Hurry Up and Let Me Love You [solo]

Postby Silver » 05/29/2017 8:53 AM

Tara squinted into the sunlight with her hand on her head to shield her eyes, and thought to herself that she really had to get some new sunglasses. Eventually, she managed to find the path she was looking for, and she cheerfully stomped in that direction. Finally, they were on the right path again!

A puffy little bird was sitting on a nearby branch, and Tara squeaked with glee. "Look," she whispered loudly.  "It's so cuuuute!" But when she turned her head, she realized that she was more alone than she thought. With a sigh, she turned around to see Kurai lagging behind. "Oh hurry up!" she shouted, startling the bird away. "You're missing everything!"

Kurai scowled into the bright sunlight and lowered his head. Why had he allowed her to convince him to come out here, again? It was hot, there were a million bugs, he was sweaty, and the sun was somehow always in his eyes. Nature was very much not his friend, especially not today.

"Sorry," he mumbled, though he wasn't sure that he was. Wasn't it enough that he even agreed to come along? He was just about to say as much when he made eye contact with Tara. The brilliant smile on her face softened the scowl on his. All he could see was her body outlined by the sun behind her, but that was enough. It nearly brought him to smile. Nearly.

"You're supposed to be enjoying yourself," Tara said with a chuckle as Kurai caught up. The look on his face betrayed the fact that he didn't really believe her. "Don't be silly," she said warmly while reached up to brush some stray hair out of his face. "It'll be worth it, trust me."

"Wait, what?" Kurai asked, tilting his head. As far as he knew, they were just hiking for the sake of it, but what she said implied otherwise.

"Oh, you'll see," she teased. Perhaps she should not have let that little tidbit slip, but there was no putting it back now. She was just going to have to use it to motivate him. A devious smirk stretched across her face. This just got more fun after all.

"Oh come on," he whined. There was no way she was going to get away with dropping a bomb like that. Suddenly, his interest in this trip had spiked. Tara, he recalled, was excellent at surprises.

"Well if you must know, then hurry up already!"

"Fine!" he said, pushing past her and confidently stomping forward. He got a good couple of meters away before he finally turned back and realized, "So, you're probably going to have to lead the way, huh."

"Well, if you insist," she giggled and skipped past him. There was the enthusiasm she had been looking for!
Now, all she had to do was keep that attitude up until they got there. That should be easy enough. Right?

The two of them hurried along the trail and quickly found themselves under a thick overhang of trees. The cool relief from the sun was refreshing, but with the increased vegetation came increased wildlife. Including bugs. Especially bugs.

After smacking what had to be the hundredth mosquito, Kurai let out an annoyed groan. What happened next was entirely predictable - a bug flew right into his open mouth, causing him to cough and sputter. "This is stupid," he hissed in between coughs.

"Want some more spray?" Tara asked, acting blissfully unaware of his sour attitude. She also ignored the fact that he had denied the spray the first time she asked. It smelled bad, he had complained.

Kurai didn't want to admit defeat, but he also didn't want to eat any more damn flies. Eventually, he gave in. "Yes, I would like some spray," he muttered, making sure not to open his mouth too far.

"Catch!" Tara instructed, haphazardly chucking the can of bug spray behind her. Kurai had to run to catch up to it before it hit the ground. He glared at the back of her head and she acted like she didn't notice.

Kurai hastily sprayed himself and the air all around him with the bug spray. Yet again he found himself hacking and coughing, this time from the smelly fumes. "Keep your mouth shut," Tara advised.

'Heh, like you're one to talk.' Kurai barely managed to keep himself from saying that out loud. As grumpy as he was, he really did like her. Chattiness and all. "How much longer until we're there?"

"Don't know," Tara said with a shrug. Kurai thought she was just playing a joke on him, but he was wrong.
She really didn't know. In fact, she had no idea where she was going, but she wasn't about to tell him that.

Tara continued to scout ahead, looking for anything that caught her eye. While she didn't know what she was looking for, exactly, she did know that she would know it when she saw it. Now all she had to do was see it. She was relatively confident that she would find something to back up her earlier claim.

"Look!" Tara squeaked out after a long silence. Kurai tensed with the abruptness of it. He was so focused on everything going on around him that he almost forgot that she was there.

"Look, look, look," she whispered, pointing excitedly at a tree.

"Hmm?" Kurai walked over and titled his head at the tree. He didn't see anything there.

"It's a lizard!"

"Where? I don't see it." Kurai swiveled his head around trying to see what she was pointing at.

"Never mind, must have been a leaf," Tara said with a mischievous giggle. She was quite pleased to see that he was interested in their little outing at last.

Kurai let out a disgruntled sigh. Not at all a strange sound coming from him, but one he hadn't made in a shockingly long time. Tara noticed his quickly deflating attitude and decided it was time to press on. Lest she lose that little speck of enthusiasm he managed before.

"Just a little further," she promised, skipping away. Though they had been hiking for quite a while, she didn't feel tired yet. The burn in her legs actually felt kinda good. She could only hope that Kurai could keep up until they found... whatever it was she was looking for.

"My feet hurt," he whined. He absolutely did not have the right shoes for this. They were some old things she managed to find in his closet that he was sure he had never worn before.

"Everyone's feet hurt, that's the whole point!" Kurai wanted to argue that feet hurting was very much not the point of hiking, but he was sure that he'd lose that one. Might as well just shut up and deal with it, as always.

Just ahead of them, Tara could see light through the trees. A huge smile brightened her face. That was it. She knew it. "Hurry up!" she shouted for what had to be the millionth time. "This is it!" She didn't know why she was so confident that this was what she was looking for, but she could just feel it.

"I really don't think I can," Kurai grumbled. He loved his girlfriend and all, but she had way too much energy.
If she expected him to run after all this, she was crazy. Strike that. He knew she was crazy, but he still wasn't about to start running.

"Ugh! Come on." Tara ran all the way back to him, grabbed him by the elbow, and proceeded forward. Except. He didn't budge. There was no way he was going to do this any faster than he wanted to, and she knew darn well that he was more stubborn than she was.

Eventually, they made their way through the trees and into the bright light of the afternoon sun. There it was. Though they hadn't realized it, they had made their way quite far up the Tuun Mountains, and from where they stood, they could see everything for miles. The trees, the sky, the ground far below them, everything spread out into the distance until it met with the horizon. The two of them stood there awestruck for a moment. Even Kurai, tired and disgruntled, had to appreciate the view.

"Kurai," Tara said softly.

"Hmm?"

"Happy anniversary," she whispered in his ear and leaned in to kiss him. They shared a warm kiss and he smiled into her soft blue eyes. This turned out alright after all, not that he'd sign up to do it again or anything.

"Wait. It was our anniversary?"
