The Glass Library [P, sarasweet1]

Postby Indigo » 12/19/2013 1:43 AM

The building itself was hidden behind a tall hedge with carefully squared-off corners, although you could see a good bit of the roof from a long way off. If you went up the path you would find a wooden gate in the hedge, usually, with a sign above it reading The Glass Library in painstakingly handpainted letters. The sign remained even in the absence of the gate, which was a good thing today, since the hedge was being difficult and had apparently decided only to let certain people in.

Within the bounds of the hedge was a one-story red-brick house with a sloping roof and large windows, surrounded by a well-maintained vegetable garden and, incongruously, a white picket fence. The path continued through the gate and the middle of the garden and ended at the steps to the red house's front door, possessed of a knocker in the shape of a Grondalith's head. This part of the building appeared entirely ordinary, because it was.

Around the back of the house, however, an intrepid explorer might see a large glass box looking something like a greenhouse. You wouldn't be able to see inside, as the walls were hung with tapestries and curtains to give some semblance of privacy. There was also no door.

Inside the house, chaos reigned.

Dagmar perched at the top of a ladder, propped up against one of the many bookshelves, and ran a pointed paw along the spines, looking for a particular title. She appeared oblivious to what was happening below her, but when one of the whirling multicolored shapes bumped the bottom of her ladder she said "Careful, Virgil. If I fell on you we might never find out what's causing all this mess."

"I'm doing my best!" Virgil snapped, before returning to his task: chasing down and trapping the strange creatures that were loose in their house. Amos had been poking around the shelves last night, including a number of books he'd lugged over from the library proper, and therein lay the problem. Almost all of the books had been left open overnight, and come morning they had found themselves beseiged with miniature Talis in colors neither of them had ever heard of, who were interested in nothing but playing tag and tearing apart anything left on the floor with no concern for what they damaged.

Amos seemed to have wisely shut his book, or else the Talis had knocked it off its stand, leaving Dagmar and Virgil to deal with the problem themselves. So far they were stumped. All the books from last night were closed, even the ones they were sure were entirely mundane, yet the Talis remained. Now Dagmar was looking for something else that might refer to them, so they might be removed, while Virgil tried to pen them in.

It was a pity, he thought, that Rhonda had gone into town today.

From the outside the building looked entirely normal, well maybe not normal but it looked like nothing crazy was going on. Ongi only flittered above the hedge for a second, he wanted to get a good look at what was behind the hedge before he tried going in. paranoid maybe, but in his line of work paranoid was as natural as breathing. Today was his day off but instead of taking inventory at his own home he had been asked to come to this place. Not by its inhabitants no he had never even seen the place before, but apparently they sold things he created. Not him personally but they sold enchanted items and things like that. He had decided to check it out and hoped they might have something of actual use. Far too often he entered a shop and it turned out to be an absolute waste of time.

The red brick house was quiet from the outside, it almost looked like there was no one home but Ongi’s sharp hearing could pick up faint noise coming from inside. He couldn’t make out the words but the sound was there. Walking down the path a garden sprawled around him though he didn’t take any time to examine it. The once over of the property had been enough for him. The path ended at the door and he took a moment to collect himself before knocking. “Good gods let there be someone normal inside.” He muttered to himself, he was in a weird mood. He wasn’t in a sour mood but he wasn’t about to go on without judgment. he glanced behind him to make sure no one was following him and took this time to look for the fastest escape route.

The knock came just as Virgil managed to tackle the leader of the group, and startled him so that he almost let it go again. Over the sound of confused, high-pitched yapping he shouted, "Can you get that?"

Dagmar nodded, though he couldn't see her, and pushed the book she'd been examining back into place on the shelf before scrambling down the ladder. She turned the lower doorknob and pulled open the door.

"Ah!" She'd been expecting Rhonda, returned early from town and with hands too full to dig out her keys. Certainly not a Quiksylph. It took her a few seconds to recover her composure. "Oh, hello. The museum is closed today--" Not technically true but she really wasn't prepared to give a tour at the moment, and there was a risk of the Talis getting in and destroying something. "--but, ah, if you want me to let you into the library I can, we only ask that you don't remove any books from it without telling anyone as it may cause some difficulty...will you excuse me for a moment?" She grinned unsettlingly and slammed the door.

"Virgil? What are you doing?" When she turned around he was lying on top of the largest of the Talis, with three claws each pinning a different one and a fifth caught with his tail. The free claw was making gouges in the floor as he tried to anchor himself against the creatures' struggles.

"Um..."

"Never mind. Look, can you get them under the couch or something? I really can't have them running into me while I'm talking to a guest." She turned around and opened the door again.

"Terribly sorry about that," she said. "What was I saying? Ah, yes, it may cause some difficulty for the library's proper functioning if books are removed without the right documentation."

The door opened after only a few moments but Ongi had already grown impatient. A startled looking woman had opened the door. When the woman started talking about a museum he started to think that maybe he had the wrong place. To make things worse the moment he opened his mouth to speak she slammed the door on him. He could hear talking from the inside. Ongi gave the door a rather inappropriate gesture with his hand. “Rude.” He mumbled. He almost turned to leave when the door re-opened. The woman was saying about taking library books and proper documentation. “Eh, I was told you had enchanted items, or maybe a book on them?” his statement sure sounded like a question but Ongi wasn’t exactly sure if he wanted to stay or how he should react to having a door slam in  his face. Not that this was the first time, but the other times had been under completely different contexts.

"Oh! I see," said Dagmar. "Well, you're not far wrong, but I'm afraid this isn't exactly the kind of place you were looking for.  We do have enchanted items, which are kept in the museum, and that is closed right now, as I said. Although I might be able to get you in anyway, depending on your reasons for coming here. We also have some books on enchantment, yes, although in fact most of are books are enchanted themselves. It's a little complicated to explain sometimes. At any rate, I can get you a tour of the museum, probably. One moment."

This time she didn't actually close the door, just turned around and went back over to Virgil, still clinging to the Talis. To both of their surprise, when she picked him up the creatures he'd been holding down vanished completely. She had no doubt they'd be back sooner or later, but now was not the time to worry about such things.

She brought Virgil back to the door and held him out. "This is Virgil. Say hello, Virgil." He muttered something. "He knows just about all there is to know about the things we have here without being confusing about it, is portable, and cannot lie to you. Not that I expect you would think he would, but he is in fact the spirit of a magic mirror and entirely incapable of lying. Sound all right to you?"

The woman was talking so fast he could hardly get a word in… he wasn’t exactly sure why he had come here. of course he was always looking for enchanted items, but he was in the buying and selling business. Enchanted books were another thing too. If he could get his hands on one he would be a very happy man. Either he didn’t get the feeling he would be getting his hands on anything.

The woman walked away from the door and he was glad that she didn’t shut it in his face again. He still didn’t walk inside though. He felt it would be rude of him to just barge in without being invited.  There was some commotion and from what he could see there was another who was struggling to hold down something, or somethings? Either way, once the woman picked him up the thing he had been holding vanished.

She came back holding him and Ongi tilted his head slightly. She explained that he was the embodiment of a mirror or something. Honestly he hadn’t been listening all that much. “It’ll be fine so long as I don’t have to carry him around.” Ongi replied his eyes narrowed. He was relieved that he would be able to explore the place but he didn’t want to have to do any extra work.
