Return to Whisper Forest

The Misty Snow [P-self][L?]

Postby Kallile » 01/20/2018 5:54 PM

The Whisper Forest was in the midst of experiencing winter. The kuhna clan left stranded within the mistless haven somewhere at the center were at the mercy of the weather and of their pelts. Their more usual tree nests for the hot summers had been abandoned in favor of a more communal burrow where all could keep warm and accounted for.

Their leader stationed herself at the mouth of the burrow--using her naturally scruffy fur to help block the bone-chilling winds from reaching her followers and to keep an eye for any dangers lurking in the snowy mist. Her second-in command was often just behind her, somewhere a bit further down the tunnel, to act as back up should she need it.

Yet another night had passed, but this night had the misfortune of being a snowy night. When Asia awoke from her half-sleep in the morning, she was met at eye-level with a wall of snow held at bay by her own body heat and the mouth of the burrow. She heaved a sigh and stretched.

"Radek," she called rather softly down the darkened corridor, "go and wake the white-coats. They're on hunting duty today."
"I have been hidden, scorned, adored, worshiped, forsaken, coveted and banished more times than I care to count. But the one thing all those experiences cannot steal from me is the gentle soul I was born with, the kind heart I have molded, and the bright ideals for the future that have lit my way through the darkness of the past."

"At once, Asia." He paused thoughtfully as he stretched himself awake before adding with a yawn, "I'll send up the usual hunters to help dig out a path to the stream as well."

He couldn't see her reaction but he could hear her prum softly in appreciation and smiled despite himself. Asia was often one who was cold, but she seemed a bit more warm and forgiving in the winter months. He knew the fate of the clan weighed heavily on her mind--with food so scarce and the land infertile for growing and harvesting supplementary meals to help tide them over, there was always the fear of losing some of their members to hunger or cold.

With a final stretch he began making his way down into the belly of the burrow where everyone lay huddled.  In the center of them all was a fireplace kuhna, with the few ancient breeds the clan had close by with their tails in the center. The multiplied fire-effects from the joined efforts of the species kept the burrow feeling free from chill, even if it wasn't exactly warm. The rest of the clan was sprawled about--with the younger and more opposite-gender-attracted kuhna being herded off to one side by a few of the elders. Asia was strict about the creation of families, and the winter was no time to add new mouths to feed.

In the dull glow of tail-fire, Radek could make out the souls he had come down here seeking. They were poorly equipped for hunting, but their pelts made it mandatory for them to go out and try anyway. Without them, the usual hunting parties and their dark coats didn't stand a chance of finding food. Unfortunately, only one of those he sought was close enough to reach without stumbling over the rest of the group. Radek approached slowly, nudging the young female's nose with a delicate claw.

"Auriela, wake up. I need to to get Nix and Kida. Kaleo will meet you at the burrow entrance to brief you on hunting."

Radek said, seeing one of the younger day hunters stretch and begin making her way to the surface. She was no Zula, but her pelt colors were just soft enough to make her of use to the efforts. Radek paused another moment until the Preluhna he was nudging finally came to.

"Hmm?" she yawned sleepily, blinking up at Radek until his words fully sunk in. Then her eyes widened fearfully and she stood up quickly, almost trampling her company lead who rested next to her. Radek motioned for her to hush, then to move. She nodded with wide-eyed terror and began  tip-toeing her way to the barricaded young males to gather Nix. Kida would be harder, seeing as how she was in the middle with the other flame-tailed ancients.
