Russ smiled. Finnian was strange, but he was... well, there was something that seemed to genuine and kind, but subdued too. Russel couldn't quite work him out. He was still determined to find out what had gone on by the lake, what had gone on with Aonbharr. Despite that, he didn't trust himself to bring up the boy's guardian and question Finnian about him. Of course, he could be jumping to conclusions, Russell had been a bit out of it last time he'd seen Aonbharr, what if he was misremembering? "How long have you been living here?" Russell asked, hoping it was an innocuous question. "It's a nice spot, I'm surprised you don't get more visitors." Then again... had Russell ever seen anyone down here? He'd walked by the lake a few times, and he'd always been surprised by how quiet it was.

The boy's eyes lit up briefly with concern, but whatever had been up with Finnian seemed to be no more than a cold shiver. "Lapin, yes. I used to suffer from very bad fits as a child. By the time I turned twelve I had to be removed from school. For awhile it really didn't look good." He fidgeted a little as he spoke, Russ was used to repeating this story, but tended to shy away from explaining how ill he'd actually been. It didn't seem real, somehow, all of these years on. "Lapin was a very old friend of my parents, they'd lost contact so didn't realize he'd become a specialist in cases like mine. His treatment saved me, I haven't had a fit since. Recently Lapin changed my prescription, but I had an adverse reaction to it, that was what you saw by the lake." Russ regretted having to lie outright, but it wasn't as if he could confess the truth. Lapin was not an old friend of his parents, Russ, too young to be that ill had summoned Lapin and made a deal. Lapin was a creature of the mind, of thought, he'd been the perfect fit for Russ's problem, and by effectively signing over his magical talent to Lapin, the creature had been able to create itself a physical form, if one that was entirely dependent on Russel's continued existence.

Still a little puzzled as to what that strange burning sensation had been, Finnian was a little bit out of it when Russ posed his next question. "How long? Ahh..." Finnian echoed him just to properly etch the question into his brain and think on it, frowning slightly when he couldn't answer right away. "I... can't imagine it's been a short time. I think I've lived there for quite awhile... I have a poor memory. Faulty parts I guess," he chuckled in the sheepish way that implored Russ not to worry.

He listened attentively when Russ began to explain his past with this Lapin fellow, and Finnian's eyes grew soft, a quiet worry in them. "What an amazing doctor," he mused softly, smiling to himself. "I'm definitely glad you're better. Adverse reactions aside," he added with a renewed chuckle. "I guess it's serendipitous, if it let us meet. N-not that I'm happy about you passing out for several days in the slightest." He seemed earnest in his last sentence, brows knitting. "But... thank you for meeting me out here, again." His voice had grown soft, gaze flicking down to his pale, folded hands in his lap. "I liked talking to you very much, before."

Strange again. It didn't seem as if the other boy could give a straight answer to anything. It wasn't that he minded this dreaminess, in fact, Russ found it charming. Still, it seemed strange that there wasn't something concrete that Finnian could give him. Russ smiled. "Do you remember moving in?" he said, his tone still light.

"He tries." Definitely amazing for a Doctor, less so for a demon. Sometimes Russ wondered if he'd held out that little bit longer whether or not any of the new medications that had since come about would have helped. He'd been exhausted, though, and ready to give up with it all. He'd made the decision, and at the time it had seemed like the only one available. "Thank you. It shouldn't happen again."

Huh. Serendipity huh? It did seem a little that way. Russ had passed by the lake several times, and he'd never come across Finnian before. It seemed like the right person appeared at the right moment. Perhaps, like Finnian at the lake, he could also be the right person at the right time, and figure out what had gone on Finnian and Aonbharr and everything else. (Or, he was letting himself indulge in daft romantic twaddle again.) "Well, some good did come out of it."

Russell looked at the pale boy beside him and wondered what the hell he was doing, and on who's account was he doing it. Finnian was gentle and shy and caring, a strange, soft-spoken angel of a boy and he- Oh. Well, then perhaps Russ knew who he was doing this for, but what was he doing? Trying to figure out what happened? Trying to help? Or was he just creating more trouble? "Part of me wondered if you were going to be here, you know. After what happened when I left." Well, he may as well bite the bullet.

Russ tried to meet Finnian's gaze. "I enjoyed talking to you too."

Finnian blinked slowly at the question given to him. "No, I... don't," he admitted softly, shaking his head. This did seem to trouble him for a few moments, as the gears in his brain seemed to turn, attempting to shake off immovable cobwebs that blocked his memory. His thumb rubbed over a streak of dried paint on his arm, watching it flake and crumble off with a blank look on his face. He looked up, eyes on the lake, when Russ continued to speak, his brows barely knitting together. Then his expression softened, but sobered. "I said I would be here," he murmured, thumb pressed to the area of skin the paint had fallen off of, as if to cover up the new imperfection in the pattern.

It was difficult for Russ to meet the pale boy's eyes, but eventually, the latter relented. He turned his head to stare at Russ, his expression pained. "I'm sorry for how I acted, when I left. I really... don't know what came over me..." He spoke as though he were telling the truth, but perhaps didn't quite know the entire truth himself--and felt guilty that he couldn't divulge what he did not know or understand.

Strange. How very strange. Even if you didn't really remember the day itself, surely you'd have a vague impression left over. Russ tried to reach out a little, as cliche as it was, the magician's sixth sense did exist. Although since making his deal, Russ felt like he was wading through cotton wool. He could get a sense of the boy, an impression of the cool surface of the lake, and there was something else there, around. Something less like the pristine surface, and more like the dark water underneath.

"It didn't seem like you at all." Russ had a faraway look about him, he was lost in thought. "It's fine, really."

The boy seemed to come back to himself a little, resolved in whatever he'd been thinking through. He met Finnian's eyes, twisting round so he could face him directly. "Finnian, I have a question for you. I want to know if you've ever really thought about magic, about strange and impossible things. I guess, I want to know if you believe in them or not."

Russell's initial response made Finnian's expression tighten with a kind of apprehension, feathers not fully flattened even with the other boy's assurance that things were alright. Surely if he himself felt that something was off, and Russell felt that something was off, then perhaps... something was off. He tried to ignore it, for the sake of agreeing with Russ that, at least for now, everything was fine. The lake was beautiful and the breeze was soft, a sensation that Finnian could barely feel on his skin.

(And yet he could see it as it rustled Russ' hair, and he knew it had to be stronger than what he felt. He hated noticing these things. They made the gears in his mind hurt something terrible.)

He straightened up ever so slightly as Russ turned to face him fully, his grip on his painted arm tightening a bit. The question he was met with was said with such earnestness that he had half a mind to answer right away. But he paused--trying to analyze the question. Whatever was being said, it felt important. But it was not phrased like a trap.

"Yes," he said simply, after a moment, his expression serious but soft. And gave no further explanation. "I definitely do. Yes."

A small smile tugged at Russ's lips. That question had had no right answer, really, but Finnian had given him the correct one. Russ was going to do this thing properly, then. As he scooted forward a little, he was aware of edging in on Finnian's personal space. "Let me show you something impossible."

He'd have to be subtle, very subtle. Both Asa and Lapin would be spitting blood if they knew the risk he intended on taking. He focussed, drawing his finger gently along Finnian's paint covered arm. His hand was cool, but not as icy as Finnian. As he moved, the paint there shifted, moving, colours mixing and spiralling deeper into the patterns Finnian had painted. Slowly they twisted back into place and froze there.

"Its magic," he said simply. "I can't do much more than that though, or I'll get ill."

Russ wasn't sure if he should move out of Finnian's space, so he hovered awkwardly, one hand on the trunk of the tree they were sitting under. "I think you might be under a spell. I might be wrong, but we could try and find out."

Their knees were brushing--Finnian could feel that slight pressure against his knees, that tangible, solid feeling that the breeze couldn't provide. He wanted to lean into it, but it would be improper to do so, no matter how much he sought out that grounded feeling.

Besides, there were more interesting things to focus on, like the finger trailing down his arm. Finnian needlessly took in a soft, sharp breath, his eyes widening as he watched the designs on his arm shift and dance along his skin as if they were alive. His eyes had a different quality to them, something beautiful and bright and alive, for just a few moments--and then the patterns stilled, and he turned his face up to Russ, beaming like the sun as he reached out and grasped Russ' hand tight in both of his. "That was incredible!" he exclaimed, his ice-cold hands still for a moment, before he loosened his grip, embarrassed by his own excitement. "I-I'd ask you to do it again, but I don't want you to get sick, hah..."

His face fell slightly, letting go of Russ' hand, his own hands hovering in the air for a moment before he laced them at his midriff and knitted his brows. He let out a slight laugh, shrugging and shaking his head. "I don't... I don't think you're far off," he admitted after a moment. "Since you're a magic user, I suppose you'll believe me if I say that Aonbharr has his tricks." He stiffened sharply, realizing he'd said the man's full name, and he clapped his hands over his mouth, fear flickering in his eyes as an awareness that wasn't his own crept into his bones. Someone was listening. He was listening. He quickly pressed one of his freezing hands over Russ' mouth to prevent him from speaking, his other one holding a finger in front of his own mouth for a few moments.

It passed, after a moment. Finnian let go of Russ and let out a soft breath of apology, cutting his eyes away, the light in his eyes replaced with a tired dullness. "Forgive me for that, please... He... he can hear, or... worse, if I say his full name, even if he's far away."

Finnian's hands were cold, but Russ didn't really notice. The contact was electric. He was such a ridiculous fool. He got crushes so easily, and this one on Finnian had caught him in its grasp. The way the boy's face lit up, his eyes, god, his eyes. It was doing something to his poor, sentimental heart. "Ah. Thank you! Maybe another time. Like I said, I can do little bits of magic." He'd already given Finnian the other explanation for his illness, perhaps he'd connect the two himself, but for now Russ wouldn't contradict himself. He wasn't sure Lapin would like others knowing the full extent of their connection.

Russ began to query what Finnian had to say when the boy's hand was clamped across his mouth, and this time, Russ did notice how cold he was. Worry knitted his brows together even after Finnian had explained what was wrong. "A lot of non-human creatures have that. Demons, faery-creatures, maybe even some spirits or gods, although I don't know much about them." His own demon, for instance. Lapin was just a short hand. His real name, his true name had been given up the day Lapin had bound the two of them together. "So. Yes. I believe you."

Russ stayed where he was, knees still bumping up against Finnian's. "I suppose the real question is: what do you want to do about it?"

Finnian listened quietly, eyes focused on their knees, brushing soft together with every shift of Russ' breathing. He... really didn't know anything about demons or fae creatures. He'd heard of them before, but... had he? Had he heard of them before now? Finnian quietly rubbed his head, as if something was hurting him, but it was more to attempt to sweep away the clouded confusion that muddled his brain whenever he tried to think about the past. Before he lived in the cabin, if there ever was a before.

"...'do?'" Finnian whispered, raising his head with a half-squint of bemusement. "What... do you mean 'do' about it? It's just the way it's always been," he explained softly, not meaning to frown, but the dregs of Aonbharr's control still clung to him like a malaise, even if the demon was no longer listening. "You don't think he's some sort of... of... one of those things? A demon? A faery, or... god?" He certainly seemed powerful like a god--all hearing, all seeing, but only when his name was spoken, as far as Finnian's knowledge went. He hadn't tested it very much, save for those few initial times. He hated the way it made his head feel.

"I mean," Russ said, "that just because something is the way it has always been, doesn't mean that it has to continue to be that way. I can help you change things, if you want?" He was looking into Finnian's eye's, trying to get across the importance of this. "Have you thought what you could do, if you weren't here, with him? You could travel, paint, display your artwork. Maybe you could make a living out of it, go to an art school. I know there's one in the city, so I'd, um, probably see you quite a bit."

He reached out to rest his hand on top of Finnian's. "I can deal with demons, maybe even a god with enough preparation. It doesn't matter, even if he is. I mean, you ought to be able to what you want, to get out, if he's controlling you. I don't want to pressure you, but you should think about what you want. I'll help you if I can."

Finnian could tell that Russ was trying to convey something to him. He seemed to wilt ever so slightly under the other boy's stare, despite his obvious desire to keep making eye contact. Where Aonbharr was concerned... Finnian's confidence was moot.

Russ' words tempted him. The soft brush of a hand on his own tempted him further, his cold skin not picking up on Russ' heat but loving the contact all the same. Slowly, his fingertips shifted to slot between the other boy's fingers, linking their hands wordlessly. He opened his mouth to speak, then closed it, a clearly conflicted tilt to his brow.

"I don't know, Russel," he murmured softly, his eyes on the paint on his arm, which moments ago had moved in beautiful little patterns. He wanted to see that again, not talk about Aonbharr. Even just thinking about the man... ah, his head hurt... "I just... I've been here with him for as long as my memory goes back, which I..." he paused to swallow, "I admit isn't very far at all."

It didn't particularly matter what Finnian wanted, he thought, if he wasn't wholly a person. A person had memories, had relationships, could feel things. He didn't like thinking about it. He tried to avoid the thought whenever possible and yet Russ was so alive and breathing in front of him that he was forced to consider the fact that he might be trapped in his current situation, metaphorically and literally. "I don't know where I would go," he finished, simply. "I've... never seen a city, I don't think."

As Finnian weaved his fingers through his own, Russ gave them a small squeeze, trying to be reassuring. "Are you happy here, Finnian? Is this what you want? I mean, it sounds like you're enchanted. Who knows what kind of life you've had before this. I just... you have been kind to me and interesting to talk to, don't you think you deserve to find some happiness? Or at least be able to make your own choices? I'm so worried for you." Russ admitted. He was so cold and pale, and something in his eyes seemed so similar to the glassy surface of the lake that Russell, in his mind's eye, could almost see the connection, see the threads of dripping water that wrapped around his neck and wrists keeping the boy tied to the lake, to the cabin, and most of all, to Aonbharr.

Russ liked him, for all of his strange, distant behaviour. He thought Finnian deserved more. "If you wanted to, you could come with me. I don't want to pressure you, but I can see you're not content here, and I like you. Please, just think about it." Russ's tone was imploring, the boy was now only a few inches from Finnian's face, worries about being seen as too forward pushed aside by his need to get his message across.

Russel's words flitted about his mind like noisy birds, catching in his hair and pulling little pinpricks of pain over his scalp. Happy? Enchanted? Deserve? He felt something hurt in the hollow of his chest, but Russ' words and concern seemed to soothe over the ache like a balm. It felt unfair, too, but it was a sweet unfairness--this warm-voiced boy with his kind eyes in front of him, touching him, making paint dance on his skin... Finnian felt ignorant in comparison. There was only his paintings, the cabin, and Aonbharr... what was all of this about gods and demons and enchantment and cities and choices--

Choices--

Finnian felt himself take a breath, and lean in. His lips ghosted Russel's, missing the mark ever so slightly and instead ending up near the corner of his mouth. His fingers untangled from the other boy's in a nervous frenzy, life seeming to pulse in the pit of his stomach for a brief moment. Warmth.

The sensation of heat was foreign, and the grin on his face was unknowable in its motive. "I'm sorry," he managed, clearing his throat and making a move to get up when the warmth disappeared and his skin returned to its freezing state. He hadn't kissed a boy in a very long time, he was sure--but the feeling was familiar, so he must have done it before. Before Aonbharr. He blinked, then stood up fully, his face ghostly pale but perhaps there would be a brush of pink there, in another time. "Thank you. I promise I'll think about this."

Russ felt too aware of his limbs, his hands lost  as Finnian's fingers twisted away from his, his shoulders tense in surprise, all of him held at an awkward angle, but aware, too, of Finnian. The boy's eyes closed as he leaned towards him, the way the fading light caught his pale hair, the scent of the river, mixed with the smell of paint and chalk. Russ could feel the lonely, melancholy part of himself set alight and melt away. There was Finnian's lips on the edge of his mouth, warm for someone with such cold hands, and then the moved away.

Russ watched him stand up, eyes fixed on the other boy's face. It took him a moment to realise that Finnian was smiling. A kind of cloying fretfulness had settled over him and he was scouring for any sign that it had been some mistake, that Finnian regretted his actions, that there had been something insincere about them. Russ shook his head. "No, its fine. Um. More than fine." He pushed his worries to one side and stood up.

"Would you want to see me again?"
