Vio sighed. As she walked through the tall grass of the plains, she avoided looking at Kia, in case the child took that as incentive to talk.
"Hay, Vio, what's wrong? You look down!"
Well, that wasn't going to work. Looking down, Vio gave a start as Kia's face was right in front of hers. The girl had jumped onto a rock so she was Vio's hight. Vio smiled sweetly and cautiously.
"Kia...sweetie...nothing's wrong! I was just thinking about how my sister was stuck at home while we're out enjoying the day, that's all!" 'Cause if Sunny were out here, this job'd be so much easier. Oh dear, I may have overdone it with the sweetie part.
Kia's face first looked surprised, then crumpled. She dropped off the rock, shuffling away with her head down. Then she dropped down to sit on the ground, almost disappearing behind the tall grass. The only thing visible now was her draculi ears, and the bow in her hair.
"You're thinking about her right now, instead of me. You're supposed to be playing with me...do you hate me?" Kia's voice drifted over, sounding like she was about to cry.
Vio supressed a groan. She makes it so hard! Walking over, Vio bent over her.
"Naw, I just thought you'd have more fun if someone else were here, and since Sun is my sister, she's the first one I thought of! ...I thought of Nala too! Since she's your best friend and all!" And just how does that Tali handle it!?
Kia looked up suspiciously. Then the girl suddenly jumped up, surprising Vio and nearly whacking the woman in the chin, to run over to a large yellow flower off to the side. Vio sighed again and leant against another rock, watching the girl quietly.

It really was a beautiful day. The sun was shining... brightly... There were no trees it was hot. Man it was hot! There wasn't much movement besides the two girls (er, young woman and little girl, anyway) and quick shuffling in the grass. It could be a wombear... Or it could be hisper. The shuffling paused because whatever it was darted off with a chattering sort of sound and disappeared completely down a dark, cool earthy hole to ride out the days heat.

Vio's head drooped and her eyes fluttered as sleepiness overcame her. Just as she was about to doze off, a rustling noise reached her ears. Quickly looking up to make sure Kia was still nearby, she sighed in relief then looked around for the source curiously. Upon seeing nothing, she figured it was some sort of wild creature. Hopefully Kia won't notice. I'm not in the mood to chase her all over the plains.
Thankfully, the girl didn't notice the creature. Instead, she noticed a cluster of birds in the distance.
"Oh no. No, no, no...KIA!" She groaned, and took off after the girl, shouting loudly.
This is not her day. The hot sun beat down on her and she tried hard to keep up to the entergetic child. This is not the way she'd prefer to spend her day. No way.
Vio would much rather be amongst a bundle of people, stirring up trouble. After all, tricking people, getting them into trouble, and still getting what you want; it's three times as fun!
Eventually she caught up to Kia who was suffocating a poor wild crow (or something like a crow anyway). Vio sighed, but it caught midbreath as Kia turned her gaze from the terrified bird to her. Vio winced. Yeah, you should be scared. This girl is the scariest thing I've ever seen. Evil behind all that cuteness. Worst part is...she doesn't even know it!
Kia had now released the bird, who flew off in a frenzy, igniting a chain of fear in the flock. For a few minutes, both Kia and Vio ignored each other and instead shielded themselves from the flurry of bird bodies, feathers and wings erupting around them. When all the birds had flown away, Vio quickly straightened herself and smiled sweetly at Kia. The girl didn't buy it.
"Well, well, well, miss know-it-all here thinks I'm crazy. The bird scratched me, what did you want me to do? Maybe I should tell Jaden or momma that you don't care what happens to me. You let me get hurt by a bird. And what will they think when you send me to catch a vicious snake?" Kia gave Vio a sinister smile as she crossed her arms.
Vio frowned, confused. "But I never...", then it hit her and the colour drained out of her face, "Kia...don't do it. There's no need to do something drastic, we're getting along just fine."
Oh boy, how to worm out of this one?

Much to Vio's pleasure (and eventually, her dismay) Kia gave her a look of shock.
"No! I wouldn't go after a scary ol' snake. That's why they put 'em in cages right? Because they're dangerous? ...I'M SCARED!! There's lots of snakes out here! And other bad animals!" squatting, Kia buried her head in her knees. Vio realized just too late what was going through the girl's head as Kia put her hands on her ears. Vio quickly followed suit, just as the child let off an ear-splitting shriek. Vio inched forward, wishing she had brought earplugs. Her eyes began to water as she bent down next to the shrieking girl.
"Kia! Kia, it's okay! STOP IT!!" The woman tried to scream loud enough for the girl to hear, but her voice was naturally quiet. Not even a few seconds later, just as the thought of backing away flicked through her mind, her vision went black and passed out.

Yeah, that's what you get for tiring yourself out running after a little kid in this heat, then wasting energy trying to scream over her as she shrieked so loudly your ears would already be ringing at that close range.

Soon, Vio was aware of a distant voice. After a moment, she was able to recognize the voice, despite her head ringing.
"Tsuki wa mata atarashii shuuki de ume o terashidasu...
Inori o sasagete atarashii hi o matsu
Asayaka ni hikaru umi sono hate made..." Then a rustling sound, and Kia whispered something Vio was just able to make out as, "Hito no kokoro wa utsuriyuku mukedashiteku naru..."
After a moment, Vio realized where she had heard the song before and relayed the english translation in her head.
It means...
'The moon in its new cycle shines on the boats again
I give a prayer as I wait for the new day
Shining vividly up to the edge of that sea.'
But...that last line...doesn't come next...it means 'People's hearts change and sneak away from them.'
Why...would she say it? She must be confused. Heck, I'M confused. My head hurts.
With a groan, Vio opened her eyes to see Kia sitting on a boulder ahead of her, her tail swinging rythymatically as she hummed. At the sound of Vio shifting, Kia turned. Quietly, the girl jumped down and ran over. Vio quickly and worriedly scanned the girl's face, trying to figure out what the girl was feeling now. She was surprised to find an honest, kind look on her face, a look Vio never saw before. Kia bent over and helped Vio sit up before kneeling in front of her.
"Vio...am I...do I act funny?" Vio looked at her temporary charge quizzically. Tenatively, she nodded and Kia looked down sadly.
"I'm sorry, Vio. I don't know who I am. I'm scared, Vio...I don't remember anything...I just know because of the way everyone treats me...only Mama, Jaden, and Nala are nice, aren't scared of me...and there are holes. In my memory, I mean. I only have a couple times in a day where I'm awake. I wake up anywhere...I'm sorry if I hurt you...I don't mean it...I think." Kia cried softly, putting her arms around herself as if she were cold.

Vio blinked slowly and hesitated, unsure of what to think. Eventually, she shook off her worry and decided Kia was being honest. Perhaps this was the real Kia...the Kia she would be if she didn't have this...illness or whatever it was. It would explain why Nala and Jaden were so kind...Maria was just blind to it, but the other two were being understanding. Smiling, she put her hand on Kia's head.
"Hay, don't apologize. It doesn't really matter to me. I mean sure, it's a pain, but I know you don't mean it. Be thankful that you do wake up...so more people can understand the real you." Wait...was she being honest? Vio, honest? Wow...that was a change. Honesty just because she felt like it...it felt good...but not that good. She still preferred being manipulative. Yes, she could admit she was like that...in her mind.
Kia looked up at the leawolf woman and smiled. Then slowly, she blinked and Vio snatched her hand back as if she was just watching her. Kia gave her a look of suspicion, then jumped up and turned, her nose in the air so to speak.
"What are you just standing there for? Let's go. Now." Kia commanded, walking away. Vio smiled as she stood and followed.
"Yes ma'am," she said under her breath. But now she knew about the real Kia and hoped the girl could work her way past this...hindrace.
Besides...if she were to be herself, that'd be one less punishment for Jaden and Echo to give her.
