With temperatures rising over 143°C (289.40°F) in most areas, the only relief is during the nights when it is much cooler. All travelers are advised to keep to the local towns on the desert's outskirts and avoid traveling too far from civilization. (+3 Endurance, +2 Defense)

When the girl had first come onto the main platform, she had decided the best place to travel would have been the park. Due to her lack of directions, she ran down to closest bridge she could find. It would be better than standing in such a hostile and fast paced location, she had been sure of it. Then, reaching the desert, she did not think she had gone down the wrong way. No, it had to just be a very hot day, and she was in a sand box. She had been positive of this as she trudged out, away from the bridge.

Then again, only fools were positive.

Chi didn't mind the heat even remotely. He didn't even feel a little hot, which probably came with being on fire. Fire was hotter that even deserts, seeing as it was a giant ball of it which made it so hot. Not that he bothered to think about it. He was hungry.

The thing, as it normally did, did not move about the cage, panicked. It did not try to counsel against such foolish thoughts that the desert was a sandbox. It didn't even know what any of those things even were. All it had done was halt its' drooling, so it could last longer. It was too hot to sit in its' own drool.

The only reason the girl had managed to not die was due to the sun setting mere minutes after she had entered. That, and because she hadn't wandered into the hotter places of the desert before then. And if she died, both pets probably would suffer a similar fate, though for Chi it would be starvation. As the air continued to cool and the dunes darkened, she had to admit it wasn't the park. The park should of had trees, and grass. This place was sand. Really, there was nothing there but sand. She held off admitting it was a desert for some reason.

Though he had been unable to feel the heat, the cooling air fazed him. Chi was not enjoying this change in temperature. Sure, it wasn't hurting him. But he was tired now, along with hungry. The cold was just another discomfort he was facing.

The thing was much more active now. While that wasn't saying much, now only the tiniest bit of saliva tricked down from the side of his mouth. His eyes focused, even if there wasn't much to see. He could get free now, under the cover of the dark. Well, maybe his thoughts weren't as complex as that, but it was the general idea.

"Ah wish ah could let ya'll out. But I dun thin' I'm supposed tah. Jus' wai' while I find where we gotta go."
"Chirp?"
"Ah will."

If it had still be hot, the girl might have been suspected of heatstroke, with her useless chatter. Neither of the two creatures could really understand how big of a mess she had gotten into anyways. That was probably for the best. Ignorance was bliss, right? She paused at this thought, not delving into deeper meanings. Was there a saying for everything?

He wanted worms. Nice, plump ones, that didn't stick in his throat. But it really didn't seem like there were any worms around. And he had seen glowing eyes just off to his side. Perhaps he knew it was the thing from before, in the cage.

The Nemuwit was about as intelligent a an infant. Just like the Matches who quietly smoldered in his cage. Perhaps this was good thing. After all, it repeated the same action every time, trying to slip through the bars. It hadn't worked before, so it had to work when it tried again, right?

Walking in what she had thought as the opposite direction ended with her on top of another dune. Apparently, the constant shifting of the sands made foot prints disappear. Which explained why the giant place of sand was so deadly. Well, that and the impossibly high temperatures. Well, she just had to hope it might be a long night. Maybe find an oasis to hole up at until someone managed to find her.

The urge to sleep practically had overwhelmed Chi the instant the light was gone. Darkness meant it was time to sleep. But with predators abounding, he wanted to feel safe. Failing that, he rocking motion of his swing put him to sleep. He just had to sleep.

The cage bars weren't moving for it. It tilted it's head to the side, as in deep thought. And, for only a second, the drooling monstrosity looked similar to what it had originally come from. Meaning it was cute. Then it returned to its' former actions. Eventually the bars would move, it was sure of it.

She had never seen an oasis. She had always heard that they were really pretty. Excellent places to relax. And the only place life might exist so obviously. And when she found one, for she was sure and not positive, her two little critters could run about. Or fly about, if Chi really wanted to stretch his wings out. The cage was barely large enough to do that.

Chi's beak was tucked into his chest as he slept. A serene picture he was, with even his flames calm and lazy. As he breathed on the dry desert air, one had to wonder if such a thing could possibly be capable of evil. Or any wrong-doing what so ever. He was truly kinder than the thing.

It had no plans for freedom. What freedom, but some abstract thought? Does a baby wonder about freedom when it sets its' mind to something? No, so the critter had no idea of what to do when escaped. Only that it had to.

As most desert travelers might warn you, even the night may be deadly. The temperature drops to almost a freezing degree, as there is practically nothing but sand. The girl who had come knew nothing of this. Instead, she continued along, fairly excited. She might have been whistling or skipping, if not for the two cages.

She had guessed Chi asleep. Didn't most birds go to sleep in the dark? Other than the few night-time versions. It would had been nice for him to sing a little tune, but nothing like that seemed to be happening any time soon. Besides, she didn't want to wake him up.

The other thing obviously wanted out of the age, but she was afraid it might get lost. And for such a small creature, it would be a shame. She could let it out at the first oasis found, if it seemed to not wish to hurt her or Chi. And then she might decide on a name. It certainly deserved a name, if it was out with her. The only question was as to figure out a good one.

Seeing what looked like some twisted shadow, or a person in pain, the girl rushed over to it. Maybe the person needed some help? Then she would want to help. But upon reaching it, the figure revealed itself to be a tree. A skinny, warped little tree.

The thing didn't look like it could support Chi. The Matches that she planned to carry on her shoulder. And she didn't want to break off any of the meager branches. The tree probably had a hard enough time surviving out here. She didn't want to be responsible for killing it.

The thing gave up its' assault. The metal didn't even feel bent. Maybe there could be a weaker spot? It began to test the other parts. And found the door which was possible to snap off.

So what, was this an oasis? There didn't seen to be much other than the single, dying tree. Weren't those things supposed to have water and plants? But it wasn't her choice what an oasis looked like. You were supposed to be lucky just to find one at all.

Chi woke after the movements of his cage. He gazed sleepily at the tree, wondering why it was there. However, upon thinking it wasn't a tree at all, he became wide awake. It was another evil thing, out to get him! Just like the eyes, the two differently colored eyes he had seen.

It found the little door. Which would have been simple to open if it had thumbs. Or even if it had recognized it was a door. Instead, it tried ramming it once more. It was a good thing it couldn't get up too much momentum.

Her critters were going to need water. She was feeling a tad parched herself. But the tree's source seemed to be hidden very well. She wondered if she should leave the poor tree and just keep searching. But she finally was getting a small break.

The monsters had come to get him! He was going to be served for dinner, or used as a toy. A toy to be destroyed. He wanted to escape so badly. He did not even peep, for the hope that if he was quiet, they might go away.

The door was beginning to weaken, as the bars had not. It wasn't that they were being bent out of shape. It was more like the little nails that were in the joints were being shaken out. The girl did not seem to notice the Tainted's actions. For some reason, that had to be a good thing.

She reluctantly left the small tree. It wasn't like she could help it. Wait, was that water on the other side of the dune? Maybe this was the oasis. Then again, maybe it was a mirage.

The new monster was leaving already? That was great. Now all he had to worry about was the other one. Why did it keep following him though? Chi didn't feel like an easy target.

It had grown tired of the ramming. It hurt it when it did that. So how was it supposed to get free? Sit around and drool some more? That sounded like a good idea.

Mirages weren't evil, were they? Well, she was going to check it out anyways. If it was real, then they could have some water. If not, she would just keep looking. The girl trudged towards it with the cages.

Chi saw the water as well, though it might have just been in his imagination. He didn't mind if he could get a small drink. He really didn't need it. What he did need was a worm. Or some bits of bread, if that was possible.

Okay, so maybe the drooling was a little pointless. The bars weren't moving for it. It didn't think it could slid through the bars. And it was pretty sure the gate-thing would open on its' own. Then it could escape, if it just waited long enough.

The oasis remained, even after she reached the edge. It wasn't as green as people made it out to be. There was water, a pool that couldn't have been more than two feet. And a few scattered trees, along with some rocks one might shelter in during the day. It didn't look like a particularly nice place to live at, but it was cheerful enough for her.

The little bird squawked as it felt the impact. It had been lowered slowly but with monsters about, it was worrisome. Maybe it was food time? But wasn't it time to sleep? Chi was confused.

It felt the the cage drop slowly. It was very pleased, somehow thinking now would be its' chance. Or soon enough, anyways. It heard the panicked squawk and smiled to itself. What a nice noise.

She would let out Chi. If he flew away forever, at least he would be happy. Forget how she would never hear his little song. Let him bring happiness to lots of others. It would be rude to keep such talent to herself.

Chi backed away from the door, certain something was going to grab him. And nothing did. The door just lay open. What was he supposed to do? Walk out and let the scary dark get him?

The girl had opened the other cage. She was showing no signs of allowing its' release. And it was getting annoyed. It wanted outside, even if it didn't know why. It was getting out, one way or another.

Why wasn't Chi leaving? She tapped the cage, and he shot out. She sighed, but was genuinely happy. Now he could fly anywhere he wanted. But what the girl didn't realize how terrified the Matches had been.

He had not flapped away to explore the desert. No, he had chosen to roost on a tree in the oasis. Chi felt safer up so high. And now he could sleep. Not a single monster would reach him up there.

It would break out. Unfortunately, due to its' previous failures, it had no idea how to do that. Maybe more drool might help? Something seemed a little off on that idea. But what else could it do?

As she looked around the small oasis, she saw a slight light up in one of the trees. So Chi hadn't really left? No, it was probably just some trick of the eyes. Or maybe even just another pet. Well, what was she going to do about the other one?

Shi chirped, rather loudly, and stretched his wings. Now he could sleep, assuming no see-though things visited him. Or that some monster managed to climb up. Tucking his head into his chest, he drifted off to sleep. Would the tree catch on fire?

It would go to sleep. It could, couldn't it? Later it could make its' escape, and terrify something. When it finally was let out. of course. It curled up on the floor of it's cage, and went to sleep.
