Return to Aldrect, the Holy City

Blaine slowly pushed the door open, and together, the siblings warily walked inside the room. At first, it looked questionable, but not entirely problematic. It was bizarre to find a lab this clean, yet this disturbed. But both siblings had seen similar things before. A creepy, desolate laboratory: it was a favorite amongst the crooks.

"Did we trek through these sewers... for this?" Sienna asked, partly to herself, partly to her brother.

Blaine didn't answer her musings. There was something else here, he was sure of it. Something in his gut once again, something that made him queasy, that made him know, for sure, that this place wasn't right.

A particular door caught his attention.

Blaine's memory faded after they found the door.

It had gone wrong; so very wrong. He remembered test tubes, grotesque shapes, both inside the tubes and outside. He remembered feeling sick to his stomach, feeling completely disoriented, his brain going in and out of consciousness. Something — something about the sights of that room had triggered something deep within him.

He remembered being grateful for Sienna being with him. She had kept her cool, even though she hadn't had the guts to admit to him that her stomach, too, had turned upside down at the sights. Creatures — if you could call them that — were sprawled throughout the room, not yet dead, but not quite alive, either.

Neither could speak. Blaine least of them, but Sienna, too, found she had nothing to say.

They couldn't stay long. The eerie creatures were aware of them, and a few of them started to crawl towards them. They seemed completely unaware of their surroundings besides Blaine and Sienna, their targets. Some of the other creatures were tangled up in some sort of thread, and were they unlucky enough, the crawling monsters would pull at the threads; and the creatures would unravel, right then and there.

Blaine only remembered Sienna urging him to leave. She held and dragged him along, his body following robotically, his legs going wherever they needed to go.

This was all wrong. But Blaine had seen so much worse. Why did this affect him so strongly, out of everything he had experienced?

He remembered Sienna getting them both out of those sewers. She'd swiped his card in order to close the door behind them, leaving whatever unholy experiments had happened here where they belonged.

Before long, they were back outside, back to the surface, to the normal world. Even though Blaine could barely register it, those creatures, that lab, all burned into his brain.

And for the first time, he wondered if it had been worth it to take a job.
