Return to Terrace Park

Blind Date: Barry x Masika

Masika
(Set in Terrace Park)

The sun was shining, but somehow there was also a light drizzle over the park. It was a scene typical of a summer rain, though obviously quite out-of-season. Along one of the park paths was a girl in shorts and a tank skipping around. Her hair fell in her face as she looked down at the puddles she splashed in and out of. A small umbrella sat on a nearby bench and a light raincoat was wrapped around her waist, neither of them doing her any good. She just got progressively wet by the minute.

Masika was supposed to be here for a date, apparently. Isabel had just come up to her one day and told her to meet some dude neither of them knew in some random park neither had been to before. Some other girls might've been a little concerned or anxious or even excited, but Masika had just laughed and shrugged. She had gotten here early, feeling good about the day ahead. Completely lost in her...activity, however, Masika hadn't noticed that it was about time for her date to show up.
You can pretend that when you hear my voice, darling, it's your choice not to fall in.

But it's all an act, 'cause I know exactly what you're wanting. You know it's what I'm wanting

Boy I know what you desire, oh, you're such a bad, bad liar

This could be perfection, or venom dripping in your mouth

Singing like a Siren, love me while your wrists are bound

Barry really hated his uncle sometimes. Scowling, he recalled how his uncle had kept him awake half the night, then proceeded to disable his alarm clock this morning. He looked down at his watch, and, after cursing under his breath, he broke into a run. Good thing I picked out something breathable.

Props to him for wearing athletic shorts and his favorite tee. He even wore his running shoes! Thanking his past self, Barry sprinted down the path, panting heavily from not only exertion, but nerves. He really hoped he wasn't going to be late!

He frowned at the very notion, and failed to focus on the path ahead of him. Suddenly, the soft earth turned into slick mud. Where had the rain even come from?! Before he had time to stop himself, he slid right into the path of a rain-soaked girl. "Look out!"

And is there a God up there? 'So,
where does he hide?
'Cause the devil is raging inside my
mind
And is there a moment where it all
makes sense?

Masika's eyes widened at the sudden appearance of a man before her. He was wearing a sports-like outfit and was clearly not expecting the rain on his run. She only had a moment to say "Oh" before he crashed right into her. Thankfully, she'd managed to not fall flat on her back.

Now on the ground though, Masika paused and stared blankly at the man. He seemed to have come out of nowhere. Of course, at this moment, she'd completely forgotten about her date. Realizing she had been staring, she averted her gaze. Vaguely, she realized she felt...more wet than before. Looking down, she realized she'd fallen into a puddle. It was at that moment that she started giggling. Looking back up at the poor fellow, Masika smiled gently.
"Well, I like the water, but this is a bit much, hm?" she joked, before tilting her head at him, "are you okay?"

"Oof!" Barry collided with the girl and flew backwards, arms flailing as he barely managed to regain his balance. His counterpart, however, was not so lucky. He winced as she landed with a wet smack, eyes widening as he took in her soaked appearance.

He stood, frozen, unaware that he was staring for longer than was socially acceptable. At her giggle, the young man shook himself out of his daze. He immediately felt his face heat at her joke, and his dark skin flushed an interesting shade in embarrassment. "Oh, no, don't worry about me!" Barry leaned down and offered a hand to help the poor girl out of the puddle.

Barry looked at her wet clothes once more, guilt weighing heavily in his gaze. "Heavens, I'm so sorry about this, are you alright?" He fired off the questions in a nerves-fueled rush.

Masika gratefully took his hand and let him help her up. Unwrapping her raincoat from around her waist, she patted her shorts before analyzing the coat. She looked over at the guy with a friendly, amused expression.
"I'm fine, I think my coat took the brunt of it," she said, displaying her coat as proof. She wasn't particularly troubled by this, a fact that was clear in the way she chucked the coat at the bench near them. It caught on the bench handle and hung there precariously.

Masika looked back at the guy. "It's alright. Accidents happen," she said as she fluttered a hand dismissively. "Besides," she continued, "I was already wet." She laughed lightly before tilting her head again at him. The rain had slowed to a light drizzle, but did not seem to be gone quite yet. "What were you running for, anyway?" she asked.

Barry watched the coat soar over to the bench before trailing his eyes back to the girl. "Oh, good," he blurted. "Well, not good about your coat, but good that your other clothes are good!" Wow. Way to show your conversation skills, Baruch.

At her mention of already being wet, Barry looked down at his clothes and groaned. "Looks like I'm pretty soaked, too," he remarked as he began to laugh with her. He tilted his head at her question blankly. Why had he been running? Oh! The young man nearly face palmed at his own forgetfulness.

Turning his eyes back up to her, he responded, "I was running late." He paused for a moment, letting his face split into a wide grin. "No pun intended," he chuckled. "But yeah, I was late for a date..." he trailed off, before his eyes widened. His date! He looked down at his watch. Groaning, he ran a hand across his face. "Well, I'm definitely late now, anyway."

Masika laughed at Barry's unintended pun, smiling in a friendly way as she listened to him. So, he was here to meet a date. After a second, Masika suddenly recalled that she too was supposed to be meeting up for a date. How coincidental that both of them were supposed to be meeting a date here. She opened her mouth to comment on the coincidence when her brain suddenly connected the dots. A little embarrassed that she had not thought of it sooner, Masika blushed slightly and asked, "um, your name wouldn't be...Barry, by any chance?"

The rain became a little heavier, getting into her eyes. Seemingly as an unconscious reflex, Masika fluttered her hand as if she were swatting away a fly. At that moment, the rain went away so quickly that it almost seemed to have stopped all at once. A faint rainbow started to shimmer in the sunny sky.

Barry's eyes widened at the question. How does she know my name?! For a brief second, he began to panic. No, there's no way she could know me, he tried to convince himself. He took a deep breath and forced himself to relax. His attention was derailed as the rain suddenly stopped.

He looked up at the sky and gasped silently. He'd never seen a rainstorm do something like that before. He kept staring for another moment before shaking himself out of his stupor and blinking back down at the girl in front of him. Wait... He looked back over at the jacket on the bench. Looking back at the girl, he felt his face go from pale to flushed in no time. His date!

With a self-deprecating chuckle, the young man winked and bowed shallowly in introduction. "Barry-Alexander, at your service, Miss..." he paused for a moment, searching his memory for her name. "Masika, correct?" He smiled sheepishly and offered his hand in greeting. "A pleasure to meet you. And sorry once more about earlier. That isn't usually the way someone goes about sweeping you off your feet, I'm sure."

Masika was thoroughly amused as she watched Barry's expression change over the course of a couple minutes. It seemed that he hadn't connected the dots either, which made her feel a little better. She smiled as he bowed and shook his hand warmly. He made a joke about sweeping her off her feet and she laughed, shaking her head.
"No, I suppose not," she said. "It's nice to meet you too, Barry. I can call you that, right?"

Tilting her head at his second apology, Masika glanced at Barry's rain-soaked shirt before realizing that the situation wasn't entirely his fault. Smiling softly at him, she said, "I should be the one to apologize, actually, now that I think of it. If I hadn't been playing around, you wouldn't have gotten wet or slipped." She was always being told to be more mindful of others, and this whole situation was proof that she hadn't yet mastered that task.

Barry's nervous grin melted into a relieved smile, glad that she was understanding, if not forgiving. He gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "Barry is much preferred, actually," he replied in an almost grateful tone.

At that, he let her hand slip out of his grip as he dropped his own back down by his side. His eyebrows scrunched in an almost concerned fashion at her own apology. "Oh, no, please don't feel the need to apologize for any of that!" He frowned slightly, then continued. "After all," he shrugged lightly as the grin snuck back onto his face. "It's not like you caused the rain, right ?"

Masika's expression turned to confusion for a moment before the realization struck her. Honestly, after all this time, you'd think she'd be quicker at telling people what was up. She shook her head slowly and smiled meekly. "Actually, I kind of did," she informed him. "Cause the rain, that is."

Looking upwards, Masika held her hand up in front of her, palm facing the sky. The faint clouds that had disappeared a few moments before now gathered above them. A moment later, light drops of water were streaking down her face. She glanced at Barry to see his reaction as she closed her fist and lowered her hand. As she did, the rain stopped and the clouds faded away. Masika shrugged with a sheepish frown, "Sorry," she repeated.

Barry's eyebrows raised slightly in surprise. Did she just say she caused the rain? He honestly wasn't sure what to say, and just as he was going to ask for clarification, she began to move. Suddenly, Barry was shaded from the sunlight, and he looked up to see clouds gathering across the sky once more.

His eyes widened in shock as rain once more began to fall. How is this possible? He barely registered the feeling of the cold droplets on his cheeks as he stood frozen in disbelief. The only thing that shook him from his state of shock was the girl's quiet and nervous-sounding apology.

Barry stared at her for a moment, expression unreadable, before slowly shaking his head. "No, no, don't apologize... That is so -" He broke off as his mouth spread into the biggest grin yet, and his eyes positively danced with excitement. "Incredible!" He could feel his cheeks beginning to hurt with how wide his smile was. "You have magic that allows you to control the weather... I didn't even know magic was real!" Childlike wonder joined excitement at the realization, and he continued to look at his companion, almost bursting at the seams.
