I know exactly what that's like. I've grown up my whole life without a mother. Not to mention... But that's a different subject. I simply give her a nod to let her know I won't press the subject. As for my knowledge on fighter units, that's another subject as well. "Actually yes. I was born with this birthmark on my shoulder. The doctors thought it was just a skin pigmentation, but about a couple years ago, it started getting darker." I pulled my sleeve up to show her where the birthmark was. "My dad had it checked out by specialists, who suggest I visit this school. But the tuition was extremely expensive even to get an appointment with the dean." I have to stop myself from saying anymore. I don't want to reveal any sensitive subjects. "Over the past year it started getting bolder and formed this word. Enlightened." Obviously, it was the name of our fighter unit. It made me wonder if she had the mark as well. "Do you have one too?"

By this time, the bus had arrived back at the school. Rebi and Komo had made it back to their dorm, and were now standing in front of the door. When Komo pulled up his sleeve, Rebi's breath caught in her lungs.

Seeing the mark in front of her just solidified everything. Although Rebi had been informed that Komo had the name branded on him, she had chosen to believe that it was a lie. Even with everything that had been happening today, she was trying to stay in denial. But seeing the word, matching hers exactly, made it impossible to deny.

Silently pulling up her sleeve, she showed him the mark on her own arm. "I guess you really are my Sacrifice, huh?" Without another word, she unlocked their door and stepped inside. Ignoring anything Komo said or did, she entered her bedroom and slammed the door, locking it behind her.

The next few weeks were like hell. I've tried to be polite and courteous to Rebi, but she keeps acting like she hates me. It's not all bad though. There are times where she's neutral about the whole situations. Sometimes she even acts like we're friends. I'm really confused about what's going on between us. I just wish that she'd decide what she wants. Even her last words that first day were confirmation that we're a pair meant to be.

But today's the first real test of our unit. We'll be pitted against another new fighter unit. I'm standing next to Rebi in the stadium, two other students facing us. The coach is addressing us each. "Starfall unit, are you ready?" The other two nod their heads. "Enlightened, are you ready?" I nod my head, ready to begin the word spell battle.

The classes so far had been basically useless. Sure, Rebi had learned how to weave spells using nothing but her own words, and she had memorized a few more basic spells. But she didn't want to be a Fighter, she wanted to be a Sacrifice! And the whole Unit Bonding thing was a complete waste of time - Rebi didn't want to bond with Komo, and trust falls or deep conversations weren't going to change that.

But now it was their first battle together. When asked if she was ready, Rebi nodded. The words to begin the battle were said, and then Starfall immediately launched an attack. Unsure of how to react, Rebi hesitated, instinctively waiting for her Sacrifice's orders without intending to.

As Starfall's fighter called out an attack, chains shot out from their feet. I can see them headed straight for my knees. I've gotta react fast in the second before it hits me, which leaves little time for her to react. "Rebi, wall!" I yell at her, desperate to avoid letting it land on me. If it did, they'd probably be able to pull me down on my knees.

Instinctively, the girl opened her mouth to shout words that would create a strong barrier between her Sacrifice and their opponents. But at the last minute, she refused, instead calling out to Komo, "Don't tell me what to do, damnit! I don't need you controlling me!"

As the chains reached her Sacrifice, she instead called out an offensive spell. However, it's simplicity and her bad timing made it ineffective, and the other team was able to easily negate it with a barrier.

The pain in my knees is almost unbearable, but I've gotta pull through it. I've got to hold on for Rebi's sake. I notice that they're both wearing glasses, which means they're peripheral vision isn't as attuned as others. "Rebi, hit them from the sides. Get them confused." Hopefully she'll be able to take the initiative on this attack, especially since they've already got the upper hand so far.

Now Rebi was enraged, but not at the other unit. "I said, stop telling me what to do!" she practically screamed. Instead of following his directions, she decided to use a difficult attack that she had read about: Absolute Zero. It was supposedly out of her league, but she thought she was ready.

Immediately, the temperature began to drop. Rebi herself was safe from its effects, but her Sacrifice was not, nor were any of the spectators or teachers. The temperature became chilly, and then cold. Within a minute, it was hardly bearable. Rebi, completely oblivious to the damage she would cause if the temperature continued to drop, was simply happily surprised that she had managed to cast it so effectively.

Dangit Rebi, why won't you listen to me? Not only was she fighting me, but suddenly the air became cold. I could literally see my breath. Frost started to form on the shackles around my knees and my hair began to stand on end. My joints are freezing, my knees are weak and my fighter won't cooperate. Unable to hold myself up any longer, I fall to the ground, arms wrapped around each other, desperately clinging for warmth. That's when I blacked out.

When I woke up, I was in the nurses office. "What happened?" I asked him. Unusual that it's a male nurse. "You're lucky to be waking up. Your kneecaps were nearly shattered. And it took us half an hour to raise your core body temperature. It seems your fighter nearly froze the whole gymnasium." Worry fills me. How much trouble would she have gotten into for that? Was that even a legal move for so early on? But right now there's only one question I need answered. "Where is she?"

Staring down at her lap, Rebi did nothing to stop the waves of guilt washing over her. She deserved each and every one of them, she knew that. By the time Principal Ilia had stopped the fight, three students had suffered minor frostbite while everyone in the gym save for Rebi herself was chilled to the bone.

Komo had gotten the worst of it. Due to the large amount of metal around his body, the cold had effected him more than anyone else. Ilia had very nearly expelled Rebi, although in the end she decided to give her one final chance - not for her sake, but for Komo's sake. "The poor boy doesn't deserve to suffer for your mistakes more than he already has," the woman had said, before leaving the teenager in the waiting area of the infirmary.

Now, the nurse stuck his head out of the door. "He's awake," the man said. "And asking for you."

When the nurse stepped out and permitted her in, I couldn't help but cover myself up. I could tell I was only wearing my underwear and a hospital gown. It's embarrassing to be this close to naked in front of her. Luckily, I did have a blanket and quilt to pull up over me. I tucked in the quilt as best as I could to keep her from seeing anything. It also seemed to help the temperature. "Rebi? Are you okay? You didn't get in trouble, did you? You didn't freeze yourself?"

This was insane. Here was Komo, lying in an infirmary bed because of Rebi, and he was asking her if she was alright? Conflicting emotions rose up inside of her, and suddenly nothing made sense anymore. Before she could think, she began blurting out the first words she could think of.

"You're such an idiot!" she screamed. "This is all your fault. I told you not to tell me what to do. You said you didn't want to control me, but that's exactly what you tried to do! You deserve to be half frozen, and I deserve to be Sacrifice."

Unable to contain my frustration, I end up yelling at her. "Why are you so mad at me! It's not like I asked to be sacrifice! I mean, why are you so obsessed with control?!" And then it clicks. "Wait. You don't hate me, do you? You're scared of me. That's why you don't want me to control you, isn't it? That's why you've been giving me such a hard time?"

For a moment, Rebi's expression changed quickly, showing an array of emotions: surprise, anger, and yes - fear. Finally, her expression simply faded, leaving behind a blank mask. All of the emotions drained out of her, leaving nothing but a deep sense of emptiness.

"Fuck you," she said calmly, before turning and leaving the infirmary. As soon as she was outside the room, she took off at a sprint down the hallway. She didn't know where she was going, but it didn't really matter. She just needed to run, and get as far away as possible. If she could just keep going faster, maybe she would manage to outrun her feelings...and her fears.

I can see it in her eyes, the chaotic shifting of emotions. I can see them tearing at her. Knowing that, I can understand her last words. I can tell that this was needed. That getting to know why she was so brash towards me was not because of me. But when she runs out of the room, I can't help but feel sorry that I brought it up. "Rebi, wait," I call after her, but it's too late. She's taken off, out of the room. I hope it's not out of my life as well.

When I try to swing my legs out, I feel a sharp stabbing in both of them. When I look at them, they appear to be inoperable at the moment. They won't respond to my demands.

It's been days since I've last seen Rebi. The doctor says that I should be back to normal in a week or two. As of right now, I've been walking around with braces on my knees and crutches beneath my arms. I guess that's what it takes for me to heal at the moment. Yet despite the constant pain and limited mobility, all I care about is one thing. Everyday, I ask myself the same two questions. Where's Rebi? Is Rebi okay?
