Probably nothing good either, if it was prompting her to urge Fluffmutter to talk faster.

But rather than acquiesce to her wishes, Fluffmutter fell silent again. The only thing about this silence that placated anyone was that they could all tell that it was the silence of someone clearly trying to figure out how to say something. And it wasn't even that this something was a difficult thing to talk about, but that it was hard to put into words...

What could it possibly have been?

He opened his mouth and closed it several times, at which point Maple started to visibly fidget. Probably she wanted to tell him, very badly, to just get on with it if he was going to say anything. She had just enough self restraint to hold herself back from doing that, but she wasn't going to have it for too much longer. And he was really testing her with this last little mannerism that he was doing right now.

Finally, one time he opened his mouth, it stuck. The words came slowly, but at last they did come out. "The thing--- the pony in the mist," he said. "She... looked like she was made of the stuff."

A hush fell over the entire circle--- for they had become a circle, in the intervening time. They were all standing around where Fluffmutter had entered and stopped to take a drink from his glass of watermelon juice, in what felt like ages ago.

The watermelon juice was still there too, refilled, but this time Fluffmutter hadn't touched it in the intervening time. Maybe he just wasn't thirsty anymore.

The rest of them had, in the meantime, gathered around him, forming a circle around him without really meaning to... Or without planning to, anyway. But it made sense. This was the most optimal formation for them all to stand in, if they were all here to hear Fluffmutter tell a story.

This way, they could all see his face without obstructing each other, which was of some importance when his voice had a tendency to be a bit toneless, and his delivery rather slow as he spoke.

"She... looked like she was made out of mist?" said Maple. She was the first to get over her incredulity. The rest of them were still stunned, or busy trying to think through the implications of what he had just said.

'Made out of the stuff'... It sounded like one of those nonsense statements that got told as riddles or something.

"She..." Fluffmutter paused again, and Lacuna could sort of see Maple tense over it. None of her impatience had abated in the meantime. But fortunately it didn't take nearly so long for Fluffmutter to speak up again this time. "I don't mean she was mist," he said. "We could touch her. She was solid. But she looked like the stuff. Black all over, and sparkles."
