It had been a good number of years after the whole zombie thing had finally ended and CEDA had let his ass out of their camps. Life had gone somewhat back to normal, everyone had gone their separate ways and everything was just great...and wrong. It felt so wrong anymore everything so quiet and peaceful, Ellis keeps expecting to hear the groans and screeches of zombies every time he goes to lay down to sleep. Every firecracker puts him on edge as he remembers all the times he had been shot at, and all the shooting he had done.

The world was moving on, but was he?

Ellis was sitting on his folding lawn chair taking a break from fixing an old oldsmobile when he first saw it and at first he thought it was smoke, but after a closer look, and a quick check around the shop, he determined it was not smoke but some kind of weird mist.

"Now that just ain't right. What the hell is this stuff?"

He kicked at the stuff to see what it do and nothing happened. Scrunching up his nose Ellis crouched down and put his hand through it trying to see if got his hand wet but nothing seemed to happen. No wetness, no residue, no nothing.

"Huh." he scratched his chin before jumping back up and heading over to the old tv set he had in the shop and flicking it on.

"Reports of a strange black mist have come in from across the globe. Scientists are puzzled as to it's source and just what this black mist is exactly. A scientist is offering a reward to anyone who can bring in more information on this mist. To get more information on the topic citizens are encouraged to visit the Lone Saloon and contact the scientist waiting there. In other news..."

Ellis frowned and flipped off the tv before heading into his back office and grabbing his shotgun and some ammunition. Last time things got weird, people died and zombies ruled the world. Like hell he's gonna go out unprepared and weaponless. Made that mistake the first time, not gonna make it a second time. He checked his gun and then slung its strap on his shoulder. He went around and closed up shop before putting some filled gas cans in the back seat of his truck and his bug out kit. He took a deep breath and got in his truck and started the engine.

"God, if yer there can ya tell the apocalypse ta wait 'til later? I jus' got done fightin' the first one."

With another deep breath he took out his phone and flipped to his contacts, selecting the last one used, he pressed talk.

"Hey Nick, if yer there it's Ellis. It looks like we gotta problem."

Life hasn't been the same since the apocalypse. Nick tried to go back to his old life of drifting, gambling, and generally conning his way across the country, but something felt...off. From sleepless nights, to reaching out in the dark for another warm body just to reassure himself the kid was still there. Ellis...god he shouldn't have parted ways with him but the guy was too nice, too good for him so Nick had broke things off between the two of them and left. Better that than get the kid into all kinds of trouble he didn't need in his life.

Nick was at another cheap hotel, just having woken up from a night long drunken stupor, when his phone began to ring incessantly. Grumbling to himself he wiggled across the bed to fish his phone off of the nightstand. Finally grabbing it he rubbed his eyes as he sat up, then went pale when he saw the contact name. Ellis. God damn it. God fucking damn it. Nick debated letting it go to voicemail, internally struggling to convince himself to stay away, before with a soft 'fuck it' he pressed talk.

"Yeah...?"

"Hey Nick, if yer there it's Ellis. It looks like we gotta problem."

"Of course I'm fucking there, I just answered the phone."

"Oh..."

Nick sighed as he could imagine the look of embarrassment crossing Ellis' face.

"What's the problem, kid? Another zombie apocalypse or did you lose your hat?"

"Ha ha, real funny, Nick. No, it ain't no zombies an' I didn' lose my hat. There's some kinda black mist everywhere and I ain't so sure it ain't trouble. Some scientist sayin' he's lookin' for people ta investigate it an' I'd thought we could go on over an' check it out."

A black mist? Seriously? That's what's it? It was probably just some polluted water no big deal...but then again everyone thought the green flu wasn't a big deal at the beginning too.

"Shit, kid. Just, just gimme a minute to get my shit. Where are you at?"
