“Okay so that’s out of question for now, what we need to think about is where the second person was hiding,” Morgana scratched the back of her head thinking.

“Alright so the maid had said she was cleaning in the master bedroom when she came out and found him dead in the hallway,” Maurice looked down the hallway, “there is three other doors up here.” He went and carefully opened one, “this is the bathroom which he supposedly came out of. The master bedroom door and…” He went the last door and opened it, “it’s just a supply closest not big enough for a person to effectively hide in so where was this person at.”

“Maybe they came up from down stairs,” Morgana supplied.

He shook his head, “this is a book. A mystery book at that, we need to think more eccentric. Like trap doors-”

“And secret passages!” Morgana whispered loudly clearly more excited.

She started to put her hands on the walls, trying to feel for anything out of place. Maurice went over to the railing looking over the first and second floor feeling the bars to see if any were switches. After that searched the floor for any trap doors.

“Ah ha, Maurice get over here. This giant picture has hinges on one side of it,” Maurice walked over and started to help Morgana pull the picture open. It swung to the right leading to a big passageway behind it.

Maurice smiled, “perfect. This must be what the murder used. Also if it one of the guest doing this it would be easy to sneak away real fast and use this and then come back without anyone thinking much of it.”

“Let’s follow it and see where it leads, it might lead us to a better idea as to who the murder is.”

Maurice groaned, he knew it was the right idea, “but what if the murder is in the passage right now?”

Morgana grabbed a candle stick off hallway table and stepped into the passage, “then we will surprise him.”

Maurice frowned at the idea but swallowed his fears and followed after her. The light from the candle gave the passage and eerie glow. They walked down a short hallway before coming to a set of stairs which led to another set right after that. Once they reached the bottom the pushed open the door into a white hallway with tile flooring.

“Where are we?” Morgana asked as she held the candle higher to try to see well.

“I’m not sure but I think we are close to the kitchens. Let’s go look,” he made his way down the corridor until he came to the end which was the kitchens.

Morgana followed him and looked at all the cooking knifes that were laying out, “do think it was the cook that was the one to kill the Mr. Dollahagen and the maid.”

“I’m not sure, it could have been. It would explain how he knows about the secret passages-” Maurice stopped talking mid-sentence when he heard the steadying sound shoes hitting tile, coming closer to the kitchen. He spun and looked at Morgana with wide eyes not sure what to do.

She blew out the candle and grabbed Maurice by the shoulder and stuff him then herself into a large bottom kitchen cabinet.

“Maybe it just the cook?” He whispered but Morgana held a finger to her lips and then pointed out the peep hole. All they could see was a pair of fancy shoes that belonged to a man, he was quietly whistling. They heard a fridge open and then some pans and plates be moved around before the door shut and the mystery man left the kitchen.

Once Morgana thought the coast was clear she climbed out of the cabinet helping Maurice back up as well.

“Maybe it was a guest that got a little hungry?” Maurice offered trying to come up with a believable reason.

“Yes, maybe. Well let’s hope so. We should probably head back up to bed, we should get a little sleep and then device a plan as to what we should ask some of the guests.”

As soon as they were back up in their room Maurice locked the door and slumped onto the bed hoping he could some sleep even though he was paranoid of being killed. Morgana followed him and landed on the other side of the bed.

Maurice woke abruptly to a loud scream that echoed through the mansion. Morgana also woke up and they both rushed out of their rooms followed by the other guests. The sound came from the kitchens and they both gave each other a look knowing now that whatever the mystery man from last night did down there is wasn’t to get a mid-night snack.

Sergeant Ross stepped forward and stuck out his pot belly, “what in the world happened here?”

Mr. Norman the man they had heard yell earlier stood looking like he was about to faint, “I came down to see how breakfast was coming along when I found the chef lying on the ground.” He pointed a finger into the kitchen and everyone peered in. There was the chef lying face down on the floor in front of the stove.

Dr. Atlan walked over to him and checked his pulse, “he is indeed dead.” The man sniffed his breath, “looks like he was poisoned.”
