Hmmm, nope. That was definitely an angry look. Probably could have killed him if she was really going for it. Well worth the risk, though, particularly since he was able to keep himself from wincing when he caught sight of her balled, raising fist. "Owww. Calm down, slugger!" He had to let go of his hat to rub the sore spot on his arm. Given the bruise he was going to have, he was probably lucky she hadn't gone for his face. "If you're not scared, then you should have no problem seeing that there's nothing to fear. Come on, it'll be fun."

Echka couldn't help but hope that he sounded and looked more confident than he felt. Readjusting the basket and wine once more, he approached the Night Seraphent. She looked pretty comfortable settled around that tree. He wasn't sure how she managed to do that and, simultaneously, look like she was ready to dart forward and spear him on that really scary pointy-face-bit.

"Forget not that you owe us a debt for this, Echkanar." The Seraphent turned to him, her face hidden; her voice spoke volumes, though. It was slick and smooth, whispering through the passages of the pair's minds like fire across the edges of leaves. Unlike many other Seraphent, this one wore a curved, black helm over her head, concealing everything up to the crest of feathers spraying proudly from its top and the long antennae characteristic of the species. The onyx faceplate was polished to a mirrored sheen.

Echka couldn't school himself against the wince this time. He would never get used to telepathy - his head was supposed to be his own. "Yes, of course, Hel. I'll remember. Promise." Like she would let him forget.

"Ah, Madeline? Helel. Helel, Madeline." His gesture between the pair was brief. Helel turned her head to Maddie and bowed, curt but graceful. While her head was bent, Echkanar stepped just as quickly to her side, straddling the serpent's neck between the pairs of wings. Settling the basket between his legs, the man seemed to test his seat - grabbing handfuls of the quill-like black feathers before turning back to Madeline. "Well, come on then." He called, patting the area in front of the basket with just a hint of cheek. "Plenty of room."

Madeline walked beside Echka, not for a moment longing to appear eager nor afraid. She just wanted to be...even keel. If that was even an attainable level for one whose heart felt ready to pound out of their chest. They were going airborne...on that thing. No seatbelts. No nice metal walls. No complimentary blankets and attendant toting around snacks. Just...wind in her face and a sense that she was going to fall at any wrong turn.

The visage of the 'ride' herself wasn't anything that made the churn in Maddie's stomach calm either. The sharply angled mask of mirror-like black and the way she coiled around the tree. This was a nightmare. This man was leading her into a nightmare and this thing was her own personal chariot. "Yo," she replied automatically when introduced. Her gaze was unwilling to waver from that hidden face.

Before she could think Echka was on top of the giant feathered serpent and beckoning for her to follow and sit in front of him no less. If there was one thing she did not want to do more than fly on this thing, it was watch the world come closer and closer first hand as they crashed. "As sure as I am that I'm a better driver than you, you're the one who asked me on this crazy celebration of a dead man. I'll sit behind." The thought did cross her mind that he had probably been hoping for a little closeness--being the big man to hold her safe and sound around the waist while she conquered this fear. She wasn't willing to give him that pleasure.

She also wasn't willing to let her tears hit him in the face as she freaked out over what they were about to do.
"I have been hidden, scorned, adored, worshiped, forsaken, coveted and banished more times than I care to count. But the one thing all those experiences cannot steal from me is the gentle soul I was born with, the kind heart I have molded, and the bright ideals for the future that have lit my way through the darkness of the past."

Both eyebrows lifted, but only for a moment. Then Echka's smile was as easygoing as possible, and he shrugged. "Suit yourself," he lied cheerfully, before scooting forward to sandwich basket and wine firmly between himself and feathers. He couldn't really be upset with losing out on so transparent a cuddle. Losing that basket, on the other hand? Nothing short of a complete disaster.

In the spirit of false cheer, he barked out a laugh. "We haven't even hit crazy, you know," he yelled over the sound of Helel's coils slithering away from the tree. Beast and man waited, one more patiently than the other, for their final passenger to situate herself. Bark cracked and splintered, marred by time spent in Hel's twisting embrace. "You have to admit that nothing we've done so far has even come close to the things normally done today."

"Have you at least let her know that you find her pretty?" The voice came again, sliding around the curves of Echka's mind alone. "...Especially when her courage shines?"

Echkanar frowned. He couldn't say anything back, but he could definitely punch the greeny-black scales beneath him in response. He didn't need help.

Madeline climbed onto the back of the beast like she meant to slay the creature; poised and aggressive in her movements. She wasn't going to be reduced to a damsel in distress over this no matter how her insides churned. She was going to do this. "I don't know, throwing rocks at my window was pretty clique!" she yelled back. That's it, put up a sarcastic front to hide behind like always. Classic, girlie.

Once in place she grabbed handfuls of black feathers and scooted closer to Echka. Not too close, but close enough that if she was going to fall she could at least take him with her for starting this whole thing. Truth be told she was more than poised to wrap herself shamelessly around him like some clownish cartoon hound to his possibly stoner buddy at the first motion of takeoff.

No, she was going to sit here and be brave. She could do this. There was only going to be a large open air space for which her fear of hitting the ground from a long way up could play over and over again in her mind. Really, no big.

He waited, at least, until he felt her at his back; sure that she was holding on tight and safe as possible. Then he looked over his shoulder and grinned. "You want something not cliche, my melancholy mispronouncing maven?" The sound of his voice had barely died before Echka flattened himself over the feathered mane. Maddie might feel something faint, like the memory of laughter, flicker between her ears before the four wings rose once, then twice. Powerful coils beneath her tensed. With a rustle of leaves and a flurry of dust, Helel rose into the air.

Hard flaps carried the three into the sky. Hel rose in circles, climbing exponentially higher with each beat. Within the first two, almost eleven feet of serpent had cleared all but the tallest trees. With the next two, most buildings dropped out of view. With four more, only the blue of the evening sky stretched out around them.

Only now, as Hel stopped flapping to gain altitude and began coasting for warm thermal air, did Eckha lean up to check on his reluctant companion.

If Echka would have chosen to turn around again at that very moment he would find a scarlet-faced Madeline staring at him in utter embarrassment. She had gotten flustered and her words let it show but worse than that was that he had noticed. Not only noticed, but called her out on it. Her mind already in a frenzy over the thought of flying on this behemoth of a serpent, the gothic woman had momentarily lost her ability at the comeback she was hoping for and thus the scarlet on her cheeks deepened to something more similar to a shade of maroon.

She barely had time for her tongue to hit the back of her teeth to begin forming a word when the creature beneath her began to shift and they started rising into the air. She swore she could hear laughter being stirred up with every wing beat, her mind racing for anything tangible to focus on before she gave up and clamped her eyes closed.

Which, as she quickly discovered, only made their quick ascension feel much worse. She lurked forward and all but kissed the scales of the creature she was sitting on, her hands tightly wrapped in the feathers and her mind screaming out prayers to every deity she had ever heard of. Her ears popped and she opened her eyes to see trees and buildings now just tiny dots below them. She clamped them closed again and clung to Hel, saying a quick prayer to her too just for good measure.

But the one thing all those experiences cannot steal from me is the gentle soul I was born with, the kind heart I have molded, and the bright ideals for the future that have lit my way through the darkness of the past."

Wow. He'd definitely seen her look better. "You alright back there, Maddie?" For her sake, Echka tried to keep his voice on the cool side - were he in her position, he'd want nothing even resembling pity - though he did err on the side of danger, lowering a hand to his reluctant date's shoulder. If she pressed herself any harder into the seraphent, she may very well grow feathers herself.

"We've stopped climbing for a bit. Should take a look." It was hard to sound nonchalant when all of Terrace Park was laid out below them. From their current height, Eckha thought he could even make out the borders of Kyrie's sprawling home. The clouds were closer than he ever thought they could be. He was a little disappointed to find out they weren't made of ice cream or something, that they weren't the kind of thing you could just gather in your hand like so much cotton candy.

Obviously, he'd known that. But knowing it and having it confirmed by feel, sight, and scent were two different things entirely.
