Golden Afternoon [L]

In August's defence, she was really, very tired.

The summer days were the longest and most arduous. Even with the shade of the surrounding wood protecting the farm from the most vicious of the heat, it was still blisteringly hot, and even August's wide-brimmed sunhat was doing little to keep the rays from becoming a personal affront. The loft of the barn, in the corners beneath the beams, was cool and shaded. Taking up refuge there was the sensible thing to do.

Molly had deemed it a good idea too, and had clambered up with her, nesting next to her in the straw. Her long, fluffy tail swayed idly from side to side in her sleep. She was not an efficient farm cat, because the sound of mice skittering around was still clearly audible, but she was excellent company. Less abrasive, far more generous than her grumpy brother. Oh, he was a real card. Probably out scouting trees to chop with that axe of his.

Her hair sprawled around her as she rolled, one hand still resting on her cat's belly.

It had been just after midday when she had decided to lay down for a nap, and she had been full on the bread rolls that Artem had brought back from the bakers, first thing that morning. Delicious. There was nothing like fresh food from town. With her hunger satisfied, she simply wanted to snooze and appreciate a tasty meal. The clock was rapidly ticking towards three, and she had shown no signs of life yet.

Why would anyone set an alarm for waking up from a nap? It ruined the whole premise!

The hottest part of the day was almost over and she'd slept through it. The sun wouldn't relent until late evening, perhaps nine or ten, so she hadn't missed daylight, if that was any consolation. Personally, she wasn't too bothered. Summer in the valley was one sweltering day after another. She still had weeks to enjoy the climate.

August was so sleepy and content in her makeshift straw bed that she didn't hear the squealing of the barn door's hinges. Molly was slightly more alert, raising her fluffy head with a curious 'mrr?', but she wasn't making any move to investigate. The sunlight streamed in through the now open doorway, and the shadow of a man was thrown over the floor.

Artem didn't need to spend much time looking for her after he realised she wasn't organising the greenhouse. There was only one place she would realistically have sneaked off to, especially because Molly was nowhere to be found either. His face was blank as he climbed the ladder into the loft. Molly's eyes appeared guilty, if it was possible.

Of course, there she was. Sleeping beauty. He rolled his eyes.

Artem took a few steps forward and leaned over August's sleeping body, poking her in the cheek with one finger. Nothing. Not even a flicker of recognition. A slightly firmer jab, and a slight flutter of her eyelids but nothing more.

Damn. She was some kind of girl.

"That's it.." To his delight, and August's imminent despair, there was a bucket near the ladder that had been left there to collect raindrops from a leak in the roof. He took it up in his hand. It was empty of water, due to the dry season, and thus was a perfect instrument. "This will work."

With one swing of his arm, he clattered the metal against the wall. Molly sprinted her way to the ground with a yelp of fear, and August bolted upright, squinting and glancing around in confusion.

"Good morning, sleepyhead!" Artem called in a sing-song voice, dropping the bucket to the side to fold his arms across his chest. "Or should I say afternoon? Was that a good nap?"

August was baffled for a moment. She was a sight to behold, with her hair messy and full of straw, and her clothes slightly askew from her sleepy tossing and turning. The remnants of a trail of drool were evident from the corner of her mouth to her chin. Groggy, she wiped at the wet patch before offering her brother a weak smile.

"It was really good.." A dreamy voice, still half-asleep.

"Yeah! That sounds great! I would have loved to have taken a nap, but you know," Artem continued, gritting his teeth in an effort to keep a cool head. "I have a farm to run, and all that. Thought you might like to help."

August did feel guilty. Seeing her brother looking vexed, and knowing that he'd gotten so much work done in the time she'd spent asleep, was not something she enjoyed. Did she regret the nap, though? Not in the least.

"I started on the greenhouse," She murmured, glancing at the floor in her guilt. "It was hot, though, and my hat didn't do much to keep the sun off of me.. and, well.. I got tired, and my skin was burning.."

Artem's shoulders sagged at his twin's explanation, and he sighed, shaking his head. It wasn't her fault. He knew she hated the weather, and asking her to work in what was essentially a giant magnifying glass hadn't been a good idea in the first place. He held out a hand to help her up, tugging her to her feet once she accepted it.

"It's alright. Could you check the coop, though? Please?"
