Snowed In [p]

Postby amapup » 12/23/2009 10:49 AM

The pale flurries continued to  fall, making the city even whiter than it was. A small snowbank shivered as a green head poked out, the Slepyheart climbing out the snow. She sneezed, her breath like frost as she hobbled over to the sidewalk, shivering. Gilette looked around at the blinding whiteness, as she sneezed again. Maybe this meant a white Christmas?

Spotting a cafe, the little dragon wandered over to it, managing to open the door as she slipped inside. Gilette sighed in relief at the warm air coursing through the building, and she slowly stopped shivering. There were only a few others here, the place not being very crowded on such a snowy day as this. Spotting a couch, she hopped up on it, curling up in a corner. A second ago she'd been freezing, but now it was so warm...

She yawned, at the brink of falling asleep.

Knight-Errant stood impatiently at the counter, waiting. He'd been outside, juggling random objects for money, and decided that it was time to stop freezing his feet. Finally, someone called out his name, and he went over to pick up his coffee (decaf; caffeine was one thing he never needed). One glance at the door told him that going back out was not an option, so he looked around for somewhere to sit.

He tried to settle in at several tables, but after a few moments at each he grew restless. Sitting was not his thing. Finally, he thought of something he should have come up with earlier: Why not continue his little show here? Knight-Errant had been trained as a jester for three years, and had retained the useful skills of juggling, simple magic tricks, and the telling of really awful jokes. Useful, that is, for a street performer.

He pulled out a purple velvet drawstring bag with stars all over it, flashy enough to prove he wasn't in it for the money, and set it in a corner of the cafe. There was a couch nearby, and a small Sleepyheart was curled up on it. A potential customer? After getting permission from someone behind the counter, Knight-Errant rummaged in his bag for some whimsical wooden figures and almost casually began juggling six of them.

The green dragon was about to fall asleep when a small thump brough her to her senses. She opened her eyes to see a Biolune Serraptor taking some wooden figures out of an overly showy bag. Gilette watched his juggling, impressed. Most street performers knew how to juggle, but only a third of them could juggle six things at once. Plus, it was probably harder for a Serraptor, seeing the way their arms were positioned.

The Sleepyheart lifted her head for a better view, blinking sleepily. But then again, she was always sleepy anyways. They weren't called Sleepyhearts for no reason.

Knight-Errant noticed the Sleepyheart watching him and smiled. He nudged the bag with his foot. "Spare a few keystones for the poor?" He laughed. "Just kidding. I don't need the money. Not that I mind the occasional willing donation, but, I must stress, only willing ones. Always good to have a second source of income."

Of course, he didn't really have a first source of income, but it didn't really matter. Indigo didn't charge rent, especially for someone who'd been traveling with the rest of the original household since they'd lived in a disappearing castle in a swampy field. Everything had changed quite a bit since then.

He kept up the juggling with one hand and his tail while using the other hand to scoop up two or three more figures. This business was all about showing off. As he fed the new figures into his loop, he almost laughed; he hadn't realized what they were, which happened to be amusing caricatures of the other people (or pets, whatever you call them) at home.

Hmm...juggling wasn't always a crowd-pleaser. It got dull and repetitive after a while. Unless...he pulled out a stick and a book of matches, then, balancing awkwardly on one foot, held the stick in the other while he lit it on fire and tossed it into his loop. Now this would be fun.

Gilette smilied, laughing softly at his comment. She rather liked the Biolune's manner, and she got the sense that he was a good sort of person. She continued to watch his juggling, before noticing the shape of the figurines. She stiffled a small giggle at some of the cartoon shapes flashing past, though it was hard to see the details at the speed they were moving at. Apparently he must have had a sense of humor as well, for she didn't see any other reason for him to be carrying around statues of that type.

The Sleepyheart's eyes widened a bit when he suddenly added the match in. He could burn the whole place down if he wasn't careful; did the manager know?! Wherever the manager happened to be, that was. You're good at juggling! she though-spoke to him, a bit taken aback with his skill. 9 figures and a match! Gilette just hoped she hadn't spoken too soon.

Knight-Errant almost jumped at the thought that clearly wasn't his own. He guessed it had come from the Sleepyheart, and grinned at her based on this. "Thank you." He watched the whirling objects for a moment, then blew out the match as it went by. The next time it came around, he flicked it with his tail and sent is spiralling into his bag.

Yes, he was a show-off. But an entertaining show-off.

He considered whether or not he should do that one trick where he tossed the fruit in and then ate some of it, or whatever it was officially called, but decided against it. Everyone knew how to do that one, at least everyone within his sphere of experience. Was that even a real expression?

Hmm, something interesting to do. Perhaps a knife of some kind; people always liked that one. Hmm...ah. Of course.

He used one foot to flick a small apple into the loop, followed by a penknife. As they went by, he flipped open the knife and began juggling in such a way that it cut carefully planned lines into the apple, while still keeping the other figures in the air. It was complicated, to be sure, but he'd done it before.

Still, he'd have to stop sometime...

The Sleepyheart's eyes followed the match as it flipped through the air, before landing perfectly in the bag. Wow. Gilette was starting to wonder if the tricks were getting a bit too fantastic, though the things he was doing were way beyond any she'd ever seen.

She turned her head back to the Serraptor, just as he added an apple and a penknife into his loop. The penknife she could understand, but the apple? She concentrated closer, sure there must be some kind of trick in there. And... yes, there it was! The knife was apparently making thin slices in the apple; maybe there was a pattern? The dragon craned her neck off the couch, but as far as she could tell there didn't seem to be one. He would just have to be careful not to cut any of his other figurines as well.

Okay, this was getting boring. Time for a change. Knight-Errant thought for a moment, then flicked the side of the knife with his tail carefully until, after several more turns, there was a good-sized hollow in the remaining half of the apple. He flipped one of the figurines into it, then decided it was time to pack up his act. It was getting boring, and he was out of ideas for the time being. He closed the knife, let the various objects fall one by one into his bag, and collected the slices of apple.

Biting one of the slices in half, he found his coffee, then looked around vaguely for somewhere to sit. He wasn't planning on going back outside to the corner any time soon, and at the moment he wasn't sure he could get ahold of anyone who could give him a ride. Hmm. Would the Sleepyheart let him sit next to her? Perhaps he could try to concentrate long enough to read that one book Indigo had been bugging him about. He was pretty sure he'd brought it.

He scooped up his ostentatious bag and walked over to the couch. "Excuse me, do you mind if I sit here? I'll try not to bother you." Emphasis on try, he thought. He always seemed to annoy people in real conversation, even if his act entertained them.

Gilette watched, slightly dismayed, as he carved a hollow in the apple. So much for a design... A short giggle, like a cross between a peep and a snort, escaped her as he jammed one of the wooden figures into the hole exploding the apple into the slices he'd made earlier. She wasn't one for explosions, but the way the apple had just BURST apart, helped no less by the fact it was done with a caricature... As she watched him put up his things, Gilette thumped her tail on the couch armrest, her version of applause. A couple of the humans briefly clapped as well. She was sad to see the show over, but it had fantastic for such a short time period.

She was surprised when the serraptor walked over to the couch, but she scooted over for him, climbing onto the armrest. Sure. Now if only there was a way she could "congratulate" him... The Sleepyheart's eye caught a dark brown keystone lying next to the couch, blending in with the wooden floor. Ah! A megar offering, but an offering none the less. After all, how could you expect a dragon to carry around keystones?

She gently hopped down to the floor, turning and grabbing the brown stone gently in her mouth. She hopped back onto the ajacent couch seat, craning her neck and dropping it next to the juggler. Amazing show! she thought, giving him the closest thing to a smile she could. She hopped back up on her perch, curling up casually with her forked tail in front. I'm Gilette, by the way.
