however, and they laughed as they competed and played. So great was the morning flight's thrill that Karin almost didn't hear Rhama shouting her name about ten minutes later.

"KARIN!" the Lavamancer roared from below. "COME BACK!"

Jolted out of her euphoria, Karin scowled at the interruption and plunged down to the earth, alighting gently in front of Rhama. "What?" she asked. "What happened?" There was now a Sailfin Paragon standing next to Rhama, and the two adults had expressions of clear distress.

"You must go back to your den!" the Sailfin cried. "Sefi is laying the egg right now, and..."

"And what?" Karin spat, continuing to glower. Sefi was her mother's name. Of course the egg would have to come right in the middle of her fun!

"It's...it's not going well. Not going well at all. You must go to her side, quickly!"

Now that she heard that, her face fell. Anxiety wrapped its terrible claws around her as she darted back into the trees, racing towards home, praying that her mother would be ok.

When Karin reached the den, she found Sefi lying in the corner, shaking and breathing heavily. Her father was hunched over his mate, teeth gritted in anxiety. He was whispering soothing words to her and massaging her abdomen gently, trying to help, but it didn't seem to be working. There was a shiny layer of sweat totally covering Karin's mother, and the force of her contractions seemed unnatural.

"M-mom?" Karin stammered, sprinting up to her parents. Taking a closer look at Sefi's body, she could see that the egg was coming out, but it appeared to be stuck. The Voidbringer felt a deep dread and looked at her father in alarm. "Dad, what's going on?"

"Egg binding," the older Voidbringer hissed. "The egg is having a very hard time passing, and it's putting pressure on your mother's body. I sent some friends to find help, but they haven't come back yet. Karin, go grab something warm to cover your mother with. The heat should help the egg come out."

Karin nodded and zipped back out of the den, heart pounding from both adrenaline and fear. She knew that somewhere in the forest, the Wood tribe stored pelts of slain prey for use during colder weather. These pelts helped keep the sick, elderly, and young warm, and they were sometimes used to wrap up bundles of materials. It didn't take too long to find them. Once she chanced upon the pile, she quickly nabbed the first skin she saw, a wolf's, and raced back home with it dangling in her jaws. She laid it over her mother and stepped back, panting.

Re: Look Out For Her (Self)

In the short time she was gone, Sefi didn't seem to have gotten any better. If anything, the tremors were worse, and the poor Pipe was sweating even more profusely. When Karin went to drape the wolf pelt over her mother, she was greeted by a shocking sight. A bit of blood was beginning to seep out past the egg.

"Mom is bleeding!" she cried, backing away. Her father shook his head in frustration. Tears were beginning to roll down his face.

"I don't understand," he moaned. "Your egg was laid so easily. Why has it suddenly become so difficult?"

A few other Paragon arrived at the den, each carrying supplies intended to make the laying easier. One dragon fed Karin's mother an herb that was supposed to help the birthing muscles relax. Another came with an oily piece of fat that was rubbed over the egg as a lubricant. Rhama also came, carrying a large leaf with some water pooled in its center. The Lavamancer offered the drink to Sefi, who lapped it up swiftly.

"Is there anything else I can do, Ralkner?" Rhama asked, turning to Karin's father.

"Don't we have any healers in this tribe?" the Voidbringer rasped.

"We used to, but he passed away last winter. I don't know if there are any more Wood Paragon with healing knowledge."

Ralkner stamped his foot on the ground, sending up a little cloud of dust. "Dammit!" he snarled. The curse left his jaws so fiercely that everyone jumped and stared at him; Karin's father was not known as one to swear. "We don't have a proper leader, and we don't have a healer. What kind of tribe are we?"

"Ralkner, calm down," Rhama urged, wrapping her stinger-ended tail around his shoulders. "We can make do with the healing knowledge everyone here knows. I'm sure..."

The Lavamancer's words were cut off by a piercing cry. Heads whipped around to witness Sefi shuddering forcefully, her neck stiff, making one giant effort to force out the egg. A soft thud marked her success. There was a drop of silence, and then a burst of excitement. The gathered Paragon rushed up to greet the egg, but their joy quickly turned into horror when they saw that the egg was lying in a slowly forming pool of blood. Karin thought her heart would stop forever.

"M-mom?" she gasped, running to cradle her mother's face in her arms. Sefi looked oddly pale, and her many eyes looked sunken and lifeless.

"Look out..." the Pipe Paragon breathed faintly. "Look out for her..." Karin blinked down at her in a mixture of confusion and horror.

"W-what are you talking about?" the young Voidbringer stammered.

And those were the last words she ever heard from her mother.

In the first few weeks following Sefi's death, Ralkner plummeted into a chasm of despair. The Voidbringer seemed devoid of life, and when he wasn't busy taking turns incubating the egg with his daughter, he sulked around the den or went wandering alone in the woods. Occasionally, he had to be reminded to hunt for the two of them. When friends came to visit, he would growl and send them away. Karin found his behavior unseemly and pathetic. At the same time, she also felt depressed. The effort she had to put into caring for the egg and her father stole the time she once used to socialize, leaving her irritable on top of her grief.

Time slowly mended their pain, but the real burst of happiness came a month and a half later, on a rainy spring afternoon, while Karin sat on the nest she and her father constructed. She munched on a hawk she caught for herself out of boredom, when suddenly, there came a tiny tremor underneath her belly. Freezing in surprise, she slowly lifted herself off of the silvery egg to discover it shaking slightly. Her heart skipped a beat. Her sibling was finally coming into the world.

"Dad!" she cried. Ralkner was watching the rain at the mouth of the den, and he turned at her call.

"What is it?" he rumbled, tilting his head to the side.

"The egg! It's hatching!"

The spark that lit in Ralkner's four eyes was one that Karin hadn't seen in forever. As he got to his feet and approached the nest, she could sense a repressed, excited energy bubbling up inside him, one that had been lying dormant for much too long. When he saw the quivering egg for himself, a large smile immediately cracked his melancholic expression. His joy also made its way to Karin, who found herself grinning at him, as well as at the idea of a new mouth to feed.

"At last," Ralkner sighed happily. "The time has come. Although..."

"Although what?"

The older Voidbringer slowly frowned. "It seems a little early for the egg to be hatching. Usually it takes at least two months for a Paragon egg to hatch."

The words sent chills running over Karin's scales. She gazed at the egg nervously, wondering if her brother or sister was truly emerging prematurely. What kind of effect would that have on the hatchling? She could only hold her breath and hope that the baby would be strong enough to break out of the shell and strong enough to survive, not daring to face another tragedy just a few weeks after Sefi's passing.

After observing the egg for a while in anticipation, Karin grew nervous and asked her father how long it would take the hatchling to crack the shell. "Sometimes a whole day," he replied, an answer at which she gawked. She decided that her time was better spent doing something else than watching the slow process, and so she headed out into the forest to inform the other Paragon of the good news. Her tribemates were delighted. Many came to shower gifts of food and supplies for the family. However, they also showed confusion at the baby's early hatching, turning the twenty-four hours of waiting into an odd mix of a celebration and an ordeal. Plenty of prayers to unknown gods were whispered for the child.

During breakfast the next day, the sound of a bit of eggshell dropping to the floor sent Karin and Ralkner dashing to the nest. Not a single word was spoken as the two saw more and more cracks emerge on the gray shell. It was clear that the baby inside was making a great effort to crawl into the world. The egg kept rocking violently, and at one point, they had to keep it from rolling out of the nest entirely.

When the hatchling still hadn't emerged close to noon, Karin and her father began to really worry.

"We might have to help the baby get out," Ralkner murmured. "Do you think you can do it, Karin? Your claws are lighter and more nimble than mine."

"What am I even supposed to do?" she groaned. "What if I mess up?"

"You'll be fine. Just gently pry off little pieces of shell every so often. I'll go get some damp moss to moisten the egg. Doing those two things should work."

Re: Look Out For Her (Self)

Ralkner spun around, and before Karin could protest, his tail vanished past the den's mouth. The young Voidbringer gritted her teeth. Never in her life had she expected to be thrown into a situation like this. A large part of her was terrified that she would hurt the infant, or even worse, accidentally kill it. She realized, however, that there was also a chance of her new sibling dying if she failed to act. Taking a deep breath, she crouched down to the egg's level and started slowly working a single claw around the cracks in the shell, using her other claws to steady the fragile orb.

She jumped a bit when she wriggled her first piece of shell off, revealing silvery scales much like her own underneath. Her curiosity as to what the hatchling would look like drove her to chip away at the egg with heightened resolve. Once Ralkner came back to moisturize the egg, her task was made even easier. It eventually seemed like she was doing a better job of breaking the shell than the baby was.
Image

Finally, after what felt like forever, there came a great shudder from the hatchling, and the remainder of the egg split in half. The dragon inside revealed itself to be a tiny Pipe Paragon, a girl, with leathery wings, a spiky tail, and purple and gray markings running all over her body. The mane of tendrils on her head were a bright red, a trait inherited from Sefi.

Ralkner melted at the sight of his newborn daughter. "Oh, what a pretty girl!" he cooed, leaning over the baby. The Pipe let out a shrill chirp and blinked her eight emerald eyes at her father, weakly raising her snout to touch his. He chuckled and turned to Karin, who held her head high, quite pleased that she had successfully brought her sister into the world. "Would you like to name her, Karin? I already got the chance to name you."

"Are you sure?" Karin asked. Her question was answered with a nod. Sighing, the younger Voidbringer started to mull over names in her head. She was sure that she'd grow to adore her sister. Perhaps she ought to name the baby after another thing she loved.

"...Rafale," she ultimately decided. "A gust of wind. I don't know what kind of language it's from, but one day while I was flying, I overheard a group of human explorers in the plains saying that word. What do you think?"

"A lovely name for a lovely girl. May our dearest Rafale grow to be big and strong."

Karin quickly learned that rearing a hatchling demanded tremendous effort. Although Ralkner was Rafale's primary caretaker, Karin was forced to take up his duties whenever he was away from home. She had to watch over her sister constantly, herding the Pipe away from dangerous places and objects, and feeding the endlessly hungry hatchling required her to hunt for tiny, ridiculously agile prey. As excited as she was to have a sibling by her side, keeping up with the child often annoyed her. She wished that she still had time to go fly with her friends.

After a few weeks, it became apparent that something was wrong with Rafale. Though the hatchling exhibited bursts of energy here and there, the Pipe was sluggish for the most part and appeared to have trouble breathing after romping around. Karin brought up the subject with their father, who initially dismissed it as a hatchling's natural weakness and tendency to exhaust itself playing. But one morning, after the sunrise, Ralkner woke to find Rafale curled up in her nest with an odd, bluish tint to her scales, breathing very shallowly.

"Karin, wake up!" he whispered, prodding his elder daughter awake. The Voidbringer drowsily opened one eye and groaned as she roused from slumber.

"What do you want?" she mumbled. She was so tired that the look of terror on her father's face didn't register immediately.

"Rafale is sick. Come take a look at her."

Karin tiredly dragged herself over to her sister's nest, craning her neck to take a closer look at the child. She also noticed the bizarre hue in Rafale's scales and frowned. Pressing her ear close to the little dragon, she tried to listen for vital signs, but she could only hear faint traces of them. She backed away from the hatchling in shock.

"What's wrong with her?" she gasped. Rafale uttered a tiny cry, as if she were calling for help.

"We need to get her medical attention immediatey," Ralkner rasped. "I won't let there be another..."

He shut his jaws, not daring to finish the sentence, and instead began to storm out of the den. Karin ran after her father, wrapping her claws around his lashing tail to stop him.

"W-wait just a minute!" she hissed. "Where do you think you're going?"

"I've heard rumors of an apothecary wandering around these areas as of late. A Carapace, skilled at treating illnesses and concocting all sorts of tonics. I'm going to try to find him. You stay here and watch over your sister. See if anyone in the tribe can give her some preliminary aid."

With that, Ralkner's tail slipped out of Karin's grip. The sound of frantic wing beats rose soon after.

Karin asked around the tribe as instructed, but none of the Paragon seemed to know what to do. They kept Rafale warm, checked her temperature, and made sure she was well nourished and hydrated. They carried her outside to give her some fresh air. The dragons with the keenest of noses in the tribe sniffed at the infant, but they could not pick up any putrid scents of disease. Without knowing the origin of the ailment, they could not cure it.

During Ralkner's absence, Karin felt incredibly antsy. She took care of herself just fine, and she wasn't particularly worried about her father's safety, but Rafale was a complete headache. Her need for constant surveillance reached a point where Karin started to loathe monitoring her. It was hard to play with the Pipe on her better days, as the Voidbringer was not at all interested in batting a ball of dirt back and forth endlessly, and Rafale's inability to speak gave her headaches. She wished that her little sister could just tell her what she wanted instead of screeching constantly until Karin successfully guessed what she needed. All dreams of the perfect sibling were headed down the drain.

Finally, after what felt like the longest week ever, Ralkner returned with the apothecary. It was the middle of the night, and Karin was just about to sleep when she heard rustling and her father's hushed voice outside. Relieved at his return, she sprinted towards the den entrance, only to stop in confusion and fright when she saw what appeared to be a skull hovering in front of her.
