Return to Aldrect, the Holy City

Medical Mysteries [M:L]

Aldrect, The Holy City. Holy to some, Esther supposed. But it had its seedy underbelly just like anywhere else. In her time working for the Cynthia Brodnax Detective Agency that was one thing that she'd learned very well. No matter how much a place was white marble on top, you'd eventually find the tufa underneath. Esther frowned at her internal monologue. Tufa was... too specialised maybe? She'd been going for a kind of ancient Rome thing and? No. Obsidian worked better, she thought.

She'd left the detective agency at 9:00AM sharp, case file still warm from the printer. Cynthia herself had handed it to her, which Esther thought showed a degree of trust. She was the youngest of Cynthia's detectives, as well as her newest hire, and she was practically glowing as she drove to one of the city's many hospitals and paid the extortionate parking fee.

The crime had taken place last night, around midnight. A young man had been beaten around the head by two unidentified figures who'd since run into the night. The police were treating it as another mugging, but Cynthia saw something more sinister in it. It was Esther's job to find out the truth, no matter which way it lay.

She was willowy, her curtain of dark hair moving behind her as she strode through the hospital doors. She paused by the reception to ask where she was headed, and then set off, her small kitten heels clacking on the polished floors. She didn't necessarily strike you as a hard-boiled private eye. Esther was in her mid-twenties, with a face that struck one as being earnest ahead of everything else. There was a steady determination in her brown eyes, though.

She approached the ward she needed, counting down the left and right turns in her head until she was sure she'd reached the right point. Esther pushed open the double doors and approached the counter with a smile. "Excuse me? I'm here to see Mr. Jameson."

The day had started just like any other, but it had soon turned into one of her favorite situations. She got word that someone had ended up here further to a beating that seemed to hide more than met the eye. She had been efficient and professional in her carrying out her job, but now, sitting idly by the station, her mind whirled with all sorts of possibilities...

Mysteries and police cases always got her imagination running wild. Did he owe money? Had he threatened a mob? Had he dealt in some questionable dealings, making him an enemy of powerful criminals? Surely, with all the circumstances, it couldn't have simply been a fight between drunken folks. There had to be something behind it all. Oh, how she wished she could find out!

... And maybe, she just might. "Oh, hello! Welcome!" she greeted the woman, a bit of excitement in her voice, and a curious shine in her brown eyes. The others had spread the word that a detective would be passing by to investigate what had happened. Now, if she just kept quiet and low, she could... "Yes, absolutely," she added as she got up from her chair, and started leading the detective down the hall, towards the room of the patient she wished to meet, a petite, but relatively tall, nurse leading the way.

Before long, they were by the room. Considering his injuries, they had decided to keep the patient's room close to the station, just in case something happened. "I have to warn you Mr. Jameson is still in recovery," she warned the detective. "So please don't push him too hard. Stressing him could aggravate his state and make him plummet." Did she want this detective to squeeze every last juicy mystery bits out of this patient? Absolutely. But she was also a nurse first, and a closeted, amateur sleuth second. The safety and well-being of her patients came first.

"But if you need anything," she added, as she tried to keep the excited, mischievous glint in her eyes, "I'll be right here," she said, pointing to the station. "You just need to ask for Agatha."

Esther nodded in understanding. "I just have a few questions for Mr. Jameson in light of the apparent mugging. I'll try not to cause any upset, but as he improves I may end up visiting again." Of course, Esther was a private eye and there was little she could to to force anyone to answer her questions, but if it ended up being a police matter in the end then it mattered very little whether it was her getting answers of the Aldrect P.D. Besides, if she knew her boss any, she'd pull a few strings and get Detective Nakamura on the case, one of the few police detectives at central who actually took them seriously. She was definitely getting ahead of herself, though.

Esther caught the exited glint in the nurse's eyes, and it didn't take a detective to work out that that might have something to do with the investigation about to take place in her ward. "Agatha, is it?" she asked. "I'm just wondering if you wanted to sit-in on the interview, to keep an eye on Mr. Jameson's health." Truth be told, Esther hadn't ever interviewed a victim that was as ill as Jameson, and the thought was starting to make her a little nervous. It didn't show, though. "Of course, if he wants to discuss something in private, that's different, but I'm intending to begin with some simple preliminary questions."

She looked at Agatha again, as if seeing her for the first time and suddenly paused. "Is there a reason Mr. Jameson is in his own room and not in a ward? Have you noticed anything unusual about his injuries...?" From her pocket she dug out a small notepad, and she flicked to an empty page.
