With temperatures rising over 143°C (289.40°F) in most areas, the only relief is during the nights when it is much cooler. All travelers are advised to keep to the local towns on the desert's outskirts and avoid traveling too far from civilization. (+3 Endurance, +2 Defense)

Return to Wilt'no Desert

:.:Prove to Me Your Will to Live:.:

Albie and demi-goddess alike would fade back in to the realm together almost completely across the continent on the other side, right in the middle of the Wilt'no Desert. With temperatures that could skyrocket past the 200s, Wilt'no was a place where few creatures survived. Those that did were typically small and came out of their shelters during the salvation of the night. Zears was not given that though, as it was mid day and the sun was high in the sky. For miles around them there was nothing but sand and maybe the occasional cactus or two that provided no shade protection.

So then, what was her purpose in bringing him here without and sort of warning? Selkat'aris still spoke not a single word to him as she began walking away, turning back to glance at him after she had moved a few feet away. If he truly had a strong will to survive, he would be able to either survive the rest of the day here in the desert or he would be able to find his way back to one of the small towns on the outskirts of the desert. She would provide no help, though she would keep an eye on him. If he seemed as though he were truly about to die and could not go on any longer, she would step in, take him back to safety, and heal him. The only way she would grant him any sort of power though would be if he could show her he was worth her time and effort, which she hoped he would.

She stayed for the time being, as if waiting for him to ask any questions he might have. Hopefully he would have the sense to ask yes or no question though, if he truly wanted any sort of answer that he would be able to understand.

Zears, though he had met demi-goddesses before during the war, had been surprised anyways when Selkat'aris heeded his call. He knew she would not harm him, but he couldn't help feeling slightly panicked when she transported him and herself to the Wilt'no Desert. He looked around with wide eyes, taking in his new surroundings. It was hot, dreadfully hot, with little shade in sight, and a wind picked up grains of sand and blew them against him, getting into his eyes and fur. He had trained here during the war, so he had some idea of how harsh the Wilt'no could be, but it was a challenge even for the toughest of creatures.

He was so startled by the sudden change in location that he didn't immediately notice Selkat'aris moving away. When he did, Zears let out an "ah!" and followed. There was no need to run; the sand made running hard, and he didn't think the demi-goddess would totally abandon him as of the moment. He stopped beside the goddess and looked up into her eyes. "Ah, Selkat'aris...is this...a test? What...what should I do?" The Albie felt strange talking to this divine being. He still couldn't quite believe he was here in the desert with her.

Her paw came down from her final step as she fully turned to look at Zears once again. Selkat'aris's back end lowered to the sand below, tail curling to the side. Soon after, the rest of her body followed so that she was now laying in the sands, the likes of which seemed to calm down slightly in the area directly around her. Amber eyes fell upon the albie and the dragon gave a soft smile before a nod followed soon after it. The nod was the only answer she could give to him, telling him that it indeed was a test. He could theorize on the type of test and ask her more with yes or no questions or anything of the like, but her responses were limited to a nod or shake of her head.

With the sun beating down on them, Zears would have to be quick about his questions. He hadn't been provided with any sort of water source or shade with which to cover himself. Temperatures would continue to rise for a while before any relief from the night would be provided. Surely he would wish to leave the desert as quickly as possible - before he became dehydrated.

Zears watched as the goddess lowered herself to the sand. So yes, this was a test. But it seemed that Selkat'aris could not tell him what exactly to do. The Albie sat down across from her and frowned as he pondered what sort of test this might be. "Do...I need to find something?" he asked her, blinking his bright blue eyes. That certainly would be a challenge, as the desert was vast and dangerous. Or perhaps... He turned his gaze up to the sun momentarily- not looking into it directly, of course- and took note of the heat and the emptiness of their surroundings. "Or, erm, am I supposed to...survive?" Both seemed like fair tests, and Zears waited for the goddess's response.

He didn't seem to understand.... Her face twisted in to a frown after hearing his first question, the likes of which she followed up with by a shake of her head. Selkat'aris did understand though that understanding someone unable to speak was sometimes quite difficult, especially if they couldn't just write it down for you either. Her eyes seemed to light up though as his second question began to form. Yes! That was exactly it. So he was able to understand her after all. Well, that was certainly going to be one point in his favor. Sort of as if understanding was half the challenge itself. Her frown curled back in to a smile quickly and the dragoness gave a nod to the Albie this time.

Hmm, so the test did not involve searching for something. But Zears let out a little "oh!" when the goddess smiled and nodded at his second question. All right, so survival it was. He was interested in knowing how long he had to do so, though. That would be useful in planning a strategy. "How long?" he asked Selkat'aris. "A day...?" He anxiously shifted around in the sand. While Zears had been to the desert before, he had not come here enough to clearly remember where he could find water or towns. Besides, the Wilt'no was huge, and he probably only ever visited very small portion of it. He doubted he was in any familiar place right now, in fact...

With the Albie seeming to finally understand the task ahead of him, Selkat'aris slowly rose to her feet. Her eyes drew to the sun, though not looking directly at it as the radiance was probably too bright even for a demi-goddess such as herself. This was shortly followed by her eyes drawing back to him and giving a small nod. It was almost as if she were checking the sky for how long he'd have to be out here. It seemed as though he now knew what all he needed to do - simply survive the rest of the day out in the Wilt'no Desert. She turned away from him now, starting to walk off in to the distance. With each step she took her form began to fade more until it disappeared from sight not far from where she left him. She would still be keeping an eye on him though, just not by his side the entire journey. Would he be the first in a long time to prove to her he had what it takes to be blessed by the gods?

Zears rose when Selkat'aris did and gazed up at the sky with her. It was terribly bright, and he had to shield his eyes. When he looked back down, he saw the demi-goddess walking away. "Ah!" he exclaimed in surprise. But he made no effort to follow her. He supposed that this meant his test would begin now, and he watched as she faded from sight, as if she were a mirage caused by the heat.

The Albie took a quick survey of his surroundings. There was lots of sand, no water, and some sparse patches of desert grasses here and there. The first thing he'd have to do was to find water, and hopefully shade. After all, no one would survive long in a desert without either. Zears wanted to conserve energy, so he didn't try to climb any really tall sand dunes yet, and instead he crossed over the flattest areas of sand he could access. He arbitrarily picked a direction to go because he had no idea where he was, and he prayed that he'd run into something useful.

It was certainly the typical scene in the Wilt'no Desert. As far as the eye could see there was sand and then more sand. Maybe a cactus here or there, possibly a shrub or two. There were some creatures out and about, but most of them were out of sight under the sand where there was some degree of protection from the relentless sun. The direction that Zears took seemed to provide a creature the size as himself with little to nothing he could use as protection. He did seemed to come by a relatively large, for being so deep in the desert, patch of prickly pear cacti though, the likes of which were blooming. Even the fruit of the prickly pear is covered in small thorns, but not as bad as the plant itself. If one was truly hurting for water, maybe one or two of these would quench thirst.

Zears didn't find much, but he supposed that was to be expected. People didn't call the desert dangerous for nothing, after all. However, he was surprised when he saw a large prickly pear in the distance. He walked up to it and examined it, frowning. He knew cacti were good water sources in emergencies, but he had no idea how he could dethorn the thing. Albies, unfortunately, didn't have very good claws for cutting, only gripping. Maybe if he found a sharp enough stone, he could dig the thorns out.

Since he wasn't too hungry at the moment, Zears decided that looking for such a stone would be a good next step, as well as continuing to seek shelter and a less prickly source of water. He wasn't sure if he'd see any more cacti on the way, but a sharp stone could have several uses, not just dethorning. So he passed the cactus for now, trekking to the top of a smallish sand dune. Hopefully he could navigate back to this cactus later, given more landmarks, but he didn't count on it.

Not only did deserts typically lack available water sources, but usually there tended to not be much other than sand. That meant that rocks, especially sharp ones, were not something one would typically find in the desert. With all the sand in the area any rocks would be quickly sanded down to smooth pebbles, and that was only if such stones even existed. Sure the desert dwelling natives had found sources of stone for making building in the distant past, but it didn't appear as though there were any tombs nearby. If he were able to by some chance happen upon a tomb though he'd be able to find the stone he was looking for - even if not sharp - as well as a decent place to hide from the sun if he was willing to venture inside. He'd probably also be able to break stones found there if he was strong enough. Still, for the time being it seemed as though there was nothing to give the poor creature a break from the relentless sun sucking out the liquids from his body.

Zears couldn't see anything from the top of the dune, but then again, it wasn't a very tall one either. He sighed and walked down its side. Maybe he'd have to find a higher spot to look around from now. He located a nearby, taller dune and trekked up that. It was a little hard since the shifting sands kept sliding around under his feet, and as he moved, some sand got into his eyes and nose, irritating them. He tried to ignore the sensation as best as he could and gradually managed to shuffle up to the top. What could he find from here...?

Ahead, quite a long ways off in the distance, Zears could probably see what faintly looked like a building of some sort. Or well, the top of the building. It was hard to tell from the distance, but it was quite possible that the building had been covered up after thousands of years on the desert. At the very least it appeared to be some sort of building and would probably be worth his while to check out. The sands around him also seemed to be shifting in abnormal ways. Some of the sand did in fact start to slide from underneath his paws, flowing down the dune. The most peculiar sight though was when some of the sand rose up a few inches as if something was trailing through the sand below him.

At first Zears thought it was a trick of the light, but he did see some kind of structure in the distance. Most of it seemed to be sunken into the sand. He guessed that it was worth a visit, however, since there wasn't much else to do now. He had hardly took a step down the dune when he noticed the sand moving away from his feet. Blinking in surprise, he peered at the sand, which he was really sure had risen into a small lump. Was there a creature moving around in there? The Albie cautiously made his way down the slope, moving towards the building while keeping an eye on the sand. He hoped that a monster wasn't going to come out and attack him. He was a fighter, but survival in the desert would require much energy...

The sands below him continued to shift until they seemed to be falling in a circular pattern, as if the sand was draining somewhere down below. It would be hard for Zears to keep his footings, and if he fell down the hole there was no telling where he might be taken and what dangers he might face. These sink holes were starting to slowly appear in various places around him as well, though they seemed to be starting on a much larger scale.

In the distance there was also the rising sand to be concerned about, which seemed to occur more often now as well. Once or twice he could probably catch the sight of the spines of some creature protruding from the sands. Were he able to get away from the sinking sands, it seemed as though something else had its sights on him as well.

Meanwhile, Selkat'aris had returned to the desert after her attention had been recalled to the shrine, this time with a Serraptor at her side. She looked around first, making sure that she had taken him to the planned place. The air was much cooler in here, though it smelled musky, like there hadn't been fresh air in some time. It was also hard to see anything, suggesting that perhaps they were somewhere within a building.
