Clivius' bemused face quickly flashed into a startled, blurting noise of surprise as Freylan suddenly darted up and kissed him. His face seemed to rush with color from the spot where she kissed outward, and he stared at her for a long moment before a smile slowly settled on his face. "I-I love you, Freylan!" he suddenly called out, his voice echoing in the clearing as he called after her, and she was gone. He stood there for a moment, breathing fast as his heart hammered with everything that had just occurred in only a few moments, and with a bracing smile he chuckled to himself, unable to touch his own cheek with how laden down his arms were. Oh, his face was warm... but it helped with the chilly night, as he walked eastward towards the rising sun, and home. The idea of facing his father hardly scared him, now.
Or at least, he assumed so. But as he tried to sneak back into the church to drop off the soiled blanket and the soup pot, telescope still tucked under his arm, Clivius jumped to find his father... not in the sanctuary. Clivius stared around cautiously, a small frown flickering on his face, and he snuck into the kitchen and nearly ran head on into Sylvester Amentia, who caught the pot and blanket before it could fall out of Clivius' arms. Father and son stared at each other for a moment, before Sylvester's eyes slowly dragged to the telescope under Clivius' arm, then back up to Clivius' face, his expression growing a little steely behind his friendly smile.
"And where have you been this morning?" he asked in a soft, sunny tone of voice that seemed to be a default for him. He took the pot and blankets, frowning in alarm at the red stain on the blankets before he realized it was, in fact, soup, and he set the pot in the sink before fanning the blanket out to assess the damage. Clivius shifted uncomfortably, a little stunned as he maneuvered the telescope into both arms for safety's sake, and swallowed. All he could get out was a soft 'um' before Sylvester continued, "The, ah... the university wanted to ask us if we'd seen anybody with a telescope. It seems theirs was swiped last night."
Oh. Clivius felt his heart drop about three meters in his chest, clogging his throat. "A-agh..." he stammered out a noise, eyes wide with alarm as he clutched the device close, then drew in a sharp breath and let it out slowly. "I was only borrowing it," he said as calmly as he could, offering something like a serious smile at his father's back. "I wanted to look and see if I could find Ve--"
"Clivius," Sylvester's tone was soft, but full of warning, and Clivius shut up quickly, swallowing down his words. Venus. "I told you to leave that astrology business alone. It's sacrilegious," he murmured, moving the pot aside and putting the blanket into the sink instead, beginning to run cold water on it to wash out the stain. "And not your place, anyway. Leave that sort of thing to the astronomers at the university. There's a reason the telescope belongs to them, and not you."
Clivius stared at Sylvester's back, his heart thumping indignantly in his chest. "Father, I was going to return it soon--" Clivius cut off as Sylvester turned his face to stare at Clivius with amber eyes, and after a long moment they crinkled slightly at the corners.
"You'll return it now, and I'll come with you," he said firmly but gently, and he let the blanket soak in the water as he took his hands out and wiped them on his pants. He turned around to face Clivius, and he stared at him for a long moment before his eyes flickered curiously as they trained on Clivius' throat, and with a growing darkness. "And where did your necklace run off to, anyway?"
But there will come a time
You'll see, with no more tears
And love will not break your heart
But dismiss your fears
Get over your hill and see
What you find there
With grace in your heart
And flowers in your hair
"Tomorrow will be a good day."Pen | New Pen | Breed | Wish | Sales | Art | Imp. | Add-ons
