Monster in the Water (Private | L)

Postby Sarah » 01/09/2017 12:18 AM

The full moon was the perfect lighting after a hard day's hiding. It seemed the only time she was ever truly free to roam was when the sun set. For whatever reason her hunters pissed off once it got dark.

Even after all the time she'd spent in the port city she was not used to the intense smell of salt. Still, she found herself on the shore of the sea, looking out to where the water met the horizon. Austriel was careful not to get into the water, or even let the soft waves lap at her bare feet. She traveled down the coast with little rush. The cool night air, although salty, was refreshing. Soon she would reach the end of the beach. Austriel contemplated struggling over the rocks, as shoreline gave way to rocky cliffs.

With a sigh of resignation Austriel brushed the sand off of her feet and put her tennis shoes back on. There was only so much of the world that she had seen, it wouldn't hurt to explore it some more. In no time she reached the rocks. They were relatively smooth, smoother than she had expected. This close to the shoreline she didn't have to worry about waves hitting the rocks and possibly dragging her into the water. She could see that later on she would need to be more careful with her footing, lest she fall in.

Approximately half way to where the cliffs rose perpendicular to the water, Austriel looked back the way she had come. It hadn't been easy going, but it had been enjoyable. Now she would need to focus more on her footing, as she was getting uncomfortably close to the water.

Re: Monster in the Water (Private | Hunt | L)

(( We can remove the "Hunt" tag. Those are required anymore, you just need to take the RP and report it in the "Lone Saloon" Marketplace shop. We need to get a minimum of five posts, and it looks like the only creatures available in the dead coast are palmie? That or there might be an undiscovered Lost pet here. So we can maybe report the hunt at the 20 post mark, or even later to see what we might find. ))

Lucius Esox

They were funny animals, placing themselves in risky situations just for the sake of it. Watching them perform these feats served both as entertainment and opportunity.

While Lucius could dive to some truly formidable depths, his eyes were not as helpful past a certain point, and his whiskers only did so much. Once the evening came it was easier to take on prey closer to the surface of the water, most fish knew as much and were try to hide in the depths. Humans, on the other hand, remained in the same place (relatively). How strange it must be to only ever go side to side.

The woman on the rocks was defying her own nature as she climbed up and over the rocks. The tide was out, waves barely lapping at the rock, barely grinding the salt into the surface to make it smooth. Slippery. Dangerous.

Pity.

Lucius, as the humans had named him, slithered round the rocks, dark skin and seaweed coloured scales hard to see in the dark, and where his tail lightened the colour could be explained away as light on the water. He and the water were one; so much closer than friends or enemies could be.

She wasn't slipping though, but the rocks seemed to shine more, the girl was more precarious. Lucius quietly positioned himself behind her, propping himself up on a rock and keeping the long length of his eel-like tail beneath the dark waters. As long as he didn't show fang or claw, and explained away the fine patches of scales as debris from the ocean, he might come off as human.

“Hello there, you're out awfully late.”

Or he might just surprise her enough that she would tip herself into the ocean (crack her skull, if he was really lucky) and he wouldn't have to bother with the pleasantries at all.

( Ah, thanks for reminding me <3 )

The moonlight, and all the millions of stars reflected on the sea wonderfully. Austriel had to focus on getting over the rocks, but once she was a little farther she would stop and truly appreciate the scenery. From the castle, to hiding, she hadn't much time to stargaze.

the sudden voice behind her made her stiffen. She'd learned long ago that jumping did little good beyond throwing oneself off balance. That was the last thing she needed now. "Holy... Hells," Austriel hissed. Cursing the celestials had proven to be a bad idea. Letting her location be known to her hunters? Not tonight.

"Hello," she said cautiously. The moon cast dark shadows, and she couldn't get a very good read on who, or what, exactly had come to her. They looked human, but she could only see their torso. "It is quite late," she agreed. "I am just looking to get some fresh air," she answered him. Why in the hell was he in the water at this hour? Moonlit swimming did not seem safe.

Well, tonight wouldn't lead to an easy meal. Lucius had to be careful to keep himself from sighing. Instead the merman settled on a closed lip smile, eyes dancing with mirth.

“Are the hells a holy place then?” Lucius purred, careful not to open his mouth too widely or stretch his lips too thin over his teeth, while still projecting his voice enough to be heard over the sea lapping at the rocks.
“Seems quite a precarious way to breathe air.” He said, looking right to see more rocks, then left back towards the empty beach.
“I mean there's an awful lot right here, and along the beach. Do you find it better when it tastes of risk?” He hid a grin behind a loosely fisted hand, which he propped his chin on, rock digging into lightly scaled skin of his elbow.

He wondered if she would climb down to him, or at least turn around to face him properly. All he could see was her backside.

Seeing who was talking to her would probably help. Luckily whoever it was kept talking and she was able to realize that the voice was coming from behind her. She turned slowly, crouching down slightly to keep her balance. Behind her was a.. man?

"Not particularly," she sighed. "I just didn't want to invite any opportunistic 'friends," she said. He looked like a man, but different. Why was he in the water?

Austriel was confused for a moment, and then laughed. "Trust me, if I liked the way air tasted better with risk involved, I would not have made the hells a holy place," she told him.

"What're you doing out here anyways? and in the water of all places?" she asked.

His dark skin was beginning to dry, flecks of shining darkness speckled his cheeks and just under his eyes. Long, soaking black hair obscured his forehead and the sides of his head before being tied back loosely at the nape of his neck. Lucius fought the urge to move his tail as he watched the woman and her careful movements.

Oh they were going to run this weird analogy into the ground if they weren't careful. Lucius simply shook his head, “Yet you are risking falling in the water, unless you're planning on going for a swim tonight.”
It sounded like a question, or maybe an invitation.

As for him, “Well I'm not here to sunbathe, so swimming seems like something one might do at a beach. You seem to be an awful lot of climbing, so I suppose you're not one for a late night dip. Shame, it is actually quite nice as long as you don't drink the water.”

He was definitely inviting her now.

"Can't say my plan was to swim," she said. Austriel hated the water. It was a strange irony considering she had stuck to the coast ever since she was released from the castle. Unfortunately all the closest safe spots were near the coastal city.

Austriel looked at the night sky once more. Swimming might be something done at a beach... What of the scenery? The way the universe reflected over the soft water. She returned her gaze to the man. "I'll keep that in mind," she said laughing slightly.

"I'm Austriel by the way. What's your name?" she asked.

The woman seemed a little distracted by the sea but that wasn't a bad thing. Less emphasis on him and the peculiarities of his look, the better. What was less ideal was her unwillingness to come to the water. They had time, if she was going out for a walk at night over rocks along the edge of the ocean she didn't have some sort of... thing to be to. Or that was his experience with humans, what they did deeper inland he could only guess.

“... Lucius...” He said careful, not knowing if the name was strange or not, “I like your name though, I don't believe I've ever heard it before, nor do I believe that I have seen you on this beach... I'm not here very often.”

Lucius tapped his fingers over his mouth rhythmically, unsure how to get her into the water. Humans were so fickle about these things. She wasn't in a suit, so she wouldn't want to wet her clothes. Maybe if he could just... convince her to get close enough to the water to pull her in?

Austriel blushed slightly at his compliment. She hoped it would be hidden by the darkness. Her name was the only gift her real mother ever gave her, and she took a lot of pride in it. It was unique and it did sound pretty. She smiled at him, relaxing a little. He was still a stranger, but he didn't seem so bad so far.

"Thanks," she said. "I quite like your name as well," Austriel added. No name was particularly more odd than another. She spent her time around too many strange creatures with even stranger names to bat an eye at something that might not be common in Evelon.

"I don't come here often either. At least not this close to the water," she explained. "I don't like the water, though I mean no offense to those who do enjoy it," she said. Austriel knew monsters came in all forms and could inhabit all places. The ones in the water were the scariest, because she was helpless in the water.

Scared of the water? Well getting her in the water willingly was definite the harder route, he wasn't adverse to challenge. Or, rather, he was not adverse to a challenge when he wasn't hungry. He'd eaten a bit, far from ravenous, but the Dead Coast did not come by the name due to its plentiful bounty of fish and life in general.

"So what DID bring you so close to the edge tonight?" Lucius said, doing his best to sound genuinely curious, "I'm certainly not complaining. It is rare for me to find anyone out here, much less one willing to indulge me."
He flicked his tail a little to push his body up a little and keep himself situated on the rocks as he was without accidentally falling over or other wise revealing himself. It was dark with the bright moon reflecting overhead, hopefully she wouldn't question too thoroughly the way the water moved and frothed; that she would not catch glimpse of the upper portion of tail and see scales and not some sort of soaked bathing clothes. The longer he dragged this out the more likely she'd start catching a whiff of something not-quite-right.

"Boredom," Austriel said with a laugh. It was not totally untrue. Being in hiding was so incredibly dull. Even Lustaria was not always able to alleviate the feeling. It was frustrating that she was forced to do next to nothing while the rest of her family kept hard at work like always. In whatever ways she could she rebelled, tonight it meant she talked to a stranger on the far end of a beach.

She saw something move in the water. A fish probably, but it still drew her eyes away if only for a moment. She didn't know how well fish actually held up in the coast, given the name. With how clean the beaches were the water couldn't be too terrible. Austriel had once been on an actually dead lake once, it was more than disgusting.

He had to fight the urge to glare at her. Really? He was getting one word answers now? Not a lot to work with, but she still seemed interested in talking to him. Vanity seemed her motivations; she'd rather hear him talk about how great she was than talk of herself, or talk at all. If he continued to flatter her, maybe she'd come down from her high perch.

"Well you've certainly come to the right place to alleviate that, an empty beach with craggy rocks..." Lucius looked around with a frown before turning his attention to the woman in front of him only to smile again, "The only thing worth looking at or considering is you, my dear, and you can hardly do that so far from the water."
The night sky was nice, but for a man bound to the water it held no promise to him, and the sparkling things in the blackness of space were as dull and uninteresting as the empty beach.
"There's not much in these waters, and the tide should not be joining us for some time so it is quite safe," he added, "or I haven't found anything interested in me besides you, and you don't seem very monstrous to me."
