Return to Whisper Forest

Chance Encounters [P, Me and Sapph]

It wasn't often that Rory was sent out on patrols alone. If anything, the guys in charge kept her on tight leash. With a grumble, she ducked underneath a branch and approached the next trail marker. When did the area get so overgrown? Probably since the last landscaping crew disappeared back here, her brain supplied. It was the fourth one since she arrived, too.

That was the beauty of working on the Whisper Forest Search & Rescue Crew, she supposed, adjusting the badge on her jacket. There was never a boring day on the job. This place was a hotspot for disappearances, and the locals were pretty superstitious about it. So far, though, every case Rory and "her crew" were put on was solved - for better or for worse.

She vaulted over a fallen tree, mentally noting to bring a chainsaw with her next time. Spotting the next marker, she adjusted it, making sure it was in a better place to be seen. It was the simple things that could prevent these disappearances, if only everyone would take the time to do them. With an indignant scoff, Rory scanned the area, checking for people or creatures.

The Forest was usually empty this time of year, but it never hurt to keep an eye out.

And is there a God up there? 'So,
where does he hide?
'Cause the devil is raging inside my
mind
And is there a moment where it all
makes sense?

Caius stumbled off the boat onto dry land. He looked around unsure of himself. This was the first time he was traveling alone without his team. He dropped his backpack from his shoulders onto the ground next to him. He was unfamiliar with this forest. Caius did some research about this forest and also read the news articles about the missing campers. Strange things always happen here or that's what the rumors said. Lucky, he was a scientist and never believe in the hocus pocus stuff. He bent over and opened his backpack. Maneuvering around the bag, he finally found what he was looking for, he fished out his map. Caius bent down on the ground and opened his map, spreading it on the ground. He looked at the map until he spots the area he highlighted in a rich blue color. That was the area he had to go. It was said that the rafflesia arnoldii grow in that small area.

It was documented by a botany some 30 years ago that Whisper Forest was one of forest that grown this one plant. It was a rare plant that was said to only grow in rich dark soil in one or two forests in the world. If Dr. Moschella was telling the truth then he should find the plant or at least some kind of proof that they plant grow here. There was rumors that Dr. Moschella had went crazy as he aged. Most of Dr. Moschella peers said most of his work in later years were all in his head and that none of it was true. Caius wanted to prove all the botanies were wrong and that Dr. Moschella was sane. He came here to bring back a specimen to show everyone that this plant did grow here. He folded his map up and place in his back pocket. He got up from his spot, grabbed his backpack and went into the forest in the many entrances.

Seeing nothing of interest, Rory dodged the low hanging branches and continued along the path. She and her peers were instructed thoroughly to never, under any circumstances, leave the path when on patrol alone. If anything were to occur off the path, then they were to radio in for back-up and wait until others arrived before doing anything.

What a bunch of baloney.

If she caught sight of someone in trouble, then Rory Lewis wasn't going to disgrace her family name by waiting around for back up - it could take up to 30 minutes for someone to arrive, even in one of the off-road vehicles the organization had. That half hour could mean life or death for someone in these woods, and Rory wouldn't take that kind of chance.

Luckily, it's only happened once or twice to her - and neither time did she get caught, thanks to moving the person back onto the path before anyone else arrived. She was clever like that, and was almost smug in her reports to her superiors - Rory was too intelligent to "break" rules that were easily avoidable.

As she was lost in her musings, she ended up going off of the red-marked path and onto an older one instead, obliviously heading deeper into the Forest than her scheduled patrol was meant to. The tattered yellow markers showed the disuse of this path, as well as the marked warnings and thickening underbrush, but Rory absent-mindedly dodged the obstacles and hiked on.

Caius was getting frustrated. His was walking around in circles, at least he thought he was. He looked around the forest irritated. There wasn't one landmark or anything that he could recognize that would be slightly different. All the plants and trees looked the same. Even though he was a botany, he only studies the rare plants, not the common ones that seem to take up as much space in this frost as possible. He throws down his bag from his back. It was just like him to get lost. Why didn't he hire a guide that was familiar with the frost? He had to jump head first into his search for the rafflesia arnoldii. Any smart botany would of plan everything beforehand but he had to be the idiot of botany. What was he thinking? There was really nothing he can do about it now. He kicked his backpack and took a deep breath. He had to figure out how to either get out of the forest or get to the spot where the rafflesia arnoldii grow. Caius pulled the map out of his pocket and tried to study it. It wasn't easy since the map couldn't help tell him where he was located at, maybe he should have brought a GPS instead.

Well, this was great.

Rory looked at the tattered yellow fabric in her hand with what could be described as a "constipated" expression. Of course, she had to get too full of herself and wander off when she should've been focusing on her patrol. Instead of allowing herself to become angry, she silently tied the marker back onto the tree. All she had to do was follow the path back, it wasn't a big deal.

It wasn't like this was the only path with a high number of disappearances - no need to freak out.

The forest ranger took a calming breath, and turned to head back the way she came - that was, until she hear a faint rustling from down the path a ways. She froze - quickly going through all of her training in her mind as she watched the area she had heard the noise come from.

After a long moment of nothing else occurring, Rory was ready to turn back. It would probably be best to get out of here, she thought, but she continued to stand in the same spot. But what if it's someone that needs my help? Nobody else was gonna come back this way...

Rory grabbed the baton off of her belt, then cautiously called out, "Hello? Is anyone there?"

And is there a God up there? 'So,
where does he hide?
'Cause the devil is raging inside my
mind
And is there a moment where it all
makes sense?
