"I don't think that it will be such a big job, but you never know." He really knew little about plumbing aside from the basics, so he could only hope. Not that it would be terrible to have them around, but he didn't want to interrupt their routine. It was important for the kids at least, to feel safe. It was hard to feel safe in such a new environment, especially an unfamiliar one.

"It's bound to be amazing, your cooking always is." Itzal smiled at her as she brought over the bowl, carefully unwrapping his silverware and lightly stirring the ingredients in the bowl. Merely to cool them down a little, though he took a few bites as it was still hot. It was good, and lived up to every expectation he could imagine. There was a little frown though, as she chose her words. He knew she'd been hurt before...

"Did you not think I was coming back?" He seemed a little hurt by even the thought. He'd made a promise, to her and the kids, that once his pseudo-tour was over he'd be back. He owned a home here, and deep down? He'd never leave. Not knowing Kasari was alone.

Kasari shifted uncomfortably as the subject lingered on his returning to town. Of course she wanted to tell him that she knew he was coming back. She wanted to believe that he would have always held to that promise no matter what. But she couldn't afford to think like that anymore. Not when there were more hearts than her own to guard.

"Itzal..." she began, putting her fork down on the plate to turn and fully look at him. She was fidgeting, obviously nervous about the words that were going to follow. "You know...you know I can't keep making those promises to the kids and bringing their hopes up when I stopped getting letters. Milo is too young to know his dad isn't around but Alana...alana knows it. She knows her dad left, she knows Milo's dad left. I can't keep letting her heart get broken by men I let into my life. No matter how well-meaning they start out. I have to protect their hearts as well as mine."

She looked at him with a sad smile, tears brimming her eyes again. "So when I say I'm glad you came back, please take that as a compliment. We've met too many who wouldn't have."
"I have been hidden, scorned, adored, worshiped, forsaken, coveted and banished more times than I care to count. But the one thing all those experiences cannot steal from me is the gentle soul I was born with, the kind heart I have molded, and the bright ideals for the future that have lit my way through the darkness of the past."

Though he let her say her peace Itzal reached over to take her hand softly in his own, stroking his fingertips against her palm. He had no delusions about their relationship. They were friends, and unless he could settle down here, there was no chance Kasari would let him closer. He could love her like this though. For now, from afar, and just try to be there for her.

"I'm sorry that my letters were delayed, Kasari. I truly am. But please, believe me when I say that this is home. I will always come back. I may be gone a while, but it's not forever. I don't want to intrude on your life, or the kids', I just want to be a part of it. Right now? I'm here to stay."

Reed and Cadence were the real headliners of the tour anyway. The band was off for some time, so the other members could seek out their own families and just take a break from the life on the road. It was rough, on all of them.

She looked to their hands as he took hers and gently stroked them. It hurt so badly; knowing that though he was here and it was home, he'd always leave again. There would always be another show, always another host of groupies just around the corner. There was nothing she could do to change that--not without uprooting the life she had finally started to make and the kids. Not without being unfair to the lives of her young children. She'd always know there were other women, maybe some who had had talks with him just like this, and because of that she'd never let him get too close.

Her heart was too stitched together to suffer another break that she already knew would wound her too deeply.

"I know this is home for you, and you're not intruding. We love having you in our lives it's just...when they start asking, what else am I supposed to tell them? Alana's heard it all before with Milo's dad, she'd know in an instant if I started making up reasons why you hadn't written or called. And we will be forever grateful if you help get this place back on its feet."

She slowly withdrew her hands as she offered him a soft but sad smile. "You should finish eating, there's nothing worse than cold Mexican."

Though he had doubted she would believe it, Itzal hadn't let many women close to him before now. After a particular hurt with a girlfriend and broken promises he had left any shot of having some sort of a chance of normalcy behind. There were groupies and one night stands, but there was never anything like this. Truth be told, with as much money as he had stashed away, he could afford to retire and perhaps do guest appearances. Do something more normal, grounded in his hometown.

Though he nodded a little Itzal took a few bites, contemplating his next words before he spoke. "...Don't lie to them. I'm not their dad, and I won't ever walk out on them, but I will be gone. Don't tell them the details of war, but it isn't lying that my letters were delayed, that I'd be home soon. I can try to call more though. Before they go to bed." Not that he intended to leave again any time soon, but it was always a possibility they'd hit the road again.

"They know you're job makes you leave and stay in different places a lot. Rather or not you're their dad...they both look up to you like one. I told them I wasn't sure why we stopped getting letters--maybe you just got very busy. But if you would call instead I know they would both like that a lot." Neither father kept contact anymore, so hearing from someone they both regarded so highly would put both young minds at ease. Then reasons he hadn't called would be more easily accepted--his phone ran out of battery, the crowd was too loud, any number of things that while maybe not true at that moment had a good chance at being a true reason for a stage performing musician.

"School's going to be out soon...do you want to go and pick them up with me? I know they'd be excited to see you."
"I have been hidden, scorned, adored, worshiped, forsaken, coveted and banished more times than I care to count. Itzal nodded slightly. "I'm glad that they understand." He wasn't sure if Milo would quite be there yet, being so young. There were reasonable excuses Kasari had made, he could be sure of that... But hopefully they wouldn't have to be excuses if he left again. He could really call them, make sure they were all okay.

"I'd love to go get them." He smiled, finishing off his meal before taking a drink. "It'll be a nice surprise, right?" He offered a soft grin as he turned to go do just that. He knew where the bus stop was, and surely the kids would be excited to see him now.

Kasari smiled back, taking his plate to clean it. "They'll love to see you waiting for them." She said and gave him a soft wave as he went. She could already see the looks on their faces in her mind...he was so dear to both of them as the dad they had never had (for Milo) or the one they had had ripped away from them (for Alana).

Itzal would find himself nearing the bus stop to discover it was just leaving the designated platform. Their voices would find him before their faces did.

"Hurry up Milo! Mom says we can't be late! We have to help her clean up!"
"Don't pull, Alana! You're making my arm red!"
"Your arm is red--you have a red sweater on!"
"..Well under is red too..."

Itzal knew from experience that he could never replace a parent in someone's life, but he could certainly be as good to them as they deserved. Alana was almost Reed's age when he had adopted the little boy who had never looked back at his previous family. They were different though; Alana didn't hate her father, he had just vanished from her life. He had vowed to himself and Kasari that he would never do that, even with having to be away for long stretches of time.

Whistling a soft tune to himself as he heard their voices he grinned, waiting for them to come around the corner so he could see them. "I don't think that there's much cleaning to be done right now." He called out, hoping they would recognize his voice.

The voice calling out made both children look forward. Alana smiled instantly and grabbed Milo's hand. The boy was no longer a toddler, but he certainly wasn't quite school age either. Luckily, his sister's school and his preschool shared a building and thus he was allowed to ride the bus with her afterwards. He was a little slower to follow, looking mildly suspicious of the man calling out.

"Alana...stranger danger..." he whispered in not-so-quiet tones as he tried to protest being drug along towards the grown man. Alana looked down to him with a wide smile.

"It's not a stranger, he's Mr. Itzal! Remember the last time he came over he played guitar for us? Momma's been reading us his letters." The more she talked, the more Milo's eyes widened as his memory was prodded into action.

"Mr. Itzal!" He finally cheered and soon it was he dragging Alana behind rather than the other way around. When he was close enough Milo let go of his sister and promptly latched onto Itzal's leg. Alana was close behind, going to the other side to hug her father-figure's waist.

"We didn't know you were coming home already!"

The man could only grin happily at the kids, crouching down to gather them up into a hug. "What, you've forgotten me already? I know, I've been gone a long time." He ruffled Milo's hair and gently picked them both up. Despite protests she was too old, he fondly told Alana about carrying Reed around until he turned nine.

"It was a surprise. I wasn't sure how long it would take to get home, some of the roads are closed." The kids didn't need to know about the war raging outside of this small town, there was no reason for that. "I really missed you though. I'm going to help your mom clean up the diner, and put on a concert for the whole town to know that we've fixed it up."

Alana wasn't the biggest fan of being picked up at this age (especially not when her classmates might still be in range to see), but she relented if only for the fact that she had missed the man her mother refused to acknowledge as anything beyond 'friend'. She hugged around his neck and Milo mimicked her affection.

"Huh uh! I didn't forget!" Milo protested finally once he pulled away from the hug. "It's just momma always comes to get us. Not you!"

"Really? Does that mean you're staying for a while this time?" Alana asked hopefully as Itzal told them the plans for the diner. Milo did his best to bounce in Itzal's arm.

"Oh, do I get to come too? Momma says I'm too little for concerts...but I'm not! I can stay up that late for one!"

"I know buddy, but I thought it would be a nice surprise." Itzal couldn't help his grin. These kids were amazing, he was glad to be a part of their lives. There was a lot of truth in wanting to stick around, and he hoped Kasari believed him this time.

"I'll talk to your mom about it. I think this concert will be early enough for everyone to come before bedtime though. We still haven't decided on the time yet." It would be a good experience for the kids, to go to a real concert. They liked music, and he had played for them fairly often.

Both children were almost bubbling over with excitement, though Alana did better at hiding it than her little brother. Milo was squirming so much that he risked being dropped if not for Itzal's strong and practiced grip. "I get to go to a concert! I get to go to a concert!" He chanted playfully and Alana giggled.

"Do you think it will work, Itzal? Do you really think a concert will help momma's diner? I don't want to move again..." She still had a happy look about her, but Alana held a glimmer of adult understanding in her eyes that she was far too young for. She knew losing the diner meant losing their home above it too, and then they would be on the move again. She liked it here, she liked her school and her friends.

"Mr. Itzal won't let us move! He's like a...a singing superhero!" Milo chimed in, hugging around Itzal's neck again as she man carried them home.

Luckily for Milo Itzal certainly wasn't out of practice of holding squirmy little boys. He held him in a strong grip even as he laughed softly at their words. At least Milo was excited.

"I do think that the concert will help the diner, Alana. It will raise enough money to fix up the place, and then people will want to come eat there more." Not to mention he was staying in town. There were bound to be some groupies who would still follow him around, want some autographs. It would drum up the business she needed to stay afloat.

"A superhero? I don't know about that much, Milo. You can be a good person without being a superhero." He smiled at the boy, gently letting he and Alana down as they approached the diner. "I don't want you to have to move either, I like living down the road from you."
