With temperatures rising over 143°C (289.40°F) in most areas, the only relief is during the nights when it is much cooler. All travelers are advised to keep to the local towns on the desert's outskirts and avoid traveling too far from civilization. (+3 Endurance, +2 Defense)

Kuroi
[ 1 || 1 ]

Darkness engulfed the mind, leaving no trace of thought, of color, of life. The darkness choked out all sound. It strangled any light that dare try to venture in, keeping it hidden within its powerful grip. There was nothing. It was as if this place was devoid of all life, of all sound, of all colors. And, it went on like this for what seemed to be ages. However, as time wore on, a faint sound began to make its way through the strangling darkness. It was a thumping sound, like that of a steady beating drum. It was continuous, as if persistent beyond all measure. It seemed to be drawing closer, as it grew louder and louder, until finally, the sound had become a throbbing boom within the darkness.

The darkness that had so long held the mass of fur appeared to be letting go of its hold, and in its wake came a deafening throbbing sound. The furry mass groaned at the pain of the sound, begging within himself for it to stop. But as the darkness of unconsciousness let go, his thoughts became clearer, and he was glad his begging had not been answered. The thumping sound he was hearing was his own heart; he was alive. Hurting from a massive headache, but none-the-less alive. But... why did he have such a headache..? What had happened..? And, where was he..?

Hollow eyes dared to force themselves open. "Ah!" An incredibly bright and nearly unbearable light ripped through his dark eyes, and he yelped in pain, instinctively shutting his eyes tightly. After a moment, he slowly began to open his eyes once more, allowing the light to filter in more slowly this time, until his eyes were able to open fully finally. For a moment, everything was blurry and seemed to sway and move. His eyes wavered and slugglishly looked around, waiting for the scenery to quit spinning. His paw gripped the warm earth beneath him. "It feels like sand..." As his vision cleared, he realized his judgement had been correct. Sand.

Lifting his head slowly, he felt as though his head was weighted with rocks. He groaned. Nothing was making much sense. Trying to keep his thoughts straight, Kuroi blinked once more to refocus his vision and looked around him in disbelief. All around him, in every direction, there was nothing but sand, cacti, prickly shrubs, and other desert life scattered about. No water, just sand. Miles and miles of sand. Kuroi let out a choked breath, shaking his head slightly as if to wake himself up from this dream, but it was no dream. He was in the middle of a desert. Alone.
The only thing is... "How did I get here..?"

Kuroi
[ 1 || 2 ]

It was as if the vastness of the desert itself swallowed up his choked words, the emptiness leaving not an echo or sound to be heard. Kuroi stared out into the desert, feeling so lost yet wielding a stone-cold gaze. He was alone out here. It wasn't that he wasn't used to being alone; Kuroi was quite used to it, and preferred it that way. But, it was the fact that he was alone here, in this desert, that unsettled him. Kuroi could not remember anything... The sudden thought dawned on him, and the Emowockee quickly tried to search every corner of his memories for what had happened, but he could only draw a blank. Not a single memory would return to his conscious. He could not remember where he was last, who he was with, or why he ended up here. But, someone knew... Someone had to know.

The heat of the desert seemed to burn into his black hide. Kuroi sighed, his head still throbbing. "Staying here isn't going to solve anything..." The Emowockee coughed, his throat dry and parched. Though he was of the "wockee" breed, he, for whatever reason, was not a typical wockee. Listening to music only sufficed him partially. He still needed water. Kuroi checked the MP3 player strapped to his arm, which had come to his rescue a time or two before. The battery was about half full. Kuroi sighed, eyes narrowing. He fed off music. What was to happen if the battery died before reaching civilization?

"No use thinking about that now." Kuroi shoved away the worrisome thoughts, deciding it was time to get moving. He needed to find water. Slowly, the Emowockee pushed himself to standing, swaying slightly due to the head injury he had received. The thought angered the brute, but it also disturbed him. Someone had knocked him out and left him out here, but why? Why? That question repeated itself over and over, yet Kuroi had no answer. With a slight growl, the Emowockee slowly looked around him, trying to decide which way to go. In every direction it looked the same, save for the positions of cacti and rocks. Squinting his eyes, Kuroi hoped to make out something against the horizon. Slowly, he turned once more, hoping to see anything to direct him in the right way, but could find nothing.

After a moment of indecision, Kuroi shifted his weight forward and allowed his feet to catch himself and begin to walk. He did not know where he was going, but he could only hope it would lead him somewhere with water.

Kuroi
[ 1 || 3 ]

Kuroi didn't know which was worse: the heat, or no water. Both, together, made it all the worse. There was no shade, no water, no nothing around this desert, and he wasn't born to withstand the harshness of this place. There was sand in his mouth, but Kuroi had no spit in order to get rid of it. Kuroi groaned, gritting his teeth angrily as he stopped, dipping his head down into his own shadow. The sun was directly above, shinning down with such cruelty. He hated it. He hated the heat, the sand, all of it. He hated it. Looking up once more, Kuroi could only see more sand. It was endless. An endless sea of sand. That hated sand.

With a deep sigh, Kuroi released his anger, knowing that it was only spending needed energy on something pointless. He knew the heat was agitating him, but there was no reason for him to get angry. Slowly, he began his walk again, his tail barely above the ground. Instead of focusing on the heat, Kuroi tried to search his memory once more. He thought hard, trying to recall the very last memory he could, and, finally, he was able to grasp a faint one. The Emowockee could last recall being in an ally, a familiar place he'd seen before, but could not place the name. All he could recall, however, was being there. Kuroi tried to pursue the thought further, but was unable to find anything further. "What the hell happened..?" Again, no answers. All questions and no answers. It frustrated Kuroi and, once again, he found himself becoming agitated and angry. Kuroi knew he had to stop thinking over it until he found somewhere he could stay, and water. Pushing the troubling thoughts aside, Kuroi continued on.

How long he had been walking was left to question. Out here, time appeared to be non-existent. The sun even seemed to be standing still above. Kuroi had left his thoughts behind him for the time being, focusing only on the ground before him. The heat seemed to sap energy right out of him, to the point that Kuroi was stumbling every now and again. Sometimes he felt that he wasn't even moving. The scenery around him never seemed to change. It was always the same. Just where did this desert end? As if hoping for an answer, Kuroi lifted his eyes to search the horizon ahead once more, and suddenly gasped, coming to a stop. He stared ahead for a moment, not moving or blinking. Kuroi stood in disbelief. So much so that he closed his eyes and shook his head, thinking it was all just a trick of his tired eyes. But, at opening his eyes again, Kuroi's gaze correctly fell on what appeared to be the hazy figure of rocky mountains rising against the horizon.

Kuroi
[ 1 || 4 ]

Kuroi stood for a moment, staring into the horizon as if something was just going to split the sky apart right then and there. It was almost as if he was afraid to look away for his hope to be gone. Seeing such a small change in his environment, however, was such a hopeful relief. Even if there was nothing there to help him, at least it wasn't just sand. But, it looked to be quite a distance away, if it was even real. Kuroi still couldn't fully convince himself that there was assuredly something there. He struggled for a moment with his thoughts, and finally came to the rational answer that the only thing to do was to try and go forward. If it is real, he'd get there.

Focusing on the horizon, Kuroi found new strength, and finally, a goal. With this goal, it encouraged him forward, as well as giving him something else to think about rather than how he ended up here in the first place. Glancing up to the sun as he continued his journey, Kuroi guessed that he had about four or five hours left of sunlight. It would be tough walking in the sun, but at least it was only a few more hours, and hopefully by nightfall he would come to that strange rock formation in the distance, and perhaps find some help.

Kuroi
[ 2 || 5 ]

As the day worn on, so did Kuroi's body. The dark fur was no doubt nothing but a hindrance in this landscape. He was not designed to be here, and it was evident with every step he took. Kuroi was better suited in a more urban setting, not this harsh environment. How could anything live here? Really? Aside from the cacti and stick-like shrubs, Kuroi hadn't seen any life. Perhaps it was that this place was just... desolate, and devoid of life. There were a few times that the wockee caught sight of some stray movement among the sand, but his mind would pass it off as tricks from the heat and thirst. Water... Kuroi thought of it longingly. Never before had he thought much of how he needed it to survive, but here he was at the mercy of the sun and sand, in need of water else he die. The bitter thoughts would not leave him no matter how hard Kuroi tried to fight them off with more positive ones. Even with his focus on the nearing object against the horizon, he could not detour the gnawing at the back of his mind that he could in fact die.
Kuroi shuddered.
"At least my headache is gone..."

The hours ticked by slowly, and every time Kuroi looked up, the jagged, rocky ridges became clearer and clearer. The nearer he got to them, the more energy Kuroi felt he had, and the quicker he felt himself go. Even if it was all in his head, it was mental strength that he needed to survive. He kept focused on his target, knowing that with every step it drew him closer, until he was able to see the form of it so clearly and in every detail in the disappearing sun: large rocks that had been shaped and shifted by the sands and winds, though not at all any mountains. It was just large rocks, but none-the-less, it was shelter.
As if the rocks themselves had a magnetic pull on him, Kuroi felt his legs start to carry him over the shifting sands, not realizing the dropping in temperature around him, his eyes were focused on the haven of rock; the final change in scenery that brought on a chance of hope within him.

Kuroi
[ 2 || 6 ]

The looming shadow of the huge rock formations fell over the exhausted, ebony body, and an immediate reaction of relaxing relief shuddered through Kuroi's muscles. With the red sky above him from the setting sun and the cooler sand beneath his paws, Kuroi came to an exasperated stop, shoulders hunched as his head hung low with such relief. To his surprise, even, the Emowockee smirked with pride and even happiness at the relief he felt. Kuroi even had to hold back a laugh to a light chuckle. He had made it. The thought pounded joyously in his head! He had made it! But a few moments later, Kuroi knew that he had to figure out where he had made it to, and if it was even going to help him. Slowly, he allowed himself to settle and lifted his head to gaze upon the magnificent rock formation before him.
Jagged edges, smooth walls, prickly bushes and grasses. It was a magnificent sight, both eerie and awing. But, nothing appeared to be helpful at this moment, and Kuroi could smell nor hear no water. He sighed, slightly dismayed, but still with the mindset that being here was the right place. Deciding to get a closer look before the sun completely set, Kuroi began to investigate his surroundings.

It was extremely quiet, with only the sound of a slight wind in the air. Kuroi could smell no rain among the wind. It was just a dry wind. Again, water was looking less and less likely. Stepping around the edge of the rock formation, Kuroi made his way slowly along, eyes shifting and focusing on each object in case it could be of use. He took note of a few cacti, but decided to leave them as a last resort... He wasn't sure how cactus juice could affect him.
Kuroi paused his search, turning his gaze to the darkening sky. It was turning from red to a deep purple, and already he could see at least one star in the sky. But, there was something else besides the night sky which he noticed. The temperature. Already, he could feel the coolness of the air start to settle. Closing his eyes, Kuroi took in the moment of realization to simply enjoy the cooler feeling, but a thought struck him: how cool was it going to get? Kuroi didn't know, but he did know that he needed to find shelter, just in case. He was also sure that if the wind picked up too bad, a possible dust storm could strike. Shelter must be found, just in case.
Shifting his focus again, Kuroi began to search the edges of the rock formation for any divet, hole or cave that would work well for shelter. His eyes scanned quickly, for the he was quickly losing the light of the sun. First, Kuroi came across a small crevas, but it was far too small for him to squeeze in to. He'd have to keep looking. He searched high and low, finding one out of his reach, and, another, already occupied by prickly and unfriendly cacti, but, finally, in the time of twilight, he spied a dark, shallow cave, of sorts, against the reddish rock. With a deep, exasperated sigh, Kuroi looked to the night sky, the coolness of the night causing his fur to bristle.
"Well, it'll have to do."

Kuroi
[ 2 || 7 ]

The cave itself wasn't actually a cave. It was more like a depression in the stoney wall with a ledge over it, working as a roof. The sand looked as though it had been dug out slightly. By what, Kuroi couldn't be sure, but he didn't bother himself with any thought of it. All that mattered was a place for him to rest his weary body. Having been so focused on his objective, Kuroi hadn't had time to think about how sore his body was. Not only that, it just felt... weak and weary. Rest was all he could think about now.
Stepping beneath the rocky ledge, Kuroi felt the slight depression with his paw just to be sure it wasn't some sort of sink hole. Satisfied that it would hold him, the Emowockee circled around and lowered himself onto the warm sand, curling up with his back against the smooth rock wall. His body seemed to melt against the sand. The warmth of the sand and the coolness of the air was a wonderful relief from the heat he'd endured through the day. But tired as he was, Kuroi could not find rest. He watched the purple sky turn to a deep blue as the sun faded away and the stars began to twinkle in the night sky, but sleep did not come. Aside from a few crickets chirping here and there, there was no sound but silence all around him. It felt strangely eerie despite that Kuroi was used to such settings. Perhaps it was because he was utterly alone that caused this night to be so eerie.

Sighing softly, Kuroi knew that sleep was not going to come easily despite how tired he was. Deciding to try to help fight off the loneliness, which, ironically, was something he'd always thought he'd never have to worry about, Kuroi reached for the MP3 player strapped to his forearm and pulled it off with his mouth, setting it down in front of him. He was glad whoever had dropped him off here had not taken that or his headphones from him. Nudging the player with his paw, he pressed the large "Play" button and allowed his player to play freely. The volume wasn't incredibly loud, but it was enough for Kuroi to hear it, and immediately, it seemed to satisfy and sooth him. Slowly, his body relaxed, and Kuroi rested his head on his paws, deciding to listen to the music for just a little while.
Without realizing it, sleep carried him off quickly, and Kuroi finally rested.

It'd been a long hot day. Nothing unusual about that. That's how it was every day, and to him, it was the perfect weather. He'd been designed for this kind of terrain and weather. It was perfect, just perfect. But, despite the weather being normal today, it had been a less than normal day. Well, compared to how "normal" it is around here anyway.A stranger was among these lands. Who this stranger was, how he got here, and why was he here were questions that remained unanswered, however. And, Jake Sagan didn't like not knowing.
He'd been following this stranger for quite some time now, alone. Not entirely alone, though, as his mount, Cyclone, a Blood Penticorn, was with him as always, carrying him silently along as they tracked the stranger who trekked across their lands. Jake made sure to keep Cyclone held back enough to keep the stranger in sight, but never in the sight of the stranger. He traversed these lands without a single problem. He knew them like the back of his hand, and his mount did as well. Tracking this stranger posed no difficulty at all, and neither did staying out of his sight. The stranger would never know that he was being followed.
Jake wasn't so sure what to think of this brute. He'd never seen anything like him, and it was obvious that he wasn't designed to withstand the harshness of the desert, so why was he here? The man could not find a logical answer, but he knew the only way he could possibly find one was to confront the stranger and ask him. There would be no other way, but Jake wasn't so keen on that idea...

Night had settled into the desert, spreading it's cool relief from the heat of the sun of the day. Jake sat comfortably relaxed in the saddle on his mount, Cyclone, who had dozed off. They stood atop a rocky bluff, half covered with wind-blown sand. From the bluff, Jake could see the stranger perfectly on the clear night, the dark body curled in a small cave-like structure against the rocky formations. The stranger certainly had to be asleep by now. Jake had been watching him through the night for a couple of hours. Glancing up to the sky, he could tell the moon had moved several fists over since it first showed itself. It had to have been about 4 or 5 hours past sunset now.
Jake was still troubled about the stranger, though. He was certain he'd get no answers if he asked, so he wasn't entirely sure what to do. Jake sighed, and gently patted Cyclone's neck, speaking in a gentle yet gruff voice. “Well, whut doya think, Cyclone? Should we go on down thur 'n' intraduce ourselves?” Cyclones' ears pricked back to the familiar voice of his rider and blowed through his nostrils. Jake nodded his head as if Cyclone had said something to him. “Yeah... I might better go down thur m'self. 'need you up 'ere in case sumthin' goes wiley, right?” As if satisfied with the answer, Jake swung out of the saddle, and placed the reigns over the horn, patting Cyclone's neck gently once more. “Stay near, a'ight? If I need ya, I'll whistle.
With that said, Jake began picking his way down towards the stranger, picking every step carefully, though one would not know it with the swiftness he used. He kept to the cover of the rock formations as he neared them, careful not to let his boots hit any stray rocks that had been weathered off the rock formation. His eyes constantly searched for the dark crevas that housed the stranger, until he was finally able to get a good eye on it from a hill of sand that had built up against the rock formation. He could just make out the form of the sleeping stranger, and his eyes narrowed. Jake knew nothing of this fella, and watching him wasn't giving any answers either. He figured going down now would most likely end badly, as he'd likely startle the stranger. Jake's eyes lifted to the horizon where the sun would come up. It was still several hours off. He glanced to where Cyclone stood, able to see that his mount was in resting position. Deciding to wait until sunrise before doing anything, Jake settled down against the sand, his back against the weathered rock, and waited.

Kuroi
[ 2 || 8 ]

Though the sleep was unrestful, Kuroi did find some sleep. The gnawing feeling of being alone kept tugging at the back of his mind, but he forced himself to stay asleep, refusing to give in to the paranoid feeling that someone else could be out there. Rest, however, was needed, and Kuroi did not want to sacrifice that. Every little bit of rest meant that he could go a little farther when tomorrow came. About half-way through the night, he seemed to become aware of a change in his surroundings, but Kuroi could not place it, for as tired as he was, he could not connect the pieces. So, he simply let himself fall back to sleep, and it didn't take long for his tired body to pull him under.

****

By early morning, the air was beginning to change as a deep purple began to take hold of the sky. Kuroi could feel the change in the air, knowing that sunrise was nearing. Wearily, he opened his eyes, still tired from the long night before of restlessness. Forcing himself to sleep had not rested his body. Kuroi muttered to himself as he lifted his head, looking out of the hole he rested in. The rock formations around him blocked his view for very far, so all he could see was rock and sand. Suddenly, his attention was drawn to his MP3 player, which was making no sound. Kuroi quickly went to check the batteries, but remembered he'd fallen asleep with it on and it had probably died completely. He attempted to cut it back on, but with no luck. Kuroi sighed, and put his player back under the strap around his foreleg. "So much for that..."

As if there was a response to his words, Kuroi suddenly felt something like a thud!, and his ears pricked forward in interest. He paused for a moment, listening, trying to figure out what the sound was that he heard. Suddenly, there was a loud thwump! and the rocks around him trembled, several small pebbles flying loose from the force of whatever had hit it and falling on him. With a gasp, Kuroi quickly leaped out of the hole, spinning around to try to figure out what was going on, and as he did, he came face to face with an angry, charging Chaos Staigovald! "What the-?!" With hardly any time to react, Kuroi leaped out of the way of the charging beast, only to be narrowly missed by the deadly tail swing of the wild beast. Kuroi gritted his teeth as he spun around to face the creature once more, who had also spun around with unseemingly unnatural ease. The Staigovald bellowed angrily, shaking his broad head in irritance as he advanced for the Emowockee once more. Kuroi began to back up, moving away from the brute. He wasn't sure what he'd done to him, but it was certain that this Staigovald was not happy to see Kuroi.

The lone cowboy sat with his back against the cool, rock wall, arms folded over his chest, chin resting against his chest as well, with his hat tipped down farther to block off his eyes. His legs were crossed straight out in front of him, his spurs sticking into the loose sand, as if they were trying to hold him there. Jake had fallen asleep in his waiting. He was used to odd hours of sleeping. More often than not, the outlaw would spend a few hours sleeping off and on throughout a night, moving on with every few hours so as not to stay in one place. It was through this method of sleeping that had caused him to be extremely alert, even when he was sleeping. Jake could run off very little sleep easily, even if it wasn't restful.

The sound of a sudden thud alerted the sleeping man almost instantly. Lifting his head quickly, the man sprang to life, crawling up the sand dune to look over to where the stranger had been at. With the rising sun against his back, it started to cast it's warm light, also revealing a confrontation in this early morning. Jake looked upon a mighty Staigovald attacking the stranger. Tilting his head, Jake thought, “That's unusual... Ne'er seen them around these parts b'fore.” Jake watched as the Staigovald swung wildly at the stranger, but missed, thus allowing the stranger to be alive for a little longer. With keen eyes, the man observed the Staigovald, coming to the conclusion that the critter was lost and disoriented, and probably only reacted out of fear against the stranger. The animal was only looking for a way out of the desert.

As his eyes returned to the stranger, Jake noticed that he was backing away, and wouldn't have much farther to back before he was cornered. For a moment, the man did nothing, debating with himself over what to do. But, after a moment, he reluctantly sighed and shifted his way down the sandy bank, half sliding, half crawling. He'd have to think quick, and he was certainly good at that.
At the base of the sand dune, Jake stood up, the cover of the dune still hiding him from view of the others. He glanced up to scan the area for Cyclone. Sure enough, his eyes came across him. The stallion had moved nearer, moving to what would shade out the sun; another rock formation. Jake nodded his head in satisfaction. Then, he called on his unique ability. With one deep breath, Jake's body began to change. His skin became scaly, and his bones began to shift. Muscle built, and finger nails formed to claws. Where once a man stood, now stood a might DesertHorn Paragon.
A low growl rose in the Paragon's throat as he shook his head, stretching out his muscles as he adjusted to the body once more. His wings instinctively stretched as well, and then folded neatly against his body. Within a moment, Jake was ready. He glanced to the sun as it began to show itself over the horizon, and his eyes narrowed. He was about to make his entrance.

Turning to the dune, the mighty beast crouched low, and with a swish of his spiked tail, leaped up the dune in two powerful bounds, spread his wings and leaped into the sky. With what seemed to be unimaginable grace for such a large creature, he landed with a heavy, earth-shaking thud! between the stranger and the Staigovald, glaring down at the territorial critter. And with one deep breath, the Paragon opened his gaping maw and released a terrifying roar, tail swaying, ready to defend himself.

Kuroi
[ 2 || 9 ]

As Kuroi backed away from the agitated monster, he couldn't help but have thoughts reeling through his head as to what he'd done to tick this beast off. There seemed to be no logical answer that Kuroi could think of, but for whatever reason, here the Staigovald was, advancing on him with what seemed to be sheer intent to kill, or at least seriously injure him. Kuroi felt helpless, though the determination on his features would not be wavered. As he continued to back away from the advancing brute, who was waving it's axed tail as it moved sideways towards the Emowockee, Kuroi growled in defiance, muttering, "Way to pick on someone not your own size..."

As if a direct response to his muttering, a massive form dropped from what appeared to be out of no where and landed with an earth-shaking thud! between Kuroi and the Chaos Staigovald. Kuroi gasped as he looked up the back of some mighty dragon that had come between him and Staigovald!
The Staigovald was taken by surprise by the massive Paragon, and as the Paragon let out a deafening roar, the wild Staigovald bellowed in return, waving it's deadly tail as a warning to the beast. Only, this time, the Staigovald was slowly starting to inch away, bellowing in a threatening manner as it did so. But, he wasn't trying to escape just yet. He was merely sizing up his new opponent.

Kuroi felt frozen in place as he watched, clearly in awe over the two massive beasts that were about to go claw to claw with each other...
Suddenly, the Staigovald charged! He did a sort of leap and landed on his front legs, spinning his hind legs around, without his back legs ever touching the ground, and allowing the centrifugal force of his tail and back legs to swing the back part of his body around his front legs, aiming to smash into the mighty Paragon.

Jake had not been fighting for some time, especially with a large creature such as the one he faced now, but he could not easily be intimidated. For now, he kept his focus only on the Staigovald. The stranger would have to fend for himself for right now. Jake knew that if he got distracted for even a moment, it could end fatally. He eyed the swinging ax on the end of the brutes tail, eyes narrowing. One hit from that and it would leave a serious wound. The Paragon shifter raised a brow, an interested and slightly mischievous glint in his eyes. “This is gonna be fun...
The Staigovald sprang to life, charging for the Paragon. Jake stood his ground, crouching low as the creature advanced. His red eyes stayed locked onto the Staigovald, watching his every move intently, reading every move. As the Staigovald leaped into his attack, a half-smile flashed over Jakes' features and he quickly ducked his head and body beneath the aim of the axed-tail of the beast, his chest flattening against the warm sand. He felt the rush of the wind from the Staigovalds tail as it flew over his head, just a few inches from slicing through his wings. Once the attack was through, a strange noise came from the Paragon. It was a deep rumbling in his chest, and as the beast stood up, it became clearer. Jake was chuckling. “Missed. My turn.
With a sudden roar, Jake lunged forward at the Staigovald, claws slashing for the beast, slicing across the ground right at the Staigovald's feet. Shaking his head threateningly, the scutes along the back of his neck rattled and shook against one another, making a bone-on-bone-like sound, as the beast hissed along with his music. Jake stood his ground with his red eyes locked onto the Stagiovalds' own eyes. “C'mon... Give me a reason...

Cyclone stood in the shade of a rock formation, a few hundred yards away from all of the commotion. Ears pricked forward, listening to the sound of the fight. Nostrils flared as his body tensed, knowing something was wrong, but Cyclone's connection with his rider told him to stay put until he heard that distinct sound that would call him on.

Kuroi
[ 3 || 10 ]

The Staigovald swung through with his attack, but missed, landing swiftly back down on his back feet and positioning himself for another attack. He held his body sideways once more, bellowing threateningly at the beast, tail swaying as he prepared for another attack.
Kuroi watched from behind, eyes wide in disbelief. His eyes would not be removed from the Paragon who had stepped in to this fight. Kuroi wasn't sure what his reasons were, but he couldn't help but feel grateful that he had. The Paragon was clearly not afraid and did not seem to feel threatened by the Staigovald. In fact, it was proven when Kuroi's ears pricked to a strange rumbling sound as the beast rose to his full height. Kuroi tilted his head, realizing that the Paragon was chuckling. Chuckling? Kuroi didn't quite understand. He watched as the Paragon then changed into a clearly threatening posture, rattling the scutes along his neck, causing a bone-chilling sound to come from them. Kuroi had never seen anything like it. But, he took note that the Paragon wasn't attacking... Or, he didn't appear to be attacking. Only displaying threat. Again, more questions filled Kuroi's head, but all he could do now was watch.

The Staigovald looked nervously up at the beast as it made the strange rattling noises. He continued to sway his tail in warning, and bellowed to try to cover up the uncertainty the brute felt. The noise confused him and made him nervous, and because of this, the Staigovald swung at the beasts head once again, returning quickly to his defensive position. The Staigovald faltered for a moment, taking half a step backwards away from the Paragon in hesitation, but it appeared the Staigovald found a new bravery. With a powerful bellow, the brute burst into a charge for the Paragon, holding his head low and aiming to charge into the belly of the beast.
Instinctively, Kuroi couldn't help but call out, "Look out!"

human form || paragon form

As a Paragon, Jake took more easily to the natural world. He had a deep respect for nature within him already, but being in this form drew him even closer to nature. All of his senses were heightened and the experience was far different than being as a human. And it was through this that his defensive posture easily took over. He could read the movements of the Staigovald, seeing what he was saying without even having to hear a word from the Staigovald. With the Staigovald's hesitating movements, Jake knew that he was uncertain of attack, which told him that the Staigovald was not out looking for a fight. He'd just been startled.
Despite his accurate readings, Jake knew that the Staigovald - in his fearful state - would most certainly still be dangerous. It was obvious that the Staigovald didn't just want to turn and run. That was proven as the beast swung it's tail once more at the Paragon's head, but Jake snatched his head back out of range of the deadly tail, hissing with threat. Jake, however, kept his cool, keeping his eyes locked onto the beast, while continuing his threatening display in hopes of running off the creature, and he thought he had done just that as the Staigovald took a half a step back. His thoughts were wrong.
Look out!” With the warning from the stranger behind him being drowned out by the thundering charging of the Staigovald straight for Jake. Jake roared in surprise, rearing back on his hind legs with very little time to react. He thought quickly, acting almost as quick as he could think. As the Staigovald came up to him, Jake leaped back on his hind legs out of the way, using his forearms to push the beast off balance, though quite a hard push, as well as pushing Jake away from the charging beast. He had to dodge his head away from the swinging tail of the beast. “That was a li'l close...l
Cyclone stood tensely, listening to the battle he could not see. The Penticorn felt nervous every time Jake went off on his own. Ears pricked nervously back and forth, constantly waiting for that signal that he was needed. For now, that was all Cyclone could do for now.

Kuroi
[ 3 || 11 ]

Kuroi watched with absolute intensity, afraid that the Paragon was going to be pummeled by the rogue beast. He gripped the sand with his claws, eyes intensely locked onto the battle, nearly prepared to leap in there himself! But, suddenly, the massive Paragon reared back and used his front paws to push off of the raging beast, pushing himself away as well as pushing away the monster. Kuroi could have cheered, but the joyous moment was quickly lost.
The Staigovald bellowed in surprise as his charge missed, and felt a massive weight thrust him away from the Paragon beast, causing him to stagger and stumble straight for the rock wall that Kuroi was pressed against. The Staigovald's eyes welled with fear as he stumbled over himself, unable to regain his footing in the sliding sand. The creature bellowed once more as it managed to turn it's body slightly, but the force at which he'd been pushed still caused him to start toppling over, coming straight for Kuroi.
Kuroi looked up at the massive beast that was about to crush him, his eyes wide. He tried to think of a way out, but there simply was no time to think. With nothing but an instinctive reaction, Kuroi leaped upwards as the beast came down, grasping onto one of the monster's back spines with his paws and swinging himself up and over the creature just as it came down with a heavy thud! against the rock wall. Kuroi landed - not so very gracefully - face down in the sand, tumbling over himself into a sitting position. He sat for a moment, quite dazed.
The Staigovald groaned as it lay, smashed against the side of the rock wall, his body seeming to crumple into a heap on the sand, it's tail jerking from one side to the other with the idea of a threat still around.
