And that other, less savory park may well have just been an undeveloped lot that someone had tried to make the best of, really. At night it wasn't safe to be out, and not just because of the people; there was some pretty unsavory wildlife too, to go with the unsavory maybe-park.

He was fortunate that he lived on the edge of that mess though, and within a little while he came into the neater, more respectable stretch of houses and apartment buildings.

Nearer to the park, there were even some children out playing around, though a parent always seemed to be close at hand. Then again, did places where children could roam unsupervised really exist anymore, anywhere? Even the gated communities of the rich had their dangers, perhaps even moreso because it was known that everyone there had money.

He rounded one last corner, and the park itself came into view: a parking lot, a sign declaring the park's name, a children's playground immediately visible.

Beyond it stretched a wide expanse of grass, and a wooded area beyond, though this wood curated and thoroughly permeated with paths. If there was wildlife here, it was a more tractable type than he was used to seeing around his building. He couldn't see anything here but the kinds of little birds people set out feeders for.

He didn't dwell on it, however. He wasn't here for the woods; he was just here to have a picnic. The grass was good enough for him today.

There were, in fact, a few picnic tables in the park, but Fabio had brought his picnic blanket, and he intended to use it. Otherwise what would have been the point of lugging it all this way? He wanted to stretch out too, which wasn't really feasible with a table. Or he supposed it was, if you were lying on top of one, but that was less comfortable than grass, and a lot more conspicuous besides. That was the sort of conduct that made those parental guardians look at you funny and usher their kids away.

Fabio found a nice spot, away from anyone who looked like they had a dog they might be interested in letting off its leash, and set his basket down so he could lay out his picnic blanket.

It wasn't that he disliked dogs on principle, but in his line of work, be it an occupational hazard or straight-up bad luck, he had a lot more negative encounters with them than positive. He just didn't feel like worrying about what kind of dogs he'd be running into today, if he could help it at all.

Of course, when food came into the equation, maybe all bets were off... But he wanted to be optimistic. And by optimistic, he mostly meant he wasn’t going to worry about it until it was an issue. If it became an issue, that is.

And he could totally take some dogs. It wouldn’t have been ideal, but it was nothing like that Grondalith thing he’d ran into in those caves. What the hell was that thing anyway? Well, no; he knew what it was, but what was its deal?

Melanie had said they guarded things, but what could possibly have existed down there that was worth guarding? As far as he’d been able to tell, it was just rocks, sand, water and weird fungus down there. Would anyone be interested in that, besides those oddball scientist types?

Oh, right, and there had been that guano too, but the Grondalith definitely hadn’t been guarding any of that, or else Fabio would have caught a whiff of it before he’d had to run for his life.

In fact, the only thing of any real value they’d managed to find in those blasted caves was a Stargoyle. Melanie had been really excited about that one, but she hadn't had to do the work for it.

He’d managed to coax it out with him, though he wasn’t really sure at the time whether he was going to be able to manage it. It had been pretty touch-and-go for a good moment. Melanie had given him an earful, but what could he do? Animal handling wasn’t exactly his go-to expertise. If she wanted a beast-wrangler, she could ask... Actually, did anyone in the Flock work with animals?

There had to be someone... but off the top of his head, Fabio couldn’t come up with anyone. Maybe it was one of the agents he didn’t know very well, or someone new that he hadn’t been introduced to yet altogether. He couldn’t presume to know everyone. It was better, in some respects, that he didn’t; that way if he got caught and they pumped him for information, he couldn’t give up all of them.

Whoever it was though, it wasn’t him. Their last excursion was ample proof of that much.

Having laid out the picnic blanket, Fabio immediately laid himself down on it, stretching out just like he’d wanted. It was just long enough that he could do it without his head or his feet touching the grass. Propping his hands behind his head, he looked up at the sky.

It was a good day for an ordinary, stereotypical picnic. It was sunny, and there were ordinary, stereotypical clouds drifting by one by one. He could probably even do that thing where he tried to figure out what they were shaped like, if he really wanted.

When was the last time he’d actually done that? He tried to remember, but he couldn’t really come up with anything there either. Maybe it was one of those things that he’d only really seen people do on TV or something.

Was it fun? He squinted at the clouds directly overhead, and tried to make heads or tails of any of them, but the thing was, they were all sort of just... cloud-shaped. Formless wispy blobs with no semblance of form. Was he being too literal about it?

Must have been. He was past the prime age for this sort of thing anyway. People were at their most creative when they were children, right? That ship had sailed. And when he would have found the time and state of mind to do this when he had been a kid, he didn’t know.

He sighed and closed his eyes, smiling. Well, if cloud-shapes were the domain of children, then naps must certainly belong to old folks like himself. No, that wasn’t quite right, was it...?

Naps were kid territory too... Toddler territory. But there was no reason it couldn’t be both. He was good with the idea of a nap right now, here on his picnic blanket, with the sun shining down on him and reminding him that he wasn’t miles beneath some rock at the behest of a flatulent old loon.

Except... he couldn’t really fall asleep. He didn’t know how long he laid there, but eventually he started to feel restless. He turned, shifted his position, then rolled over to lie on his side.

Nothing he tried did him any good though. Maybe it was because it was so bright out. He certainly felt tired enough, even though he’d had a night’s rest. One night could only do so much.

If Melanie came through with one of those meaty, significant missions he’d wanted so badly right this minute, he wasn’t sure how up for it he would feel. He’d take it, of course--- when would he ever have the chance to do something like that again?--- but he wouldn’t be as glad for it as he could have been. That was how tired he felt.

Who knew the sun would work against him like this? But it was still better to be out in it than cooped up inside. And he still had his picnic basket.

That was right... Actually, maybe it was for the best that he hadn't fallen asleep. Sure, this was the better side of town, and probably no one was going to try and steal his stuff, but all bets were off when it came to dogs and food, right? And kids, for that matter.
