Aragorn remained silent, perhaps sensing that I would continue. “There’s a lot of things I miss from home that I can’t find here. Like electricity, and indoor plumbing.” I grinned at his confused look, but didn’t elaborate. “But this is like…this is a second chance. A chance to start over and make something of my life. I kind of feel like I’m helping by being here, even though I know I’m not.” I shot him a look full of amusement. “Although, granted, I did warn you about the soup.” Which was true; I had warned him when we’d first set out in passing about taking food from pretty ladies, but hadn’t quite elaborated.
Aragorn snorted faintly, muttering something that sounded like ‘You should have been more specific,’ before I continued. “I’m not going to deny that I miss my parents. Never seeing them is something…well, it’s something I’ll have to come to terms with, but everyone has to deal with loss at some point in their life. I will love them for the rest of my life, and their memory is something I will treasure and keep close, and I hope they will do the same. If I’m lucky, I’ll see them one day, after everything is over for me. As for friends…Well, I was too busy with school to have many close friends by the time I got into college, so there aren’t too many other people besides my family I miss. So I guess…in short, I’m doing fine. I’m going to have a few things to deal with when it really hits, but I’m fine, otherwise. As fine as I can be, for now.”
I love adventurous tales like that. That uplifting feeling that comes from seeing unknown lands and the knowledge that you came across—nothing can replace it! It opens a path from which self-confidence, experience, and important friendships—from the sharing of life or death situations—are born! But hearing it just isn’t the same. I want to create my own magnificent story!
