Almost large enough to be considered a theme park while remaining free to the public, Terrace Park is rumored to have been the site of the Grand Hollowheart's defeat, leading to the Hollowhearts first accepting a pact with humans. (+2 Fame, +2 Endurance)

Okay. Don't be unreasonable, Cain told himself, forcing himself to walk to the bench instead of running. What good would it do him to run? She wasn't there. He wasn't running to anything except the bench. He would wait until half an hour had actually passed. Maybe she was just doing this on principle, to see if he'd really give her as much time as he had promised. She had done something similar before, so it wasn't out of the question.

He sat himself down in the bench and waited, trying not to check his watch every half-second. The urge plagued him like an itch he couldn't scratch.

But the few minutes leading up to the end of that half hour did pass, and Destiny was still nowhere to be found. Cain felt the dread creeping up in him as soon as he saw the second hand tick over. He took another deep breath. It was only a minute; she could have lost track of time; maybe she was running late. She was probably right about him being a little too paranoid sometimes. He could still hear her over the phone, telling him nothing had happened. Nothing had happened.

... Except, what if something had? It wasn't human. The thought made his blood run cold every time he thought it.

The thought had also occurred to him that she might have just imagined it. It had been tempting, so very tempting, to read her then. He could have known for sure whether it was imaginary or not. He, being what he was, could do that. In the end, however, he didn't; as always, it felt too much like a breach of trust, even if he had warned her beforehand. He knew she wouldn't have fought the scan, would have welcomed it, if only to prove a point. He was just afraid of what he would do, of finding things in her head that she didn't want him to see--- or that he didn't want to see. And Destiny had never been the type to pull someone's leg in that way. He couldn't imagine that she would choose to start now.

He watched his clock religiously as one minute late turned into two, then five, then ten. By then, he was no longer willing to wait around. Ten minutes was more than enough time, in his book, to have returned from wherever it was she had gone to. It was also more than enough time to drive the point home, if she had been meaning to make one. He had to believe that something was delaying her.

He didn't rise immediately from his bench. He could have looked over the whole park for her, but that would have wasted time. He hadn't wanted to do this, but he needed to find her quickly, and he would want to be sitting down for this.

He tried not to grimace at the prospect of opening up his mind. It had been such a long time since he had done it, and with good reason. He hated having that many voices in his head. It made it hard to concentrate, and he always felt like he was slipping. Sometimes he wondered which came first, the chicken or the egg--- when he was younger, he had played freely with his abilities, but there had been too many incidents and his mother had had a long talk with him. At first he had abstained at her request, and maybe now the discomfort was merely the result of a lack of practice. Regardless, he could feel himself tense up as soon as the alien thoughts began filtering through to his mind.

His siblings didn't have these issues, as far as he knew. Morpheus, perhaps--- but no, even Morpheus was more comfortable reading people. Psyche was the best at it, and of course nothing particularly hampered Nemo. And maybe he shouldn't have tensed, but the thoughts filtering in felt like intrusions, a cloud of noise in the otherwise quiet realm of his own mind. It wasn't voices, it had nothing to do with hearing, but it was more like voices than it was like anything else.

No, even that wasn't right. It was like other minds flooding in, that was the only way there was to describe it. Images and sensations, passing thoughts and feelings, the subconscious flittings and urges that one barely even registered. Everything was there.

He felt his fingers twitch, and quelled them firmly, dismayed to find just how out of practice he was. External physical impulses shouldn't have been able to override his own at all. It hadn't happened when he was a child, and now... Steady, he told himself, and took a moment to breathe. He had to center himself before he could dive into the waiting seethe, to sort through it for anything that might be of use.

That, at least, came easily. His mother had practiced with him too many times for it to be easily forgotten, and he felt himself falling into the sequence almost unconsciously, drawing that boundary between the edges of himself and everything else. At once, the feeling of suffocation lessened. He unclenched his fists and breathed again.

From there, slowly, he let himself open his channels again, let in the stuff that was hovering at the periphery and thus far had been forcibly ignored. The sensations roared back, even with his cautious return to them, but now he was able to maintain a little distance and view them as an observer might.

It was a good thing he knew Destiny so well.

Cain was no adept at filtering through the mess, but seizing upon Des's signal was like coming home. She very nearly drew him to her, and he was up on his feet and running before he quite knew what he was doing. The intrusion was too sudden, and he felt her stir, felt her take notice. It was nearly enough to startle him into dropping the connection entirely.

However, he didn't. He needed too badly to keep a line of communication open, even this line, as unsavory as it was to him. He shut out everything else, narrowing his field of focus until it was just Destiny, who was by now fully aware of what was happening, and exasperated.

You can hear me, right? I'm fine. He felt her roll her eyes. Relief spread through him, though he was careful to keep any of his own thoughts from filtering through the connection to her. She would have scoffed at him for it but he couldn't help it. He could have reminded her of her promise, and the fact that she had broken it. He ought to have done just that. But he thought, that could wait; he would have liked to find her first.

Still, curiosity did get the better of him. It would be a little while before he would reach her, even running as fast as he could, and he wanted information faster than that if he could get it. What was it? he asked. No lead-up, no frills, no admonishments. He wasn't in any state of mind to make the former, and she wouldn't have appreciated the latter.

She must have appreciated, a little, the stress she had caused him. She did not make an immediate reply, but it came just as Cain was about to ask again. Nothing... bad, I don't think. But you'd better come see for yourself.

Man, was it hot. It was the peak of summer and the sunlight was coming down harshly in Terrace Park, and people were sticking to the shade like glue. The pavement was almost hot enough to cook food on, and Yepha have mercy on any poor soul foolish enough to leave the house barefooted. It was never wise to leave the house without the essentials; sunscreen, a hat and a bottle of water, however it seemed like someone had left one of those items behind.
A Bottle of Water sat on it's lonesome near Cain. It's contents were still cool to touch, so it's owner hadn't left it too long ago. However, no one around seemed to notice it or want to claim it.
