With temperatures rising over 143°C (289.40°F) in most areas, the only relief is during the nights when it is much cooler. All travelers are advised to keep to the local towns on the desert's outskirts and avoid traveling too far from civilization. (+3 Endurance, +2 Defense)

[Exploration] No Place For No Better Man [L, V]

A sharp inhale rattled in the back of his throat before shooting air and sand down into his lungs, instantly creating a cough. Quickly he became aware that everything ached from head to toe; it felt like he had been left at the mercy of tidal waves for hours. His muscles screamed out for any sense of relief and a sharp pain rose in his stomach that told him he hadn't eaten in days at the very least. He felt hot, then cold--a rhythmic back and forth that felt like torture. His coughing quieted down and his red eyes slid open.

It was dark all around him...save for the stars, waning moon, and eye shine of a particularly large reptile hovering over him. Each breath washed a blast of hot air over him as steam billowed from her nostrils. He tried to leap away as his weary mind became aware enough to register the fear he should be feeling but he moved nowhere. Only groaned.

The beast made no move to better apprehend him, simply sat and stared at her quarry like a cat sitting on a mouses tail while watching it scramble in vain. He inhaled a little more sharply, intent on screaming but instead only a pained squeak came out.

"Save your strength, di'kut," a voice called from the darkness.

The hair on the back of Silas' neck stood instantly and his eyes began wheeling around in his head until he caught a glimpse of the speaker. She was in her full garb again, only the mask had been loosely pulled down from what he could make out.

"You've been in a coma for nearly a week, I was starting to give up hope on you."
"I have been hidden, scorned, adored, worshiped, forsaken, coveted and banished more times than I care to count. But the one thing all those experiences cannot steal from me is the gentle soul I was born with, the kind heart I have molded, and the bright ideals for the future that have lit my way through the darkness of the past."

"C--c---c--com---?" the man tried weakly, finding himself too parched to successfully get the question out. His throat was on fire and dry, his head felt like the giant lizard before him was sitting on it. He closed his eyes again--if the crazy Tusken hadn't dispatched him already then he felt slightly more secure that she wasn't going to do it now.

"Yeah, coma. Or sun sleep, whatever your people prefer to call it." Tracyn made no move towards him, instead stoked the small fire she had gotten started on the sands. Beside her were several pieces of cacti, their needles gleaming in the firelight. "Been trailing you ever since dropping you off in the desert. You almost made it back to civilization, that's the sad part. But the sun and heat were a bit more determined than a man without food and water for the last five days."

Silas slid an eye back open wearily, looking towards the woman and her needle covered treats. "F--f--finish.....ing.....m-me?" he barely croaked out. The huge reptile leaned down her head as he moved a hand in an attempt to gesture at the cacti, pressing her nose to his hand to stop him from moving further. The woman merely chuckled.

"Yeah, I'm so sadistic I've been forcing food and liquid into you for almost an entire week just to torture you back to death," she scoffed, plucking a piece of cactus from the sand to hold it near the fire. The fine thorns shriveled in the heat, allowing the woman to hold it in her hand without pain. Silas flickered his gaze from her to the lizard and back, unsure whether to believe the seemingly nurturing nature both were choosing to show or not.

"We're really not so different, you know. I wasn't always a member of this tribe but they saw promise in me. I'm seeing promise in you when they fail to...but you're going to have to help me prove it."

The man coughed out a laugh before curling up only slightly in pain. The woman regarded him coldly as she approached with her thorn-less piece of cactus. She punctured a hole in the side with a concealed blade at her wrist and leaned down. "I can put you right back where we found you, or maybe this time I'll just let Drali chew on you like the rawhide you are," she remarked darkly as she took hold of the back of his head and made him move to a more reclined position. Drali took the cue and slid one of her paws behind the man's head to support him.

"You tell me, what other options do you really have? You've been gone for half a cycle already, a full one by the time you're strong enough to make it back to where you call home. What do you think you're going to find? A ransacked abode? A woman who's forgotten you? Contacts who've moved onto other raiders more reliable?"

The man thought for a moment, willing his foggy mind to get the gears turning. What she was saying wasn't wrong--the streets were cruel and unguarded property was fair game. He'd have a few connections happy to see his return, but he'd have no possessions and if this crazy Tusken chose to just ship him out into the desert to find his own way...

He gave a pained nod of understanding, trying to work up the strength to speak. "P--p---rice?" was what he finally managed. The lizard supporting his head looked down at him, suspiciously. He'd tried to kill her Bond once, why wouldn't he again? She still didn't understand why her human wanted to help this lone one...he was too dumb to even forge a bond out here! She snorted as he wriggled to try and get comfortable, maneuvering her own claws so that she juggled the man into a more suitable position. Humans were so odd.

"The price? That's the easy part...I want you to help me chase down a creature and claim the bounty for it. The tribe is getting ready to migrate, we could use money for the extra provisions--and that's my main job. You prove you're just as useful and you'll have a home and a lifetime of protection."

But the one thing all those experiences cannot steal from me is the gentle soul I was born with, the kind heart I have molded, and the bright ideals for the future that have lit my way through the darkness of the past."
