As an active volcano, few creatures venture near Nori for fear of being too close during an eruption. On most days there is a continuous slow flow of molten rock seeping through the mouth of the volcano, so travelers are advised to dress appropriately. (+2 to Endurance)

Gathering Fruit (Self | Done)

Postby Sarah » 09/13/2015 4:38 PM

The soft colors of sunrise had come and gone by the time the white/purple placid woke. She lifted her head and looked around her den. With the growing population of the clan many paragon had been moved to different buttes. Her den had once had a little opening in that wall that allowed the sunlight to filter into her nest. Unfortunately she was one of the ones chosen to move. She knew it was in her best interest to move, she was small and fragile compared to others. It was safer for her to be in the new butte as predators were less likely to invade the tunnels.

Groggily she wondered just what time it was. She could tell by the noise that the sun was shining. The night paragon were much more courteous and stayed quiet. She uncurled fully and stretched as well as she could in the cramped cave. Razza knew she didn’t have enough time to even enjoy waking up slowly. With winter coming her job was more vital than ever. Her magic wielding brethren did their best to keep the food from rotting, but the yearly storage cleaning was upon them. It was her job to replace what food they threw out.

Razza was not a particularly strong paragon, nor was she a fan of blood. She was charged with foraging to replace berries and vegetables. Her tribe did have ways to garden, but it was a lot more complicated that could be managed. For now at least their tribe was too low in number, especially non meat eating paragon, to warrant the trouble of gardening. Razza would gather, others would hunt, and if their population was ever able to sustain a farm they would start a farm. Razza was a bit grateful, she liked foraging and being in nature. She was unsure if she was quite ready for her job to change.

As Razza climbed the butte she thought less of her tribe’s future. What was important now was refilling the food storage. Being a placid was cause for some concern. The tribe didn’t want her to go out alone, and she didn’t like being out alone, but it always created a mystery as to who would be escorting her. Most of the tribe was incredibly kind to her, although sometimes males could get a bit excited. Razza wasn’t one to cause conflict so she tended to enjoy the company of her tribe no matter who it was.

Once she was at the top of the butte she took in her surroundings. She was a lot closer to the main mesa of the tribe. The sun shone at midday, illuminating her white and purple scales. They reflected the light beautifully although those who looked at her might be blinded by it. She loved the way the sun warmed her. The stone could get so cold, and without a nest mate she never could get warm enough. It wasn’t all the time that she could say that, the summers were brutally hot and coming home to cool stone was a relief. Her small body just wasn't able to hold in the heat it needed.

Razza lazily extended her wings and allowed the sunlight to filter through the almost translucent membrane. Now that she had the room she stretched. Her back arched, her legs pulled forward, her tail pointed straight out. She liked to imagine herself as a giant cat waking from a nap. She yawned deeply and a bout of almost white flame spouted into the sky. In return she saw a few more colors dance through the sky. Razza smiled, maybe today would be playful.

Jumping off the buttes was her preferred way to take flight. She never seemed to have the muscle to lift off from a full stop. In an emergency she could do it, otherwise it was far too much work. Razza edged herself to the edge and lept off. The fall down was far shorter than it appeared and so she snapped open her wings to avoid crashing. Using as much strength as she could muster she got herself up to altitude and headed over to the mesa. Someday she’d take some time to grow stronger.

The mesa was mostly empty, Gylles and Yvana were talking together, otherwise it seemed the other lead paragon had gone off to do whatever they needed to do. Razza was a hard paragon to miss, and once she touched down Gylles’ head perked up. Already Gylles was one of the biggest paragon in the clan, and he looked even bigger next to the small placid.

“You’ll be gathering along the southern forest today,” he informed her. “I believe Lanette will be showing up shortly. She’ll be the one helping you,” he said.

“Got it, thank you,” Razza said with a smile. Now she had to wait. Not her favorite thing to do, especially since Gylles had gone right back into his conversation with Yvana. Razza decided to sit and sun herself until her partner appeared.

It wasnt long before the very blue paragon came into veiw. Lanette was known for her trapping ability, and she would make a good partner for Razza. The two together were very brightly colored which had a chance of drawing attention, but Lanette was quick and clever. Razza had faith that, should anything happen, Lanette would make sure they got away safe. Plus Lanette was big enough to actually be intimidating.

“Hey!” Razza greeted excitedly.

“Hi, are you ready to go?” Lanette asked. She’d always liked Razza, the paragon seemed to have a smile for everyone. It was refreshing after being around all the hard asses of the inner mesa.

“Ready when you are,” Razza confirmed. She was glad that Lanette seemed to be in a good mood. It would have been unfortunate ifs he had to go out with someone who wasn't going to talk with her.

They took flight with Razza leading. She had been around long enough to know where certain fruits would be ripe, and where the plants were thickest. It changed from year to year though, depending on the weather. The first few days of flying took some guess work, and the gatherers were sent out in bigger groups to cover a larger amount of forest. Two weeks had passed and the clan knew where they should land, and what places they should avoid. They even knew some of the predators routes and territories which was incredibly helpful. The likelihood of the being attacked was incredibly low.

At some point Razza shifted her flight to take them southeast. The air was moving just enough to make flight easy, and she was enjoying the feeling of being in the air. Not that she wasn’t able to use her wings every day, but there was something very freeing about being to high above the ground. She was thankful to have been born with wings. Not that paragon without wings were looked down upon, Razza just knew that she was made to be in the sky and she didn’t want to take it for granted.

The change from lava plain to forest was rather drastic. One moment the ground was a dull red color and then tall green and yellow trees jutted up thickly. As far as Razza could see there wasn't anything to worry about on the ground. They were also very close to a thick clump of wild berries.

“Shall we land?” Lanette asked as they circled above the forest.

“Yes please,” Razza said beginning her descent. Lanette took the lead so she could have time to asses the situation on the ground. From above it didn't look dangerous, but once they were in the thick brush it was easier to be ambushed.

“Looks clear,” Lanette said once she had gotten a good look at their surroundings. It was nice to be in the shadow of the forest instead of in the heat of the sun. Lanette knew that the berries mostly grew in sunny patches, but it would be a nice walk in the shade until they found a patch.

“Alright, let’s get to work then,” Razza said once she landed. There were quite a few spots around that they could scavenge. As far as Razza knew no other big group had been sent this far south. She hoped to bring back quite a load of food.

Lanette was not a fan of the harness that came along with gathering. It had two woven baskets to carry berries and was really a vital invention for the tribe, but all the leather straps rubbed her scales in weird ways. Lanette followed the Razza’s lead and tried to ignore the straps. It wasn’t hard really, on occasion the strap would move though and she would have to fix its placement. It didn’t seem like Razza had the same problem. Maybe the placid had just been wearing the harness for so long it no longer bothered her. Lanette prefered trapping, she never had to wear any sort of cloth.
