The Sandstorm & The Dog Park

[*Note: This is a fanfiction type Rp, to explain how he ended up in Evelon. This all takes place during The Sandstorm Pt 1 for anyone who is curious]

He'd gone through the vortex, the one that drew him almost as if it had called to him in the sweetest of voices. Its colors had pulled at something deep inside of him, and so he had left his studio only for a moment to see what lay on the other side. Now Cecil found himself standing in a slightly overgrown area, that strangely looked like a park. Behind him the swirls of darkness and indigo shrank further and further back in the evening light, before vanishing into the tree completely. He had promised not to be long, that was the last thing he had said as he'd left his booth. Now he didn't know where he was, or even how to return. Here, where ever here was, was silent and still. The sun would set in a few hours it seemed, but nothing moved around him. For a moment Cecil wondered if this was some strange hallucination, if staring at the vortex had caused him to imagine this place.

Bottles smashed, I raised my hand
How can you all even stand?
And why is there joy in this poison? Oh
Faking smiles and confidence
Driving miles to capture this excitement
I can't take anymore

You're never gonna get it
I'm a hazard to myself
I'll break it to you easy
This is hell, this is hell
You're looking and whispering
You think I'm someone else
This is hell, yes
I am in hell

For the barest moment he hoped he would open his eyes and find himself still sitting behind his familiar desk, about to go on the air and bring the news to his community. Standing as still as the world around him Cecil blinked once, then again slowly, but it didn't change. He was still standing in this place, unsure of what had happened. As he began to accept that this was real the world around him began to move, a breeze danced through the leaves of the tree above him. Faintly he could hear the sound of children laughing, but it sounded so far away that Cecil wondered if they were real. Turning back he looked at the spot the vortex had once been at, and knew deep down that it was gone for good. Would they miss him? It wasn't a question he would normally have asked himself, but considering the panic of the sandstorm he had to wonder if anyone would even notice his absence from the radio booth. That was, it seemed, what snapped the world back to its normal. Suddenly the sounds of children were so close he couldn't mistake the sound, and adult voices flittered in among the children's.

Standing there Cecil knew he had to go and figure out where he was, and at the same time he didn't want to leave in case the vortex returned. It wasn't likely that it would come back, even less likely that it would take him home. Resigned he turned back towards the sound of voices, and children playing and began to walk out of the overgrown path that lead to the heart of the park. Just as he found the stone pathway that lead back towards the center of this place he froze, terror pumping through his veins at the sight of a massive twisting statue just feet from him. That vortex had taken him into the dog park, something so terrible and horrifying that Cecil was at a lose for words. Staring he noted several small children playing near the bottom of this statue, the one that looked so much like the brownstone spire that stood in the dog park. The terror he felt freezing him in place wasn't enough to keep him from starting towards the children, intent to warn them and hopefully send them running for their lives when their parents came down to get them.

It was strange, what had happened that people were roaming in the dog park? It was strictly forbidden by the city council for anyone to be in the dog park. Cecil glanced at all the people as he slowly started down the stone pathway, picnics were going and children were playing on standard playground equipment like it was perfectly okay. Despite how hard he searched Cecil couldn't find a single hooded figure anyway in the park, which was unbelievably strange. Sure no one knew what the hooded figures where, and no one asked questions like that anyway. Still he thought he should have seen at least one plucking a plump children from his place in the sand, and spirit them away. Searching the area Cecil realized that nothing seemed dangerous here, despite the fact that this place was suppose to be overlooked in the day-to-day of citizens lives.

There were even dogs! In the dog park! Cecil nearly died of shock and horror at the sight of the strange canine looking creatures which roamed freely through out the picnic area of the park. He had to find his way out of here, his single thought being a desperate need to return to his studio and warn the citizens of this city that they were in direct violation of the city council's stand. Stuffing his hands in his pockets Cecil hurried to figure out which way lead out of this place, only to come face to face with an entirely new shock. As he rounded a group of benches Cecil found himself staring directly into the peach-pink eyes of a strange woman, taking a step back he found that she also had small wings from her upper back. Stunned all he could do was try to understand this strange woman, who smiled kindly at him in return. "You look lost, dear fellow. Are you?" Her voice reminded him of soft small chimes in a desert breeze.

He didn't even realize he'd nodded his head, but the woman had noticed. A more sympathetic smile appeared on her lips as she looked behind him once to see her own daughter was doing fine before worrying more about him. "I see. Well I don't know this town well myself, but I might be able to help you anyway." She told him as she lead him to a bench so he could sit. Cecil didn't know what to do, but he'd never once seen someone like her before. "Terrace Park can be a little confusing at first, Medicai city is worse though." The woman shook her head and laughed a little, "At least in the park there is little steel and cement." He was baffled, worse he wasn't even able to process much of what she was saying to him after that. He'd never heard of either place, that didn't mean a whole lot but still he thought he should remember if he'd heard of them. It seemed the woman had read the expression he wore, as she stopped and watched him for a moment. "Oh, dear. I guess your not from here at all then, either." She sighed, frowning at nothing he could see before turning back to him. "Well, bugger. How about you tell me where you're trying to go, and I'll see what I can do?"

When she asked all of Cecil's energy went into remembering what was happening, "Nightvale, I need to go to Nightvale." He told her in a calm tone, calmer than he felt anyway. He was unable to put what he felt into words, he couldn't believe he was somewhere other than his beloved home. If he hadn't seen that vortex with his own eyes, he would have thought this to be some hoax or joke. Nothing was alright, but it didn't change the fact that he'd just need a bus ticket or something to make it right. At least that was the lines along which he thoughts were running, until the woman cleared her throat that was.

She was sitting there looking at him with the most perplexed look Cecil had ever seen, her head tipping to the side then back again. "Night...vale? I've never heard of it, though to be entirely honest many who find themselves here come from places I've never heard of." She gave him a slight shrug before looking back over to her daughter, a motion which Cecil followed to see what she was looking at. "I'm afraid I don't know how you'll go back. How did you come here?" She meant well, he knew that somewhere deep down, that she just wanted to help. It didn't help when she said "here" like it was some other place.

How had he come here?! Had she not seen the vortex in the woods? Its darkness should have raised a few eyebrows, not to mention the whole 'We come in twos, kill your double.' warning that had been issued just before the sandstorm. "The vortex, the one in the woods back there..." As he pointed behind himself he saw the woman not following his hand, but instead giving him a sad look. "Where is here? Exactly." He was still calm but that was becoming harder to maintain as this event had rattled him some, worse than the day studio management had left their office had. He hoped she would say something that made sense, like Chicago or even Nulogorsk those would have at least given him a sense that he would be okay.

That hope vanished when the woman shook her head slowly, not losing the look of sorrow. "This place, well its natives, call it Evelon. I think its some sort of cross roads of worlds, seeing as how we're from Waterdeep in the world of Abeir-Toril." His head spun as she spoke, he had to be dreaming. There was no way this could be real, it wasn't possible. "Lady Kertamah might know some way to help you." She seemed to brighten as she spoke, not that it made him feel any better or did he understand what she was talking about. "She too came from Waterdeep, but her magic is strong and if she doesn't know then the Blackstaff spirits might have an idea or two." She was nearly clapping at her excitement. The she opened up her hand to the sky, and a rose colored flash of light popped from her palm. "When the Lady's guard shows up, he'll take you to her."

Unsure of whether he wanted to go anyway with a stranger, but at the same time he had to find out if there was some way to go back. Patting down his pants pockets before realizing that he left his cell phone on his desk, Cecil let his shoulders slump down a little. No one would know what had happened to him, they had no idea that he was gone possibly for good. Watching the people who gathered in different areas he could see, Cecil felt the weight of the entire experience on his shoulders.  It was slowly sinking in, he wouldn't see his beloved Nightvale again, nor Carlos with his perfect hair. It was a true disaster if one had ever been seen before, and just when he'd been in his prime too.
