Unraveling [Cita and I] [E]

This was not good. She had been doing well for herself in the Whisper Forest where not even many armies would send their men into. It had been months since she had encountered the man Orion who had sheltered her for a few days while she healed...among other things. They had left on mutual terms--Orion had to travel with the band and Saya couldn't stay tied to one person or place too long. But in those months she had noticed a stirring...in all the wrong places. And now it was too much to ignore. The military creation who had for so long done her job as a spy and smuggler without a hitch now had a huge hitch in her plans.

The infantile lives stirring in her abdomen.

She should have known--all the wrenching and half-form shifting she had done to free herself...she should have guessed her sterility was not caused by her creation. It was completely controlled by those that had made her...and she'd broken it somehow in her shift. The how was no longer important--she had no intention of ending her children's lives before they began. She needed to find their father--Orion--before their birth or she and her children were in great danger.
"I have been hidden, scorned, adored, worshiped, forsaken, coveted and banished more times than I care to count. But the one thing all those experiences cannot steal from me is the gentle soul I was born with, the kind heart I have molded, and the bright ideals for the future that have lit my way through the darkness of the past."

The few days Orion had spent with Saya had been some of the most peaceful and grounding days he could remember. Of course they'd had their fun, but he had helped patch her up before she went on her way, made sure she had some money and good clothes before she was off. They weren't meant to stay with one another, and he hoped that whoever had done the terrible things to her never found where she had gone.

Life went on. It didn't stop him from thinking of her though. Even as the band moved on from their venues, she stuck with him. He couldn't help but wonder what became of her, if she was okay. Saya was smart though, and she knew how to find them. Event Horizon wasn't a band that was hard to find. They'd been around the block so to speak, and with this tour being the last announced for quite some time everyone was clamoring for tickets.

The last show of the summer was to be on the Dead Coast, and they'd been setting up a huge stage for it. Reed and Cadence were going to be opening for them, as well as some local bands Itzal had taken a liking to. Orion was nervous about the amount of people who were to be there - but he could manage that. It would all be worth the check in the end, the chance to rest for a while. He'd probably end up bunking with Itzal but that was usually a given, since he didn't technically have his own place yet.

Travelling while pregnant was no easy task. In human form it was impossible at best--the modern human body wasn't meant to endure such long walking hours on such little rations without risking the life carried within her. But the canine form she was forced to travel in came with it's own downfalls. There were cities she would have to navigate without encountering a dog catcher, conversations and signs she would have to try and overhear without seeming too out of place. Then there were always the well-meaning citizens who would see the pregnant wolf-dog and want to take her in.

Her form was trimming down the weeks she was walking, often stopping to scent the air for any sign of which direction she could find Orion in. It would have been impossible for a lesser being but a genetically modified one...Saya could smell him surrounded by the salt sea of the Dead Coast.

With the forest and her one easy source of food behind her , Saya started towards the coastal town. She was extra vulnerable now--slowed by her growing belly and out i the open when she knew military eyes would be watching for her. Hopefully she could lay low in the form--plenty of equally strange beasts roamed the Evelonian Lands.

It was lucky that there were so many odd travelers around the Dead Coast. It was the height of crabbing season now, many were coming to make money and score some easy meals. The concert was a huge draw as well, and it seemed everyone was talking about it. The last big concert for Event Horizon before their lead took a break? Everyone wanted to be at this show.

Orion was trying to stay out of the way for now. He was outside of the hotel at least, with some prodding from Itzal to go and see the sights. There was a large marketplace that sold fresh fish in the morning and that was where he was today, looking around and trying not to bump into anyone. At least as the drummer of the band he wasn't as 'noticeable' as Itzal and could walk around mostly unmolested.

Picking up a pomegranate he frowned a little as he set it back down. What was he even doing here? Being outside wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

To be honest, the draw of food had brought her to the market. She had been travelling and living off whatever scraps she could find or steal for too long now. The time for shifting was over and the wolf-dog looked like she had swallowed a giant balloon whole. Maybe people stopped, a few had picked up their cell phones to call for someone to come and pick her up. But the most welcome sights were the posters for Event Horizon that were on every street corner and in the front of every diner and deli for miles. She was so close...and there wasn't much time to spare.

Her light and infrequent meals, however, were starting to take their toll. Her body was too busy feeding the infant lives harbored inside and the creature harboring them looked thin and ready to collapse. The smells of fish and fruits were too much to pass by--she trotted quickly through the market and practically swallowed any fallen favor whole before it could be noticed. She had to eat something or she was never going to....

Her nose shot to the right, eyes focused into near slits. Could it really be him? She inhaled again. Yes, amidst all the smells of foods there he was--Orion. She had spent enough time to know his scent well and he was about as mopey smelling as when they had first met. She changed direction, picking up one last apricot that had fallen to it's end on the sidewalk before picking up the pace.

When she first saw him she slowed. Would he even recognize her like this? She couldn't very well open up and start talking around all these people. Her auburn fur was still soft if not a little dingy from weather and lack of food. She approached carefully, head and tail held low. She was so tired...so hungry. She hoped he wouldn't reject her now or more than just her own self was at stake.

Though he was unaware for a few minutes of what was going on Orion slowly turned, curious at all the flashes. What were people taking pictures of? Hopefully not him. He tried to squash a small panic attack only to be hit with a larger one, nearly dropping the peace he had in his hands.

"Saya?" He called as she approached, setting the peach onto the table he was in front of before crouching down to gently stroke his hands through her fur, careful not to touch her distended belly. ....He was unsure if it was what he thought it was - but it didn't matter. Immediately he felt better, as he softly stroked her ears.

There were still cameras - he searched around for a moment before standing, letting one hand rest on her back. "Come on, let's go home?" She had found him for a reason, and he needed to get her out of here before they drew even more attention. "I missed you." He murmured as he lead her back towards the small hotel. It wasn't too far away at least, and he gently urged her into his room, securing the door before he dropped to the floor with her again.

"Are you okay? What happened?" He was checking her eyes and nose, tentatively stroking a hand over her distended belly. It certainly wasn't parasites, her belly was still soft and.... Gods, she was pregnant, wasn't she?

The same gentle hand on her ears was still as strange as the first time, but it was a welcome strangeness. She pressed against him a little as he stroked her head, the best she could do in place of a human hug. The people around were already fascinated by seeing such a large canine freely roaming the streets in broad daylight, she didn't need to give this man a wolf hug and risk someone thinking she was attacking him.

She padded after him, looking up when he murmured softly about missing her. Did he? It was a strange sentiment...she supposed they had had a good bit of fun while they were together which is what landed her in this situation to begin with. She should have known her creators weren't that trustworthy.

Once safely inside she laid down on the floor to rest her sore legs, looking up at him as he began to check her over. The babies she carried, alerted by the new foods she had just eaten and the lack of motion, began to stir within her and as Orion ran his hand over her stomach he would certainly feel several little paws kicking at his hands.

"They're yours," she said bluntly, looking at him as if he might decent into a fit of rage from which she would have to defend herself and her offspring from. Though her face read to take caution, she continued speaking to him. "They told me I was made sterile...the people who made me. I've had...many romantic nights before as a spy and nothing. I should have known they weren't being honest with me. I must have broken whatever was keeping me sterile when I escaped."

With a deep and sharp inhale she relaxed onto the floor, her stomach now tense and hard for what seemed an eternity before it too relaxed. An early contraction, no doubt, for no more seemed to be following suit. She lifted her head back to look at him with pain in her eyes. "I didn't think I was going to find you in time, Orion. We've been looking for you since I was sure of the signs, traveled from the Whisper Forest to find you."

Should his hand still be resting there, Orion would feel the entire body of one of his children rise up under his palm--trying to get comfortable again after having his or her home squeezed.

Rage was the furthest thing from Orion's mind as she told him they were his. "Are you sure?" He blurted out, seeming more surprised and very confused. "I mean." He backpedaled for a moment, though his hands remained resting on her swollen stomach. "I... I was sick, when I was little. They did radiation therapy, they told me I'd never father children." It was why he wasn't more careful while they'd been together, he'd never had to worry.

As she explained more he nodded, frowning at her sudden tense and then relaxation. A contraction to be sure, but an early one. It could still be days before Saya went into real labor, though this was still a bit of a scare. He was concerned, brow knitting together as the tiny life pushed against his hand. It was... An odd feeling. Not unwelcome, but it couldn't be comfortable for Saya.

"I'm glad you found me Saya. What can I do to help? Are you hungry?" He still seemed nervous, but he didn't really want to take his hands from her, almost afraid she'd leave again. She needed help with this, and thank the Gods above he'd delivered babies before. He didn't truly trust anyone else with this. Itzal, maybe. He wouldn't blab to the wrong people that Saya was here.

Saya nodded her head slowly at his questioning. She couldn't blame him for asking if she was sure. She'd made it very clear that more sordid meetings were most of her life. It would be stupid of him not to question. "You're the only one since I escaped."

She could feel her children squirming, quickly running out of room to do so. She had just barely found Orion in time. It wasn't the best feeling for her but it was good to know they were all still alive despite her lack of proper food. She heaved a sigh and did her best to melt with the floor; it was obvious she was in no shape to go anywhere.

"I'm starving," she answered quietly, her eyes sliding closed softly. "...and tired. So...tired..." She didn't seem distressed, only ready to fall asleep at the drop of a hat. "Just...can you pet my ears? It feels kinda nice actually." Her eyes opened again, glancing to Orion to gauge his reaction to the request.

"You can keep your hand on my stomach if you want, they seem to like your touch."

"I didn't mean to question you. I was just surprised." Of course he meant no harm in asking, and he hoped Saya wasn't angry with him. She didn't seem to be though, and he was rather concerned as she just melted into the floor. She was exhausted, and with labor fast approaching... He hoped they didn't have to find someone else to help. It would be difficult to explain.

"Of course." Orion nodded, having made motion to get up but instead rested one hand on her belly, the other stroking her ears as he took a bit of a more comfortable position on the floor. "Do you want me to get you food? Or water?" He was glad to sit there and comfort her, but he wanted her to be fed, and she could use a bath, he was sure she was itchy from the dirt of the road.

Saya felt miserable. She was tired, swollen, and hungry. This man who might as well still be a stranger was her best chance and she was...oh right. She stared at him, feeling things she had never felt before as a science experiment spy. Fear for what he would think of her, worry that he would turn her back in, put their children at risk for becoming experiments themselves.

"Orion..." she began softly, ignoring for now the question of food and water. If he wasn't the one who was going to look after she and the newborns, she had to get moving. "I can't...change back out of this form. They warned me, when they tried gaining my trust in them as 'saviors' by telling me they made me sterile...that if I would ever be pregnant and shift in late term...that none of us would survive. I had to travel like this to cover more ground...and I'm stuck like this until they're born. I don't know...what that means for them."

They could be canines forever, they could change into human babies after a few days, Saya didn't know. It wasn't exactly documented what would happen to a genetically altered shifters' children. She eyed him warily, hoping he would both not be completely crushed by the idea...and would still be willing to help.

As she spoke again Orion just nodded, listening as he continued to softly stroke her ears, wanting her to be as comfortable as he could manage. He was concerned about all of this. He was no vet, and delivering puppies had more risks, different risks... And Saya was so weak... He frowned a little as he tried to think, though he didn't push her away.

"As long as they're healthy, and you're healthy, I don't care what it means for them. ...I can assume they're.... Puppies, right now, otherwise it'd be risky for you. I don't think I can do this myself, Saya. I need help, I don't want to lose you or them." He just hoped she didn't run - they didn't have many options here, and he needed to find someone fast.

"Let me make some phone calls. And I'll figure this out. They can help with you and the puppies, and then I'll bring you home." Well. Home was a little farther away, but the concert would be over with, and they could really go home.

There was an odd sensation of appreciation that ran through the weary mother-to-be as she listened to Orion. Though a vet was hardly where she wanted to end up, they asked fewer questions. No blood testing, no need for names and pedigrees. She'd be safer there than a human hospital where they were sure to question her origins when she had natural triplets...or more.

"Just tell them you found a stray. They don't need to question you about my scars." She encouraged him, knowing that the scars they were going to see from underneath her fur would raise red flags if Orion called her 'his dog' or anything of that nature. She certainly looked the part of a stray--skinny sans the pregnant belly and covered in dirt.

"But for now...I would love some food, and water. If it's not too much to ask."
"I have been hidden, scorned, adored, worshiped, forsaken, coveted and banished more times than I care to count. "Yeah. But that I plan on keeping you, I don't want them trying to call the animal shelter." Orion nodded a little. It could work - and hopefully the vet wouldn't ask too many questions. It wasn't so hard to believe that people had good hearts, right?

"No, it's not. What do you want?" Orion went off to find Saya some food and water then, returning about a half an hour later with what she had requested of him, with something for himself as well. It was likely he'd be up all night helping her, being too worried over her and his pups to sleep or do anything other than look over them.

As Saya ate he pulled out his phone and made a few phone calls, trying to find a vet that would be open and help him, and not just try to take her away.

She hadn't thought of that, though she supposed it was possible. She couldn't wrap her mind around that right now. While Orion was gone she slept sprawled on the floor where she had laid down upon arrival. It wasn't as comfortable as a bed of leaves but she was far too tired to try and get onto the bed herself. As soon as he returned she pulled herself into a position easier for eating and took the rich food in slowly to try and avoid upsetting her system. To have flavored food again was heavenly and she indulged in every bite.

One call that Orion made was answered by a friendly voice on the other end. As he told her the situation there was a pause before she spoke again.

"So you're wanting to bring in a pregnant stray...and have us help make sure she gives birth alright? Do you mean a c-section? Are you wanting her spayed once the puppies are born? If so a c-section would be the best way to go. We can give her some medications to help speed labor along and see if she'll deliver naturally first though. It will save you having to bottle feed a bunch of puppies." Realizing she was rambling, the voice paused on the other end of the phone again and when she returned was chipper as ever. "But yes! This hospital offers all those services and we can certainly take care of your pregnant pooch. We close everyday at 7, so bring her in as early as possible! Would you like to schedule a time or run her in?"
