Polchinski's Paradox [L]

Renic

It wasn't as though he were unaccustomed to stumbling through the woods drunk off his ass. If he were being entirely honest, this wasn't even the first time this month that he had done so. Renic was just this side of drunk enough to be unsure whether or not it was the first time this week. Sometimes a guy just needed to be alone with his thoughts and get away from all of the supernatural bullshit in said guy's life.

But he wasn't thinking about any of that. He was far too preoccupied with trying to figure out how much alcohol he had left in the bottle, one eye shut as though it would make his hazy vision focus more accurately. Thus far it hadn't really worked, but he was all for trying. A baseball bat swung from his other hand, his grip only just tight enough to keep it from slipping and being lost to nature.

Deciding that here seemed about as good as any place to get completely tanked, Renic slumped back against the trunk of a great tree and slid his way down. The bark caught at his t-shirt and pulled it tight at the shoulders until it left his lower back bare to scratch against the coarse oak. He would probably be feeling that later, but right just then he was a tad too gone to care.

Renic took another healthy swig of alcohol, disappointed to note that it was nearly empty. He was probably going to get shit for lifting whiskey off his (very human) roommate (again), but given that he found the drinking justified he wasn't too worried about consequences. Besides, it wasn't as though he could explain to Aaron precisely why he needed it, and he was underage and couldn't exactly go about procuring it for himself. He would just have to take whatever punishment was dolled out - likely taking out the trash or doing the dishes for the rest of the month - and be done with it.

The mage huffed out a laugh at the idea that Aaron thought he was intimidating and told himself, also not for the first time, that he would have to make sure to ask for a different roommate next semester.

He'd emptied what was left of the bottle and settled it between the roots of the tree, thunking his head back against it and staring up the trunk into the endless leaves of the canopy. This was always a lot more depressing than he thought it would be on the walk out into the woods; way too quiet, not enough information to keep his mind in the moment. All the trees looked the same, and it was just a bit chilly, and he was surprised to find that he missed the constant chatter of his little pack of friends. One would think he would learn his lesson the first several times he'd done this, but something about whiskey made it difficult to remember any sort of self-actualization he accomplished on his little outings. Which, to be clear, was precisely the reason he drank. Ritalin could only do so much to slow him down, and if he was going to be stuck in an endless thought loop he'd at least like to not have to remember every bit of it.
