"Ya gotta promise not to laugh," Cider muttered.

"I prooomise," Inspire cooed in response. It took her too long to convince her to try on the costume in the first place. She wouldn't dare to laugh at it now that it was on. What kind of person did her dear friend think she was, anyway?

Reluctantly, Cider stepped out from behind the door, looking down at her sparkly shoes. "Are ya sure about this?"

"Positive," Inspire cheered. "You look absolutely stunning!" The costume looked just as good as she thought it would. Now she was especially glad that she took the time to convince her to wear it. "Now, smile!" she said, holding up a camera. There was no way she was going to miss out on getting photos of this.

"Oh come on," Cider grumbled. "Do we have to do this?"

"Of course we do, dear."

"Alright, I'll smile for one picture, that's all yer gettin'." Cider said sternly. Inspire looked down at her dress, to her camera, and back to Cider.

"Make it two?" she cooed in her sweetest voice. Cider raised an eyebrow, giving a clear look of disapproval. "One of you," she explained, "and one more of the two of us!" As she said this she pulled Cider close for a little hug, hoping that would sway things in her favor.

"Oh fine," she grumbled. If they could just get this over with and go already, she didn't mind taking an extra picture. She didn't actually mind taking pictures so much, but she would never let Inspire know that. They would be here forever if she didn't protest and set a limit. She never really did understand all that artsy photography stuff, either. Pictures of your friends and family, she got that, but Inspire really took it to another level sometimes.

Cider reluctantly smiled wide for a picture, but Inspire didn't seem pleased. "It's not smiling if you wrinkle up your forhead," she insisted. Cider sighed lightly and tried to think of something funny. Actually, Inspire fussing about the tripod in her poofy outfit was pretty funny. She cracked a genuine smile, and Inspire had two snaps of it before she could even realize what had happened.

"Now stay right there, don't move a muslce!" Inspire said, clicking a button. Then she pulled up her dress and hurried over to stand where the camera was pointed. With a single quick motion she straightened her dress, threw an arm over her friend's shoulder, and summoned a huge smile. While she was distracted, Cider stuck her tongue out just before the flash went off. It seemed that Inspire didn't notice, because she hurried back over to her camera to pluck it off the tripod.

"Alright, can we go now?" Cider mumbled impatiently.

"Just a second," Inspire said, taking a moment to fiddle with her camera parts. Cider let out an audible sigh of disapproval. They could be here all day while she decides which lenses she might need. She didn't understand how it could possibly make that much of a difference, but they had that argument enough times already.

"Well, you go ahead and play with your camera. Meanwhile, I'll be in the park havin' fun," Cider called back as she headed for the door. Sometimes Inspire just needed a solid push to get going.

"Oh, fine," Inspire responded in a huff. "I'm right behind you," she said, grabbing her camera bag and heading for the door to join her friend. If only Cider had a smidge of patience, she could be sure that everything was perfect, but no. They had to go right this second.

"Now was that so hard?" Cider asked as they headed out into the newly dark evening. Inspire merely responded with a humph of disapproval.

The sun had just set, leaving a trace of twilight grey in its wake. Nonetheless, the entire city was alight with many candles, decorative lights, and jack-o-lanterns. Despite the darkness, the streets were filled with people. Children ran about all over the place, shrieking with a mix of terror and glee. Almost everyone was hidden behind a costume of some kind. Some were scary, others were funny, creative, or even pretty. The creativity shown on this holiday always warmed Inspire's heart.

The two of them made their way to the park with Inspire trailing slightly behind to try and capture everything that caught her eye. Cider had to remind her multiple times to hurry up or they would miss the party. Still, she tried to sneak a photo in here or there, wherever she felt like she couldn't resist. Eventually, though, they made it without too much hassle.

"You don't think we're too old for this, do you?" Inspire asked, looking around the park.

"Nah," Cider responded with a shrug. "No such thing," she assured. Having a good time was all that mattered to her, so she wasn't worried about it. Inspire was much more concerned about what people thought of her. Cider really wished she would lighten up sometimes, but she was reassuring anyhow. She really was a good friend.

The park was full of different games they could play for little prizes and treats, as well as a big maze, and a haunted house. There were also people simply handing out candy, cider, hot chocolate, and other little goodies. They were absolutely surrounded by the creativity and hard work of their friends and neighbors.

"Wanna bob for apples?" Cider asked, flicking a hand in the direction of the game.

Inspire seemed aghast at the suggestion. "But our makeup!"

"Oh... right," Cider said, sounding disappointed. While Inspire did have a point, she was starting to regret agreeing to get all dolled up for the occasion. Why couldn't she just wear a lion mask again like she did last year?

"Well, let's play this, then!" she said, pulling Inspire along with her. It was a game where they had to throw a dart at a target board. If they managed to get a good score, they could win some candy and little toys. Sure some of the prizes were a bit childish, but who could turn away free candy?

"Two please!" Cider asked the man handing out the darts. They got three darts each and went over to the line they were supposed to stand behind. "Think you can beat me?" Cider teased with a smirk. Usually she was pretty good at this stuff, so she felt pretty confident.

"Oh, you are on," Inspire returned with an intense glare. She never was one to back down from a competition. Maybe it wasn't a glamorous game, but she wasn't going to let that stop her from winning. She had a feeling that Cider was underestimating her skill level. Inspire would be sure that she wouldn't make that mistake again.

They each tossed their darts one at a time, each throw more tense than the last. At the end they both eagerly ran up to the target to see how they fared. Cider counted up the points, plucking the darts free as she counted them. The cockiness melted off of her face as she realized the final score. Inspire had beaten her by ten points!

She shuffled over to the man who gave them the darts and handed them back without a word. Inspire followed her with an amused grin. As much as she wanted a picture of Cider's defeated face, she decided against it. It simply wasn't ladylike to gloat. The two of them picked some candies out of the prize bowl and headed for their next adventure.

"Oh come on, I didn't even win by that much," Inspire said after a moment of tense silence. "I did still win though," she muttered under her breath.

"I heard that," Cider grumbled.

"I'm thirsty, let's try some of this," Inspire said. Now it was her turn to do the pulling.

They stopped at a little table set with many little paper cups full of apple cider. It was hand made by the family who had set it up, and it was delicious every year. The two of them each grabbed a cup, and Inspire set some coins on the table in exchange. While they didn't have to pay for it, she was so touched by the effort that she just had to donate.

"Amazing as always, darling," she said to the woman filling the cups. When that was done, she turned back to her friend. "What shall we do next?"

Cider had to think it over for a moment. There was the haunted house, that ought to be fun, and the corn maze too. She didn't feel ready for those yet, though. It was still pretty early in the night, and she had some games to win. She wasn't about to just let the record sit with her losing. With that thought, she started walking toward a new game. "Think ya can beat me again?" she asked, pointing to the game she chose.

Inspire wasn't about to turn down a challenge, of course. "Any time," she responded, still confident after her previous win.

To win this game, they had to throw beanbags into a hole in a box from increasing distances. It was deceptively simple. Too much force and the beanbag would bounce right out, but not enough and they wouldn't make it in. Cider was sure she could win this one, though. She grabbed some beanbags for each of them and went over to the boxes.

Out of courtesy she let Inspire make the first move. She reached back and lobbed the beanbag toward the goal, but it slid off the side of the box. "Shoot," she groaned.

It was Cider's turn next, and after taking ages to line up her shot, she managed to make her goal. Inspire's face became lightly flushed with envy, but she managed to hide it. Luckily for her, her next turn was a success, but Cider missed her second shot. Now they were tied. She took a deep breath, trying not to get ahead of herself, and made her last toss. Unfortunately, this time she missed. Cider had been silent this whole time, trying to focus on the game. It was all down to this, her very last beanbag. Hoping for the best, she made her very best shot...

"Looks like a tie..." Inspire said, a bit surprised at the outcome.
