It wasn't often that Rory was sent out on patrols alone. If anything, the guys in charge kept her on tight leash. With a grumble, she ducked underneath a branch and approached the next trail marker. When did the area get so overgrown?
Probably since the last landscaping crew disappeared back here, her brain supplied. It was the fourth one since she arrived, too.
That was the beauty of working on the Whisper Forest Search & Rescue Crew, she supposed, adjusting the badge on her jacket. There was never a boring day on the job. This place was a hotspot for disappearances, and the locals were pretty superstitious about it. So far, though, every case Rory and "her crew" were put on was solved - for better or for worse.
She vaulted over a fallen tree, mentally noting to bring a chainsaw with her next time. Spotting the next marker, she adjusted it, making sure it was in a better place to be seen. It was the simple things that could prevent these disappearances, if only everyone would take the time to do them. With an indignant scoff, Rory scanned the area, checking for people or creatures.
The Forest was usually empty this time of year, but it never hurt to keep an eye out.
