A Wolf, Spider, and Snake (Self)

Postby Sarah » 05/23/2015 9:50 PM

A harsh scaly looking woman strolled down the market street. Vendors of all kinds were behind their stalls shouting over the bustle of midday slaves picking up goods for their masters. Each one claiming to be better than the last. It was all a great distraction from the less than-

“Viper!” someone’s shout could be heard above the rest and people flinched back watching their feet and trying to find somewhere else to be. The woman just sighed and turned down the alleyway to her right. The place she was sure the shout had originated from.

“What a stupid nickname you’ve given me,” the woman chastised as she stalked down the alley. “Shall I call you Wolf?” she asked knowing her ‘friend’ would be more than pleased to receive such a name.

“You already call me Wolf,” The faceless voice said. A lanky woman was sitting atop some boxes her dark amber eyes watched the snake woman closely.

Viper narrowed her bright yellow eyes when she spotted the other woman. Wolf in return gave a toothy smile. “You draw too much attention,” Viper said sounding displeased.

“You look like a viper. What else would you have me call you? After all I don’t know your real name,” the lanky woman retorted. It was true, Viper really did look like a snake. Her skin was very subtly scaly and her unnaturally yellow eyes didn’t have the normal round pupils of a mammal.

“Call me what you like. Just don’t shout if from the rooftops,” Viper chided.

Wolf’s head snapped up and her eyes rested on the entry way to the alley. “Spider will be here soon,” she said quietly.

“Good,” Viper mumbled.

Nimbly Wolf hopped off of the boxes. Her long legs and shaggy red hair made her look like the wolves of the plain that stretched out for miles around the city. Her tanned skin and deep amber eyes didn’t help either. Although it was hard to be anything less than deeply tan in a city with no shade. Soon enough, just as Wolf had said, Spider was picking her way down the alley. Her dark skin and black clothing made her easy to pick out against the tans of the buildings and junk. “Hello,” she said, her voice was barely a whisper.

“Widow,” Wolf said bowing slightly. Spider got her nickname from her dark cloak that had a blood red diamond on it just like the widow spiders that hid in people’s attics. Viper had always called her Spider but Wolf felt it was less respectful. Of the three of them Wolf was sure Spider was the best at her job.

Spider's ice blue eyes stood out against her black and dark red colors. The contrast was often startling, but paired with her lithe form and reputation she rarely drew attention to herself. Her ability to hide in the shadows and walk unnoticed among a crowd made her arguably the more deadly of the three.

“Now that we’re all here,” Viper started. She looked at Wolf and Spider. They weren’t to be trusted. It was rare for their type to gather and when they did only bad things could happen.

“How are we going to kill the king?” Wolf interjected with a smirk on her face. She let her smugness radiate as Viper glared at her.

“Perhaps we should move to a place with less ears,” Spider told them before whisking her way back into the crowd. She felt the other woman’s eyes on her as she left. It irked her to think they could openly speak about a private matter. Subtlety would be key if they were going to succeed in working together. Not only that, but Wolf had asked the wrong question. How did one kill a king? Spider had never killed a king and she knew the other two hadn’t either. Somehow the underground felt they were the best in the business. Spider had disagreed. They weren’t the best, they were hardly good enough for their names. Wolf had been too arrogant and Viper didn’t trust anyone enough to work in a team. Perhaps their masters expected them to kill each other.
