"I thought I saw movement, but I think it was just the wind." Curl replied. She looking at the palm trees thoughtfully, then at the long grass growing in places.

"Who knows how many Palmies could be hiding in that stuff." she said, indicating the grass. Curl stood up, watching as the grass moved with the breeze. I wonder if we will ever get one....

Tarsus already had the bucket handle in his mouth. No, that's quite all right. I'll carry it. The Kuhna moved after Cakey and Curl, slightly bemused by their energy. He sighed through the plastic, shaking his head indulgently as he moved towards the palm trees. I thought that Palmies were pretty small, he agreed, But I'm not about to force one out. I guess I wanted to lure it out... He nudged the bucket of seawater, which he placed carefully on a flat rock.

He squinted around, trying to pick out the form of anything small and moving. Nothing, except the soft rustling of wind. A sigh of impatience fluttered through his lips. Why weren't the Palmies out today? While it wasn't a perfect day, neither was it a bad one, right?

"Hmmm...I guess the movement might be from the wind..."  Cakey thought out loud as she looked around near the palm trees.

When Curl indicated that there might be Palmies in the grass, Cakey said "You might be right! Maybe there are Palmies hiding there." Cakey then went over and looked around in the grass. She didn't see anything. She sighed and stated, "Nothing." This is going to be harder than I thought... thought Cakey.

Curl flicked her tails, and settled down on the sand to wait. She was known for her patience and impatience, a factor that sometimes annoyed Tulline. Curl sighed, wondering how she was doing in the desert. Then she remembered how unsympathetic Tulline was, and stopped worrying about her.

She stood up, and walked over to Tarus.  "See anything?" she asked with slight hope. She kept her gaze on the palm trees, looking for movement at their bases.

Tarsus shook his head at Curl's query, his bright blue eyes still scanning the landscape. It was depressingly empty, really; he'd thought Palmies were common. That was what it said on the book that he'd studied Palmies' habits in, after all. And now? Nothing. Nothing at all. A completely empty landscape.

I thought they were common, he said despairingly, absently. He hopped onto the stone, poking glumly at the bark of a palm tree with one claw. He shouldn't sharpen his claws on a palm tree; what if a Palmie was watching? Instead, the Kuhna curled into a ball, eyes glittering as they stared in every direction, waiting for the telltale sign that a Palmie was hiding, waiting for the right moment.

"I thought they were common too..." Curl sighed. She scanned the area again, but didn't see any signs of a Palmie. To pass the time, Curl gathered various sea-shells, then poked a small hole in each one with the end of one of her claws. Then she found a piece of fishing line, and began to string the seashells onto it.

"I wonder how long it will be until we get one.." she murmured, continuing at what she was doing.

"This is not going to be easy..." said Cakey with a sigh. She went over with Tarsus and Curl and layed on her back. "I wonder what my owner would say if I didn't come home with a Palmie..." she sighed once more. Then seeing as the group and her was down,  she'd try and look at the bright side. "Well I guess that maybe, just maybe we'll be lucky. I mean they are common. But I guess by the rate we're going they're not gonna be common right now." Then she looked at the two kuhnas that were with her. First at the Revelate and then at the Hydro. "But that doesn't matter to me because you guys are here." She closed her eyes. "I feel like you're my friends..."

Tarsus laughed. My owner doesn't know I'm looking for a Palmie, but it's a present for her. But at least she won't be too disappointed if I don't bring her one. I do want to, though. He paused, and then, absently, as if to himself, he murmured, It would make me feel useful, for a change... For a moment, the look on his face might have been described as 'sad.' Then he shook his head, his eyes brightening again.

I'm sure we'll get one in the end, he said cheerfully. Don't worry about it, they're common and we would've known if the population suddenly dropped, or something. Wouldn't they? Did his voice sound a little falsely cheerful? That was how he felt. He drew swirls in the sand with one paw, sighed, and glanced at Curl. She was making...a necklace? What's that you're making? he asked curiously, moving over to see better.

Curl looked up from what she was doing, to answer Tarus's question.

"I'm stringing shells on a piece of fishing line I found." She said cheerfully, "I'm not sure what to make it into yet." Curl picked up a conch shell, pocked a hole in it, and added it to the line. By now, there was an assortment of colourful shells on it. She had made sure ech shell wasn't broken, and didn't have anything in it.

She paused, looking up from what she was doing again. "Do you think we should change the water in the bucket? It might have gone stale..." she suggested.

Cakey opened her eyes. "Tarsus is right. If the amount of Palmies decreased, we would of known."

"I'll go replace the water." said Cakey as she got up and got the bucket that was left on a flat rock. As she went out to the water she prayed, Please. Help me find a Palmie. And some for my friends if you can...

Tarsus nodded at Curl. It's very nice, he said politely, although, truth be told, he wasn't very interested. Stringing shells on a string was a mere pastime, something to make time go faster. It wouldn't help them find a Palmie, after all. He scuffed at the sand with one paw, nodding at Curl's statement about the water. He hadn't thought water could go stale, but hey.

The young kuhna had been about to fetch some water when the other, Cakey, picked it up and did it for her, after saying that he was right; if the Palmie level decreased, they would know. If she believed it, it made it easier for him to. Relief swelled in his heart as he gazed around at the trees again. Thank you, he said to Cakey, curling one claw around a stalk of grass absently.

"You're welcome." said Cakey with a small smile to Tarsus as she put the bucket in the water and tilted it a little to get the liquid in. When she finished, she walked back, placed the bucket on the same flat rock, and layed down on her back again.

"If you don't mind me asking..." started Cakey as she got comortable in the sand. "I know you didn't tell your owner that you went to go look for a Palmie because it's a surprise for her, which is what I did too. She said something about going to Craiss Caverns to find something called an Akail and left. I decided to get her a present while she was away so here I am. But anyway," continued Cakey as she looked at Tarsus. "What drove you to get a Palmie for your owner? My owner likes having new family members, which is what she calls us since she loves us so much. She also would of liked to have a Palmie in the family. And also...I want to prove to my owner that I'm grown up. She always thought I was too little to go out of my own, since I am the youngest kuhna. I always thought she thought I was useless and would only get in the way." Tears started to trickle down Cakey's face. She noticed that and then tried to catch herself by wiping her eyes before Tarsus could see. "What am I doing crying? I told myself I'd stop..." She tried to laugh it off, but started crying again. Why can't I do anything right? thought Cakey as she bawled.

Curl, who was in a happy little world of her own threading shells onto a piece of fishing line, immediately broke out of her trance when she heard Cakey crying. Curl looked up with a start, a paw holding a shell paused in mid air.

"Whats wrong?" she asked, putting down the shell and line and standing up. She walked over to Cakey, and sat down opposite her, wondering what was wrong. I wonder what is wrong...

Curl hadn't been listening, so she hadn't heard what Cakey had said.

Tarsus nodded gratefully as Cakey returned with the water, and began to speak. What brought him here? Her explanation was greeted with complete understanding, though. Tarsus had also been the youngest Kuhna in his pen until Yamaha, a Hydrokuhna that lived there as well, gave birth and Ziff joined them. Now the shy, stuttering Sugardrop male was the youngest, but he, unlike Tarsus, didn't seem to mind it so much. As she spoke, Tarsus realized abruptly that some tears were crawling down her cheeks. Dumbfounded, he blinked. Why was she crying? And then she burst out in sobs again.

Before the Revelate Kuhna could move, Curl got there first. Tarsus was quick to move to her side, though, pressing comfortingly against her. Being a Kuhna had definitely proved him a bit more sociable and less silly about touching others than other pets might be. It's all right, he sent quietly, I don't think you're useless at all...don't be sad, I'm sure your owner loves me. My owner, you see, she's got a lot of pets, but I'm still sure she cares for me too. Don't be sad...don't cry.

"I just feel so helpless! I can never do anything right! I'm a klutz and I always get in the way!" sobbed Cakey to Curl.

When Tarsus went over to comfort Cakey, she started to calm down. Curl and Tarsus are very caring. she thought. She then said, "I'm sorry I'm crying so much guys. I really appreciate the fact that you're trying to make me feel better."

She looked at Tarsus. "My owner as a lot of pets too, but I feel like she never has any time for me. I just wanted to make her happy by getting something special." Cakey got up, wiped her face and said, "I just want to feel loved..." She sighed. "Well, I'm sorry I caused you so much trouble with me crying." she said looking at both kuhnas. "It must be troublesome with me around."
