Work is Art-- In a Circus [Self | Quest]

Shale finished counting his funds for the day, not like money was really his prime reason for running the Serval Gate Circus. It was the people that came in that really brightened up his evenings, or day, whenever he wanted to host. Oh, and his cats. People would bring him lost cats now and then, knowing he had the best home for them-- and he did. Even wild cats were welcome, and it was always so... funny how people complimented his natural affinity towards felines.

He glanced into his mirror, his stark white fur shimmering into an iridescent blue and purple. Oh yes, if only they knew. However, he couldn't go out in his real form, there was no reason in frightening his customers with his monstrous appearance. They would never come back if he did that! Shale ran a long claw down the length of one of his massive teeth, long and curved-- and perfect for ripping into flesh. In that instant, his form shimmered in and out to reveal his normal human guise.

His first stop was his freak show tent. Every time he entered, he could feel the excitement of being seen. "Greetings, how are you all doing today?" he passed by several cages, a little saddened by having to keep them in there. It was all for the show, and he was sure to treat them well later.

"Wonderful Mr. Shale! Is the circus opening soon? We can't wait to put on a show!" they all chimed in, saying similar things. How wonderful it is to have such exuberance in those that others would see as deformed freaks.

Next was his visitation to the lion tamer, and as always, he was more than cordial with him, offering him tea and some crumpets while his lion snuggled up to him. He got the same 'wow, my lion is so affectionate with you Mr. Shale!' and he couldn't help but grin in response. Of course he was affectionate, he was by an apex predator, King of Cats! Shale giggled in joy, oh so wanting to just tell everyone what he really was! But he couldn't. No one could know.

Some more work on trying to find out the next place to set up his circus. A nearby town looked fine enough, but of course he had to okay it with the mayor per usual. If he just set up shop without permission then he could get in trouble. It wasn't even the threat of being kicked out or injured, he could take care of that without a problem. It was the reputation of his circus that mattered the most.

Shale rested back in his carriage, setting up a time to meet with the mayor on the subject of opening his circus in town. He needed to keep income going for his employed, but to him, the money mattered not. He did not require frivolous luxuries, so long as he had his circus and those who were loyal to him, then he was set. Food and fancy drink didn't matter, if he could, then he could live without either. After all, does a shadow require mortal subsistence?

Shale gave a quick whirl of his hand, giving a bored sigh. The waiting game was hard, and all he had to do now is continue taking care of the circus and tend to his hobbies. It wasn't like that was a huge complaint, as he did make some extra money off his paintings. Oh how funny it would be for the humans to learn that they were buying from a cryptid? A being of legend, a being that is feared and shunned! They were nightmares given life, and here they are, groveling at his feet and giving him money hand over fist! It was such a strange thing to be proud of, but he found immense pride in controlling the masses with promises of extraordinary feats.

Days came and went, and the meeting with the mayor went off without a hitch. He was first and foremost, and entertainer, and with that came a silver tongue. It wasn't hard to convince the man that he should set his circus up, and the need for delight to be spread throughout the town was very much needed.

The night of the circus was on, and already Shale could see people piling into the circus grounds. Bright lights of the carnival rides illuminating many food and game stands, and at the center stood the big top-- a much more massive circus tent than normal, and in the center was Shale, getting ready to introduce his first act.

He stepped up onto the center platform, feeling the same pride every time he did so-- the crowd's cheers and praise filling him with a sense of fullness. Their emotions were the thing that fed him, and was always so happy to oblige them with 'impossible feats' and 'terrifying shows'.

"Ladies and Gentlemen! Boys and Girls! The Serval Gate Circus welcomes all of you! Get ready to feast your eyes on the impossible and witness things you have never seen before! You will experience thrills and chills and the most daring feats of bravery! Our first act is well on your way, watch how these acrobats perform the most whimsical feats of agility!" he felt their praise immediately, his blue eyes switching to a pale purple in a flash. His hunger was satiating... slightly.

Shale bowed as his performers quickly got into position to entertain his most beloved guests. As always, there were things to complete elsewhere. A ringmaster was not without his skeletons in the closet, and in his case at times, actual skeletons in his closet. He slipped out back to a secluded area not known by any circus goers. There just as planned, was a man that threatened to end his circus. A spy, and an unwanted one at that. A large deformed man had pinned his hands to the ground, keeping his head firmly on a ragged tree stump. "I take it he has not backed down from this?" he asked. His reply was a shake of the head from the brute holding the prisoner. "Let's give him another chance, before my beloved elephant accidentally steps on his head, shall we?"
