Things that Explode in the Night [solo]

While she tried her best not to be too superstitious, Elesa had a bad feeling about this one. She tried to tell herself that it was just like any other mission, but she couldn't help but be a bit spooked by her surroundings. A graveyard didn't seem like much of a place for a fight, after all. She really hoped it was another false positive, merely someone a little over-paranoid about the dark. Then she could go home, and this would all be a funny story.

Elesa stepped especially carefully to avoid stepping on any graves. While she wasn't necessarily afraid of the dead, she didn't want to be disrespectful either. It was somewhat difficult to find the right paths to follow since many of them were overgrown with grass and weeds. It made Elesa sad to think of how long forgotten all the people here must be. It didn't look like anyone had walked this way in ages.

Nova was silent as she followed Elesa through the graveyard. It wasn't an active choice, really, she just couldn't think of anything appropriate to say. This really didn't feel like the place for idle chit chat, and Elesa looked a little uncomfortable anyway. She didn't want to bother anyone, so she was happy to focus on the mission. She kept her eyes peeled for any signs of movement in the dark.

Elesa abruptly stopped in front of her, and Nova nearly tripped over herself trying to avoid crashing into her partner. Before she could even ask what was going on, Elesa sighed. "Looks like a dead end, we'll have to go back."

Nova looked out into the darkness in front of them and back at the faint trail they had taken to get here.
While she didn't want to disagree, she also thought they should check out everything, not just places along the old path. "I'm not sure," Nova said. "I think we should take a look, just in case."

Elesa really didn't want to wander into the darker, less easily navigated part of the graveyard, but Nova did have a point. She had to put aside her silly superstitions and keep going. "Yea, you're right," Elesa agreed with a nod. "Let's go." She created a small spark of electricity in her palm and held it out in front of her to light the way. Something about holding it made her feel more safe against the darkness.

Nova felt the energy radiate out from Elesa's spark. She wanted to reach out and touch it, to take it for herself. She shook her head, trying to rid her mind of such thoughts. While she was trying to center herself,
Elesa wandered away, none the wiser. "Ah, wait a sec," Nova called out. This was not at all the sort of place she wanted to be left behind in the dark.

"Sorry! I thought you were right beh... oof!" Elesa's sentence was cut short as Nova smashed right into her, throwing the both of them to the ground. Her sparking light was swiftly swept away into the darkness as its energy drained into Nova.

"Oh, uh, I'm so sorry," Nova scrambled to her feet and took a few stumbling steps backward. Her bright green eyes glowed softly in the darkness and showed clearly her look of pure terror. Screw graveyards, this was the stuff that nightmares were made of. Now Elesa would never trust her as a teammate!

"I'm okay," Elesa insisted, pulling herself to her feet. Her knee scraped on a rock and was now bleeding,
but she didn't even notice. She dusted herself off and drew a new spark, wincing with the effort. It didn't feel like she had absorbed the first one, but it wasn't there any more so she could only guess that she did it unintentionally.

"Are you alright? You're not hurt are you?" Elesa asked, her large pink eyes swelling with concern. She took a few steps closer to her friend and reached up to put her hand on her shoulder, but Nova backed away from her touch. She dropped her hand awkwardly to her side and decided not to say anything else. Obviously Nova didn't want to be touched right now, and she was going to respect that.

Nova had always been hard to read. Elesa was friendly with most of her classmates, but she barely knew Nova at all. Other than the fact that they shared some classes, she didn't know anything about her new mission partner. She thought that this trip might be a good reason to get to know each other, but it was looking like that might not be the case. Elesa was concerned that maybe Nova didn't like her for some reason that she didn't realize.

'Why is she staring at me like that?' Nova wondered looking back at Elesa. She didn't look mad, as Nova was expecting. She was just too nice to notice what a screw up she was, Nova thought. Thinking about it made her uncomfortable so she suggested that they move on. "I'm fine. We should keep going."

"Yea, okay," Elesa somewhat hesitantly turned around. For a second there, she thought Nova was going to say something else. Maybe even open up. Looks like that wasn't the case, and Elesa wasn't about to push it. If they were going to become friends, it would require more patience than that. If...

"I think we should do a loop around the fence first," Nova said, squinting through the darkness at the rickety old metal fence that outlined the graveyard. It certainly wasn't keeping anything out. If a monster wanted somewhere easy to access and not often traveled by people, this would be the perfect place.

"Yea," Elesa nodded. "Sounds good." She turned away and frowned at the dark outline of the fence. This place was getting more and more creepy the longer they spent here. Couldn't they have gotten a super warm, relaxing beach mission or something? Instead they had to search through an old, abandoned, cold, and overgrown graveyard.

Elesa crept forward, holding out the spark of light in front of her. Nova followed closely behind, though not closely enough to trip and knock them both over again. So far, everything looked the same. Gravestones, long grass, and a dilapidated old fence. This place couldn't be more boring if it tried. However, a particularly decorative stone caught her attention. Actually it was more like a statue.

"Look at this," Nova said, ushering Elesa over. Both girls stopped to look at the intricately carved statue that marked a particular grave.

The statue was of a winged creature, which in and of itself wasn't so strange. What made it unique was it's fish-like tail and deer-like head. The body was too damaged to show much detail, but it was clearly some kind of quadrupedal predator. The head of the creature, despite having the soft features of a deer, also had huge fangs and gemstones for eyes.

"It looks like..."

"a shadow monster." Though Nova started the sentence, Elesa finished it. The two girls had obviously come to a similar conclusion while looking at the odd figure. "I wonder why it's here," Elesa mused.

"Maybe it's something else. This place is pretty old." Nova suggested. The very idea of it being a shadow monster made her uncomfortable. She was considerably less creeped out by this place than Elesa was, but that just didn't sit right with her at all.

"... Yeah," Elesa agreed with a nod. It made her feel better to assume it was just some weird thing than a really old depiction of a shadow monster. Why would someone want to commemorate a grave with such a scary thing, anyway? "Oh, I know, what if they were an artist, and this was their greatest creation?"

"Maybe it was just a test or something," Nova added in with a chuckle. "They wanted to try fur and horns and scales, but couldn't be bothered making all the different animals."

"That's so it! Man you're a genius. Not creepy at all, just artsy."

The girls shared a laugh in the darkness. The sound of them laughing echoed off the nearby mausoleums and made them both jump with fright. When they realized they had both been startled by something so silly, they began to laugh again, this time at themselves.

Eventually the girls calmed down and decided to get back to the mission. It had to be a crazy sight if anyone were observing them: just two young women, standing in a graveyard laughing at a statue. As it got quiet again, the creepy sounds of the background dropped back in, somehow seeming much louder than before. The teammates met eyes and nodded, silently agreeing to press forward.

Walking past a mausoleum, Nova heard a faint hiss. She looked to Elesa, but there was no sign that it came from her. Just to be safe, she whispered. "Hey Elesa, was that you?"

"Was what me?"

"... so it wasn't you that just hissed?"

"Why would I hiss?"

"I don't know!" Nova was really starting to sound a bit panicked now. Something wasn't right here. She could feel it in the air. A malignant energy. "I think we need to check it out. It came from over here," she indicated, taking a few cautious steps in that direction.
