Look After Yourself [P, Nyxia and I]

(Miriam Reference)

Miriam stared hard at her reflection in the mirror, and the scowl darkening her face.

“What the heck does he mean I 'need his protection’?” she groused, folding her arms tightly over her chest. “I can take care of myself.” When Raven had left that night, he’d specifically told her to stay indoors. “It’s too dangerous for you to go out at night; you’re still young and you’re weaker than most vampires your age. You need me to protect you. So just stay at home til I get back. It won‘t be more than a few days.” Yeah, that’s what he said, and while it did make a lot of sense in some aspects, Miriam was still a hurt that he thought she was so weak she needed him by her side constantly. He was always hovering, always saying those dreaded words ‘Let me do it,’ or ‘I’ll take care of this.’ She glowered at her reflection, and then lifted a hand and pointed ominously. “You know why he always tries to protect you? ‘Cuz you look like a delicate little flower, that’s why. Look at you! Your pretty little dress and long hair.”

Her gaze narrowed further. You need a change.” Slowly, her hand lowered and picked up the scissors lying innocently on the vanity. “Maybe if I…” She held them up, and took a lock of long, silken hair between her fingers. Closing her eyes, she set the scissors to it, and cut it off. An ominous ‘snip’ and the lock was gone, fluttering to the floor to lie in a lonely pile. Miriam tugged lightly on the now ridiculous short lock of hair, and with a determined scowl, she set to work on the rest. The scissors snipped and snapped and in no time, her hair was extremely short, no longer reaching the middle of her back. It curled and spiked up above her ears, and Miriam observed herself in the mirror with a smug grin. Pushing away form the vanity, she leapt to her feet and strode over to the closet, rifling through it’s contents until she found a dark shirt she hardly ever touched, and a pair of dark pants that looked nearly brand new. Grinning to herself, she pulled her dress over her head, and slipped into the clothes from her closet. She glanced at herself in the mirror; she looked darker, different. No longer the delicate little flower she was certain Raven always saw when he looked at her, but a stronger woman, one capable of taking care of herself.

“I don’t always need you to do everything for me,” she murmured, running her fingertips along the edge of the mirror. “Heaven knows I love you, you big idiot, but I can take care of myself too. And…and I’m going out tonight, whether you like it or not.” Since become a vampire, Miriam had only gone out with Raven. He always said she might attract too much attention, or she’d get into trouble, or she’d get hurt, and where she went, so did he. But tonight, she wanted to do something. Go for a walk, get some coffee (because she missed going out to cafes by herself from time to time) just…just do something! She stomped through the house, every movement quietly defiant of Raven’s orders. She knew he’d probably be angry when he got home (or if he ever found out) but Miriam had something to prove to him…and maybe, in a small way, to herself. “Sunny,” she called to the Lab Rattegan who was lounging around on the couch on a rather large pillow. He squeaked quietly, and lifted his head. “I’ll be back later. Don’t wait up.”

She giggled to herself as she pulled on a jacket and stepped out into the night. The cool, crisp night air pierced her already cold skin, and she breathed deeply, savoring the scents and sounds of the night. Her keen sense picked up the sounds of soft murmurings as couples walked through the park, or headed towards the café. For a moment, Miriam felt a pang of loneliness and longing for Raven so deep, she nearly doubled back and went home. Just the idea of disobeying her mate and maker made her stomach clench hard in anguish, but Miriam studiously ignored it. It was a good thing she wasn’t hungry, or that ache would’ve been ten times worse. She could always have gone to Astraea and Sole for some company; both were always happy to see her and spend time with her, but Miriam wanted a night out on her own. She was certain she could handle herself. Well, she was certain until she passed an alley she’d passed a thousand different time and a cold, clammy hand reached out and dragged her into it.

The scream died in her throat when she remembered what she was, and she rounded on her attacker with blood-red eyes and bared fangs, hissing furiously and clawing at the hand clamped firmly around her arm. What she faced, however, was not what she expected. Instead of a frightened human, she found herself staring up into the darkening eyes of another of her kind. And from his scent, he was much older than herself. “I suggest you let me go,” she intoned quietly, her voice dripping venom. “You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into.” The vampire smirked, baring equally sharp fangs down at her, and crooked one elegant eyebrow. Miriam couldn’t help but think his looks paled in comparison to Raven’s. “I don’t know,” the vampire mused. “From the smell of it, your maker hasn’t been around for a while, has he? What was his name? Raven Varro?”

Miriam’s eyes widened a fraction and she shuddered. If this man knew who Raven Varro was, then he should’ve released her by now. He was either unafraid of the powerful family, or he was ridiculously stupid. “Y-yes,” Miriam warbled, trying to keep her chin high. She dug her nails into the man’s hand, but he neither noticed nor made any indication that he felt it. “And when he gets back, he’ll tear you limb from limb if you hurt me.” The vampire chuckled darkly, shifting and adjusting his grip so he could sling an arm around her waist. “Oh, don’t mind that, I know very well what he could do. But by the time he returns, I’ll be long gone. Don’t worry,” he added at her shocked look. “I won’t hurt you…much. I just need a little fun tonight, and I think you can I could paint the town red, so to speak.” He laughed to himself, his grip tightening when she tried to pull away. “Come now, dear sweet girl, won’t you spend the evening with me?”

I love adventurous tales like that. That uplifting feeling that comes from seeing unknown lands and the knowledge that you came across—nothing can replace it! It opens a path from which self-confidence, experience, and important friendships—from the sharing of life or death situations—are born! But hearing it just isn’t the same. I want to create my own magnificent story!

A great adventure!

Re: Look After Yourself [P, Nyxia and I]

Postby Nyxia » 09/27/2011 6:56 PM

The crisp cool of the night washed over the world like a death maiden's kiss, blanketing the world with her net as she sought the souls she'd take tonight. A thought of little comfort to the male sitting in the lone alleyway, his silvery snow locks brushed lightly against his cheek as he laid face down a card atop a small cardboard box. Like his companion the man didn't need to breath, and thus had no pulse at all unless he felt the need to express his displeasure by blowing out a breath from between his teeth. He placed a second card on the makeshift table top and managed to blow out one such breath, and not at all for the first time tonight. "So what's going to happen old man?" He jeered turning a third card face up in front of himself, before beginning the pain staking task of laying out the other man's cards. "Someone going to mutter some blasphemous cry against Heilat. Or is this another waste." He grumbled softly, turning face up the others third card before he laid out two face up cards in the center.

The other man to which the young dealer referred to stood silently in the cool air, watching as the stars began to appear like holes punched in a deeply colored atmosphere above them. Despite himself the other man lingering in the alley that evening smiled softly, it wasn't something the card dealer would have seen or believed if he had. "Near, the purpose of us being here instead of at your mother's side, is to see if you have a preemptive bone in that entire body of yours." He kept his tone even and cool as he watched the world around them slowly turn from evening to night. To some extent the older male enjoyed tormenting the younger in this tireless quest meant only to annoy him further by now. Still as he watched from the corner of his eye at the cards being dealt he couldn't help but feel that he was doing less to annoy Lucina's son that he was just making his rump cold. Never the less Korrё kept his vigilant watch on the streets around their little nest from his perch atop a small stack of wooden skids and he knew Near was doing the same in his own way.

By the nightfall both men had settled themselves into an uneasy game of cards, waiting to see what Korrё's premonition would amount to this time. Near had crushed a laugh at the thought of the old man learning the game they were playing when they were joined in the alley by another of their kind, an unusual act indeed as most kept to their own. Shortly after the snorted cough erupted from his throat Near began twisted the leather sheath of his sword against his boots a sign to Korrё of the tension the other man felt, still the continued the game with Near dealing out two more cards ignoring the other nightkin. The vampire lingering at the edge of the alley obviously hadn't noticed them, or Near's barely suppressed aura which was earned him an unamused look from the older nightkin across the cardboard box table. It wasn't until the vampire at the other end dragged a woman off the street that the men even paid him any mind at all, with Near pulling his silver sword quietly from her cradle and bounding after the other nightkin. Korrё followed suit having reviled his aura but taken no threatening stance, their cards drifting to the ground like snow flakes on a calm breeze behind them.

Near reached them first, so silent that even the rats didn't notice him until he'd passed. Blood colored eyes ablaze as his grabbed the man's hand that was wrapped around Miriam's arm, twisting it until she was free before his pressed the flat of his sword against the vampire's throat with enough force to make the other's eyes bulge from their sockets slightly, his razor fangs bared in a sneer. "I don't think she likes you, man." He growled partly laughing. "And by looking at you I can see why." With his last comment the edges of the silver sword began to pulse a faint red light, the glow moving up his arm and spreading across his torso. The tension of his shoulders quaked in the glow as he held back from crushing the other vampire's throat before the woman. That would be another matter once Korrё had moved her away from him, since he could then let loose the rage building within him.

About the time Near had forced the release of Miriam's arm another cool hand had grabbed hold of her, though much more gently. Korrё turned her to face him instead of the violence Near was currently ramping up for behind her. "Come." He told her softly leading her out of the alleyway and into the doorway of a closed shop just a handful of feet from the battle. Secure and able to hear if Near found himself over run somehow, he focused on her with his almost icy cerulean eyes. He brought both her arms up level with his chest and began looking her over, "You don't seem injured, still are you alright miss?" His tone attempting to put her at ease with them, at least until one of the spider, called Spyridia's, crawled down from his hand onto hers. The little creature had no actual weight to its body, but the silky fur brushed lightly at her skin anyway as it moved to inspect this new being it's master was interacting with. Once satisfied she was no threat the little creature began to purr softly resting near her wrist, something Korrё was aware as he glanced down at it.

((Sorry this is so late,  . I'll be a lot more timely after this.))

Bottles smashed, I raised my hand
How can you all even stand?
And why is there joy in this poison? Oh
Faking smiles and confidence
Driving miles to capture this excitement
I can't take anymore

You're never gonna get it
I'm a hazard to myself
I'll break it to you easy
This is hell, this is hell
You're looking and whispering
You think I'm someone else
This is hell, yes
I am in hell

Miriam had opened her mouth to protest. She really had. In fact, she was considering biting the guy on the arm and just making a run for it. But she never actually got the chance. In the next heartbeat, the vampire’s painful grip on her arm had slackened and disappeared, and Miriam was faced with a strange man shoving her would-be attacker up against the wall, a very deadly looking knife flashing in the dark. Miriam took a step back, confused at the turn of events that had just befallen her, when another hand gripped her arm in the same place, and practically hauled her away from the scene in front of her. “What-?” she began, but the sentence died in her throat once she got a good whiff of the stranger’s scent; vampire. But…not normal vampire?

Miriam was confused, and for the first time that night, wished dearly that Raven was at her side. Maybe he’d know how to deal with this situation (or rather, it wouldn’t have happened in the first place) and he’d know what to make of the man now forcefully keeping Miriam from peeking over his shoulder. It wasn’t as if death bothered her (she’d died herself, after all), but the idea of the vampire who’d accosted her getting his head pulled off simply for an error in judgment didn’t sit well with her. She turned her clear, crystal blue gaze up tot eh man in front of her, holding her breath only briefly before she blew it out in one big puff of air. “Um, don’t hurt him, please. He’s just…misguided, I’m sure. I don’t think he deserves whatever your…friend is going to do. It looks like it would be rather…painful.” She swallowed down her fear once she realized that she was no longer faced with one vampire, but with three. Granted, she doubted the first would be any trouble now, but the second two disturbed her…and frightened her. She let the strange man lift her arms to inspect her, feeling a faint blush rise up into her cheeks, and the slight fear she felt turned momentarily to curiosity.

She observed him as he observed her; long, raven colored hair, and amazingly bright, pale blue eyes set into a pale, but handsome, angular face. He was most certainly one of her kind, but his scent was still…different. At his sudden question, Miriam found herself stumbling over her words, eyes casting carefully around to make sure they were alone on the street. “Well, no. I’m pretty durable, after all. I mean…well…” She tilted her head, as if suddenly wondering if he knew what she was the way she knew instinctually and by scent what he was. “Didn’t you know I was like you? I don’t exactly bruise anymore, you know, and-” She was cut off as something soft, silky, and definitely creepy crawled from his hands to hers. Miriam’s eyes widened, as would any sane woman who had a healthy fear of bugs, and she froze, staring carefully at the spider that was now crawling along her arm. When the little creature began to settle itself down near her wrist, making a strange sort of noise (was that spider…purring?) in content.

Miriam’s muscles locked, and she tore her gaze away from it, though her eyes darted to it occasionally as she spoke. “Spider. There’s a spider on my hand. I think it’s yours. Your spider. Is on. My hand. Did you know?” Her voice sounded oddly high-pitched and squeaky in her ears, and she realized she was afraid. She quickly cleared her throat, and tried very valiantly to ignore the little critter currently taking up residence on the side of her wrist. “U-um, I’m Miriam Varro. May I ask who you two are? And…uh…thanks for the help.” But I shouldn’t have needed it. Wasn’t that what this was for? To get out and take care of myself? What is wrong with me? Miriam scowled, frowning angrily at he feet like a scolded child, her brows drawn together. “I should go,” she said slowly. “And get back home before something else happens.” Her voice lowered to no more than a faint whisper. “I guess I really am too weak to look after myself.”

(No worries. Heehee, this is gonna be fun! <3)

Korrё merely smiled a bit at her sensing the fear drifting from her in flickers, and welcomed the fact that he'd fed earlier that evening. "I wouldn't worry yourself with that, my dear. I doubt Near will harm him too badly, he isn't on authority to do much more than frighten the boy." The last part really did make him chuckle to himself faintly, something that was probably driving Near half mad was his inability to do much in the way of damage. He could hear the ensuing struggle behind them, and Near's dark words as he gave chase to the fleeing vampire deeper into the alley. "Near gets a little...let's say upset when someone attempts to hold a woman against her will. Be she vampire or not." He raised an eyebrow to accent his point on the matter as he gave her one more look over for injuries, then nodded to himself seeming content with her state. "Durable...quite possible, but that doesn't mean much at your age I'm afraid. There are worse things than a few missing pints or bruises, my dear. Much worse things." The mention of age had him feeling a bit nostalgia for a few moments, clouding his eyes for a fraction of a second.

Her mention of his Spyridia snapped him very quickly from those thoughts, and he looked down at the little creature resting happily on her. Had he not lived as long as he had, Korrё would have been startled to see one resting on any person other than it's master. Instead his smile widened a bit, still keeping his fangs concealed from view behind his lips. "Ah, Feira. I believe your frightening our friend." He beckoned the Spyridia back to his arm, where she went back to resting on the cuff of his coat.Somewhere in the distance he could hear the footsteps coming back towards them, and within a few seconds Near rounded the corner and came up beside Korrё.

Near slowly moved up to lean on the wall at the edge of the doorway, blocking a section of the sidewalk with his body. "Lost em, slipped in with the rats." He answered Korrё's unspoken question, his voice carrying his annoyance. He took that moment after his half sentence to sling his sheathed sword over his shoulder and run a hand threw his hair. Having come in only at the tail end of their conversation Near smirked slightly, "Hey no sweat. We just love to help." He joked at her in softer tone, hoping to lighten the mood with both. "I'd be Nuada Fellshrone, Near to most, and guardian of the Ilztirahn manor." He gave a mocking half bow causing the buckles on his trench coat to jingle a bit, he then stood and smiled at her.His silvery hair pulled off to one side so he could see as he looked her over, assuming the older vampire had already checked her for injuries"So,what was that all about doll?"

Hearing Near's comments caused Korrё to put an elbow in the younger man's ribs, "Your mother raised you better than that. She's a lady, not one of those...things your brother picks up." He scolded not looking over to Near who was busy hamming up his "injury" with a few well placed grumbles and rubbing the abused section of his side. "And I am Korrё Xaϯmryn, lord of the Majitria. Its a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miriam Varro. These four Spyridia's are my ever constant companions; Feira, whom you just met, Anin, Konu, and there's Raxiu who is a bit more...hostile towards strangers." At his introduction the two spider like creatures resting on his coat cuffs raised up, one squeaked a bit like a mouse would the other purred once more; one on his tie cooed a small greeting, and the final hissed before disappearing behind the collar of his coat, each with a faint glow around them. "They aren't actually spiders, their spirits who have chosen to remain in this world after their bodies had passed." He explained to his slowly, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. Then quirked a slender eyebrow to her whispered words, knowing Near had likely caught them as well. "Your maker hasn't taught you?" He inquire gingerly, his eyes softening a bit more.

Near merely shook his head, a lazy but amused smile growing as he listened to the older vampire speak. "Old man, you really need to get with the times." He chaffed at the other male, trying his hardest not to laugh when a half glare was tossed back at him for his efforts. "Those dang things are exactly why mum doesn't think you'll ever find a doll." He continued heckling Korrё for a moment more adding for fun, "A Prořok with spirits hanging around..." He snorted a laugh for a moment more before sobering at the older male's questioning of the woman there, she was rather young to be wandering without a sire or dark parent close by. "So is that what all that was about?" Near gestured over his shoulder towards the alley with a nod of his head, never taking his blood ruby eyes off her. He then tsked softly to himself and shook his head, the smile dying away from his lips.

Korrё however saw no reason to pity the poor girl or make too much a deal of the more minor issue of her self defenses. "I think Near and I might be able to lend ourselves to teach you, if you would like." He lightly offered, pointedly ignoring the grumble from the man to his right who muttered something about women wandering about, and there not being enough knights in armor for such feats. "He's really better behaved than this, I promise." Korrё tacked in hoping to make her feel better about the whole thing. Without another word he tucked his arm behind her upper back with the intent of herding her towards a small cafe not far from their location which catered to their kind. Giving Near time to accept the fact and fall in step flanking the older vampire and Miriam on their way.

Miriam didn’t look too convinced that the stranger wouldn’t harm the rogue vampire. Not that she was too overly concerned with his welfare, but she didn’t exactly want blood indirectly on her hands. She stared up at the older vampire with something akin to surprise. “My age…?” she repeated, looking faintly offended. “What’s that supposed to mean? I’ll have you know, I’m perfectly-” She snapped her jaw shut the moment the little spider started crawling off her wrist and back onto it’s host. She shuddered imperceptibly, trying very hard to keep it from showing on her face that she was…well, a bit disgusted by the spiders. That was pretty normal though, especially for women like her. It didn’t matter if they weren’t actual spiders; they still looked like them to her. She shuddered again, and quickly focused her gaze on the silver haired man who’d stepped from the shadows. Raven had warned her, like a child, not to talk to strangers; especially if those strangers had fangs and could turn her to dust in five seconds flat.

These two didn’t seem all that bad, but then Miriam’s experience with others of her kind had been nothing but unpleasant, save for Raven and his family. She didn’t think she could outrun them, and the imperceptibly strong grip he had on her arm kept her from fleeing anyway. Gritting her teeth against the urge to bite and run as she’d planned to do with the first interloper, Miriam forced her face into a neutrally polite position. “Nice to meet you, Near. I do appreciate your help.” Her teeth ground together when he called her ‘doll,’ and she nearly had to bite her tongue to keep herself from retorting. Sexist pig. At least the dark haired man had enough manners and sense to call her by her name. “Ah, a pleasure to meet you as well…Korrё, was it?” Everything else he said after his title went way over Miriam’s head. What was a ‘Majitria’? And then the spiders again. Miriam swallowed soundlessly and stared at them. They were cute, she’d have to admit, but they still creeper her out. “Uh. Okay. Nice to meet you…Um…collective Spyridia spider spirit people…”

His next, quiet question had her head jerking up to fix him with a baleful glare. “Raven has taught me plenty,” she protested, feeling the first inkling of anger and protectiveness surging through her at the imagined slight against her maker and mate. Not really; Raven had taught her enough to satisfy him that she knew how to 'run away' if she was attacked. “He-he just says I’m not strong enough to…look after myself. And…He always goes with me wherever I go, so it’s not like I really need to learn-” She cut herself off there, shutting her mouth with a click. She wasn’t sure she needed to reveal that particular information; telling two vampires she couldn’t defend herself as well as she should be able to was not something that should ever be common knowledge. She jerked her head towards Near, shooting him an annoyed, and half frightened look, wondering if perhaps these vampires could read minds. They weren’t like normal vampires, so who was to say what kinds of abilities they had. “I-I just wanted to go for a walk and…it was a stupid idea. It’s what got me into this entire big, huge, debacle of a mess in the first place!”

Deciding to go for a walk at night was exactly what had turned her into a vampire in the first place. She was either really stupid, or history actually did repeat itself. “I-I know how to defend myself!” she protested mildly, though even as she said it, the words sounded weak and untruthful even to her ears. And was her voice a bit more high pitched than normal? Probably, with her luck. The first man tucked his arm behind her, the strength and power she could feel coiled tightly within him making it apparent that even if she did run, she probably wouldn’t get far; the idea of breaking off his arm, or trying to bite it and scamper up a tree or something didn’t appeal to her either. Her eyes darted straight ahead, body stiff and rigid as she allowed herself to be swept towards and into the café, one she’d never been to, nor even knew existed. Raven didn’t exactly like to go out much, and when he did, it was always to places like parks, the beach at night, lakes, and quiet, peaceful places where there were no others around. “Wait, I should…Okay, we’re going inside,” she said faintly, the protest dying as they stepped through the door. “Listen, thanks for helping, but I can take care of myself. Really. He, uh, just caught me by surprise.” It sounded like a lie, and a bad one, even to her own ears. “B-besides, my mate wouldn’t want me hanging around a place like this. He says they’re…” She took a careful look around, the soft, sweet scent of the café compelling her to shut her mouth and soak in the smells and the sights. She turned to glance sheepishly at Korrё over her shoulder, sounding embarrassed when she spoke. “Well…I could stay for a little bit, I guess…”

Korrё couldn't help but chuckle lightly as they entered the cafe, a place both men were familiar with. Something noted when the woman behind the counter smiled and waved at them and gestured to a table next to the massive windows, looking out on a small closed in garden. He continued to lead Miriam towards the table, soundlessly crossing the wooden floors. "Go ahead and tell Near what you'd-" He stopped in mid-sentence when he realized that Near was already at the counter, flirting with the other vampire who was rolling her eyes at him. "That boy..." Korrё grumbled in a whisper that could or could not have been as soft as the light breeze. He shook his head and turned his full attention back to Miriam and cleared his throat in order to refocus his attention. "Well, would you like to sit in here or would you rather sit in the garden?" He questioned, remembering that in the modern era women valued their rights more than in his time. Still he pulled out a chair at the dark cherry wood table in case she wished to sit, aware of how uneasy she was with them. Giving her the option to sit and chat or walk away, Korrё sat down across from the chair he'd pulled out. "I assure you, my dear. We mean no harm to you, nor disrespect for your sire." He began evenly, as Anin and Konu scampered down to begin shifting through the dust on the low window sill. He chose to ignore them and leave them to whatever mischief the pair could get into, folding his hands he set them on the table willing to give Near some time to be rejected in. "But in light of this evening, I feel you are the reason we were in the alley to begin with." A small fact he rarely confided to anyone outside his small circles.

Upon entering the cafe, Near had immediately spotted an old flame of his. With a coy smile on his lips the confidence returned to his step and he quickly beelined straight for her, "Hey Beraie!" He made a low whistle to catch her attention as he approached the counter and then leaned over it, winking at her. The woman, a small red head with sparkling amber eyes glared back at him; but didn't stop the frappe she was making. "What do you want Near?" Her voice was a pleasant work tone. He was unfazed as she went about her work, looking her over. "I wanted to see you again, you know. Maybe somewhere outside of here." He leaned a bit further on the counter, really laying on his act of tough. That caught the woman's attention, and a scowl laced her pretty face as she looked to him. "Can it Near, or else you'll be wearing your coffee again." She warned sending him back from the counter a bit, which made her smile. Grumbling he ran his hand threw his hair again and sighed, "Yea yea, I remember. Give me a Irish coffee would ya, doll." The red head woman growled a rather loud insult for a vampire at his back as he turned away from her. His blood eyes scanning the bamboo and dark oak room which served as a tea room and cafe to vampires, finding Korrё and Miriam.

Continuing to ignore both Near, and his now transforming Spyridia's who looked more like palm size kittens batting at one another in the window sill, Korrё continued to watch her where she stood. "I'm sure if your out here wandering the streets alone, and managing to provoke almost as much trouble as Near and his brother, that your sire wouldn't be offended at you accepting a bit of help." He offered softly, sure by then that she was the same woman felt the premonition of. He then waited, listening to Near's boots scuff at the floor as he made his way towards the pair. "If your quite done harassing poor miss Rleza, I think the miss Varro would like something." He told Near in a cool voice without looking back at the young man, his amused smile only visible to Miriam.

Bottles smashed, I raised my hand
How can you all even stand?
And why is there joy in this poison? Oh
Faking smiles and confidence
Driving miles to capture this excitement
I can't take anymore

You're never gonna get it
I'm a hazard to myself
I'll break it to you easy
This is hell, this is hell
You're looking and whispering
You think I'm someone else
This is hell, yes
I am in hell

Re: Look After Yourself [P, Nyxia and I]

Miriam followed Korrё's gaze to where Near had been seconds ago, only to find he was gone. Miriam frowned; the man was beginning to seem more and more like Rai at every turn. Pretty soon she’d be slapping his hands away from her bottom and telling him to get out of her house. Well, maybe not, but he still reminded her of Rai. The scraping of a chair across the floor quickly drew her attention, and Miriam carefully eased down into it, looking faintly uncomfortable. “Uh, here’s fine,” she muttered, glancing around suspiciously. There were a good number of her kind loitering around the café, and Miriam wondered silently how they managed to get along. She didn’t think vampires could act like normal people, at least, none of the ones she’d met. But they all seemed at ease, laughing, joking, talking and not trying to rip someone’s throat out.

She turned to fix Korrё with a confused stare. “What exactly is this place?” Her eyes darted to the little spiders that scampered from his body onto the windowsill, but she quickly tore her daze away, trying to ignore them as best she could. “And what do you mean ‘I was the reason?’ You couldn’t have possibly known I would get pulled into that alley. And you couldn’t possibly have been waiting for me to walk by.” She folded her arms over her chest, leaning back in her chair and glaring at him across the table. As she spoke, the spiders began to take the shape of kittens, and Miriam did a double take when she noticed them playing on the windowsill. “What the-?”

She peered at them closely, reaching out as if to touch one, before she suddenly retracted her hand. Whatever those things were, she wasn’t sure she really wanted to touch one again. She sighed and rolled her gaze back to Korrё. “Yes, well, you don’t exactly know Raven, do you? He’s a bit possessive when it comes to me. Stifling even. But he only does it out of love,” she amended quickly. It was true. Raven only acted the way he did because he was young, in love, and terrified of losing her. She felt the same way about him, but she knew he could take care of himself. Miriam’s gaze lifted as Near strolled back over, a faint frown on her face.

“No, uh, thanks.  I wouldn’t even know what to get and I didn’t bring any money. It’s fine.” She smiled slowly, and waved them off. “Listen…Um…I’m flattered by your offer to help me, but what could you possibly teach me that Raven already hasn’t? I mean, you seem different but…I’m just not sure how. Besides, I don’t want to inconvenience you or take up any of your time, really.”

Amused at her wandering gaze of the place, Korrё gave it a once over glance as well. "This is the Silver Lily, a very well kept cafe and bar. Your surprised that we nightkin can behave, why is that? Do you not know that many are still every bit as human as they were when they died?" He questions reading the doubt and surprise in her aura. "Beraie and Sazurial allow for little in the way of foolishness, a reason Near is to this day on her bad side." He continued without much pause, pushing off her confusion like it was nothing more than a moment of memory lapse on her part. "I mean that I am one of the rare in our species, known simply as a Prořok by most. I feel when the threads of fate turn and tug, just as I did tonight." He waved his hand to Near, signalling him to sit quietly while they spoke then nodded to her. "Yes, you are correct. I had no way of knowing it would be you who appeared, or that you would find danger there. I merely knew that the fates saw fit to tangle another being in my web."

Having been rebuked and sent back to the table with his tail between his legs, metaphorically that is was a bit cross at being treated more like a child with Korrё's hand gestures. But to be on the safe side and not provoke anything more he dropped his tough act and pulled up a chair from another table, turning it so he sat straddling the heavy oak with his arms resting on the back at the end of the table the pair was sharing. The music moved to something more like a soft oriental sound with rain drops and a soft flute playing, "No, its very likely neither of us know much about your maker. In truth I've felt we should meet with the local vampires around these parts to learn about them." He answered before Korrё had the chance to speak much more, hating to be left out of the conversation. He then rested his head on his folded arms and the chair's back, watching her with more of a contemplative stare than what he'd first had. "Right now though, I don't seem to think your doing terribly well looking after yourself." He addressed in an even tone, absentmindedly scuffing the toe of his left boot on the polished floor. "And I can reason that it would take a lot off his mind if you could look after yourself, instead of being at such risk again." That being all he planned to say on the matter, Near raised his head just as a waitress came from a back room covered by a black satin curtain with his drink and a menu of what they served.

When the waitress set the menu on the table, Korrё picked it up and handed it off to Miriam, "Don't worry yourself, it can be put on Lucina's tab." His eyes catching on the young woman setting a drink in front of Near. "I'll have a jasmine green tea, if you would." He then gestured over to Miriam for her to give the woman some sort of an order as well. "It isn't about what we gain, my dear. Its about many other things, things that will become evident someday down the road from here. And really you are no inconvenience to us, as I said we were out there because of you I believe. Thus we have nothing better to do this eve." Before he could answer her further though there was a bit of a commotion over Miriam's shoulder that followed the soft tinkling of the bells above the door, two mortal women ducking in from a bar down the block.

Near took Korrё's pause in the conversation at the women as an opening, taking from his belt a small silver dagger which he set on the table hilt first before her. "I personally can teach you a bit about weapons and handling them, as well as a bit of combat techniques." He offered as he slipped his hand away from the dagger and picked up the handle of his cup to take a long drink of the liquor coffee blend, relaxing his shoulders in the warmth. That sweet taste seem to do little in the way of his constant scuffing of his boot on the floor or the bounce in his left leg that looked more like a tick than a habit of relaxation. Upon setting his cup back on the table with a thunk sound he continued, "And the old man can teach a lot in the way of sensing things before you see them, and if you have any extra power he can help you control and focus it. He's also pretty good with helping keep others out of your thoughts and protecting your aura from his kind." He joked jabbing a thumb in Korrё's direction, who'd returned to the conversation when Beraie had seen to the women. "But if you don't want the help, at least take that with you. It might do you some good." His face becoming a bit more serious as he drained the cup of its contents and set it back down. "I'd hate to see something happen to you." He whispered under his breath.

Miriam looked distinctly uncomfortable at Korrё’s quiet question. She shifted in her seat, her gaze instinctively falling from his to bore holes into the table. “Not any of the ones I’ve come across. Raven and his family are nice, but…the whole reason I am what I am is because I was…I was attacked by a vampire. He never got the chance to turn me fully; I was…stuck in between the worlds. I couldn’t be human, and I wasn’t yet vampire. Raven had no choice but to turn me. After that, he warned me to stay away from our kind unless he was there, so I assumed they were all…Well, then tonight and…You two are honestly the first of my kind I can honestly say didn’t try to…attack me in some way.” She traced patterns along the tabletop, still looking somewhat uncomfortable. “I’ve never heard of a Prořok. I didn’t know there were variations of vampires…”

Sighing, Miriam slumped down in her chair, looking morose and a bit put-out by the way the conversation was beginning to go. “I doubt you’d have met Raven anyways. He’s antisocial, at the best of times. His family don’t like to involve themselves in local…er…politics unless there’s trouble in their territory. Raven would rather he and I keep to ourselves, and I’m okay with that. I just like to get out once in a while on my own…and…and I’m doing an okay job looking after myself!” she suddenly protested, rising up in her seat indignantly, then slumping down with a groan. “All right, so, maybe not. And I think Raven would appreciate it, although he’d probably get all butt-hurt about me being taught by guys. As long as I can honestly tell him neither of you ever tried to cop a feel, he’d probably be okay with it,” she mused, looking faintly tickled by her own sentence.

It was rather funny that Raven was so damn protective, in a weird and un-funny sort of way. Miriam glance dup as the menu was pushed her way, and picked it up, scanning it as fast as she could. “Maple tea, if you don‘t mind,” she said faintly, folding the menu and handing it to the waitress. She sighed in resignation, though it didn’t sound as upset as it could have. The idea of learning to defend herself was rather…well, she rather liked it. She stared quietly down at the dagger laid before her, watching as Near’s hand glided away from it. She considered for a brief moment, just getting up and walking away. Raven would’ve advised it. But Miriam didn’t always have to do what Raven wanted, and now was the prime example. She wanted something for herself. “I-I do have…a power. But…I haven’t used it since I became…a vampire,” Miriam began haltingly, unsure as to whether she should reveal it.

“I have the ability to make people around me very, very happy. They won’t understand why, but…well, they’ll just be happy. No arguments, no bloodshed, no anger, nothing. Just happiness. It’s like…being filled with light, I’m told. I used to be unable to control it when I was little, so it just randomly happened. But as I got older, I learned how to...use it to my advantage, I guess you could say, except in dire situations. I just can't think straight enough to use it when something terrible is happening. I know there's more to it, but I can't figure out what, and I'm...almost afraid to use it. I haven’t tried it since I was turned because I was terrified that it had become damaged or warped and instead of happiness it would fill others with…something bad.” She winced faintly, looking up at the two men in some semblance of shame. “Maybe help would be a good idea…and greatly appreciated. If you’re certain it’s not too much trouble.”
